Aretha Franklin Died Without A Will

Source: queen aretha franklin death / CS Aretha Franklin shockingly left no will behind … which is surprising given her circumstances. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the singer died “intestate” — meaning she had no will at the time of death. It’s especially surprising given that she has a special needs son named Clarence who needs financial and other forms of support for his entire life. Aretha was ill for several years, but apparently did not see the end coming … or possibly a will was low on the priority list. According to Michigan law, Aretha’s 4 kids will share equally in her estate. READ MORE

Madonna Gets DESTROYED for Bizarre, Self-Serving Aretha Franklin Tribute

The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards proved that both Jennifer Lopez and Madonna pretty much never age or change. The former was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony and also put on an incredible performance that showed off her dance moves and her ridiculous body. The latter, meanwhile, stood on stage and was tasked with paying tribute to Aretha Franklin, the truly legendary singer who passed away last week from cancer . But most viewers think she made this tribute all about herself. Following a video of Franklin’s “I Say a Little Prayer” on a big screen, members of the audience – including Lopez and Camila Cabello – were reduced to tears as they remembered the iconic artist. Madonna then spent her segment in front of the crowed rambling on about the impact Franklin had on her career. This maybe, possibly could have worked. Madonna could maybe, possibly have brought everything back around and used her tale as a way to depict the enormous impact Aretha had on the entire music industry. Instead, though, she barely even mentioned Franklin by name. At one point, for example, Madonna shared her experience at an audition where she sang Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” in a last-minute decision after she had failed to bring sheet music or prepare another song. Okay… She explained that she ended up belting out this track “by heart,” acapella. And then said that the two men for whom she was auditioning didn’t believe “some skinny-ass white girl” was going to “[sing] a song by one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived.” No one watching had any idea what this had to do with Franklin herself. It just sounded like Madonna giving herself a great deal of props. Social media was quick to erupt with criticism for the strange, self-serving way in which The Material Girl essentially ignored the entire point of this Franklin tribute. Madonna did end up saying at least a few nice words about Franklin. She concluded her rambling speech as follows: “I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Long live the queen.” But the damage had already been done. Some folks are even calling for an apology to be issued, as explained by these two individuals on Twitter: I hope the vmas plan to issue a public apology for allowing Madonna to disrespect Aretha Franklin’s legacy like that #VMAs. “I’m so lost. I thought Madonna was supposed to be paying homage to Aretha but I all heard was her paying homage to herself. Come on, you are probably thinking. Could this have been all THAT bad? Welp, we’ve posted snippets of Madonna’s speech below. Go ahead and find out for yourself! Madonna: Slammed for This Aretha Franklin Tribute

Aretha Franklin Dies; Legendary Singer was 76

Aretha Franklin, one of the most successful and influential solo artists in music history, died on Thursday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 76 years old. A number of reporters and outlets had warned the public ahead of time that Franklin’s time was sadly near , as multiple sources confirmed over the weekend that the legendary artist was gravely ill. She ended up passing away while under hospice care in her Detroit home. She was surrounded by friends and family members at the time. In an unusual move, a tribute concert produced by Live Nation and spearheaded by Sony Music Chief Creative Officer Clive Davis, who signed Franklin to Arista Records in 1980, was actually announced prior to her passing. The event will likely be titled “Clive Davis Presents: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin” and is scheduled to be at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 14. The legendary singer had not performed for an audience since November of 2017. “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family,” Franklin’s family said on Thursday. Sources had said that Franklin’s weight plummeted down to 85 pounds by the time she passed away. Ahead of scheduled concerts in March and April of this year, the singer was forced to cancel the performances under doctor’s orders. Dubbed The Queen of Soul decades ago, Franklin has been cited by contemporary superstars such as Beyonce and Mariah Carey as being a major influence and role model. ( UPDATE : The singer’s publicist confirmed this news to the Associated Press and said Franklin died of advanced pancreatic cancer.) Her rundown of achievements is almost too long to list in one place. But we’ll give it a shot… – Franklin was nominated for 44 Grammy Wwards. – She won 18 Grammy Awards over the course of her career. – This figure represents the third-most Grammys ever won by an individual. – From 1968 through 1975, she won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance every single year. – Along with her most well-known song, “Respect,” the singer shot to fame with hits including “Natural Woman,” “I Say A Little Prayer” and “Chain of Fools,” many of which remain relevant today. – Franklin was the first woman to be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. – She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2005. – In 2010, she was named in the greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone.  Yes, of ALL TIME. Says it all, doesn’t it? Before Franklin even passed away, as soon as news broke that she was seriously ill, tributes and notes of sorrow started pouring forward on social media. Missy Elliott summed it up well on Twitter when she wrote the following on Monday morning: My prayers are with Aretha Franklin & her family during this difficult time. We MUST CELEBRATE the Living Legends while they are here to see it. So many have given us decades of Timeless music. In 2017, after 56 years as a singer and songwriter, Franklin said she was retiring, saying at the time: “I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from, and where it is now. “I’ll be pretty much satisfied, but I’m not going to go anywhere and just sit down and do nothing. That wouldn’t be good either.” Expect the messages of sorrow and sympathy to continue for many hours, days and weeks. What a career and what a woman. May Aretha Franklin rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2018: In Memoriam UPDATE: Here is the full Franklin family statement… It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Franklin, 76 years old, passed away on Thursday morning, August 16 at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit, MI, surrounded by family and loved ones. Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s Oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, MI. In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds. We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.

This Alabama County Has Never Had An Integrated School Until Now

View original post here:

O ne county in Alabama was finally moving forward with stopping segregation in its schools. The first integrated school in Sumter County finally made its debut on Monday, ushering in a new era after a painful past. The University Charter School (UCS) opened its doors to serve students from kindergarten to eighth grade in the city of Livingston, AL.com reported. Both white and Black students — more than half of the 300-plus students were Black while a little less than a half were white — sat and learned in classrooms. UCS made history with having a better balance of a diverse student body. No other school in the county has even come close to UCS’ more equitable ratio of white and Black students, according to historical enrollment documents. The UCS ratio shed light on the county’s demographics, which is 76 percent Black and 24 percent white, according to the latest U.S. Census  data. The county was also the poorest one in the state. The *first* integrated school in Sumter County, Alabama opened its doors yesterday. (via @Trish_Crain ) https://t.co/7vNVB0CZ93 — adam harris (@AdamHSays) August 14, 2018 The process of integration in Sumter, like that of Alabama, has been slow despite the large population of African-Americans in the county. The 1969 federal court decision that ordered integration to come to Sumter — 15 years after the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision — spurred white students to create their own private schools called “segregation academies.” As those private “academies” spread, Sumter’s public school district became predominantly Black. Parents were stuck with a choice of sending their kids to an all-white private institution or a largely Black public school. However, that hasn’t stopped strong integration pushes, which have led to the creation of UCS. A circuit county judge gave the green light for the school’s opening last month, beginning to clear the way for the painful segregation struggle to end and a more intertwined community to emerge. With the school’s debut, parents, teachers and students alike were thrilled and recognized the significance of the event. “The school will work wonders for the community,” Markeitha Tolliver , parent of fourth-grader Marquez Tolliver , said. “I’m praying they keep it for a very long time.” SEE ALSO: Soul Music Legend Aretha Franklin Is Reportedly Near Death Florida Denny’s Turns Away Black Churchgoers And Forced To Apologize [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3821729″ overlay=”true”]

Source: Steve Granitz / Getty The conversation around women being less than their male counterparts has been making headlines. Recently, Mo’Nique spoke out against Netflix and claimed they only offered her $500,000 to do a comedy special, but Dave Chapelle , Chris Rock and Amy Schumer were offered more. Mo’Nique asked fans to boycott because she wasn’t going to be paid as much as the Black men as well as a White female. Follow @TheRSMS According to Madam Noire , women are still not valued the same and Black women still aren’t paid as much as White women. Recently, Octavia Spencer, a three-time Academy Award nominee and winner spoke out about how her friend and co-star Jessica Chastain fought for her. Chastain wanted Spencer to be apart in a moving she is producing and took action so that they both could be paid the same. Spencer told this story during a panel at Sundance for “Women Breaking Barriers.” As she kept telling more of the story she began to tear up. Spencer said, “These are happy tears! I love that woman because she’s walking the walk and she’s actually talking the talk. She said, Octavia, we’re going to get you paid on this film. I said, ‘I would love to do your film, but here’s the thing, I’m going to have to get paid.’ She said, ‘Of course! You and I are going to be tied together. We’re going to be favored nations and we’re going to make the same thing. And you’re going to make that amount.” The movie they are referring to is “Shadow and Act,” which is a holiday comedy. We look forward to see these ladies in it and hope more women can band together like this. RELATED:  Octavia Spencer & LeBron James Team Up For Madam C.J.
