For Discussion: New Study Shows That Self-Esteem Levels Vary Between Race And Age

Check out this article and let us know what you think. Although Hispanics tend to have lower self-esteem than blacks or whites in the teen years, by age 30 their self-esteem has increased to the point that they have higher self-esteem than whites, a new study suggests. And in both adolescence and young adulthood, blacks have higher self-esteem than whites. By age 30, whites trailed both Hispanics and blacks in terms of self-esteem, according to the report published online July 4 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland made this finding after analyzing U.S. survey data of more than 7,000 young adults from 1994 to 2008. The participants ranged in age from 14 to 30 years. Over the course of 14 years, the study authors examined how five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) affected the youth’s self-esteem. In addition, the researchers also looked at the participants’ sense of life mastery, risk-taking tendencies, gender, ethnicity, health and income. “We tested for factors that we thought would have an impact on how self-esteem develops,” the study’s lead author, Ruth Yasemin Erol, said in news release from the American Psychological Association. “Understanding the trajectory of self-esteem is important to pinpointing and timing interventions that could improve people’s self-esteem.” The researchers found that conscientiousness, emotional stability, a feeling of mastery and being extraverted are key to predicting the direction a person’s self-esteem will take as they grow up, and that income did not affect this course. These findings, they pointed out, could assist health professionals in targeting treatments. We’re honestly surprised that older whites tend to lag in self-esteem in their latter years in comparison to blacks and hispanics. Hit up the comments section and state your piece. Source

Malcolm X’s Alleged Killer Has Been Walking Around Free For Years… Will Biography Finally Help Bring Justice???

The recently published Malcolm X biography by Manning Marable may be key to having his real killer brought to justice. Although three men were convicted of fatally shooting Malcolm X at the Audubon Ballroom in Upper Manhattan in 1965, for some time it has been believed that the investigation into his death was bungled, leading for two innocent men to be imprisoned and a guilty party to go free. While previous efforts to have the case reopened have failed, the publicity surrounding the recently published biography by Manning Marable could help bring about a new investigation — especially because in recent years prosecutors in the South have shown that it’s possible to pursue and win cases that are decades old and many of those cases have helped shine a light on the failures of civil rights era police. Part of what makes it more urgent to reopen this case is the recent revelation that the man who was never arrested for the assassination, but many suspected was responsible is now living in Newark under a different name. X was shot to death on stage at the Audubon Ballroom on Feb. 21, 1965. Shortly after he began to speak a scuffle broke out in the audience, then a smoke bomb went off and gun men opened fire. The prime suspect at the time was Thomas Hagan (pictured above being taken from Audubon Ballroom), a 22-year-old New Jersey member of the Nation of Islam who was arrested at the Audubon. Police investigated the crime scene for only four hours before the ballroom was mopped up for a dance that had already been planned. Police seemed to believe it was a simple enough case, since Malcolm X had recently broken with the Nation of Islam, who branded him a traitor and an enemy. Just a week before his assassination his home had also been firebombed.

Leonardo DiCaprio To Star In JFK Assassination Flick

In ‘Legacy of Secrecy,’ actor will play FBI informant who claimed that Mafia boss ordered president’s murder. By Eric Ditzian Leonardo DiCaprio Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images Perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio is planning to clone himself. That might be a wise move, considering the slate of potential projects he’s been lining up recently. The three-time Oscar nominee has already signed on for the Clint Eastwood-directed “Hoover,” a biopic about the controversial FBI director. Then there’s the potential for “The Wolf of Wall Street” with director Ridley Scott, Baz Luhrmann’s take on “The Great Gatsby,” a starring role in an adaptation of the best-selling nonfiction book “The Devil in the White City” and a slew of other flicks in various stages of development. To that hefty roster, add one more project: DiCaprio is set to star in “Legacy of Secrecy,” an adaptation of a book about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. According to Variety, he’ll play FBI informant Jack Van Laningham, who allegedly learned that a Mafia boss had ordered the president’s murder. According to the book, which incorporates declassified FBI files detailing the FBI operation, Carlos Marcello, a known Mafia godfather, confessed to Van Laningham that he was responsible for JFK’s assassination. Many of Marcello’s associates were questioned in connection with the assassination, but Marcello himself was not named in the Warren Report, the official investigation into the tragedy. Warner Bros. is planning a potential 2013 release, though there’s no word about when production might begin. DiCaprio, who signed on to produce the film through his Appian Way slate after his father introduced him to the book, hasn’t been seen on the screen since this summer’s “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . New NBC Show Turns Conservative Hypocrite Into Liberal Hero — But Even MSM Ridicules Plot

NBC tonight (10 PM EDT/PDT, 9 PM CDT) debuts a new drama, Outlaw , centered on a conservative Supreme Court justice who, as a gambler and a philander, is a hypocrite played by Jimmy Smits. Realizing his political misdirection, he resigns from the court so he can become a crusading lawyer for liberal causes. But the program is so awful, even MSM TV critics are ridiculing it. (Joe Scarborough has at least one cameo in it.) “The show is so ludicrously dumb that your eyeballs will hurt from rolling so much,” Hank Stuever warned in Tuesday’s Washington Post. In USA Today, Robert Bianco pleaded : “Surely NBC’s joking. There’s awful, and then there’s atrociously, hilariously awful — a line NBC and Jimmy Smits soar across with Outlaw.” He proceeded to describe the show’s premise: A gambling, womanizing, conservative Supreme Court justice who chucks the court to become a crusader for the outcast and oppressed? That’s not a prime-time show, it’s a Saturday Night Live  sketch. We meet Smits’ Justice Cyrus Garza as he’s being thrown out of a casino for counting cards. Outside, he stops to debate a case he’s due to decide with a pretty ACLU protester (because you know those justices, yak, yak, yak) — whom he then beds. But her words move him, and he resigns to become a trial lawyer. Recognizing the commonality of TV shows that ridicule conservatives as hypocrites or people with dark and nefarious motives, Bianco asked: “Do we really need another show promoting another shadowy, conservative cabal, this one with tentacles in the Senate and the court and an anti-Garza agenda?” The take from James Poniewozik on Time.com : Outlaw — sneak-peeking tonight before moving to Fridays — starts in a direction of implausibility and keeps on going. The premise: Cyrus Garza (Jimmy Smits) is the most conservative justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, and the son of a famous and passionate liberal attorney. After his father dies in an accident, Garza re-examines his life and decides to embrace his father’s beliefs. He further decides that the legal system he works in is flawed, in such a way that he cannot do any good as a Supreme Court justice [!]. So he quits the bench and decides to become a freelance lawyer, traveling and taking on highly controversial cases. In the second episode we’ll get liberal guilt-tripping on Arizona, Bianco noted: “Friday, when Outlaw moves to its regular slot, the case involves racial profiling and Arizona’s immigration law.” NBC.com has posted an uninspiring four-minute trailer , which includes a scene with Joe Scarborough playing himself.

Former CNN Anchor O’Brien Attacks ‘Nutbag’ O’Donnell on Twitter

Former CNN anchor Miles O’Brien (no relation to current CNN special correspondent Soledad O’Brien ) slammed Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell as a ” Tea Party nutbag ” in a Tweet on Wednesday evening . O’Brien continued that he “forget [sic] her ignorant nonsense ,” referring to her defense of the creationist viewpoint during a 1996 appearance on his former network. O’Brien, who was let go by CNN in 2008 after they closed their science unit, linked to an article on the left-wing website Talking Points Memo after his attack on O’Donnell. The article, by Eric Kleefeld, highlighted an item by Dan Amira of New York magazine , who “dug up” the Republican’s March 1996 appearance with O’Brien and Dr. Michael McKinney of the University of Tennessee-Chattanoga. During the panel discussion, O’Donnell defended the creationism. Kleefeld labeled it as just another part of the social conservative’s ” religious right work ,” citing her apparent ” long career in anti-sex and anti-masturbation activism .” The former anchor’s Tweet is not surprising, gives his record of liberal bias when he was at CNN, particularly on the issue of climate change. On February 9, 2006 , O’Brien accused scientists skeptical of the theory of manmade global warming as being ” bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry .” Over two months later, he suggested raising gasoline taxes to “help pay for these alternative fuels.” During 2007, the then-CNN anchor insisted to former Republican Congressman J. C. Watts that the ” scientific debate is over ” on the climate change issue. O’Brien also dismissed critics of Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth” later that year. Less than a year before his dismissal from CNN, he compared manmade global warming skeptics to Flat Earthers . More recently, O’Brien, working a special correspondent for PBS’s NewsHour program, helped promote Dubuque, Iowa as a “city of a future” during a June 17, 2010 report, for its transformation from a former industrial center into a “green” capital, with the help of money from the Obama administration’s “stimulus” package. Outside of the global warming issue, the journalist conducted other left-leaning advocacy. He helped CNN promote the controversial “Death of a President” movie depicting the assassination of former President George W. Bush during an October 27, 2006 segment with director Gabriel Range. He labeled four American contractors who were kidnaped in Iraq ” mercenaries ” less than a month later . In April 2008, he tried to spin the 40% approval rating the Democratically-controlled Congress had at the time: “Democrats are marking 100 days of their congressional reign now, and they’re riding pretty high .”

Schultz: Republicans Want To Politically ‘Assassinate’ Pres. Obama’s Agenda

How far have we come from the era of “Dissent Is Patriotic” stickers on the bumpers of your local lefties during the Bush administration?  A host on the second-highest rated cable news network has equated political dissent with . . . assassination.   On his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz stated: “Now I’m putting my cards on the table tonight as I do every night. The Republican party is on a mission to politically assassinate the president’s agenda across the board.  They want to shoot down everything.” Note how Schultz reinforces the assassination theme by adding that Republicans want to “shoot down” everything.  Does political speech get much more vile than this?  Do Schultz’s MSNBC bosses approve this kind of reckless rhetoric?

’24’ Finale Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Get up to speed as Jack Bauer races against the clock for Monday’s two-hour series finale. By Josh Wigler Kiefer Sutherland in the series finale of “24” Photo: Ray Mickshaw/Fox Jack Bauer has been tortured by terrorists, imprisoned in a foreign country, addicted to heroin, infected with a deadly virus, electrocuted to death and subsequently brought back to life. But on Monday night (May 24), he’ll go through an entirely new kind of trauma: an ending. After eight action-packed days of foiling terrorist plots, killing the bad guys and losing plenty of sleep, Jack Bauer’s time on the small screen finally runs out with Monday’s series finale of “24.” It hasn’t always been an easy road for the former Counter Terrorism Unit operative — indeed, many would argue that the show is far from its glory days of seasons one and two — but with the end of “24” comes the end of a television era, particularly when coupled with Sunday night’s series finale of “Lost.” If you haven’t been keeping up with “24” but still want to tune into the final two-hour installment, rewinding the clock to the beginning of the season isn’t exactly the most time-efficient way to familiarize yourself with this year’s story. Instead, we’ll do our best to debrief you on all the important details of Bauer’s final day on television. As “24” began its eighth season, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) had just finished recovering from a lethal viral infection contracted at the end of season seven. But his days watching cartoons on the couch with his granddaughter were cut short upon his discovery of a plot to assassinate Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), the president of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan, who’s hard at work on a historic peace treaty with U.S. President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones). Along with the help of longtime friend and quirky CTU analyst Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and budding love interest Renee Walker (Annie Wersching), Bauer prevented an initial attempt on Hassan’s life and spent the next several hours investigating a related terrorist plot to detonate a nuclear device in New York City. Eventually, these terrorists revealed that they would willingly surrender the nuclear bomb in exchange for President Hassan as a prisoner. Both President Taylor and Bauer refused to comply, but Hassan, not willing to value his life over the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people, handed himself over to the terrorists. In one of the season’s most shocking moments, Bauer subsequently discovered Hassan’s brutally executed body. Thinking that he and his allies had failed, Bauer and Renee retired to Jack’s apartment to commiserate with each other, leading to a lengthy bedroom romp that ended with the ultimate form of sexual frustration: From several rooftops away, a Russian assassin shot and killed Renee, leaving Bauer covered in blood and more distraught than ever before. A devastated Jack soon learned the reason behind Renee’s murder: Because of her past connections as a mole within the Russian mob, Renee would have been able to identify certain Russian officials who were secretly responsible for all the day’s events, including Hassan’s assassination. Bauer took this news to President Taylor, but she refused to follow through with a proper investigation as it would jeopardize America’s relationship with Russia, one of the essential partners in completing the peace treaty with Hassan’s homeland. Although Taylor justified the cover-up as a means to pursuing the treaty, Bauer wasn’t satisfied with her motives and consequently embarked on his own quest for justice against the Russians responsible for killing Hassan and Renee. But rather than tracking down the guilty parties and placing them under arrest, the vengeful Bauer instead opted to kill everyone responsible for Hassan and Renee’s death, legal system be damned. In the most recent episode, Jack uncovered the identities of two of the people most culpable for these deaths: Russian President Yuri Suvarov (Nick Jameson) and disgraced former U.S. President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin), the same man who ordered the assassination of beloved President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) in the show’s fifth season. With only two hours remaining and a knife wound to the abdomen slowing him down, Bauer is running out of time to bring his bloody brand of justice to Suvarov’s and Logan’s doorsteps. Complicating matters further is the fact that the entirety of CTU, including Chloe and special agent Cole Ortiz (Freddie Prinze Jr.), has orders to take Bauer down using any means necessary. As “24” rushes toward the finish line, the great irony is this: After eight seasons of successfully unraveling conspiracies and thwarting terrible threats, Bauer himself has become the greatest threat of them all. Tell us what you’re expecting from the “24” series finale in the comments below!
