Will a Bunch of Earnest Actors Make You Want to See War Horse?

The actors in War Horse whinny for Oscar cred in the new promotional spot for the Spielberg epic. Though the elegance of the Broadway play’s amazing horse puppetry has been shamefully replaced by real horses, we’re supposed to believe the cinematic adaptation is just as poignant. Sigh. Let’s hear them out.

WATCH: Avatar Meets Attack of the Clones in the New John Carter Trailer

Edgar Rice Burroughs created the planet-hopping hero John Carter of Mars way back in 1912 in his serialized novels about a Southern gent transported to an alien world. Shades of Avatar and Attack of the Clones distract from what should be nonstop ooh-ing and aah-ing over giant CG creature effects and Taylor Kitsch in a loincloth. Then again, Taylor Kitsch in a loincloth … thank you for that, Mr. Stanton.

Talkback: Do Motion-Capture Actors Deserve Oscar Cred?

Andy Serkis brings up an interesting point when he insists that motion-capture acting — a la Rise of the Planet of the Apes — is acting , plain and simple. As the performer, you record movement and voice, much like any conventional thespian, except later someone colors over you with computer voodoo. But does that take anything away from the award-worthiness of a role? Should the Oscars key up their appreciation of this artform?

8 Milestones in the Evolution of James Cameron

This weekend, James Cameron delivers Sanctum , a rare Cameron produced movie that he didn’t direct. But how did Cameron, the director of the two most successful films of all time, get to this point after his disaster of a big-screen debut, Piranha II: The Spawning ? You can always trace a direct line through a handful of projects (not necessarily his best projects, mind you) to illustrate what led to a director’s current success. And with Cameron, it appears, up to this point, everything that he touches turns into gold (literally, because, you know, his movies make a lot of money).
