Arcade Fire Shine On Coachella Festival’s Day Two

Animal Collective surprise and the dance music hits hard on Saturday. By Mary J. DiMeglio Arcade Fire perform on Day 2 of Coachella 2011 Photo: Getty INDIO, California — Eschewing the big light shows of the weekend’s earlier main-stage acts, Arcade Fire stripped down for Saturday night’s Coachella crowd to let their sunny sing-alongs shine through. They bookended their set with cuts from their Grammy-winning The Suburbs , starting with “Month of May” and closing out with “Sprawl II.” Through it all, the crowd kept bopping, belting out “Rebellion (Lies),” and both “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” and “Neighborhood 3 (Power Out).” The recent surprise Album of the Year winners expressed their gratitude several times, admitting, “It’s pretty intimidating to be up here in front of all you people,” and later professing, “We don’t take this for granted, even for a second.” Check out photos from the Coachella Festival . This year, its 12th, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is presenting more than 100 bands over three days on the Empire Polo Club fields. Anyone who let Animal Collective’s reputation as a less-than-stellar live act convince them to stay away missed a wonderfully frantic set backed by stunning videography. The Baltimore experimentalists amply surpassed their duties and proved that, yes, they could bring it to the main stage. Their audience was thin, as positive word of mouth sent the masses to watch Empire of the Sun on the Outdoor stage. But the Empire experience is all about their theatrical stage show, which only the closest quarter or so of the crowd got to see. Erykah Badu’s late-afternoon set had her soul sisters and fan boys enthralled. After beginning with “20 Feet Tall,” she told them “Didn’t Cha Know” is her favorite song to sing and “If it starts feeling too good, don’t hesitate to scream.” Those missing this year’s lack of hard-rock acts had the chance to bang their heads to Rage Against the Machine spitter Zach De La Rocha and former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore’s surprisingly standard One Day as a Lion. Elsewhere, Swell Season soothed tired eardrums, and mad scientist Daedelus captivated. The Scissor Sisters gave a shout-out to earlier Mojave tent act Elbow, saying, “They don’t get the recognition they deserve, here in this country — just like the Scissor Sisters!” While Steve Angello brought house music to the masses in the Sahara tent, Andy C. and GQ reminded an intimate group of drum and bass fans in the Oasis dome of the late-’90s height of their rave days. Earlier, Laidback Luke had the Sahara pounding with an eclectic sunset performance that masterfully blended dance staples like “Better Off Alone” and new classic “When Love Takes Over” with Coldplay’s “Clocks” — somehow managing to make detours into dubstep and Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Brain” blend seamlessly. Coachella kicked off Friday with Kings of Leon, Interpol and the Chemical Brothers. On tap for Sunday (April 17): Wiz Khalifa, the Strokes, Duck Sauce and Kanye West. Did you go to Coachella? Kings Of Leon Win Over Coachella Festival Crowd

Interpol, Chemical Brothers and Lauryn Hill also help kick off first day. By Mary J. DiMeglio Kings of Leon perform on day one of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2011 Photo: Getty/ Jeff Kravitz INDIO, California — Despite finding message-board haters among some festival vets for snagging a headlining spot at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Kings of Leon won over the first-day crowd on Friday night, as the masses in attendance couldn’t help but sing and sway to the band’s radio-friendly rock. Saying they were “tired of playing the new stuff,” the Kings dug out “Molly’s Chambers” from their pre-big-time 2003 debut EP, Holy Roller Novocaine , which joined more-recent hits “On Call,” “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody.” The rockers’ Who-reminiscent “Black Thumbnail” finale of feedback and drum pummeling ended not with smashed guitars, but with good-ol’-boy singer Caleb Followill knotting up his handkerchief to toss into the adoring crowd. Check out photos from the Coachella Festival . The Kings’ bouncy, Southern-tinged, feel-good rock offered just a hint of the variety that the festival prides itself. More than 100 bands are slated to hit the stage during the three-day event, which was named by Pollstar as North America’s best outdoor music festival for seven of the past eight years. Now in its 12th year, Coachella set attendance records in 2010, packing 75,000 people per day onto the Empire Polo Club fields. This year’s extravaganza sold out six days after tickets went on sale in January. The resulting slew of ticket resellers and scams prompted organizers Goldenvoice to post a message on the Coachella homepage warning desperate seekers: “Do not purchase tickets from a third party” and “Anyone trying to sell a paper ticket is not legitimate.” In a change that began last year, single-day tickets were not available. Those lucky enough to place their orders legitimately received wristbands delivered to their door in elaborate packaging that included a calendar and photos. Interpol — whose set included fan favorites “Slow Hands,” “Say Hello to the Angels” and “Obstacle 1” — ended with a much-hyped collaboration with director David Lynch and the Creators Project that took trippy to a new level. That performance pushed an intensity of lights and sounds up, up, up until there was nothing to do but fade out and leave people walking away saying — like so many do after experiencing a Lynch creation — “Well, that was something, ” while not being sure whether they liked or understood it. After announcing, “They are always leaving us for last call,” Flogging Molly closed the Outdoor Stage with their riotous Irish punk. For those who still had the energy, the Chemical Brothers enticed the crowd to make one more swing by the main stage by turning up every light and bringing it home with “Galvanize,” “Do It Again” and “Don’t Think” in front of an eye-candy backdrop of psychedelic spinning heads, bouncing balls and splattering paint. Earlier on the main stage, former Fugees leading lady Lauryn Hill delivered a soulful set while accompanied by a brass section of tubas, saxophones and trumpets. After promising, “I’m gonna play some classics, some songs you know,” Hill pleased fans with “Everything Is Everything” and “The Sweetest Thing.” Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, up against the late-afternoon heat of the day, succeeded at getting heads nodding as they let the beats remain in the background and their tight, old-school rhymes shine through. Ozomatli surprised any metal lovers who caught their set by playing the first minute of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” from the metal icons’ landmark album of the same name, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier in the week. Metallica themselves will rock the polo fields next weekend, along with Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth, when they bring their only scheduled Stateside Big 4 concert to the site. In other unexpected nods to ’80s rock, Cee Lo Green managed to sneak some bars of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” into his disappointingly short set. Those who stuck around for his late start heard “Lady Killer,” Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and “F— You.” Elsewhere, Nosaj Thing found new fans with his flavor of jungle in the Gobi tent, Cut Copy had the Mojave grooving and Robyn had girlfriends boosted on shoulders to wave their arms to her girlie jams. And while Crystal Castles suffered some unfortunate issues with their vocals, their glitch still managed to entrance. The Sahara Tent boasted Erick Morillo, Sasha and Boys Noize, backed by the most impressive light shows in Coachella memory. In the midst of the dance-heavy day, Cold War Kids and the Black Keys offered welcome bluesy, soulful breaks. Still to come this weekend: Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Paul van Dyk, Wiz Khalifa, the Strokes, Duck Sauce and Kanye West. Did you go to Coachella? Give us your review in the comments below! My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore, Disturbed Reach Final Four Of March Madness

One of these four bands will win the 2011 MMM title; vote now in the Newsroom blog! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Mikey Way and Gerard Way Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Three weeks ago, 64 bands embarked on the voyage that is MTV’s Musical March Madness . Now, after millions of votes and nearly as many grueling matchups, only four remain. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore and Disturbed each punched their ticket for the Final Four late Thursday night, and one of them will hoist the MMM trophy next week. Check out our MMM Bracket right here! It wasn’t easy for any of them. Much like the Sweet 16, voting in the Elite 8 broke records and went down to the wire. We wouldn’t expect anything less, not when the bands still competing were this big, and the stakes this high. And they’re about to get even higher. Because voting in our Final Four matchups — #9 Disturbed vs. #3 Green Day and #5 Paramore vs. #3 My Chemical Romance — is now under way over on the Newsroom blog, and it’ll be up to you to determine the two bands that’ll go head-to-head for the MMM championship. Final Four voting has begun on the Newsroom blog! While you consider just whom you’ll be voting for — if you haven’t made your mind up already — let’s take a look back at each band’s journey to the Final Four. Disturbed The lowest-seeded band still standing, Disturbed entered MMM as a #9, but quickly served notice that they were a force to be reckoned with, knocking off #8 the Dave Matthews Band in the opening round, then shocking the world by slipping by the Midwest’s top seed, the Foo Fighters , to reach the Sweet 16. Then, they handled Patrick Stump and, perhaps inspired by frontman David Draiman’s now legendary “time to make a statement” speech, took down defending MMM champs Coheed and Cambria in an air-tight battle. With more than 105,000 votes cast, Disturbed outdistanced Coheed by less than 500 to win the Midwest region and earn a spot in the Final Four. Green Day Last year, Green Day were sent packing in the opening round of the tournament, an exit that left them with a bitter taste in their mouths and a sizeble chip on their shoulders. So, in their 2011 march to the Final Four, they took no prisoners, absolutely dominating Adam Lambert in the first round, then going toe-to-toe with a pair of their fellow rock heavyweights — U2 and Blink-182 — and barely breaking a sweat. Their toughest challenge came in the Elite 8 against, ironically enough, Panic! at the Disco, the very band that sent them packing last year. Green Day got revenge , withstanding a late surge from the Panic! guys to take the West region title and head to the Final Four. Paramore Nearly two years ago, we wrote that Paramore were poised “to become the kings and queen of the South.” Little did we know how right we’d be; after a string of impressive victories, Hayley Williams and the guys are, in fact, the rulers of the region, and they’ve certainly earned their crowns. No band faced a stiffer series of matchups throughout the tourney — Paramore drew No Doubt in the opening round and Kings of Leon in the second — and that was before they took on tournament vets Tokio Hotel in the Elite 8. Each time, they rose to the challenge, taking the South region title and, in the process, may very well have become the favorites to win it all. My Chemical Romance It was heartbreak city for MCR last year, as they rode a wave of fervent fan support all the way to the MMM championship game, only to be crushed by Coheed. They’re the only band to climb the mountain once again, and they’ve done it with a frightening level of proficiency. Because, to this point, My Chemical Romance have yet to be really tested, rolling #14 Panda Bear in round one, #11 Rage Against the Machine in round two and #2 Radiohead in the Sweet 16 . They ended 16th-seeded Sum 41’s dream run in the Elite 8 , wrapping up the East title and barely breaking a sweat. In the Final Four, they’ll face off against Paramore, which might very well be the de facto 2011 championship game. MTV’s Musical March Madness has reached the Final Four. All winners are determined by your votes, so, if your favorite act is still standing, it’s up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — and you’d better; the MMM trophy is within reach! My Chemical Romance Team With Fans On ‘Sing It For Japan’

Band will release charity version of latest single and fan-fueled video, with all proceeds going to Red Cross efforts. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Samir Hussein/ Getty Images My Chemical Romance have announced plans to release a charity version of their song “Sing,” with all proceeds going to the Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Japan. But they’re not doing it alone. Instead, they’re reaching out to members of their MCRmy to help the cause. The band is asking fans to submit videos, pictures, drawings and written messages to the people of Japan through social sites like Twitter — using the hashtag #SINGItForJapan — which they’ll then compile into a video to be paired with the song. “We’d like to send messages of hope to Japan from people all over the world. … Go wherever your creativity and heart takes you. It could be as simple as you holding up a sign with ‘#SINGItForJapan’ written on it, or anything else you can dream up,” guitarist Ray Toro wrote on the band’s official site. “From what we’ve seen on tour, we know you guys can dream bigger than we ever could. Don’t be afraid to get your families involved. If you are inspired to do something alone, that’s great too. But we encourage you to get a big group of people from your community together. We want Japan to know just how many people are behind them.” Toro added that the band got the idea after noticing that, in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that ravaged Japan, fans were sending messages of support to the nation using the hashtag. “After the news of the earthquake and tsunami spread, I did what most people did. I stopped and stared at the TV. I sat at the computer, constantly refreshing CNN in hopes of some good news,” he wrote. “And I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I noticed a hashtag, ‘SINGItForJapan,’ where you kids were writing messages of hope, saying prayers and sending your condolences and well wishes to survivors. It moved me in a profound way.” The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET. There’s no news on just when the band’s new version of “Sing” will be made available, but for more information — and to submit material for #SINGItForJapan — check out My Chemical Romance’s official site . My Chemical Romance Call Danger Days ‘A Missile Directed At Rock And Roll’

‘The best way to love rock and roll is to shoot it in the head,’ band says. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: MTV News In the four years between The Black Parade and Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, My Chemical Romance were no strangers to the grandiose statement. It seems that, in every interview they gave, the band found a new way to describe their (then upcoming) album, calling it everything from a “very pure” bit of punk rock to — most famously — “a love letter to rock and roll” . The end result, of course, was Danger Days, an album that is both of those things (and neither), often at the same time. And yet, it has basically been defined within those parameters. So, looking back on it now, do MCR regret anything they said in the lead-up to the album? Not really. “It makes me laugh when I [read it now],” frontman Gerard Way said, smiling. “Part of the problem was: We tried to define the record before we made the record. And it’s not all our fault,” guitarist Frank Iero added, “because everyone kept asking us, ‘Oh, what’s it going to be?’ And when we said, ‘Oh, we don’t know,’ they’re like, ‘Well, whadaya mean? What’s it going to be? Can you speculate?’ And it’s like, ‘Well, it’s going to be this,’ and when we found out what that is, it changed.” And that change was, of course, necessary. Both for the band’s survival and the scope of the new album. In retrospect, MCR stand by everything they said about Danger Days, because, really, deep down in its chrome-plated heart, it still is “a love letter” to American rock and roll . It’s just written from My Chemical Romance’s rather-unique perspective. “At first, we said, ‘It’s a love letter to rock and roll,’ and we found out that the best way to love rock and roll is to shoot it in the head,” Iero said. “So we made a record that was like a missile directed at rock and roll. “It just started to change and evolve, and then the band evolved at the same time. And I think that’s the way you have to make a record: in a very organic way.” What do you think of Danger Days ? Give us your review in the comments! My Chemical Romance Fans Get Batty, Battered At L.A. Gig

‘I got kicked [and] hit on the head, but it never felt so good,’ gushed one fan at MCR’s Danger Days release party. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way performs in Los Angeles on Monday Photo: MTV.com HOLLYWOOD — My Chemical Romance threw a party on Monday night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip to celebrate the release of their brand new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys , and the members of the MCRmy showed up in their Killjoy finest. Both inside and out, the House of Blues was transformed into a Day-Glo diaspora, part postapocalyptic fashion spectacle, part bizarre performance-art piece, as My Chem fans donned neon masks, brightly colored bandanas and a variety of blinking accessories (glasses, necklaces, bracelets, etc.), all in the name of Danger Days. They strolled through the “Zone 5 Carnival,” scarfed down cotton candy, avoided the menacing Draculoids that patrolled the grounds and — perhaps most importantly — witnessed one heck of a concert. “It was amazing. They’re my favorite band, so I was just completely stoked the whole time,” 17-year-old MCR fan Ryan Johnson said. “There was a lot of moshing going, and it was kind of crazy. The energy was amazing.” And that energy was matched only by some MCR followers’ dedication … they came from miles around (and a half a world away) to be here on this night, to be with their fellow fanatics and say they were there on the night their favorite band released its most ambitious album to date. “It was one of the most amazing concerts of my life … the utter energy that MCR puts out to the fans and the love all of us have for them, we all come together and it’s like one big family having an amazing get-together,” 15-year-old Matt Jennette said. “I came all the way here from Chicago because this is the album-release party and I love them with an unholy dedication. I had to see ’em. I paid like $200 for the tickets and it was worth it without a shadow of a doubt.” “I came from Italy, just because I love them more than my life. Their music makes me feel happy,” Stefania Fiorese, 24, added. “We were in the first row and it was amazing. I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Paris, and it was so good, but this one was better. The crowd was pushing so hard — everyone was jumping, everyone was trying to reach them. Tomorrow I will be purple all over my body but I don’t care.” That sentiment was echoed by pretty much every MCR fan who MTV News spoke to on Monday, many of whom limped out of the House of Blues a little battered, but completely, totally, blissed out of their minds. “They never cease to amaze me, they’re always great shows,” John Conaty, 20, beamed. “I got kicked, crowd surfed on, got hit on the head numerous times, but it never felt so good. At every My Chemical Romance show, getting crushed feels the best.” “I got kicked in the face! I didn’t even see it coming!” 16-year-old Savannah Hill laughed. “There was a crowd surfer and then they just came out of nowhere and whammed me in the face, but then I continued to watch the show. It was awesome.” Have you seen My Chemical Romance live? Tell us about your concert experiences in the comments. Related Videos Live In LA: My Chemical Romance Related Artists My Chemical Romance
