Rutger Hauer Dies; Veteran Actor Was 75

Rutger Hauer, a veteran actor probably best known for his leading role in the 1982 blockbuster Blade Runner, died on July 19 at his home in the Netherlands. He was 75 years old. Hauer’s agent, Steve Kenis, made the news today and added that Hauer’s funeral was held Wednesday. The Dutch actor starred in the aforementioned movie as Harrison Ford’s nemesis, truly putting himself on the Hollywood map with that legendary performance. Hauer’s character delivered a famous speech during a climatic face-off with Ford at the conclusion of Blade Runner, dialogue which he helped write himself, many outlets have since confirmed. “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe,” he tells Ford, adding in this iconic scene: “Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” He will also be fondly remembered for having major parts in Batman Begins and Sin City — and he also won a Golden Globe Award for his role in the 1987 TV film Escape from Sobibor. Hauer’s exact cause of death is unknown at the moment, but his agent says the actor passed away after having been diagnosed with some kind of illness. “This is not news, but he was a great guy and a great actor,” Kenis told Fox News this afternoon. On the small screen, Hauer portrayed Niall Brigant on HBO’s True Blood, the king of the tribe from which the Stackhouse family is descended and the faerie grandfather to Sookie, Jason Stackhouse and Hunter Savoy.  He also recurred on ABC’s medieval musical comedy Galavant as Kingsley in 2015. Aside from his acting career, Hauer was very active in social causes as an outspoken sponsor of the environmental organization Greenpeace and the founder the Starfish Association, a non-profit devoted to AIDS awareness. In the wake of his passing, there’s been an outpouring of sadness on social media. Tweeted Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, for example: “RIP the great Rutger Hauer: an intense, deep, genuine and magnetic actor that brought truth, power and beauty to his films.” And Robert Patrick added: “I am so sad to hear this, Rutger was such a sweet human being, and amazing actor! R.I.P. Rutger Hauer.” And Clancy Brown: “Giant Dutch hands. Giant Dutch heart. Rutger is one of the best actors I’ve ever known. Rest In Peace.” And Jack Osbourne: “RIP Rutger Hauer. Your work shaped my youth. Thank you. You will not be lost in time, like tears in the rain.” Hauer is survived by his second wife of 50 years, Ineke ten Cate, and a daughter, actress Aysha Hauer, from his marriage to Heidi Merz. We send our condolences to his friends, family members and loved ones. May Rutger Hauer rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

Greenpeace Takes Apple, Amazon, Microsoft to Task Over Coal-Powered Cloud Data Centers

Targeting major tech companies including Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft for use of coal derived power, Greenpeace has issued a new report entitled How Clean is Your Cloud? Given the energy-intensive nature of maintaining the cloud, access to significant amounts of electricity is a key factor in decisions about where to build these data centers. Since electricity plays a critical role in the cost structure of companies that use the cloud , there have been dramatic strides made in improving the energy efficiency. However, despite significant improvements in efficiency, the growth in cloud computing far outstrips these energy savings, and coal is still the cheapest power source. Not to mention the dirtiest. The study covers 14 Internet giants, but singles out Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft as the biggest offenders. Apple derives the most data center power (55%) from coal. Apple is building a 20-megawatt solar farm and 5-megawatt fuel cell facility at its new data center in Maiden, N.C., but Greenpeace downplays their significance. Greenpeace takes Apple to task for its decision to locate its data center in North Carolina, which reportedly maintains one of the dirtiest power grids in the U.S. While Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft take the brunt of Greenpeace’s criticism, Yahoo and Google receive high marks for their policies prioritizing renewable energy. Facebook also receives high marks for its recent commitment to renewable energy, including its latest data center in Sweden that is 100% renewable powered.

Greenpeace, PETA "Improperly" Put on FBI Terrorist Watch List

Photo via Treevolution That either group was on such a list in the first place is troublesome in itself. Regardless, The US Justice Department announced today that activists from both PETA and Greenpeace, as well as other groups, had been “improperly” monitored in the years following the September 11th attacks. Members and activists were placed on the FBI’s Terrorist Watch list for “factually weak” reasons between 2001 and 2006, a new report reveals. And the kicker is, the agency never found any evidence that either group was planning anything other … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Greenpeace Argentina Makes Procter & Gamble Take Charge For Tons Of Used Batteries

Photo: Courtesy of Greenpeace Argentina. Some may argue that Greenpeace has its twisted ways, but sometimes they just nail it. In Argentina, last year there was a huge controversy over a used batteries recycling program by the Buenos Aires government: essentially they were collecting them without a clear plan on what to do with this highly toxic waste, and when a province from the interior of the country said they were not taking them into their landfills, well, they were left with tons … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Early Christians Condoned Gay Marriage

Many of the world's religions — including Christianity — supported same-sex unions, a reality obscured by modern-day shrill, conservative commentary. Through much of history, especially prior to the Fourteenth Century, many Christians did not share the view that marriage was a reward for being heterosexual, nor that a same-sex union was objectionable. An icon from St. Catherine’s monastery on Mount Sinai illustrates this point. It shows two robed Christian saints getting married. Their pronubus (official witness, or “best man”) is none other than Jesus Christ. It is a standard Roman portrayal of a wedding. The difference: the two saints are both male, Fourth Century Christian martyrs, Saint Serge and Saint Bacchus, close friends in the Roman army who were purportedly singled out for their secret adherence to Christianity before being tortured and killed. Their unity, considered romantic by some historians and depicted through the image of marriage at St. Catherine’s monastery, was commemorated in many subsequent liturgies. The late Yale historian John Boswell found evidence for other Christian same-sex marriage ceremonies continuing even into the Eighteenth Century. added by: toyotabedzrock

The most evil men in America: The Koch Brothers

David (pictured) and Charles Koch: The billionaire brothers who are waging a war against Obama. The Kochs are longtime libertarians who believe in drastically lower personal and corporate taxes, minimal social services for the needy, and much less oversight of industry—especially environmental regulation. These views dovetail with the brothers’ corporate interests. In a study released this spring, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Political Economy Research Institute named Koch Industries one of the top ten air polluters in the United States. And Greenpeace issued a report identifying the company as a “kingpin of climate science denial.” The report showed that, from 2005 to 2008, the Kochs vastly outdid ExxonMobil in giving money to organizations fighting legislation related to climate change, underwriting a huge network of foundations, think tanks, and political front groups. Indeed, the brothers have funded opposition campaigns against so many Obama Administration policies—from health-care reform to the economic-stimulus program—that, in political circles, their ideological network is known as the Kochtopus. In a statement, Koch Industries said that the Greenpeace report “distorts the environmental record of our companies.” And David Koch, in a recent, admiring article about him in New York, protested that the “radical press” had turned his family into “whipping boys,” and had exaggerated its influence on American politics. But Charles Lewis, the founder of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan watchdog group, said, “The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation, and obfuscation. I’ve been in Washington since Watergate, and I’ve never seen anything like it. They are the Standard Oil of our times.” pic: http://www.newyorker.com/images/2010/08/30/p465/100830_r19927_p465.jpg added by: derk

Local DC ABC Reporter Suspended — For Conservative Bias?

Long-time DC TV news anchor Doug McKelway has been suspended by local ABC affiliate WJLA-TV (owned by Allbritton Communications, the same people who own the paper and website Politico) after a standup report last month from a liberal cap-and-trade rally trying to capitalize on the BP oil spill. “According to several of McKelway’s colleagues,” reported Paul Farhi in The Washington Post , “the newsman’s reporting may have lapsed into partisan territory when he commented live on the air about the oil industry’s influence in Washington, particularly its contributions to Democratic politicians and legislators ” — which must have included bigtime BP recipient Barack Obama. Don’t question the Democrats from a liberal protest!  Then came trouble: “The episode led to a meeting between McKelway and Bill Lord, WJLA’s station manager and news director, that featured sharp exchanges between them,” anonymous WJLA sources told the Post. They insisted the issue wasn’t the lines about Democrats, but about “insubordination.” But how is it not about conservative bias if that’s what put him on the hot seat with the boss? The Post added: McKelway has been cryptic when discussing his status with WJLA. In a posting on his Facebook page Thursday, McKelway wrote, “I’ve gotten so many emails and messages of concern about my employment situation. I wish I could say more!!! I don’t know if I’ll be back on the air, but I can tell you that life is very good. I’ve got a beautiful wife who’s telling me to stick to principle.” When asked late last month by morning radio host Elliot Segal if he had been fired, McKelway said, “All I can say is, I got a great lawyer.” He also said “I like contrarian things.” It’s also possible WJLA is still angry about McKelway’s really feisty interview with radical gay “outing” activist Mike Rogers on the local NewsChannel 8 (also an Allbritton station), which outraged gay leftists. (Notice McKelway calls out Barney Frank in the video .) At one point, McKelway told his guest: “I’d take you outside and give you a punch across the face….I think you’re hurting innocent people.” A day later, McKelway was unrepentant on the air, telling viewers, “An apology? Mike Rogers, you’re not getting one. You understand that? Because you’re a bully and you hurt innocent people, and you’re doing great harm to your movement, the gay rights movement, by doing what you’re doing.” McKelway has been with Channel 7 since 2001, and has long co-hosted WJLA’s “Good Morning Washington” newscast. He’s married to Susan Ferrechio, who’s also been a reporter for the Miami Herald, Congressional Quarterly, The Washington Times, and currently The Washington Examiner.  Of course, the Post had to lead with how “Veteran TV newsman Doug McKelway may have said too much — not to viewers but to his boss.” It’s just as plausible that McKelway simply “said too much” by saying a discouraging word about Democrats. The Post account also had to whitewash a rally by Greenpeace, Code Pink, and MoveOn.org , among other groups, as merely a “rally by religious and environmental groups to protest BP’s response to the oil spill and to advocate for legislation favoring renewable energy resources.” The lefties clearly planned to bother politicians who took BP contributions: “Following the rally, delegations of activists visited the offices of some of the lawmakers who have taken in the most in campaign contributions from BP during the 2008 and 2010 election cycles.”  Allbritton and WJLA ought to be questioned if it’s possible for a reporter in Barack Obama’s Washington to mention on air that President Obama’s a major recipient of BP cash without getting chewed out in the newsroom.
