REVIEW: Pablo Larraín’s Post Mortem Feels Around for the Feeble Pulse of Love, or of a Country

In the States, at least, it may seem odd to make a bitterly funny movie about glum working people caught in the crossfire of political upheaval and state-sanctioned murder. But Pablo Larraín pulls it off with Post Mortem , a modest, mordant little drama set in 1973 Santiago, Chile, just as a military coup is spelling the end for democratically elected President Salvador Allende and setting the stage for the ascent of dictator Augusto Pinochet. If you were a Chilean citizen in the middle of all that, you probably wouldn’t be smiling much, and sure enough, Larrain’s protagonist here, a dour coroner’s assistant named Mario, sets the tone for the movie from the beginning: He’s a gaunt, living ghost, with lank, longish blonde-gray hair – he’d almost be hip, if only he had the energy. As the movie opens, whatever problems Mario (Alfredo Castro) has seem to be of the personal sort. We see that he’s a regular at a local cabaret – the faded, crackled letters on its façade read “Bim Bam Bum” – and learn that he’s infatuated with one of the dancers, Nancy (Antonia Zegers), an enervated-looking girl with hollowed-out eyes that nonetheless know how to calculate. Nancy is Mario’s neighbor, although they meet for the first time when Mario steals backstage one day, just as Nancy is being fired by her boss for being too skinny. He introduces himself tentatively. “Hello, neighbor,” she responds, eyeing him as a cat surveys either a mouse or another cat – it’s hard to say which. Mario and Nancy don’t exactly court – it appears she has a hunky Communist activist boyfriend, which presents something of an obstacle. But Mario’s tenderness toward her is clear: He prepares plates of food for her, hoping to tempt her to eat. When her home is nearly destroyed in a mysterious raid – she’s not home at the time — he enters the wreckage and rescues her injured dog. Nancy begs for his help in finding her father and younger brother, who have been missing since the raid. But the destruction of Nancy’s home is just one element of the violence and paranoia that’s erupting all over the city: Soldiers begin dumping anonymous bodies at the morgue where Mario works, demanding that autopsy protocol be waived; the corpses pile up daily in alarming numbers. Ultimately, those soldiers make him part of their ranks, bringing him in to assist in one extremely significant autopsy — the man lying on the table isn’t just a human being, but a political turning point. Post Mortem starts out at a crawl, but it gathers emotional momentum as it pushes forward. Larraín – director of the 2008 Tony Manero , in which Castro also starred – takes his time letting the story unfold, and most of the movie’s action is implied, framed by sparse lines of dialogue. Still, Larrain manages to do a lot with a little: The picture has a pale, worn-out look, as if the blood is being drained from it even as we watch – like the characters who populate it, it looks ready for some kind of rejuvenation that may never come. That’s particularly true of Castro’s Mario: Castro is a lanky figure who looks preternaturally careworn, in the David Strathairn/Peter Coyote mold. His Mario carries so much worry that it appears to have worn grooves into his bones. What’s happening to his country? Why does this woman, whom he loves so much, torture him with her indifference? And might one be a metaphor for the other? Post Mortem asks all those questions, in a way that’s more emotional than clinical. Rather than rushing to determine the cause of death – of love, or of a country — it stubbornly keeps listening for a heartbeat, even though there may not be one. Lollapalooza 2012 Shows ‘Passion’ For EDM, Perry Farrell Says

‘You can dance amongst the trees,’ Farrell says of Lolla 2012, set for August 3-5 in Chicago. By James Montgomery Avicii Photo: Getty Images For years, Perry Farrell has championed electronic music at Lollapalooza, whether it was booking Nine Inch Nails at the very first Lolla, Orbital and Prodigy on the ill-fated ’97 trek, or any number of DJs he’s nabbed to appear on his Perry’s Stage when the fest returned to Chicago (to say nothing of his short-lived ENIT fest, which basically was one giant electro party … 15 years too early). But this year, in a move that reflects the burgeoning appeal of EDM here in the states, electronic acts finally make the leap to the main stage, as both Justice and Avicii have been booked alongside headliners the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Black Sabbath and the Black Keys. And, of course, Perry’s Stage will be back, too … only this year, it’s understandably bigger than ever before. “Well, dance music is a passion of Lollapalooza,” Farrell told MTV News. “We have a stage called Perry’s that became a tent, and I told them ‘Don’t put a tent on that thing, it’s going to burst at the seams’ … and sure enough it has. We don’t have a Perry’s tent anymore; Perry’s area, however, is in the wide open, under the stars and the moon and you can dance amongst the trees.” And in a lot of ways, that seems to reflect Farrell’s purest desire for Lollapalooza. Ever since it began, he’s envisioned it as a sort of free-flowing, communal Utopia, with minds being expanded and consciences lifted to the strains of electronic music. And it’s just one of the things he’s most proud of with Lolla ’12, which reflects the fest’s expansion to South America and its growing presence on the international stage. Of course, none of that would mean anything if he didn’t succeed in putting together a world-class festival, and this year, he feels he’s definitely accomplished that. “When I go to speak to [festival] producers around the world, I say to them ‘Our ambition is to bring international lifestyle and music to your country; are you in, or are you out?’ And no one has said no, so far,” he explained. “But I end up finding out that, as we go in there, thinking that we know everything, we find these beautiful discoveries. For example, in Brazil, we find O Rappa, which is a group that are as badass as NWA. We find in Chile, a group like Los Jaivas, who are as deep and soulful as Black Sabbath [both bands are on the Lolla ’12 bill]. So we all are teaching each other and learning from each other … and I feel like the world is becoming one big musical family.”

The Miss Reef 2012 Contest Puts the "Ass" in "Fantastic" [PIC, VIDEO]

Please don’t tell me that living in South America isn’t a nonstop thong contest where all the women are contestants and all the men are judges. I don’t think my heart (or my retirement plans) could bear it. See video from this year’s Miss Reef Chile semi-finals after the jump!

By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: David Tonnessen/ PacificCoastNews/ Newscom Nineties pop fans rejoice! Britney Spears has recruited the Backstreet Boys’ Howie Dorough to open for a string of South American dates on her Femme Fatale Tour. The gigs will coincide with the release of his first-ever solo album, Back to Me, out November 15. “I’m so excited that I’m going [to be] joining @britneyspears on several dates of the Femme Fatale tour!” Dorough tweeted on Monday.”Can’t wait to see all my lovelies in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela!! VIP info will be coming next week.” According to Dorough’s site (and as he also tweeted ), the Backstreet Boy’s initial stint on Britney’s tour will kick off on November 20 in La Plata, Argentina, with stops in Santiago, Lima and Bogota before it wraps up in Caracas, Venezuela, on November 28. He’s just the latest supporting act to join the worldwide Femme Fatale trek, stepping in the spot once occupied by artists like Joe Jonas, Nicki Minaj and DJ Pauly D . And when Dorough spoke to MTV News over the summer about his first solo recording, he said it felt good to finally get the chance to show fans a new side of himself as an artist. “I finally have been able to put [my album] together and I’m excited and very, very proud to be able to make this body of work,” he told us. “I feel [it’s] a total representation of where I’m at right now in my life and [it represents] things that are going on, positive-ness and energy. I think it’s really a chance for people to hear me and know my voice.” That’s not all, Howie D fans. Next year, Dorough will hit the road again with NKOTBSB — yes, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys — for a European tour that kicks off in April. “It’s awesome,” Dorough told MTV News of touring with NKOTBSB. “It all kind of spun from that show at Radio City [Music Hall]. I think we did something that was a shock factor for people. I don’t think a lot of people would have thought the two of us being onstage together would have been fathomable.” What do you think of Howie D opening for Britney Spears? Tell us in the comments! Justin Bieber Caught ‘Christmas Spirit’ In ‘Mistletoe’ Video

‘Mistletoe’ video premieres tomorrow at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, with in-depth live stream to follow on MTV.com. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News SANTIAGO, Chile — Justin Bieber faced plenty of challenges when he shot his “Mistletoe” video , the least of which was the fact that he did it in September, in Tennessee, with fake snow cascading down from the sky. The way he tells it, the biggest obstacle was not even being weirded out by Santa. “It was different because, like, it’s a Christmas video, so you gotta get your Christmas spirit on,” Bieber told MTV News backstage in Santiago, Chile, where he played to 55,000 screaming fans on Saturday. “We had Santa there. He was kind of interesting because he had this finger that would light up, but I never knew that, so he would come up to me randomly and pointed at me and his finger lit up and it was really strange. I was like, ‘Santa doesn’t do that, my friend.’ ” Of course, Bieber was quick to add that despite the awkward interaction, he remains decidedly pro-Santa, since “he gets kids in the holiday spirit.” Bieber’s “Mistletoe” video will make its world premiere Tuesday at 7:54 p.m. on MTV — with a special live stream to follow on MTV.com, where we’ll roll out more of our interview with him! — and on Monday (October 17), he released the song to iTunes. He’s rather proud of how both turned out, because he got to collaborate with two of his favorites: director Roman White and the production team known as the Messengers. “[Roman] can tell a story really well, so we wanted to use him,” Bieber explained. “He shot the ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ video, and I thought he did a great job; he shot the ‘You Belong [With] Me’ video with Taylor Swift, and he had a lot of great experience and a lot of great work. “[And] Nasri [one member of the Messengers team], he’s really intelligent, he can tell a story as well, Christmas, anything,” he continued. “So we were thinking of doing a Christmas album last year, we never really got to it. And this year I was like, ‘This year I really want to do it,’ so we collaborated on some ideas and sure enough, we got some great Christmas music. … I think I have a few classics on the album, I really, really do. I think that there’s some songs on there that are so catchy and everyone’s going to want to sing them every Christmas.” Catch the premiere of Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe” video Tuesday, October 18, at 7:54 p.m. on MTV, with a full interview to follow on MTV.com. Joachim Garraud Set To Bring Invasion 2011 To Coachella

David Guetta’s ex-producer also talks to MTV News about teaming up with Perry Farrell for Lollapalooza. By Adam Stewart Joachim Garraud Photo: Getty Images If you’re familiar with David Guetta , then you’re probably already familiar with Frenchman Joachim Garraud — even if you didn’t know it. In fact, Garraud’s largely responsible for what is widely considered a house music primer for today’s aficionados: Guetta’s 2002 mega-smash album, Just a Little More Love. Guetta fans also may be unaware that Garraud co-produced and wrote many of the album’s marquee tracks, including the title cut and “Love Don’t Let Me Go.” But Garraud’s hits don’t stop there. Joachim is also responsible for the ’04 club smash “The World Is Mine” and, perhaps most notably, one of the first and biggest club-friendly tracks to hit mainstream U.S. radio, 2007’s “Love Is Gone.” Now, after spending nearly a decade as a key player on Guetta’s production team, Garraud has stepped out on his own, putting out his second studio album, Invasion 2011, and heading out on a world tour. “We made tracks on production for three of David Guetta’s albums, and that was a pretty long and very cool story,” Garraud told MTV News recently in Miami. “[But] we stopped working together a few months ago, as [Guetta’s] choice was to focus more on the U.S. market by working with a lot of vocal artists. I was not very excited about this choice as a DJ. I was thinking that it’s maybe moving a little too far away from [that] area. But his choice was good. I mean, look at how successful the David Guetta project is!” That’s not to say Garraud has left behind his original style and influence. When listening to Invasion 2011, one can distinctly hear what his contributions to the various Guetta projects have been. His edgy, stab synths, the bone-crushing low ends, his superb timing and use of a wide range of effects and filters, all with the surgical precision we would expect from a producer of his ilk, bring all of the elements together for a thumping, underground, infectious set of grooves meant to take the listener back into the club. “I’m very excited about this new album, Invasion 2011, because it’s very focused on the DJ thing; it’s really for the DJ,” he said. “It’s not really [meant] to be played on the radio, because all the tracks are meant to be massive on the dance floor.” Steering clear of the mainstream-radio crossover vibe, Garraud hand-selected vocalists and collaborators who would fit his signature sound. “I worked with Roland Clark on a track called ‘Stop’ and another, ‘Bang Bang,’ [and] a girl named Ze from Kuala Lumpur [on ‘I’m Invaded’].” (Clark is known for his vocals with acts like Fatboy Slim and Prodigy.) Garraud also paired up with Black Eyed Peas super producer and touring DJ, Poet Name Life, on “Everybody Is in the Place,” which was most recently remixed by AutoErotique. The quality of Garraud’s collaborators and remixers garnishes the album with an array of future sounds. However, his reach and ability extend beyond the studio and the DJ booth. Partnering with Jane’s Addiction frontman and Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell, the duo are bringing electro to the big stage. “When Perry saw [my set] at Lollapalooza Chicago last summer, he was shocked. So [he] came to me and was like, ‘OK, I want exactly the same. You have to produce tracks for me and produce video and produce the show,’ ” he recalled. Garraud was humbled by the ask, and the wheels were soon set in motion. “We’ve produced 12 tracks together, and all the tracks are very cool, because the lyrics are so cool. He sings all of the tracks with his heart, so they’re very beautiful tracks, and on the dance floor, it’s very, very powerful.” Garraud and Farrell recently took the stage at Chile’s inaugural version of Lollapalooza, where the DJ/producer helmed Perry’s stage show, putting together the music, tracks, video and what he refers to as the overall “stage attitude.” Garraud said fans will get to see their set on the Chicago leg of his tour and, possibly, on a future iteration of the Lollapalooza festival in Europe. In the meantime, he can be seen next on Saturday at the increasingly electro-friendly Coachella music festival , alongside a flurry of other big name DJs, including Axwell, Steve Angello, Laidback Luke, Skrillex and many others.
