Christopher Nolan Finds Meaning In ‘Superman’ Adaptation

‘Whether you’re doing a ‘Batman’ or ‘Superman’ film, it’s all about story first,’ ‘Inception’ director says. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Christopher Nolan Photo: MTV News Of the many accomplishments that director Christopher Nolan achieved with “Batman Begins” in 2005, one of the greatest involved his ability to craft a compelling comic book adaptation while maintaining a surprising level of realism. Nolan’s down-to-earth, non-superhero approach to the Batman mythos owed much thanks to the character’s lack of superpowers — but when he puts his stamp on Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s forthcoming “Superman” reboot, he’ll likely have to try a different approach with the invulnerable Man of Steel. As the producer of the upcoming “Superman” film, Nolan is already hard at work on the story alongside his “Dark Knight” collaborators Jonah Nolan and David S. Goyer, but the project remains so early in development that casting hasn’t even been considered yet. “I haven’t even thought about it, to be honest,” Nolan told MTV News during a recent press junket for “Inception,” his forthcoming thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio. “All of these things, whether you’re doing a ‘Batman’ or ‘Superman’ film, it’s all about story first. It’s all about figuring out exactly the tone and the meaning of the story and how you’re going to approach it. Casting comes later. All of those considerations come later.” Even if casting isn’t an immediate concern, Nolan already has plenty of history to look toward as he and his collaborators find the story for “Superman.” For Nolan himself, the filmmaker considers director Richard Donner’s first adaptation in 1978 as something to aspire to. “I was hugely struck by the Donner films in the ’70s when I was a kid,” he said. “In 1978, I saw [“Superman”] and it had such epic scope to it. It took on this incredible, iconic figure and gave that iconic figure an appropriate framing. It made quite an impression on me. It’s definitely one of my childhood touchstones of what epic cinema can be.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Rihanna Is Working On ‘Positive, Explosive’ Tracks With Sean Garrett

‘Her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,’ songwriter says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna Photo: Fotonoticias/ WireImage Rihanna channeled her personal life into her last album, Rated R, a dark collection of songs that touched on her experience with former flame Chris Brown, who assaulted her just before the 2009 Grammys. For her follow-up, she and her collaborators are promising something more energetic . Rihanna recently told Elle that she’s much happier these days, and gushed about how her new beau, baseball player Matt Kemp, keeps her “sane.” And according to songwriter Sean Garrett , who has been in the studio with Rihanna recently, her new music reflects this state of mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett told MTV News. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about. “Remember when Rihanna was just the little girl from the island and she was just having fun with ‘Pon de Replay’ and enjoying life?” Garrett continued. “It always seemed like, ‘Dag, she has that thing. ‘ And it wasn’t so serious until the incident happened. And everything became so serious. That’s just life. But I’m just happy to see her back. And I can definitely say the records that we’ve been working on are very positive and very explosive. Heavy in the club.” In addition to Garrett, producer David Guetta said he wants to work with Rihanna and help her revisit her “Umbrella” days. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What musical direction would you like to see Rihanna go on her next album? Dr. Dre Says Leaked ‘Under Pressure’ Was ‘An Incomplete Song’

Dre issues statement about the collaboration with Jay-Z that hit the Internet this week. By Shaheem Reid Dr. Dre Photo: Interscope Records Not this way, says Dr. Dre . He doesn’t want people to hear any of his music before it is done. On Wednesday, an incomplete version of the much-hyped Dre and Jay-Z duet “Under Pressure” leaked to the Internet, and the Doc responded on Thursday (June 17) on the Interscope website. Simply titled “Message from Dre,” the statement reads: “I want to set the record straight for everybody who’s been waiting to hear my music. The song that’s out on the Internet is an incomplete song that I’m still working on. When it’s ready, you’ll be hearing it from me.” “Under Pressure” is a song from Dre’s much-hyped Detox album . Neither the song nor the LP has a release date. In the meantime, Interscope and Dre are focused on releasing the potentially blockbuster project from Eminem, Recovery, which lands officially on Monday (June 22). The bootleg of “Under Pressure” has no chorus, at least not the version that was leaked. Keep in mind, Dre has been known to do a few different versions of his songs before he feels they are ready for public consumption. The leaked version featured the Compton icon batting leadoff. “The long-awaited Detox, bitch,” Dre said to commence the song. “But maybe I don’t wanna stop/ Maybe I don’t wanna quit/ Maybe I like ho’s/ Maybe I don’t want a wife/ Maybe I’m psycho/ … Maybe we need to breathe some life in this sh–/ Maybe we are the life of this sh–.” After a space with no vocals, where the chorus would presumably go, Jay-Z arrives on the song. “Dre, I think I need my sponsor,” he says. “Trying to grow, but I just can’t seem ta/ Having trouble cleaning up, I’m like FEMA/ All these little haters got me back with the nina/ Got me bringing guns to work, Gilbert Arenas,” the Jiggaman adds later in his bars. “I’m in this party/ I’m up to no good/ And I should be ducking these clubs, Tiger Woods.” Besides Jay-Z, the collaborators that Dre has had in the lab with him for Detox have been pretty impressive — as expected. Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, the Game, Nas, R. Kelly, Scott Storch, T.I., Nas, 50 Cent and Eminem have all recorded with Dre over the past few years for the album. What do you think of the leaked version of “Under Pressure”? Is it possible for Detox to live up to the hype? Share your opinions in the comments. Related Artists Dr. Dre Jay-Z

Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Due June 8

New single, ‘Not Myself Tonight,’ to premiere on singer’s Web site Tuesday. By James Dinh Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Photo: RCA It’s been three-and-a-half years since Christina Aguilera released Back to Basics, her last full album of new material, but the singer is finally ready to hit the music scene again. Over the past few years, she’s remained busy raising her son Max and wrapping up production on her film debut “Burlesque,” but on Thursday (March 25) she announced that her fourth studio album, Bionic, will drop on June 8, and its first single, “Not Myself Tonight,” will premiere at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday on ChristinaAguilera.com and will be available on iTunes on April 13. “Working on this album with so many talented artists and producers that I admire was really an amazing experience,” she said in a press release. “The artists I chose to work with added so many unique sonic layers to Bionic. My intention was to step into their world and what they do combined with my own vision and sound. The results were magic,” she said of her collaborators, which include Sia, Tricky Stewart, Polow Da Don, Linda Perry, Le Tigre, Hill & Switch and Ladytron, among others. “Not Myself Tonight” was produced by Polow Da Don and an early preview may be in the works, as an empty media player is on her Web site and asks fans to come back on Friday “for an exclusive preview.” Earlier this week, the song’s single artwork and lyrics were posted on Aguilera’s site; the lyrics suggest a re-emergence of the singer’s raunchy side that she flaunted during on 2002’s Stripped : “The old me’s gone I feel brand new/ And if you don’t like it, f– you.” Fans got an early glimpse of the singer’s new material when she debuted “Lift Me Up” during “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon in late January. The ballad, which was produced and written by Perry, will also be included on the album. Aguilera, whose work has spanned pop and throwback R&B in the past, suggested that yet more styles are featured on Bionic. “I was able to explore and create a fresh, sexy feel using both electronic and organic elements with subject matter ranging from playful to introspective. I am so excited for my fans to hear the new sound. It is something I don’t think anyone will expect,” she said. In addition to the release, the image of what appears to be the cover of Bionic was posted on her site. With her hair slicked back, a head shot of a robotic Aguilera is shown with the right side of her face revealing the mechanics of several musical instruments leading down to her neck with an opened, silver chokehold. Back in January, the singer spoke about the “futuristic” LP to Marie Claire, admitting that “maybe I’ve been afraid in the past to allow myself to go to a place of ‘less singing.’ ” On the new album, “I’m more vulnerable and more strong at the same time.” Are you excited for Christina’s new CD?
