American Idol Live Blog: Top 12 Women Perform

A night after the American Idol men took the stage, and THG live blogged the impressive vocals of Jacob Lusk and company, we’re back! As the top 12 women sing for your vote, join in below with comments, refresh often for updates and let’s see how the female fare… 8:03 The crowd seems especially jazzed for the judges. It can’t be due to J. Lo’s sparkly one-shoulder monstrosity of a top, though. 8:04 Wow. We’re going straight from 24 to 10. Five men. Five women. Tomorrow night’s results show? Gonna be tense. 8:07 Ta-Tynisa Wilson kicks us off with Rihanna’s “Ony Girl (In The World).” Certainly takes confidence to go with this sexy single. Ouch . She sounds very much off key, struggling to hold the final note. Steven and Jennifer simply say she did a “good job,” but neither says it very convincingly. Randy “didn’t quite get it” and J. Lo cuts him off again. 8:15 Naima Adedapo designed her own dress. That’s pretty cool. Going with “Summertime” by Ella Fitzgerald, Adedapo moves well on stage, smiling and engaging the audience. J. Lo goes first this time, calling her an “exotic flower in a rose garden.” Steven says he takes Adedapo “personally,” which sounds like an insult. But he means it nicely. 8:19 Talk about setting the bar high: Kendra Chantelle chooses “Impossible” by Christina Aguilera, while I refrain from making a joke about whether she got wasted prior to the performance. Randy starts with an apt Lauryn Hill reference. The judges are really into the comparisons with other singers this season, aren’t they? J. Lo finds it “amazing.” We mostly agree. Definitely one to watch. 8:27 Rachel Zevita sheds a witch-like cape prior to getting into Fiona Apple’s “Criminal.” She’s trying a bit too hard to come across as edgy, sauntering down behind the judges’ table and remaining deadly serious. Steven says it’s “too Broadway” for him and then remains silent when Zevita that’s the only genre she’s never sung. J. Lo thinks it was the wrong choice, Randy straight up says: “it wasn’t good.” 8:31 Karen Rodriguez breaks into Spanish for Mariah Carey’s “Hero.” Interesting choice. Would I be considered cynical if I said it comes across as pandering? Let’s hear the judges’ take: a series of “wows” from J. Lo. Randy is right that she made the song her own, while Steven sees her as “one of a kind” and we learn that Karen and Lusk are BFFs. 8:40 It’s time for Lauren Turner. She breaks out an Etta James classic, “Seven Day Fool,” which draws vigorous nodding from Randy. Fun song choice, fun performance. We get another comparison: Amy Winehouse meets Florence and the Machine. Seems appropriate. Very solid all around. 8:49 Ashthon Jones sings “Love Over Me” by Monica while wearing the largest ring in Idol history. All three judges love it, praising her look, confidence and sound. She’s Diana Ross, Randy screams out. 8:58 Julie Zorrilla takes a major chance, covering a single by the original champion, Kelly Clarkson. Can the Eva Mendes-lookalike do justice to “Breakaway?” Not really, according to J. Lo, who questions the sincerity of Zorrilla wanting to break away. Once again, Randy says a contestant didn’t bring anything original to the rendition. We’ve gotta agree. 9:01 We hear again how Haley Reinhart wants to be a “visionary” all over the world. Lofty goal, followed by a high bar: “Fallin'” by Alicia Keys. Steven and J. Lo loved it, but we’re with Randy: you need to really mix up such a classic song or else you’ll be compared to the incredible original. 9:10 Thia Megia takes the opposite approach, going with a song from Fame: “Out Here On My Own.” It’s strong, simple, quiet, nothing showy. Steven gushes over her perfect pitch, while J. Lo and Randy also loved it, although the latter goes overboard with the latest comparison: Michael Jackson. 9:14 It’s time to go country with Lauren Alaina . Like Reba McEntire before, Lauren wants us to “Turn on the Radio,” clearly having fun with the performance. The judges are full of praise and we’re on board the Alaina train, despite the odd reference to Ryan as “Peaches.”

We’ll have more on this tonight or tomorrow, but the push to equate Barack Obama with Ronald Reagan by the Left and their acolytes in the media is generating a bit of pushback by those who see more differences than similiarities between the two. SMH: A Dominatrix Nicki Minaj Gets Kicked Out Her London Hotel

After a full day of promo and picture posing, Nicki Minaj made it back to her London hotel to find out that she had kindly been kicked out. Since Nicki landed, the paparazzi and Nicki’s barbz have been camping out in front of the hotel. Management warned the dominatrix barb that if things couldn’t be kept under control she would be getting the boot… SMH!!! Toooooo Much!!!! On another note, in a recent interview, Nicki Minaj speaks on dealing with all the comparisons to the vets in the game. She especially puts emphasis on being compared to Kanye West since they both drop their albums on the same day… “It’s Not Fair”… In our Justin Timberlake Voice —— CRY ME A RIVER!!!!

Ke$ha Ain’t Going Nowhere!

She doesn’t have the best singing voice around – as evidenced by this AMA performance – but Ke$ha has a message for critics in the latest issue of Complex : She ain’t going nowhere! And while she’s sticking around the music business, she might as well do so on roller skates… In an interview with Complex, Ke$ha touches on everything from being turned on by pocket change to being compared to Lady Gaga. Read a few excerpts below: What turns you on that people would find bizarre? A bag full of quarters. Is there a specific type of beard that you’re into? I like the rugged, mountain-man beard, personally. I won’t discriminate, but my favorite kind of beard is one that could potentially be a homeless beard. Like, you actually have to discover if they’re un-groomed for a reason. I like a really unkempt beard. Are you tired of the comparisons people draw between you, Lady Gaga , and Katy Perry? I actually think that’s cool. Out of that group of chicks, I’m the new bitch on the block, so I’m still getting used to being compared to some of the biggest pop stars in the world, but I don’t take any offense to it. That just means people know my records.

Taylor Momsen on Miley Cyrus Comparisons: Shut the Eff Up!

Miley Cyrus may be a colossal disappointment for a variety of reasons, but at least she doesn’t curse, smoke or look like a raccoon at all times. The same can’t be said for Gossip Girl cast member Taylor Momsen. Speaking to FHM UK , the 16-year old lashed out at critics that compare her to Miley this week, making it very clear that she doesn’t see any similarities between the pair. “I’m not looking to be Miley f*cking Cyrus,” Momsen said. “I don’t care about the fame. I do it because I love music. I like making records and if people like them, then we’ll go along for the ride.” Momsen and Cyrus may both act and sing, but that’s pretty much where the comparisons end. The former fronts rock band The Pretty Reckless, while the latter is nothing more than a Britney Spears wannabe at this point. Still, Taylor feels a need to distance herself from Miley, adding: “I think the Disney bubblegum shit that the world is living right now is pathetic. I thought we passed that repression.” It’s unclear what that actually means, but Gossip Girl fans have made their opinion of Momsen and her character well-known: Jenny Humphrey has been written out of most of next season on the show. Good riddance.

Vampire Weekend ‘Holiday’ Video Premieres Today On MTV/MTV2!

Low-budget clip for Contra single shows band dressed in powdered wigs, stockings and ordering burgers. By James Montgomery Vampire Weekend’s “Holiday” Vampire Weekend ‘s “Holiday” is a rather cutting assessment of capitalism and colonialism and the special sort of cocoon both those things help create. With lyrical nods to republics on the beach, the tea trade and a girl who decides to protest the war by going vegetarian (as opposed to, you know, doing anything that may actually help), it’s the kind of whip-smart pop that’s in short supply these days — a cranky and clever tweaking of hideous Americans abroad, and equally hideous Americans at home. Needless to say, “Holiday” probably won’t be burning up the nation’s airwaves anytime soon, but that hasn’t stopped VW from releasing it as the third single off their surprisingly successful Contra album. And you can sort of understand why. After scoring a #1 album and a pair of unlikely rock-radio hits, they’re playing with house money at this point anyway. To accompany their odd choice of single, the band has delivered an equally odd video, a delightfully low-budget clip ( no Jake Gyllenhaal here) that sees the Vampire guys parading around Southern California dressed as dandy, European gentlemen of leisure. Powdered wigs, waistcoats, breeches, stockings and a whole lot of ruffled accoutrements — it’s all there. And while it may be hilarious to watch them prance around SoCal, order In-N-Out Burger (at least, I think it’s In-N-Out Burger) and pound on surfers down by the beach, there’s probably a deeper message here: These are exactly the same kind of out-of-touch, entitled intellectuals frontman Ezra Koenig is singing about in the song — only from about 300 years ago. These powdered ponces conquered, enslaved and trampled those less fortunate than them, and did so for centuries, before they were eventually overthrown (and mostly beheaded) by the same folks they’d been subjugating. I’ll let you draw the comparisons to, say, the last 50 years of U.S. foreign policy or the creeping advance of capitalism on the undeveloped world … and what may very well be waiting around the corner for us one day if we keep it up. Or, you know, you could just laugh at the dudes in the funny wigs. It kind of works either way. And that’s sort of the brilliance of Vampire Weekend. “Holiday” might not be the same kind of hit as “Cousins” or “Giving Up the Gun,” but that’s hardly the point. Just by getting this one out there, they’ve already won, even if it’s just a tiny victory. Don’t let the boat shoes and pique polo shits fool you — Vampire Weekend are downright dangerous dudes. That you can dance to, of course. Do you think “Holiday” will be another Vampire Weekend hit? Let us know in the comments Related Artists Vampire Weekend

Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Will Settle Gaga Debate, Songwriter Says

‘Once the album comes out … I don’t think the comparisons will last,’ says Claude Kelly. By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Photo: RCA Fans have already gotten a pretty good taste of what they can expect from Christina Aguilera ‘s upcoming album, Bionic, out June 8. In addition to the singles “Woohoo” and “Not Myself Tonight,” other tracks from the disc have leaked online. Despite rumors that worries about the album’s success are what prompted Aguilera to postpone her summer tour to 2011, songwriter Claude Kelly said it will be the album of the summer. “I’m excited about Christina,” Kelly told MTV News at the “Sex and the City 2” premiere, where he also dished about working with Leona Lewis and Jennifer Hudson on their track for the flick. Kelly said that he enjoyed hitting the studio with Aguilera to cook up some choice tunes for the release. “I did ‘Woohoo,’ which is the single out now,” he shared about the track that also features Nicki Minaj. “I did ‘Glam, which is kind of like futuristic, kind of an homage to ‘Vogue’ by Madonna. [I did] a song called ‘Vanity.’ [I did one called] ‘I Hate Boys.’ She has a fun record coming out.” Aguilera’s look during TV appearances and videos of late has led some Lady Gaga fans to accuse Christina of biting Gaga’s style . Kelly said the two pop queens couldn’t be more different. “I will say that there’s room for everybody,” he said. “I also know Gaga as well. She’s incredible. They really are honestly two different powerhouses. Once the album comes out and they hear what Christina’s doing, I don’t think the comparisons will last. But, I mean, at the end of the day, they’re both amazing women.” Are you looking forward to Christina’s new album? Tell us in the comments! How Does ‘MacGruber’ Compare To Past ‘Saturday Night Live’ Films?

‘We weren’t worried about the ‘SNL’ aspect of the movie,’ Will Forte tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News Let’s play Rank the “Saturday Night Live” Movies! We’ll go first. “The Blues Brothers” did it first and, arguably, best. “Wayne’s World” has got to be up there, and for some strange reason, we have a soft spot for “Coneheads.” At the other end of our highly subjective spectrum, we’ve got “It’s Pat,” “The Ladies Man” and “Blues Brothers 2000” duking it out for last place. Where might Will Forte’s “MacGruber” fall? The early buzz on this adaptation of a sketch about a wildly incompetent action hero is largely positive. Forte himself isn’t bothered by the comparisons to “SNL” flicks past. If you ask him, the varying reception of those films is about on par with the way decades’ worth of movies have been embraced — or rejected — by the public. “The ‘SNL’ track record is about the same as the movies-in-general track record,” he told MTV News. “There are a lot of crappy movies out there and a lot of great movies. Sure, there has been some ‘SNL’-based movies that have sucked; there have been some great ones.” And the great ones, as anyone who plays Rank the “Saturday Night Live” Movies can attest, are certainly in dispute. No one will argue against the enduring appeal of the first “Blues Brothers” or “Wayne’s World” films, but it gets trickier from there on out. Just ask “MacGruber” director Jorma Taccone. “It’s funny, because I feel like there tends to be a lot of bad stuff talked about ‘SNL’ films online, and some of those films I think have a lot of funny parts to them. I’m actually a fan of ‘Ladies Man,’ and I’m a fan of ‘Night at the Roxbury.’ Those are funny movies to me. This movie is not at all those movies. It’s entirely different than people are thinking it’s going to be.” For one, half of what flies across the big screen in a series of curses and explosions would never make it onto network TV. And, more importantly, MacGruber doesn’t blow himself up one minute into the story (as happens in all his “SNL” sketches ). The bottom line is that everyone involved had their eyes less on fidelity to sketch comedy and more on making a killer movie. “We weren’t worried about the ‘SNL’ aspect of the movie,” Forte said. “We just tried to make the best movie we could.” Added Taccone: “We just wanted to take this character who we loved, who’s a tremendously flawed individual, who’s somehow loveable, and stick him in an ’80s action movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “MacGruber.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Are Rick Ross And Nicki Minaj The New Biggie And Kim? Lil’ Cease Weighs In

‘Big paved the way for Ross, and Kim paved the way for females that’s hot now,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Lil Cease Photo: Harbody Celebrity Favorites: Lil’ Cease Rick Ross with the fur coat and shades. Nicki Minaj with the green hair and other colorful wigs. While Ross and Minaj have carved out niches with their own distinctive styles, they still hark back to golden memories of the Notorious B.I.G. and Lil’ Kim. Diddy is working with both artists, and now Lil’ Cease, another person who has been a part of Biggie and Kim’s inner circle, said he loves what the Bawse and Barbie are doing. “It’s a good thing to me,” Cease said of the comparisons to his childhood friends. “If people are taking steps into people’s styles like that, that’s paying homage. I definitely looked at Nicki and was like, ‘That’s that Kim remedy.’ I think Ross is nice. To see him be co-signed by Diddy, it gives you that feel. I like it. It’s just showing the influence we had on people. It shows the influence Kim had on females. It shows the influence Big had. I don’t look at it like they’re trying to take [Big and Kim’s] spot or trying to be them. Big paved the way for Ross, and Kim paved the way for females that’s hot now.” Cease said he loves Ricky Ros

Christina Aguilera’s Fans Weigh In On ‘Not Myself Tonight Video’

‘Christina is a pop-cultural reflection of the world,’ one fan says. By Eric Ditzian Christina Aguilera in her video for “Not Myself Tonight” Photo: RCA Christina Aguilera is back, and she didn’t bring a whole lot of clothing with her. The star’s “Not Myself Tonight” video showcases the 29-year-old singer in one revealing outfit after another — a chain-mail bikini, a see-through raincoat, some red lingerie — in a pop-culture mashup that pays tribute to Madonna, Michael Jackson and others. It’s quite a rebirth for Aguilera as she gets set to unleash Bionic , her first studio album since 2006. And, on an otherwise sleepy Friday afternoon, the video has been burning up the Web. “I just love it,” says MTV reader dvnovert. “Christina is a pop-cultural reflection of the world. She breathes in culture just like all of us, but expels [it in] a deliciously fresh and exciting and superior way to all that have come before and all who have come since. Christina is the one to beat: beauty, brains, rhythm, voice and charisma to boot!” Many fans have noted similarities between the video and recent efforts from Lady Gaga. Reader Mark Anthony Sanchez, for one, views Aguilera as the true artistic trailblazer. “I love the direction she is taking her music,” he writes. “Since her start she was doing her own thing and not caring what anybody says. This woman has been around 10-plus years and for anybody to pin her against Gaga is seriously dumb. They are their own person and do their own thing.” MTV reader Rbearcuub agrees, writing, “You cannot even compare them. What do they have in common? Music! Gaga at least sings, unlike [Britney] Spears in concert. But she has her lane and Xtina has her own damn highway.” Comparisons aside, some folks simply weren’t digging the video. “Christina used to give videos that were fresh and edgy with meaning and integrity,” wrote reader Ericstar. “This oversexed video reveals a huge awareness among her people that she is now competing on the same platform as Gaga. The video lacks depth and does no more than try to prove that Christina is more advanced than the new top female in her arena. She’s relying strictly on fetish to do it. If Christina disagrees with the comparisons and feels like Gaga has borrowed one too many pages from her book, she ought to be confident enough to challenge herself and step out in a new direction.” But as most fans realize, that’s exactly what she already is doing. “I think what Christina did was amazing,” reader Marco wrote. “I love her video and I can’t wait to have Bionic . You rock Christina, you are the best.” What do you think of Christina’s new video? Let us know in the comments below!
