Watch: Chris Rock And Keegan-Michael Key School Black Folks On How To Respond To Voter Suppression

More:

C hris Rock and Keegan-Michael Key brought humor to the serious issue of voter suppression in a video that informs African-Americans about their rights. SEE ALSO: ‘I Approve This Message!’: Oprah Fires Up Georgia Voters For Stacey Abrams The comedians appeared together in a video clip released on Friday by NowThis and Color of Change days before the crucial midterm elections on Tuesday. Since the  early voting season got underway , advocacy groups have been fighting against a growing list of alleged suppression efforts by Republicans—much of it targeting African-Americans. In the opening scene, Key says, “Hi. I’m Keegan-Michael Key, and I’m here to talk to you about the importance of…” Rock’s voice is heard in the background yelling, “Cut!” He pushes Key to cut to the chase because people already know his name. Key tries again, rambling on about “efforts underway across America” to prevent “certain groups from voting.” “What are the groups you’re talking about? New Kids on the Block? Spice Girls? ‘Groups?’” Rock asks. Key explains that he’s talking about Black people. “Well then say Black people!” Rock shouts. Look at the video embedded in this tweet. Watch @KeeganMKey and @chrisrock explain what to do if someone tries to stop you from voting (with @ColorofChange ) pic.twitter.com/BsT6yDLn30 — NowThis (@nowthisnews) November 1, 2018 The GOP—fearful of the impending Democratic blue wave—was  desperately using every trick in the book to retain control of Congress and state governments. Suppression efforts targeting Black voters  have already been seen in Georgia , where  Stacey Abrams  could make history as the first African-American woman governor. Voting rights advocates have been busy battling those efforts, including a  lawsuit against Georgia election officials for the unusually high rate  of absentee mail ballot rejections. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is one of the groups at the forefront of the battle. In addition to filing lawsuits and legal briefs on issues surrounding voting rights, the organization administers a hotline, 866-OUR-VOTE, year-round under the  Election Protection  coalition of advocacy groups. The hotline is a resource for voters throughout the nation who want to report complaints or obtain information to facilitate voting. A team of trained legal volunteers will receive the calls and answer any questions. Every eligible voter deserves an opportunity to participate in our democracy. If you experience problems voting, get LIVE help from a trained volunteer by calling #866-OUR-VOTE. #BeAVoter pic.twitter.com/FkBsbbIjLF — Lawyers' Committee 866-OUR-VOTE (@LawyersComm) November 2, 2018 In the video, Keys looks into the camera and informs viewers that they have a right to a provisional ballot if something goes wrong at the polls, such as poll workers unable to find their name on the voting rolls. Trump Takes A Swipe At Andrew Gillum’s HBCU Education

T he divider in chief, Donald Trump , took steps to widen the racial wedge between the Florida gubernatorial candidates by implying an education at a historically Black college or university ( HBCU ) was decidedly inferior to the Ivy League. The president made his ignorant statement in a tweet despite growing evidence that the Democratic candidate — Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum — has consistently displayed a far more superior ability to campaign based on fact and policy over his opponent, Republican Ron DeSantis . But of course, Trump never lets the facts get in between him and his Twitter fingers. In Florida there is a choice between a Harvard/Yale educated man named @RonDeSantisFL who has been a great Congressman and will be a great Governor – and a Dem who is a thief and who is Mayor of poorly run Tallahassee, said to be one of the most corrupt cities in the Country! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 29, 2018 Gillum is a proud graduate of Florida A&M University, an HBCU. Nevermind the racist dog whistling in the tweet that was Trump calling Gillum “a thief,” an unsubstantiated charge from a president who routinely reinforces negative stereotypes about Black people. DeSantis has shown himself to be an unabashed racist, something that his alma maters Harvard and Yale universities can’t be proud of, no matter if the schools’ histories reflect otherwise (they do). Further, Gillum has twice upstaged DeSantis in both gubernatorial debates held last week, showing a masterful knowledge of policy compared to the racist attacks the Republican and his supporters have consistently resorted to. Trump’s tweet came less than a week after a report that he planned to make last-ditch pleas for votes for controversial GOP candidates. While Gillum has been consistently polling ahead of DeSantis, who resigned from Congress under a cloud of controversy stemming from a  House ethics complaint against him , early voting reports in Florida have indicated not many Democrats were going to the polls, which could spell bad news for the mayor. But if the election is decided based on policy plans and not racial rhetoric — DeSantis and his supporters have made multiple “monkey” references about the Democrat who could become the Sunshine State’s first African-American governor — Gillum should emerge victorious, by far. As of early Monday afternoon, Gillum was reportedly ahead of DeSantis by either 1 or 5 percentage points, depending on the poll . While political polling has proven to be an inexact science (see the 2016 presidential election for more on this), polling in the state of Florida has been pretty consistent over the years, especially when it comes to the governor’s race. “Four years ago, Charlie Crist led Rick Scott in eight of the final 20 2014 gubernatorial race public polls, Rick Scott led in six, and six polls showed them tied,” the Tampa Bay Times reminded readers on Monday. “The final polling average showed Crist with by just .6 percentage points, and Scott won reelection by 1.1 percent.” SEE ALSO: Mail Bomber Targeted Andrew Gillum, Too Andrew Gillum Reportedly Has Trump Scrambling In Last-Ditch Move For DeSantis [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3833456″ overlay=”true”]

Donald Trump on Taylor Swift: Her Music Sucks!

Years ago, Taylor Swift released an album titled “Red.” Nevertheless, this beloved solo artist stunned the universe this week when she made her political opinion known for the first time in her professional life, revealing herself to be… … a democrat! Or at least to be supporting a pair of democrats in her home state of Tennessee: Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Cooper is running against Marsha Blackburn, who Swift wrote on Instagram has a voting record in Congress that “appalls and terrifies me,” explaining thusly: “She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. “She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. “These are not MY Tennessee values.” Asked about these comments on the White House lawn on Monday afternoon, President Trump said, sort of humorously: “Let’s say that I like Taylor’s music about 25 percent less now.” He added more specifically: “Marsha Blackburn is doing a very good job in Tennessee. She’s leading now substantially which she should. “She’s a tremendous woman. I’m sure Taylor Swift doesn’t know anything about her.” Swift actually outlined her take in a very detailed, calm and fair manner. But she's been pilloried by republicans nevertheless, of course. They apparently think Kanye West is a well-educated political guru who should be listened to and respected when it comes to his opinion… … but Swift is a vapid moron whose viewpoint she be scoffed at, naturally. “So @taylorswift13 has every right to be political but it won’t impact election unless we allow 13 yr old girls to vote,” Mike Huckabee tweeted for instance. “Still with #MarshaBlackburn.” Okay, but — who wants to do the math for the former Governor and explain to him how old Taylor Swift fans who started following her after the release of her first album in 2006 are now? WATCH TRUMP'S RESPONSE TO SWIFT IN THE VIDEO FEATURED HERE.

Donald Trump on Taylor Swift: Her Music Sucks!

We Are Living In A Simulation Because Taylor Swift Is Now More Woke Than Kanye West And Everyone Is Confused

https://www.instagram.com/taylorswift/?hl=en Taylor Swift > Kanye West Remember about 10 years ago when Kanye West hopped on the VMA stage to yank Taylor Swift’s award and pay homage to Beyonce? That sparked a feud between the two that hasn’t ended. No one would have thought, 10 years ago, that in 2018 we’d be getting a Taylor Swift that speaks up for black people and a Kanye West who wears MAGA hats. But that’s exactly what happened. Swift just dropped this IG note on her political views and, spoiler alert: she’s voting democrat. I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! That’s right, Swift cares more about black people than Kanye West. This is some damn BS. If you had told me two years ago Kanye would be running around in a MAGA hat while Taylor Swift was endorsing democratic candidates, I would have smacked you to the ground and stolen your wallet for wasting my time. — KB (@KaraRBrown) October 8, 2018 Twitter is…not okay. Take a look at everyone having an existential crisis over this. WTF, Kanye. WTF indeed.

Gillum said the FBI told him he’s not the focus of its investigation. The mayor noted that he’s cooperating fully with both agencies–unlike President Donald Trump and lawmakers like his GOP rival for governor, Rep. Ron DeSantis , who have tried to hobble the probe into possible collusion between the president’s campaign and the Russians. “Here in Florida, we’ve done everything we can to aid the agency, while Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump have done the exact opposite — demonizing the FBI and making the case that collusion is not a crime,” Gillum’s camp said, according to ABC News . In fact, they simply raise more questions about Gillum’s ongoing involvement,” a DeSantis spokesman said. Gillum’s connection to the investigation is reportedly centered on his relationship with local businessman and lobbyist Adam Corey , a college friend who at one time was Gillum’s campaign treasurer. Corey had reportedly set up meetings between undercover FBI agents, posing as land developers, and Tallahassee officials—including Mayor Gillum. While casting stones at Gillum, DeSantis has been actively trying to place hurdles in front of the government’s investigation of the president. Trump named DeSantis as one of his “ warriors” in Congress . One of DeSantis’ “warrior” moves happened in 2017 when the congressman unsuccessfully pushed for legislation to stop funding the Russia investigation.
