Michael Cohen Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison, Partially For Lying To Congress To Save Trump

Source: TIMOTHY A. CLARY / Getty Michael Cohen Sentenced To Three Years In Prison Donald Trump ‘s former lawyer Michael Cohen is going to prison for three years for what a judge described as a “veritable smorgasbord of criminal conduct” according to NBCNews . Included in the formal charges are counts of illegal hush payments to women, failing to report millions of dollars in income, and most damningly, lying to Congress about Trump’s business in Russia. Judge William Pauley was most disgusted by Cohen’s greed and used that as a significant reason to hit the janky lawyer with a field goal number. A crying Cohen seemed to accept responsibility for his crimes, but still, wheelbarrowed a pile of blame onto Donald Trump’s Ferragamo dress shoes. “I have been living in a personal and mental incarceration ever since the day that I accepted the offer to work for a real estate mogul whose business acumen that I deeply admired,” Cohen told the judge, saying his blind loyalty to Trump led him to choose “darkness over light.” Boo-the-f**k-hoo. “It was correct but for a much different reason than he was implying. It was because time and time again I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds,” Cohen said. This is a grown-a$$ man who is basically saying he got peer-pressured into lying and essentially stealing money from the government. GTFOHWTBS. New CBC Chair: Impeaching Trump ‘Is Not Going To Be Top On Our Agenda’

Read the rest here:

Source: Paul Morigi / Getty   D emocrats as recently as Sunday appeared ready to pounce on President Donald Trump  after the latest evidence from Special Counsel Robert Mueller ‘s probe suggested the president’s hands were filthy from Russian dirt. And with House Democrats in January taking control of committees directly involved with investigating the president, some incoming committee chairs have talked about the possibility of impeachment. But going after Trump in 2019 was not a priority of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the group’s newly elected chair Rep. Karen Bass told NewsOne on Monday. “Impeachment is not going to be top on our agenda,” the California congresswoman said during a brief phone conversation. “It doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. But at this point in time, we really think that some of the things our community needs are way more important than us going after impeachment now.” Bass’ comments came ahead of an Associated Press report that Democrats were toning down their aggressive rhetoric about impeaching Trump. At least immediately. See Also: Elijah Cummings Vows Evenhanded Investigation Of Trump Instead Of Dragging The President On Friday, Mueller’s office released findings from its investigation of Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, including damning that Trump was “at the center of a massive fraud,” New York Rep. Jerry Nadler , the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, recently told the AP . Cohen admitted to overseeing illegal hush money payment to women who allegedly had sexual affairs with Trump in violation of campaign laws. Mueller’s filing also revealed previously unreported contacts between Trump associates and Kremlin representatives seeking to help the Republican nominee secure victory. “There’s a very real prospect that on the day Donald Trump leaves office, the Justice Department may indict him, that he may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time,” California Rep. Adam Schiff , who’s expected to chair the House intelligence committee in January, said Sunday. Still, many Democrats were cautious . For one thing, while they will control the House, Democrats will need Republicans’ support in the Senate to remove Trump. That could be a long way off given how partisan members of Congress have been under Trump. There was also concern about a political backlash similar to what happened to Republicans when they tried to remove President Bill Clinton  in the late 1990s. “I think impeachment might be something we are forced to do as more evidence comes out, but it doesn’t make sense for us to go there first when there’s no way it would be successful now,” Bass said. One of Bass’ top priority as CBC chair was protecting voting rights for African-Americans, pointing to the gubernatorial election that was stolen from Stacey Abrams in Georgia and the ongoing voter fraud scandal in North Carolina. “We have so much to do, given the last two years of this administration,” she said. “There has been no accountability, where we see him systematically go after gains our community achieved decades ago.” SEE ALSO: Meet Tammy Kemp, The Black Judge Assigned To Amber Guyger Murder Trial For Killing Botham Jean Omarosa Takes A Swipe At John Kelly’s Dismissal As White House Chief Of Staff [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3839541″ overlay=”true”]

Black Republican Mia Love Admits There’s ‘No Home’ For Minorities In Hostile Trump-Led GOP

I think it’s because they feel like they have a home — or Democrats make them feel like they have a home. I’ve said this to my colleagues, we need to do a better job than just talking about how great our policies are, we need to actually let people know that we care. They need to like Republicans,” the Utah representative told the Washington Examiner  recently. Love was defeated in her bid for a third term in Congress by Democrat  Ben McAdams  in a close race. It’s unclear what the political future holds for Love, who made history as the first and only Black Republican woman in Congress. Many in the GOP hoped that her political success would help to bring racial diversity to the party. Love, the 42-year-old daughter of Haitian immigrants, said she was offended by Trump’s racist rhetoric. Yet, like many of her Republican colleagues, Love went along with Trump’s agenda. Trump publicly showed his contempt for Love on  the day after the midterms . “Mia Love gave me no love and she lost,” Trump said mocking the congresswoman, naming her among incumbent House members who didn’t shower him with praise and were defeated. “Too bad. Sorry about that, Mia.” She said it will be challenging for the GOP to achieve racial and gender diversity while Trump is still in office. The Democrats, on the other hand, gained 40 House seats in the midterm election, fueled in part by African-American women candidates. Sick: Federal Judge Makes Female Genital Mutilation Legal Again

Source: bluecinema / Getty Just when you thought the world couldn’t get anymore disgusting, it does. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman ruled that the U.S. law banning female genital mutilation was unconstitutional and dismissed charges against several doctors in Michigan who carried out the procedure on underage girls as part Muslim sect’s religious practice. The Detroit Free Press reports: The judge’s ruling also dismissed charges against three mothers, including two Minnesota women whom prosecutors said tricked their 7 -year-old daughters into thinking they were coming to metro Detroit for a girls’ weekend, but instead had their genitals cut at a Livonia clinic as part of a religious procedure. U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman concluded that “as despicable as this practice may be,” Congress did not have the authority to pass the 22-year-old federal law that criminalizes female genital mutilation, and that FGM is for the states to regulate. FGM is banned worldwide and has been outlawed in more than 30 countries, though the U.S. statute had never been tested before this case. Female Genital Mutilation is punishable by up to 15 years behind bars in 27 states, including Michigan. But Judge Friedman’s ruling could have an unfortunate ripple effect, normalizing the horrid procedure and causing other states to follow suit. SMH.

Trump Takes A Swipe At Losing Black GOP Candidate Who Was Loyal To Him

Her Democratic challenger Ben McAdams was leading 51.4 percent to Love’s 48.6 percent by early Wednesday morning. McAdams delayed declaring victory, waiting instead for officials to count ballots sent by mail. The Utah lawmaker was among just a handful of Black Republicans in Congress, which includes South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott . Love and Scott “stood beside Trump in support,” according to the Washington Post . But they also distanced themselves from the president when he made controversial statements in support of white supremacists violence in Charlottesville. And Love, a Haitian-American, also had issues with the president when he identified Haiti as one of the “sh**hole countries” Black countries. The congresswoman has been embroiled in a campaign finance scandal which likely contributed to her tight race. She was in hot water with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) over her team improperly raising more than a million dollars for a primary election that was never expected to happen. Love has fought hard to retain her congressional seat—including playing the race card . She went on Fox News radio in September and accused the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic National Committee of targeting her seat because she’s Black. “They do not like the fact that I am a Black female Republican doing everything I possibly can to talk about the issues that help people go from the lowest common denominator up,” Love said in the interview. No More Extra Hours: Californian’s Vote Yes To Year-Long Daylight Saving Time

On March 5th 2017 in Los Angeles, United States of America. Some People Aren’t Happy About It Many Californians seem to be all about getting more sunshine after voters backed a proposition that could make daylight saving time permanent. On the ballot, Proposition 7 asked people whether or not they agreed to stop changing their clocks twice a year. Out of the more than three million ballots counted, around 60.3 percent of people voted Yes, while 39.7 percent of folks opposed the proposition, according to Newsweek. The Daylight Saving Time Act came about in 1949 in the U.S. and requires clocks to be set forward by an hour in the spring and fall back an hour every fall. The Proposition 7 vote came just two days after the U.S. fell back to standard time, gaining an hour of sunlight in the morning, but losing an hour of sunlight in the evening. Democratic Rep. Kansen Chu of San Jose put forth Proposition 7, arguing it’s a public safety issue. Having to spring forward every year causes people to lose an hour of sleep, which could lead to increases in car accidents and heart attacks, he argued. He cited a 2009 Michigan State University study for back-up. “I don’t know anybody who really enjoys doing this adjustment of their schedule twice a year,” Chu said. Thus, he and many other Californians argued that we should just stick to the Spring forward time and keep it there all-year round. Chu said making daylight saving permanent could mean children spending more time outside during the winter and people eating out more, which could boost businesses. Despite Californians voting Yes on the proposal Tuesday, any changes still require the backing of a two-thirds majority in Congress, as well as a change in federal law. Some people aren’t for the proposal. Republican legislator Jim Nielsen said back in June, “It’s fixing something that is not broken. Our society has acculturated itself to Daylight Savings Time. I think it would create too much confusion to change it again.” So far, Hawaii and Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Nation) don’t recognize daylight saving time. Florida became the first state to approve year-round daylight saving time back in March. However, as stated earlier, their move still requires the approval of Congress.

Former National Teacher Of The Year Jahana Hayes Becomes First Black Woman Elected To Congress In Connecticut

You also believe that we have an obligation to be of service to someone else, … that true leaders lead from the front and lead by example, and reject all of this hate and intolerance and this indescribable fear that does not define who we are.” With the election, Hayes added to a number of historic results for a large group of African-American candidates running in the midterm elections across the country. The former national teacher of the year was still teaching full-time in the months leading up to Election Day. What will soon be her former profession has really helped inform the way she approaches politics, she told the Hartford Courant recently. “When you’re a teacher, you don’t pick and choose who you advocate for. You don’t choose who comes to your class. You don’t ask kids, ‘Is your mom a Republican or a Democrat,’ because that’s how I’m gonna decide how hard I’m gonna work for you,” Hayes said . “They come to you and you have a responsibility to leave them better than when they came. I think that’s what government should be doing.” Not unlike other Black women running for key state-wide elected seats, Hayes encountered her fair share of resistance from Democratic Party insiders who initially favored other candidates. Because of some creative maneuvering by the Connecticut state Democrats, Hayes didn’t get the party’s nomination. Still, she won the primary in August and forced Democrats to support her as the party’s nominee. That phenomenon was similar to those we saw for other Black women who were still able to win their respective primaries with little or no help from Democrats. Hayes explained why she was running for Congress when she declared in July. “Who will speak for them?” Hayes recalled asking herself one day while looking at her students. Thanks to the voters of Connecticut, that question has been answered, and then some. ‘Dirty Tricks’: Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines

Read the original:

G eorgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp  stooped to a new low, even for him, in his ongoing efforts to keep Black people from voting for Stacey Abrams , the Black woman running against him for governor. Voting machines, which fall under the responsibility of the secretary of state, were delivered to majority Black precincts without any cords to provide them with electrical power for voters to cast their ballots. Kemp’s “dirty tricks” caused delays of up to four hours at polling places where hundreds of voters at a time were left waiting. See Also: Coincidence? Black People In Georgia Typically Get The Oldest Voting Machines, Increasing Chances Of Error “Brian Kemp is playing in the game and he’s also the referee!”  Rashad Robins , president of the racial justice group Color of Change, told NewsOne Tuesday afternoon. “The word we’re hearing is about suppression and dirty tricks, long lines and broken down polling places.” Kemp, who has President Donald Trump ’s endorsement, oversees the election system. He’s also been on the receiving end of multiple federal lawsuits over his attempts to suppress Black votes. They range for rejecting certain absentee ballots , blocking approximately 53,000 voter registration forms and purging some 700,000 voters from the state’s voting rolls—all targeting African-American voters. Here are just a few of the reports that flooded social media about suppression in Georgia. No power cords for voting machines in African American majority neighborhood in Georgia. This is a disgrace. I don’t believe in coincidences. Everyone should assume this is all orchestrated by Kemp. SMH! @tomreganWSB pic.twitter.com/YTXdXLAHzG — Everything Georgia (@GAFolIowers) November 6, 2018 Many of the reported problems apparently stemmed from old, decrepit voting machines that are concentrated in poor communities. “The counties and cities with the fewest resources are voting on the oldest equipment that tend to have the most problems,”  Edgardo Cortés , an election security advisor at the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program, confirmed to NewsOne during an interview on Monday. Kemp and Abrams were locked in a neck-and-neck race. Abrams has the chance to become the nation’s first African-American woman governor—in a red state that has not elected a Democratic governor in two decades. “Stacey Abrams’ opponents recognize that the only way they could win—when our folks are fired up—is to suppress the vote,” Robinson, of Color of Change said. “What I do think is really exciting is that folks, in the face of all that, are still turning out in large numbers.” SEE ALSO: Make Massa Happy! Ayanna Pressley Becomes First Black Woman To Represent Massachusetts In Congress

Read the rest here:

A yanna Pressley on Tuesday night officially became the first Black women to represent Massachusetts in Congress after officials confirmed her inevitable victory. The Democrat ran unchallenged in the general election after she unseated the incumbent, 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, in a seemingly improbable upset that was all part of a larger “Blue wave” of Black women candidates winning primaries across the country. #BREAKING : Democrat Ayanna Pressley is projected to win in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, becoming the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress in state history. https://t.co/aEbQQMVVRY pic.twitter.com/OMj07Vx4RW — NPR Politics (@nprpolitics) November 7, 2018 Pressley, who was set to take over the Seventh Congressional District, told NewsOne shortly before her landmark victory in September that her years serving on the Boston City Council as its first African-American woman prepared her for this moment. She was especially nonplussed by how the Democratic Party hadn’t been rallying around her. “I was not surprised, mostly because I knew what I was embarking upon, that this would likely be a lonely, uphill, and bruising journey,” Pressley said at the time . “We’re doing something disruptive, challenging conventional wisdom, narratives and norms about who has a right to run, when you can run, and whether or not you can win.” Pressley was now on the precipice of stepping into the same congressional seat once occupied by John F. Kennedy ahead of his run for president in the 1960s. Providing some much needed political perspective in the era of Donald Trump, Pressley told the New York Times that she was cautiously optimistic for the future. “With our rights under assault, with our freedoms under siege, it’s not just good enough to see the Democrats back in power, but it matters who those Democrats are,” she said. “Change isn’t waiting any longer. We have arrived, change is coming and the future belongs to all of us.” SEE ALSO: The Power Of The Black Vote And How To Make Each One Count Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3835357″ overlay=”true”]

Source: Jeff Swensen / Getty Today is the day, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today is the day to exercise your right as an American and cast your vote which could potentially change the current state of the country. Midterm elections don’t usually get as much attention as they are this year — but that’s because there are some massive changes to be made in this nation , and it starts locally. When it comes to people of color, women and other minorities, this elections is our chance to shift the way America has been running itself for hundreds of years. A total of 34 Senate seats and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be up for grabs when we head to the polls today, which means it’s time to shake sh** up regarding Congress and Legislators.  Folks are even calling this year the most important election in modern day U.S. History. Twitter User Brian Klass wrote :  America’s character & trajectory will be decided today.Today is a referendum on Trumpism. In 2016, many people thought they’d roll the dice with someone who promised to “shake things up.” But now there are no excuses. We know who he is and what he represents. Now we either accelerate Trumpism or stop its forward progress. We’ve watched Cheetoh — er. Trump — disrespect and ostracize many people over the last two years, including African American women . That’s why it’s imperative that women as a whole, but specifically Black women, hit the polls today to change the narrative that has been placed on sistas. The NAACP tweeted, “This election is too important for any eligible voter of color to sit it out. Our lives are on the line, and it’s going to take all of us showing up to the voting booth to put America on the path of respecting our communities and our interests.” “You are not just the future, you are the present. Vote for what you believe in.” – @chadwickboseman . Young people, rise up! Vote November 6th. Our lives depend on it. #NAACP #Turnout18 #IWillVote pic.twitter.com/0gjMYgUMQu — NAACP (@NAACP) November 3, 2018 Let’s face it, voting can be tedious and boring. But like most boring things, it has to be done. So we’ve put together a playlist of songs that can help you through the process. OH and just in case you’re considering not casting a vote this year, think about what happened the last time you didn’t vote.
