Academy Award Nominations − The Behind-The-Scenes Winners & Losers

It’s a good morning for Harvey Weinstein , Fox and Sony Pictures Classics .  Sifting through the more surprising-than-usual list of Academy nominations , these are the three big winners of the fierce behind-the-scenes campaigning that movie studios, their specialty divisions (and their consultants) do to get their pictures, directors, actors, etc. onto the hallowed Oscars short list. The Weinstein Company has the enviable dilemma of now having to decide how to run two Best Picture campaigns for Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained.    It also managed to get Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor nomination for The Master despite Phoenix’s slagging of the Oscars as the  “stupidest thing in the world”  and the picture’s quick fade as a contender in the awards buzz circus. David O. Russell’s nomination, after being passed over by the Director’s Guild , is another sign of TWC’s political muscle, particularly since the Silver Linings Playbook director is an outsider in Hollywood — like Weinstein and Phoenix, for that matter. (Okay, so Weinstein may be way more inside than he was in the Miramax days, but he’s still an outsider. Fox employee and this year’s Oscars host Seth MacFarlane made that clear earlier this morning, when referring to the Best Supporting Actress nominees, he cracked: “Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.”) Fox and Sony also did well in the Best Picture category: Fox 2000 has Life of Pi   and Fox Searchlight has Beasts of the Southern Wild in the top category, but Sony is the more interesting story here.  While the Annapurna-produced Columbia Pictures-distributed Zero Dark Thirty   was nominated for Best Picture as expected, director Kathryn Bigelow’s omission in the Best Director category goes down as one of the biggest snubs of this morning.  On the other hand, the nominations of Sony Pictures Classics’ Amour  in the Best Picture and Best Foreign Picture categories and Michael Haneke for Best Director is quite a coup for the mini major given the competition this year and the film’s difficult subject matter. In other words, Haneke’s gain is related to Bigelow’s loss. Thoughts? Leave them in the comments section. Cooper On De Niro In ‘Silver Linings Playbook’: Calling Him Dad Came ‘From A Real Place’

Bradley Cooper  says it wasn’t a stretch to call Robert De Niro “Dad” in Silver Linings Playbook . The Hangover actor plays Pat Solitano, the bipolar son of De Niro’s extremely OCD Pat Solitano, Sr. in the film, and at the New York premiere party ,  Cooper told us that his prior working relationship with De Niro on Limitless , which blossomed into a friendship, made it easy to channel that familial bond with the Taxi Driver actor.  At a press conference for the movie earlier that day,  Cooper, who lost his actual father in 2011,  told the gathered media that he had trepidations about playing the role of a Philadelphia area man struggling with bipolar disorder. “He really did champion me” to get the part, Cooper said of De Niro, adding that he decided to take the role, in part, because, “I knew that I could say ‘Dad’ and look at him and it would come from a real place.” During the party at the Royalton hotel in midtown Manhattan, I asked Cooper to elaborate upon that comment, and he replied that because of his work with De Niro on their last movie,  “We sort of became great friends,” adding: “I love him.”  That relationship, he explained, became “a real bonus” when it came to the onscreen dynamic of the two actors in Silver Linings Playbook .  With any movie role, Cooper explained, “You need certain anchors, and when I would say say the word ‘Dad’ to him, it just felt very deep and grounded.” In the David O. Russell -directed movie, De Niro gives his most authentic performance as a father since he directed himself in the 1993 picture A Bronx Tale .  He even weeps in the movie — an unscripted moment that was caught on the last take of a highly charged scene shot in the attic of the Solitano family home.  Russell, who, during the press conference, repeatedly referred to the veteran actor as “Mr. De Niro,” said the emotional moment caught him completely off-guard. “I was behind him in the attic going, ‘What’s happening?'” the director recalled. Russell’s son, Matthew, who plays a nosy teen-aged neighbor with a video camera, struggled with a different emotion while shooting a confrontational scene with De Niro: nervous laughter. The director recalled at the press conference that his son said to him that acting opposite De Niro ” was like waking up in Raging Bull . ”  Russell said that he chided his son for the inappropriate outburst, telling him,  “You’ve got to stop laughing.”  But De Niro, he added, figured out a way to work with Matthew’s anxious laughter to ratchet up tension in the scene. Specialty Box Office: Paperboy Strong in Debut; House I Live In , Wuthering Heights , The Oranges Fair Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy lead the pack of specialty newcomers with a solid $110,033 at 11 locations and an average of $10,003. That gives the Oscar-nominated director a respectable first showing for his follow-up to his lauded 2009 film Precious, although it falls short of spectacular. Even so, it bested the weekend’s other new titles in limited release. Only Abramorama’s House I Live In came close with a $9,827 average in 2 theaters, Deadline reports .
