Cultural Critics Dissect The Racial Implications Of Every Single King Kong Film In case you weren’t already aware, there’s a new King Kong movie out called ‘Kong: Skull Island’ which stars Samuel L. Jackson. With the arrival of this latest version, our friends over at NPR took the time to discuss the racist undertones of the previous Kong films — and whether it’s at all possible for this film to avoid those issues. The first King Kong movie, which was released in 1933, starred Fay Wray as the blonde-haired white woman among explorers in search of Skull Island — geographically somewhere near Indonesia, but whose “natives” are normally depicted as dark-skinned savages who kidnap the blonde to sacrifice her to Kong. In later iterations of the film, the woman is played by Jessica Lange (1976), Naomi Watts (2005) and this time Brie Larson. Regardless of the choice in heroine, the figure of Kong pretty much HAS to be taken as a metaphor for black masculinity and it’s easy also to draw the line from that metaphor to one of the black male threat to white women. Members of the panel point out that this time around Samuel L Jackson — who wants revenge against Kong– is there to help prevent that trope of white men coming to the rescue of a white woman in danger from a big black ape. Have a listen below. Have you seen ‘Kong: Skull Island?’ Do you think the film manages to steer completely clear of racial stereotypes? WENN
It’s no secret that President Obama is not a hero in the Republican circle, but the matter of his race is where America should draw the line. Yes, Obama is the country’s first Black president, and political pundits, conservative cartoonist, and all around racists, love to jump and attack his skin color… Continue
Now we know what it takes to make Rush Limbaugh issue an apology: money. Or a lackthereof. Facing the loss of sponsors following his referral to Sandra Fluke – a Georgetown student who tearfully explained to the press last week why health insurance companies should cover the cost of contraception – as a slut , the radio host actually took to his website yesterday and wrote the following: “For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke. I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit? In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level. My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.” Is Limbaugh still wildly off base? Of course. Fluke is pushing for health insurance companies to cover birth control, not American citizens. And her argument is based around non “social activities,” specifically the case of how contraception can assist with medical conditions such as ovarian cysts. And why doesn’t Rush create a similar stir over health insurance companies covering Viagra? Still… the guy apologized. That’s amazing. Sadly, this also means the Mayans were correct: the world is clearly about to end.
Kim Kardashian has no problem letting cameras into her life or athletes between her legs. But the reality star has to draw the line somewhere. And that place is apparently at her front gate. A fan showed up at the edge of Kim’s property today, and while no incident seems to have gone down, Kardashian did take to Twitter to warn off others. She wrote: I pride myself in being very open & available to my fans, but the one place I won’t interact or tolerate people showing up to is my home. I wont answer my gate & I don’t find it appropriate. This is my personal space & my comfort zone & when that is violated, I have a problem. I luv 2 meet my fans,u mean the world 2 me but I please ask that u don’t show up 2 my home.It scares me&I feel it violates my personal space. Security will be enforced 24hrs a day. Looks like I will be moving soon… Speaking of violating Kim’s personal space — ok, nevermind. Stalking actually is a serious issues and we agree: chill, fans. [Photo: WENN.com]
President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle will appear together on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in May, as the TV chat show queen nears the end of her 25-year reign. The White House and publicists for the daily TV show said on Tuesday the Obamas would tape their appearance in Chicago on April 27, and the show will air on May 2. Publicists said it would be the Obamas’ first joint appearance on “Oprah” since 2006. Winfrey, regarded as the most influential woman on U.S. television, campaigned publicly for Obama in his 2008 run for the White House and helped raise millions of dollars for his campaign. She has interviewed Obama several times in the past, both before and after his election. Winfrey announced last year that she would end her popular syndicated TV show, which airs in some 140 countries, in order to focus on her new cable TV channel OWN, which launched in January. The last original episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will air on May 25. Will you be watching?? Source
She’s been a bad mutha-shut-yo-mouth for a long time now. Clap for her. Jennifer Lopez admits she loves glamming it up as a judge on American Idol or for her upcoming album, Love?. But at home with husband Marc Anthony and their 3-year-old twins, Max and Emme, Lopez is a zero-makeup kind of mom. “That’s when I’m my happiest,” she says in this week’s exclusive cover story. “Just being able to touch my face and rub my eyes and put my fingers in my hair and not having to worry about messing it up. It’s so much better.” From her skincare regimen to her grueling workouts and portion-controlled diet, Lopez says she makes a concerted effort to stay in top form. “The thing is, it’s part of my job,” says the singer, who ran a triathlon six months after she gave birth. “I don’t want anybody thinking it’s easy. It does take time and it’s hard work. HDTV wide-screen is nobody’s friend!” Now we rock with JLo, (maybe not her music) but we have to draw the line at some of her in-home practices with her son. After talking about painting her daughter Emme’s nails Jenny from the block says: And what about son Max? “He wants to paint his nails too. Because for him, it’s just paint. He’s like, ‘I want the blue!’” Lopez says, laughing. “Then Marc is like, ‘Why are Max’s nails painted?!’ But he won’t sit still so it’s only like two nails.” We’ll say it again, THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FOR A LITTLE BOY!? Stop with the “princess boy” sh*t, it ain’t cute!! Do you agree that JLo is the world’s most beautiful woman? Flip through and peep some of the sexiest JLo pics. Source
Cowell tells Ryan Seacrest that the TV talent competition’s final two judges may be revealed ‘in the next week.’ By Eric Ditzian Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX Simon Cowell called in to his former “American Idol” buddy Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Wednesday morning (March 23), and in between zinging each other — Simon, for instance, sarcastically suggesting “Idol” needs more mentions that this year’s talent is the best ever, because 16 times isn’t enough — the duo dished a bit of news about the Brit TV personality’s upcoming reality competition, “The X Factor.” While rumors continue to swirl about who will join Cowell and former Island Def Jam chief L.A. Reid on the judging panel, Simon disclosed that he’s eyeing two hosts for the show, much like “Idol” during its first season. Unlike “Idol,” though, which featured Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman during its inaugural season, “X Factor” is targeting both a male and female host. “I think on this show it would be helpful to have two,” Cowell said. While Cowell had no announcements to make about the other judges that will be joining the panel, he did say news will be coming shortly. “Maybe in the next week we’re going to announce the final two,” he revealed. And what about those Nicki Minaj rumors? When Reid joined the conversation and Seacrest asked about a possible meeting between Reid and Minaj, the ex-label boss playfully stumbled though his words and said any such meeting would have nothing to do with “X Factor.” “We’ve got to find people who we like,” Cowell said about other judges. “You’ve got contracts, you’ve got dates, you change your mind, you meet new people. Literally just today, somebody else’s name has come into the frame. It happens.” Cowell, of course, didn’t mention who that new person was. But, he said, the new judge has got to be someone he trusts, much like Reid, who he’s known personally and professionally for a long time. “Simon and I have been friends for many, many years,” Reid explained. “When I met Simon, I thought he was a huge star, and if he could sing, I would have signed him … One day, Simon reached out to me [about joining ‘X Factor’] and, Simon, your exact words were, ‘Are your ears burning?’ ” Who would you like to see on the ‘X Factor’ judging panel? Track is from their upcoming movie ‘High School.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa aren’t at odds on their new track, but the lyricists draw the line at partaking in their recreational activities without chipping in. On the latest track from their forthcoming movie “High School,” Snoop and Wiz retool Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” and Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s “The Girl Is Mine” into an ode to — what else? — their favorite environmental supplement. “The Weed Iz Mine” features both rappers boasting about their pot stashes. “I hear n—-s talk about what they rolling up,” Wiz spits on the synth-heavy number. “Smell what I smoke ‘fore the bag open up.” “This is church music, listen to the choir,” Snoop raps. “To burn my kush you must use fire.” Late last year, the veteran MC and the upstart lyricist announced they were teaming up for a movie and soundtrack venture called “High School.” “We decided to go ahead and say, ‘You know what? Let’s do a movie and a soundtrack and just become, you know, bosom buddies and do what we do ’cause we love what we do and we love each other and at the same time we know what the people want,’ ” Snoop Dogg said . “The people want to see the two generations come together where hip-hop ain’t about old school and new school. It’s just about good music and making good moves and putting something out there that’s classic where people can respect it and say, ‘Yeah, so now, this was some gangsta sh– that really made hip-hop gradually grow to another level.’ ” Related Artists Snoop Dogg Wiz Khalifa
