How’s J. Edgar? Critics, Comedians and Moviegoers Tweet Away Over AFI Fest Opener

J. Edgar is undoubtedly one of the flashiest Oscar contenders this year. With Clint Eastwood’s direction, Dustin Lance Black’s script, and the well-pancaked melodrama of Leonardo DiCaprio, Judi Dench and Armie Hammer, we’re dealing with a formidable award-attractant group. But was the film’s quality worthy of opening AFI Fest this year? Movieline saw J. Edgar last night — along with a bunch of other critics, bloggers and assorted plebes — and we’re not quite sure. Here are the first 140-character reactions to the movie. (We threw in some comedian takes for the hell of it.)

Clint Eastwood Says He’ll Keep J. Edgar’s Sexual Orientation ‘Open to Interpretation’

Oh, great. Just when we thought Armie Hammer’s kiss with Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic was going to be explosive, Eastwood himself is confirming that he’s leaving the first FBI director’s sexual orientation “open to interpretation.” I know a certain TV personality who might have damning evidence to the contrary.

Fox Pays Convicted ‘Barefoot Bandit’ $1.4 Million for His Story

Colton Harris-Moore — a teen who spent two years stealing airplanes, boats and cars, evading authorities, and burglarizing homes — is picking up $1.4 million in restitution money to be paid to his victims from Fox for the rights to his story (though he’ll only collect if Fox exercises its options). Known as the ‘Barefoot Bandit” because he once committed a crime without shoes, the convicted Harris-Moore is in jail awaiting trial for an October sentencing which could land him 10 years in jail. The Oscar-winning scribe Dustin Lance Black was hired to write the picture. May I suggest a title? Barefoot in the Clink ? [ Deadline ]

Joaquin Phoenix’s Restoration to Begin as Hoover’s Gay Lover?

He is still here. According to Vulture , director Clint Eastwood is looking to cast Joaquin Phoenix opposite the rumored Leonardo DiCaprio in Hoover . Phoenix would star as Clyde Tolson, the “reputed paramour and protégé” of Hoover (DiCaprio), in the Dustin Lance Black-scripted biopic. Hopefully this role doesn’t require any onscreen vomiting . Dustin Lance Black on What’s Wrong With Virginia, Mormon Underwear and Polarizing Toronto

Despite the most spirited endorsement of yours truly, Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut What’s Wrong With Virginia hasn’t found the warmest reaction this week at the Toronto Film Festival. This has been a bit confounding to Black, whose follow-up to his Oscar-winning screenplay for Milk tells the wild tale of mentally ill Virginia (Jennifer Connelly), her teenage son (Harrison Gilbertson), her Mormon sheriff/Senate candidate paramour Dick Tipton (Ed Harris), and the small-town cauldron of love, sex, longing, desperation and hypocrisy from which each attempts to climb on the way to a bigger, better life. Whatever that is — each has a different conception, as does Black himself, who today spoke with Movieline about the Canadian cold front and what isn’t as wrong with Virginia as some might think.

True Blood’s Carrie Preston on Playing Arlene, Dying Her Hair, and Being Married to Ben From Lost

On a sanguinary series like True Blood , there are all sorts of bursts of shocking red, but none pops more than the brassy hairdo on top of the equally brassy waitress Arlene, played by Carrie Preston. This season, Arlene’s had plenty to deal with, including an unwanted pregnancy from her bad seed ex, a vampire coworker at Merlotte’s, and the mysterious machinations of Holly (Lauren Bowles), who seems oddly invested in Arlene’s pregnancy. Preston talked to Movieline about those juicy moments, her character’s “drag queen” looks, her husband ( Lost’s Michael Emerson), and her impressively Law and Order -studded resume.
