Jennifer Garner And Ben Affleck Welcome A Son

Samuel is the Hollywood power couple’s third child. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have welcomed their first son into the world. Garner gave birth to the couple’s third child in Santa Monica, California, this week. “We are happy to announce on February 27, Jennifer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Samuel Garner Affleck,” Ben shared on his Facebook page Wednesday, after reports surfaced that his two daughters Seraphina, 3, and Violet, 6, would now have a baby brother. Garner and Affleck announced the pregnancy in August 2011. At the time, insiders shared that it had always been in the couple’s plan to have three kids. “I would have thought [he wanted a boy]. At first … I really thought so,” Garner said in an interview with Jay Leno in January. “And then [Ben] kind of said, ‘Well, we have girls. We know how to do girls. My girls love me. I’m the big guy in the house.’ So now I’m not sure.” Meanwhile, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show, Garner called the possibility of having a boy “cool and different,” adding, “It would be so weird to have a boy.” Garner spoke to Us Weekly in 2011 about how she manages to balance work and family. “You have to have a great nanny, and you have to have a supportive husband,” Garner said. “We figure it out day by day. It’s always messy, and it’s never as glamorous as people think it is, but we get through, and as long as the kids are happy, it’s all good.” As for fatherhood, in an interview back in 2008, Affleck said that he hoped he’s a good dad. “I hope so. I think we all like to see ourselves as good dads, but there’s also that fear, ‘Oh, I don’t want to be like my father,’ or, ‘I hope my kid doesn’t turn out like me.’ You know, I have those feelings too,” he told the U.K.’s Mirror. “So the key is optimism.” Share your well-wishes for the parents in the comments below!

U2’s Edge And MTV Spotlight Homeless Youth In Documentary ‘The Break’

Program executive produced by U2 guitarist airs on MTV March 2 at 8 p.m. By MTV News Staff U2 guitarist the Edge has addressed many social issues through music. He tackles a new epidemic — the growing number of homeless youth — in the MTV documentary “The Break,” for which he serves as executive producer. “The Break” premieres Friday, March 2, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Today, over 1.5 million youth in America have found themselves living in various states of homelessness stemming from all sorts of circumstances. “The Break” introduces viewers to three young people who refuse to give in to the despair and overwhelming weight that landing on the outskirts of society has placed upon them. The documentary delves deep into the journeys of these three young individuals as they take steps to rebuild their lives once they are provided with the tools and guidance necessary to emerge out of homelessness and rejoin society. First, viewers will meet Nancy, a 20-year-old woman who was involved in abusive relationships and has been homeless for two years. Nancy will need to regain her independence and change the behavior that has held her back throughout her life. Then viewers will be introduced to Rob, a talented drummer who came to New York with dreams of becoming a star. After a downward spiral, Rob will have to clean up his act in order to get a fresh start and rebuild his life. Lastly, Ava ran away from her conservative home after clashing with her family over her lesbian lifestyle. With the opportunity to receive training and experience, the academically gifted young woman will be inspired to pursue her dream of becoming a police detective. Providing the trio with support is Anne Mahlum, the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Back on My Feet. The organization uses running as a vehicle to promote the self-sufficiency of the homeless population, providing them with support and resources to help them get closer to their goals. Back on My Feet helps Ava, Nancy and Rob finally have access to the opportunities to create functional, healthy lifestyles. In addition to producing the program, the Edge also wrote the original song “No Home Like Place” for the documentary. Related Artists U2

Tupac Shakur Rejects ‘Role-Model Label’ In 1992

Iconic rapper would have turned 40 years old on Thursday. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by MTV News Tupac Shakur in 1992 Photo: Amalgam Digital Had he lived, Tupac Shakur would have turned 40 years old on Thursday (June 16). The sometimes enigmatic, always fiery rapper would have been a grizzled veteran looking back with nostalgia at the exploits that made him the model of hip-hop machismo and passion. But in an interview with MTV News in 1992, the late rapper expressed eloquently why he wanted no part of the “role model” title he was destined to be tagged with. “I say I don’t want to be a role model in the song, because if I let somebody put the role-model label on me, that limits me,” Tupac explained, referring to his song “Ghetto Gospel.” “Because look at those words, ‘role’ and ‘model.’ Both of those are fake words, to play a role and to model, that’s fake. I’m real. Being real, I drink, I hang out, I party — I do things that a 21-year-old does. And even worse, because I didn’t have a childhood, I’m reliving my childhood. I live life to its fullest, I make mistakes, but I do some stuff that some college kids wouldn’t do, because I live from my heart. I have fun. I don’t want to be a role model, I just want to be real.” If Tupac was anything, it was real. He openly admitted his flaws in interviews and his rhymes, and was known for being fiercely loyal, almost to a fault. The “California Love” rapper never wanted his success to prevent him from being relatable to his friends in the “outer city.” (“It’s the outer city because we’re always left out,” he said.) Never forgetting where he came from was a theme heard throughout ‘Pac’s music and was a trait inherent in people he saw as heroes. ” ‘Role model,’ that’s the word that they make. In the outer city, we don’t have it,” Tupac said. “We had [Mike] Tyson, Tyson was the perfect outer-city hero because he was always on the edge, they always wanted to make him a different type of person. But he would never be that, he would always be on the edge, and they hated him for that. They punished him because he never legitimized himself. He hung in clubs. He was the only person I knew that had millions that hung around with rappers. The only black person I know that made it to that millionaire status and then treated rappers with dignity.” ‘Pac continued, “Every entertainment person who has money looks at rappers as ignorant people with mics, holding our jocks, wearing Kangols and big gold chains. Mike Tyson was the only person I can remember being a millionaire and a real brother. And he was my hero, and I want to be like that. And I want more people like that.” Tragically and ironically, Tupac would be shot multiple times on September 7, 1996, after attending the Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Although one of hip-hop’s most recognizable stars would succumb to his injuries about a week later, his legend has only risen since his sudden death nearly 15 years ago. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Mum On ‘Social Network’ Oscar Nods

‘We’ve said all we’re going to say about the movie,’ a Facebook rep says after Academy Awards announcements. By Gil Kaufman Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Columbia Pictures The creators and cast of “The Social Network” were in major freak-out-excitement mode on Tuesday when Oscar nominations were announced. Continuing a very successful awards-season streak, the film picked up eight Academy Award nominations on Tuesday morning — making it this year’s third most-nominated Oscar contender behind “The King’s Speech” with 12 and “True Grit” with 10, and tied with “Inception.” Among the categories “The Social Network” will compete in on Oscar night next month will be Best Picture, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Fincher, racking up his second career nomination, said he was “very grateful and humbled” by the nods and incredibly proud of his work on the film adaptation of the story of Facebook’s founding. One person who wasn’t joining in the group hug was Facebook founder and twentysomething billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, who isn’t portrayed in the best light in the film. A representative for the site told The Hollywood Reporter , “We’ve said all we’re going to say about the movie and the books … We’ve moved on from this discussion, and we think others have, too.” While Zuckerberg wasn’t exactly up for offering any congratulations, Eisenberg said he’d heard that the Internet mogul had thought the Oscar nominee had done a “nice job” portraying him in the movie. The film depicts Zuckerberg as a ruthless social climber who founded the popular social-networking website mainly to become more popular with the ladies — an image that the Facebook starter has rejected. He’s mostly kept mum on the movie, though he did tell Oprah Winfrey in September that he took some members of his staff to see a screening. “It’s a movie, it’s fun … I can promise you, this is my life so I know it’s not that dramatic,” he said. “The last six years have been a lot of coding and focus and hard work, but maybe it would be fun to remember it as partying and all this crazy drama.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Social Network.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . 30 Seconds To Mars Save Souls In ‘Closer To The Edge’ Video

‘Yes, this is a cult,’ says video that aims to capture fans’ perspective of the live 30STM experience. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge” Photo: EMI With their brand new “Closer to the Edge” video — which premiered on Monday (August 16) — 30 Seconds to Mars have joined a special fraternity. For about as long as there have been rock videos, there have also been “road videos,” grand testaments to the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies, the sheer excitement and terrifying monotony that comes with being a touring rock-and-roll band. Documenting your life on the bus is as much a rite of passage as getting your first platinum plaque (or bedding your first groupie), and as such, basically every rock act worth their salt has, at some point, released a road video … and then released it again on the “Live” DVD. Though, in keeping with pretty much everything they do, 30STM have taken the concept to dizzying, unabashedly all-encompassing heights. Though road videos feature plenty of live footage (as does “Edge”), they are rarely — if ever — about the live experience. Rather, they are about the band themselves, the three or four dudes who sleep on bunks, sign autographs, eat at all-night diners and gaze longingly out the window of their bus. The fans are just part of the background … the occasional slow-motion shot or the supportive arms that keep the lead singer aloft when he crowd surfs. “Closer to the Edge” is different because it is darn-near 100 percent about the fans themselves: their lives and loves and fears, and how all of those things motivated them to attend a 30STM show in the first place. They are the stars, they are the main attraction. The members of the band are basically secondary characters in the thing. Even Jared Leto’s foot-high pink Mohawk. The video — directed by Leto, under the nom-de-film Bartholomew Cubbins — opens with testimonials from sad-eyed 30STM fans, espousing their views on life (“My philosophy is: Don’t regret anything you do … because in the end, it makes you who you are”). Each of them is alone in their own particular way, it would seem, though, through the music of 30 Seconds to Mars, they find a space in which they can coexist with others just like them. They may be outcasts in their high schools or towns, but at a 30STM show, they are anything but. They are, as a title card in the video puts it, part of “The Family.” And that message of inclusion is driven home in a series of stats the video throws at us (“27 Countries. 89 Cities. 1 Band. And All 1,363,930 of You”) and the message, “Yes, This Is a Cult.” Provided you are not curdled with cynicism, it’s a rather amazing idea. 30 Seconds to Mars are less of a touring rock band than they are a barnstorming ministry. They aim to uplift, to inspire, to save, and “Closer to the Edge” is their document of that mission. Sure, there are moments that sort of make you snicker — the sheer bombast of the entire thing, the fact that this is a “film … presented by 30 Seconds to Mars,” the image of Leto’s pink Mohawk peering contemplatively over the Grand Canyon — but there’s no denying the power of seeing tens of thousands of fans finding a simultaneous salvation, of a crowd of individuals becoming one. It’s what rock and roll is supposed to be about, really: inclusion. What do you think of the new 30 Seconds to Mars video? Share your own reviews in the comments below.
