Channing Tatum Talks Possible Johnny Depp ’21 Jump Street’ Cameo

‘It’s really his pick,’ he tells MTV News of roles Depp could play in big-screen adaptation of ’80s cop show. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum Photo: MTV News The last time we asked Johnny Depp about signing on for a cameo in a big-screen adaptation of “21 Jump Street,” the Oscar-nominated actor said simply, “I’m in. I think it’d be pretty easy.” That one question has one of the film’s stars declaring his love for MTV News. “Thank you, so much! Thank you, I love you!” laughed Channing Tatum , who’ll star alongside Jonah Hill in the upcoming project “We’re going to try and do it. With every piece of us, we’re going to try to do it.” Hill, who penned the script, has previously told us he has a specific cameo for Depp in mind, but Channing indicated that the original star of the ’80s TV series would be able to choose from a variety of roles. “There are a bunch of possible characters he could play,” the “Dilemma” star said. “It’s really his pick.” Tatum and Hill’s parts are already set: They’ll play undercover detectives sent back to pose as high school students. “What happens is they get caught up in the high school-ness as opposed to the police work,” Hill previously told MTV News . “And whenever they get too caught up in the high school drama, police work comes in. And whenever they get too caught up in the police work, high school drama comes in.” And just for the record, neither of their characters, Tatum said, are related to characters from the original series. So Tatum won’t be, say, the son of Depp’s Tom Hanson. “It’s an entirely new imagination of what ’21 Jump Street’ is,” he explained. “We’re not doing a spoof whatsoever. It will be crazy characters that are in very unreal circumstances sometimes.” Do you want to see Johnny Depp revisit his “21 Jump Street” character for the movie? Tell us in the comments! Dr. Dre’s Detox, Shyne’s Return And More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for new music from veteran rappers and a crop of breakthrough MCs, including Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole and Jay Electronica. By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre Photo: Interscope Drake-mania, Barbies, reunions, arrests and more dominated the hip-hop headlines in 2010. Lil Wayne went to jail and came out, and T.I. got out of jail only to go back in months later. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj proved the ladies can still get behind a mic, and Drake delivered on his potential with a stellar debut album. Now, looking ahead to the next 12 months, the year in hip-hop promises to be bigger and better than the last, from Dr. Dre’s return to a slew of hungry new rappers ready to vie for the Hottest MC crown. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part one of our preview of stories to follow in ’11. You know what it is. Detox Is (Really) Coming The doctor is finally in! Dr. Dre is set to release his long-in-the-works Detox album . He’s already in promotional mode, having graced the cover of the most recent XXL and dropped his new single, “Kush,” featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon. After a few false starts, Dre is finally on pace to put out the project, which could also prove to be the launching pad for newcomer Kendrick Lamar’s career. Though he’s not signed with the super-producer, the upstart MC is poised to be the latest breakout from Dre’s albums, following perhaps in the footsteps of Snoop ( The Chronic ) and Xzibit ( 2001 ). Put your drink down and enjoy this one. Dipset, Dipset, Dipset This merry band of Harlem bandits put their differences aside last year and celebrated re-grouping with the rumbling “Salute,” their first collective effort in years. Since, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey have gotten back to their old Diplomats tricks. They’ve ruffled a few feathers (Cam and Jones took a few shots at former labelmate Kanye West on their version of “Runaway”), re-injected their sense of humor into the game (joining Kanye for “Christmas in Harlem”) and stoked rumors the New York collective will join Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records. Reunited, and it feels so good. Jay and ‘Ye What more can we say? Two of hip-hop’s reigning kings are joining forces for a full-length project that should provide material for playlists for the rest of the year. The pair dropped their first single, “H.A.M.,” first thing Tuesday (January 11), and the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust, like everyone else, will now analyze, debate and dissect the Lex Luger-powered number. The Now School Big names usually lead the release schedule each Tuesday, but this year, an influx of new stars is set to debut, including Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, Jay Electronica, CyHi the Prynce, Big K.R.I.T. and a solo Pusha T. The collective should ignite the game in the coming months as their profiles grow. With established acts like 50 Cent leaning toward Hollywood and veterans like Nas opting for alternative projects, the young guns have taken aim and are ready to fire. Take cover. Shyne On Hip-hop’s prodigal son, Shyne, is expected to release not one, but two albums this year: his next project on Def Jam (his last for the label was 2004’s self-titled LP) and another tentatively slated to bear the Cash Money Records logo. After serving nearly 10 years behind bars for his involvement in the infamous Club New York shooting, the Brooklyn rapper was deported to Belize, where he’s now based. Despite a rather tepid response to new material he put out last year, the outspoken MC remains as fascinating an artist as hip-hop has seen in recent years. He’s converted to Orthodox Judaism, but his rhymes still feature the potent realism of his previous work. Will his future be as bright as his once-promising past? Mixtape Daily ‘s two-part 2011 preview continues Thursday, and your favorite hip-hop column will be back on the daily grind Tuesday, January 18, where you’ll find the best coverage on all things rap, from mixtapes to DJs to MCs to culture. Jay-Z Calls Jay Electronica ‘A Student Of The Game’

While promoting his new book, ‘Decoded,’ Hov talks up latest Roc Nation signee. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Sway Calloway Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Last week, Jay-Z added another MC to his Roc Nation label roster when he signed New Orleans-born rapper Jay Electronica . Electronica has been building major buzz over the past year thanks to tracks like “Exhibit A” and “Exhibit C,” both of which became Internet sensations. While Electronica’s approach to rap is quite different from Jay-Z’s (relying on more esoteric production styles and vastly different flows), the label boss says that what drew him to his latest charge was his drive and passion for hip-hop. “It’s obvious that he really genuinely loves it and is a student of rap and the game,” he said of Jay Electronica during a conversation with Sway about Hova’s new book “Decoded,” which hits stores on Tuesday (November 16). “You can’t write those sort of songs or come to that sort of conclusion without having a deep love for what you’re doing and a deep understanding and a deep drive.” Jay Electronica has clearly left an impression on Jay-Z, as the latter had a similar level of awe in his words when he introduced Electronica as his label’s newest member during an event at New York’s the Box on Friday night. “My whole goal is to reintroduce magic to hip-hop,” Jigga said of Electronica. “We watched this wizard do his thing. Y’all supported him. And he’s an official Roc Nation signee.” Electronica is the latest member of the Roc Nation empire that includes Jay himself, R&B superstar Rihanna and junior next big thing Willow Smith. Ready to take advantage of the announcement’s buzz, Electronica immediately released two new tracks, “The Announcement” over the weekend and “Shiny Suit Theory” featuring Jay-Z on Monday. Jay Electronica Says Act I Sequel Will Be ‘Finished Soon’

MC wants to drop heavily anticipated follow-up to Eternal Sunshine mixtape on September 19, his birthday. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Electronica Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Jay Electronica is on what can best be described as a world tour. Stationed now in London after making stops in Egypt and Jordan, the New Orleans rapper says he’s overseas both out of curiosity and for work purposes. Electronica is wrapping up Act II, the follow-up to his much-heralded mixtape Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge). His next tape will feature the breakout track “Exhibit C” and mark the first offering from the nomadic MC since he premiered the Just Blaze-produced single earlier this year on Eminem’s SiriusXM satellite radio station, Shade 45. “It’s gonna be finished soon,” Jay Elect told the UK’s DJ Semtex about Act II during a recent interview . “I want to release it on my birthday, that’s September 19, and I’m pushing toward that.” Electronica has raised his profile over the past year or so, from live tweeting the birth of his and Erykah Badu’s child to delivering stellar live shows. He’s also dropped a select sampling of bangers, including “The Birth of Christopher Wallace.” In addition to “Exhibit C,” “Dear Moleskin” is expected to be featured on Act II, as well as collaborations with Nas; production duties are shared by Just Blaze, Dilla, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Mr. Porter and the rapper himself. “I never got a moment where I feel I made it, victory, completion,” Jay told Mixtape Daily back in February. “I’ve had moments of excitement. I can’t believe people are responding like this. It’s an overwhelming thing — even though it’s something you planned for, it’s a surprise.” Are you looking forward to Jay Electronica’s next mixtape? Fabolous Re-Releasing The Funeral Service 2 Mixtape As An EP

‘It started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Def Jam Midseason Salute: Fabolous’ The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 We have to give credit where it’s due. Our segment on Fab’s mixtape has been one of the most applauded productions we’ve put together this year. Shot on location at Benta’s Funeral Home (shout to b-day girl Whitney!), Loso previewed what would be a front-runner for Mixtape of the Year. The Brooklyn native’s street CD was so hot, Def Jam stepped in and told him it was time to make some money off it. Fab is pulling a Drake and re-releasing the tape as an EP, much like Drizzy did with So Far Gone in ’09. “It’s really incredible how people will connect with the work,” Fab said. “I think we put a lot of work into it, with the whole funeral theme. We didn’t just say it and you had to daydream it. We went into the funeral homes. We picked caskets out for the competition. Def Jam, this summer, is gonna put the mixtape out as an EP. So I did about four new songs, put ’em with some of the original joints from the mixtape. We got more viral videos coming. We just gonna keep it going and let it end as the classic it is. A lot of people saying it’s a classic, one of the, if not the best mixtape of 2010. It’s crazy to me, because it started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work. Def Jam even came in and said, ‘Whoa, we gotta get a piece.’ It’s a good thing, man. ” ‘Body Ya’ definitely did its thing,” he added about one of the standout cuts from the mixtape. “It got added to Hot 97 and Power 105.1. ‘Body Ya’ grew its own legs. The mixtape itself grew its own legs. People are still asking about it. In this fast-paced music industry, music and mixtapes don’t have that much longevity. You might listen to it for a month, somebody else drop they joint and you listening to it the next month. But No Competition 2, people are still listening to it , still on Twitter talking about it. It’s crazy.” Loso is keeping his production to new guys on the EP. “I worked with Sonaro, a producer who just signed to Street Family. He did ‘Body Ya.’ I worked with the guy who did [Rick Ross’] ‘Blowin’ Money Fast,’ Lex Luger. He did a song for me called ‘Lights Out.’ The one with Sonaro is called ‘Body Count.’ I did one more with Ryan Leslie called ‘You Be Killin’ Them.’ It’s a little bit more for the females but keeping with the theme. I think when people hear these three joints, they gonna be like, ‘He’s still giving us great music, and it’s just a mixtape, just an EP.’ And from here, I’m working on the album.” Fab’s album is Loso’s Way 2. Pusha T Won’t Confirm Or Deny Signing To Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music

Clipse member’s The Fear of God, mixtape happens to be coming out the same day as the rest of ‘Ye’s roster. By Shaheem Reid Pusha T Photo: MTV News We’ve heard G.O.O.D. Music camp members Consequence, Kid Cudi and Big Sean talk about their family’s grand scheme of making September 14 “G.O.O.D. Music Day.” Kanye West and his three signees are all supposed to drop albums that day. But will there be another name added to the fold? The Clipse’s Pusha T is putting out his first solo mixtape, The Fear of God, that day as well, raising speculation that he’s doing it be as part of the Louis Vuitton Don’s roster? “That’s just a good day,” Pusha told MTV News Thursday night in New York at an EA Sports event to promote the game “Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.” “A great day for music, but it’s a ‘good’ day,” he said, slyly repeating the word. “I mean, you know. I been to Hawaii. Hawaii is a nice place. Good music is made down there, ya know. So, yeah, I was there. I can’t say too much about that. I think everybody’s gonna be in for a big surprise. A very big surprise.” Hawaii, of course, has been the primary location where Kanye has been making albums for the past several months with his roster of artists. When Pusha was asked straight up if he is signing to West, he answered with a grin, “Who’s to say, man? But the Pusha T solo album is definitely coming out.” His LP won’t be out until February at the earliest. Right now, the focus is on The Fear of God. The VA native is recording both projects simultaneously however. “I just feel like, you know, everybody’s waiting on it,” Pusha said about going solo. “I think it’s time to expand the Re-Up Gang brand. The only way to do that is expand the music. Make the music more diverse. They been seeing the Clipse for a little while. We got our own different perspectives. Myself and Malice. It’s good. It’s good for us to do this and show the world just how our minds work.” Asked to explain why the mixtape is called The Fear of God, he replied, “I feel like a lot of MCs are scared of it. A lot of MCs are scared of a solo project from an MC such as myself. I believe that. I was writing and I felt like, ‘Woooo. I’m gonna invoke the fear of God in these people.’ ” Push already put out two freestyles in the last few days, “Dearly Beloved” and “Bidding War.” “If you haven’t heard it, it’s called ‘Bidding War,’ ” he explained of the latter, where he raps over the beat of Jay Electronica’s “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” “Just a day. A day in the studio. It’s a lot going on in my mind right now. The music is flowing, the rhymes is flowing, and you’re gonna keep hearing from me. I’m feeling like a rapper right now. … I haven’t felt like that in a long time I my career. I’m feeling like that. That’s where I am. Let’s go play.” Do you think Pusha T fits in with the G.O.O.D. Music roster? Talk about it in the comments. Related Artists Pusha T Clipse

Jay Electronica Reveals How ‘Ghost Of Christopher Wallace’ Came To Life

‘I called Puff like, ‘I’mma do this,’ ‘ he tells Mixtape Daily of getting Diddy involved. By Shaheem Reid Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica said there’s no need for speculation: He is a part of the ever-expanding Dream Team super clique of hip-hop luminaries, which includes DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Busta Rhymes and Diddy. Jay Elect recently released footage to the Internet, in which we get to see him and Diddy recording the underground banger “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” “I’m blessed, man,” Jay told us in his hometown of New Orleans a couple of weeks ago. “I had records with Just Blaze, records with Puff. That record came from Twitter. I was on Twitter asking for beats through iChat. Quincy Tones [who produced ‘Wallace’] sent the beat. I was sitting on that one line: ‘The game ain’t been the same since B.I.G. died/ And Wu swarmed on New York from out that beehive.’ I had been sitting on that for two weeks. I didn’t do nothing with it. Then I took a swim on it. I called Puff like, ‘I’mma do this.’ He said, ‘Come to the studio right now. I need to get on that.’ It was a crazy night. A lot of energy.” As you’ve heard, Jay spits audio fury for a little over two minutes, then Diddy takes over the track, talking greasy for the remaining four and a half minutes. “I told him to,” Electronica explained. “That’s the Puff I love. That’s the Puff I wanna hear. I grew up listening to Biggie records and all these other records. I hear both sides of the coin; some people like it, some people don’t. He went long. We was supposed to go in the studio the next day with the engineer and only uses pieces. But I told him, ‘Leave it all the way in.’ I wanted it like that. A lot of times when I leave skits on there, it serves the same purpose. It’s keeping the atmosphere and the energy.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Jay Electronica Forges His Own Path As ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Candidate

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010’ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Electronica Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” Candidate: Jay Electronica Jay Electronica isn’t like most other artists, let alone rappers. The New Orleans MC marches to his own self-produced beat. Whether it’s live-tweeting the birth of his and Erykah Badu’s child or practically disrobing in concert to give his fans as much of himself as possible, he’s among the most unique stars to come along in some time. With the release of “Exhibit C” last year and “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace” earlier this year, Jay Elect’s buzz has never been bigger. But unlike most wordsmiths, he is in no rush to capitalize on the attention from fans and the music industry alike; he already has a scarce discography, with his best-known work being the mixtape Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge). “For the past few years, I been working on my own pace,” he told MTV News. “And not necessarily out of stubbornness, just out of — I been doing this for so long and trying to accomplish the thing for so long, that I finally found being my own self and working on my own time and being the most natural is the thing that yields the most results for me. Of course, I’d like to be able to tell you, ‘[My debut is] coming next week, two weeks from now,’ because we have projects. Me and Just Blaze have gangs of songs. Me and Nas speak on a regular basis; we’re working on music together. There’s a lot of things going on. But I don’t necessary have a calendar marked when things are coming, because I just kind of want to let it keep going the way it’s going, which has led me to this point.” Jay Electronica has the attention of Diddy, who rode shotgun on the rapper’s “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace,” and, of course, Just Blaze, who will helm the majority of Act III, his official debut. In addition to working on his solo effort, Jay Elect has his hand in more projects than President Obama. According to the nomadic rapper, projects with Nas , Lupe Fiasco and Mos Def are on the way. Whenever he gets around to his own material, though, the plan is to put out a sequel to his well-received mixtape — he rapped over music looped from the film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” on the set — and then his debut, which will be the third part of the trilogy. “It’s still Act II. It’s coming,” he promised. ” Act III , the official album, which ‘Exhibit A’ and ‘Exhibit C’ are a part of [as well as] ‘Dear Moleskin.’ You know, it’s coming real soon.” Jay and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Lee DeWyze Says There’s Still ‘A Lot To Prove’ On His New Album

‘I’m not here to change the music world,’ the ‘American Idol’ champ tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News It’s been exactly one week, but Lee DeWyze still can’t believe he won “American Idol.” The words seem strange even coming out of his mouth. “Yeah, it’s weird to say it, man,” he told MTV News on Wednesday (June 2). “I’m lovin’ it, to be sure, but man, it feels weird to say ‘ “American Idol” champion.’ ” To further illustrate that point, DeWyze said he can’t really remember how he felt — or what he did — when “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest announced that he’d been crowned the champ of season nine. It’s all just one rather glorious, delirious blur. “I was lost, dude. I didn’t know where I was! It was so crazy and intense, because everything we’ve done had led up to that point. And it was like, ‘And the winner is … ‘ And then there’s like the six-month pause, and then he says my name, and I was like, ‘Wow,’ ” he laughed. “It was just a big weight off my shoulders, and it felt amazing. I had it in my head what I would say or do if I won or if I lost, and all of that went out the window. … I’ve watched it back, and I try to remember what it was like. There’s some parts I don’t really remember. I remember being up there, and then the next thing you know, I was in the room with the press. It was just really fast and nonstop.” And things haven’t really let up since then. There has been the constant promotional cycle that comes with winning “Idol” — the performances and the appearances on TV shows — and then the upcoming American Idols Live! Tour. DeWyze doesn’t mind all the fuss that comes with winning the show (“Why would I complain about any of it?” he laughed), but more than anything, he’s really looking forward to getting into a recording studio to begin work on his album — which he’ll do whenever he has a free moment in between tour stops. “The studio and the stage are obviously two completely different things, so it’s going to be interesting to see how going from the live performances to the recording and back is going to pan out, but I’m really looking forward to it, because I’m going to have a lot of say in it,” he said. “I think that’s another misconception about ‘American Idol,’ is that once you go on there, you’re forced to do this or forced to wear that … we’re not. We get a lot of freedom and a lot of say. So I’m just looking forward to making a record I can be proud of.” What will that record sound like? Well, it’s still early, but DeWyze said fans can expect to hear some different sides of him — the kind of stuff he didn’t really get to show off on “Idol.” Though he knows winning the show only raises expectations, he’s ready and willing to take on the task at hand and whatever tasks come after that. “I’m sure there’s going to be elements of pop somewhere in there, there always is, and elements of rock and a folky feel. I’m not trying to go out there and do something that’s never been done. It’s all been done … and I think now, it’s more or less an opportunity for people to show who they are through their music,” he said. “I’m not here to change the music world, but I’m definitely here to show what I can do and express myself through my music. So to do that’s going to be cool, and to prove myself. Because I don’t feel that, just because I won ‘American Idol,’ that, you know, now I’ve made it. There’s a lot to prove still. There’s an album to put out, and I’m looking forward to it. It’s all about the process for me, you know? Just making the album, touring, doing all that stuff and seeing where I’m at in a year from now.” Where do you think Lee will be a year from now? Let us know in the comments!
