The Beef Between The NBA & China, Explained

Source: HECTOR RETAMAL / Getty The NBA was shoring up what looked to be a fruitful union with China, but now tension between the sports league and the communist nation looks to be growing by the day. After Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of Hong Kong protestors, he set off a flurry of debate regarding free speech and the price of going into business with an entity known for its rigidness. To explain the rift in full, back on October 4, Daryl Morey tweeted out support of the Hong Kong protestors who are combating an extradition bill and other restrictions that infringe on the civil rights of those living in the semi-autonomous region. This tweet came just ahead of the Los Angles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets on the schedule to play in China this week. NBA commissioner Adami Silver offered not one, but two statements to satisfy China’s concerns around Morey’s tweet. Silver did say that he would not find Morey in contempt and won’t limit free speech in the league. Morey’s tweet, which has since been deleted, angered Chinese leaders to the point of upending a potential windfall of money. China’s state-run CCTV has since suspended all NBA pre-season games after issuing a statement. “We’ve noticed NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s response to the inappropriate remarks by Houston Rockets GM Morey. We are strongly unsatisfied and opposed to Adam Silver’s claim of supporting Morey’s rights of having freedom of speech,” CCTV5, a sports channel, said Tuesday on its social media page. “We think any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are outside the category of freedom of speech.” The Rockets were one of the more popular teams in China, due in part to the team drafting now-retired star Yao Ming number one overall in 2002. Yao, now the chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, has not made any public comments about the rift despite his history with the Rockets and the NBA. The fallout from Morey’s tweet has been substantial, with community events, ticket sales getting halted, and Chinese celebrities shouting down the Rockets and the NBA in the process. The league, which enjoys a strong following due to the aforementioned Yao’s time with Houston, also has a $1.5 billion deal to stream games with the Tencent media company, with the service blacklisting Rockets games. Further, the CBA is no longer collaborating with the Houston Rockets. Despite the apologies from Silver and from Rockets superstar James Harden, China does not appear satisfied with the team’s effort for repairing the issue. Several Chinese fans were also ousted from pre-season games featuring the Washington Wizards and the Philadelphia 76ers for holding fans that read “Free Hong Kong.” Additionally, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has urged the NBA to pull out of China, including the hosting of a training facility in Xinjiang, where it is thought that around a million Chinese minorities, the Turkic Uyghurs, are being held in so-called “re-education camps.” To underscore the seriousness of things, a CNN reporter attempted to ask Rockets players James Harden and Russell Westbrook if they will continue speaking out on social issues, most especially in the light of Morey’s Hong Kong utterance. Let’s get ready to rumble! Timothée Chalamet stars in a new battle for the crown movie called The King that is hitting Netflix later this month. Based on the Shakespeare play we see Timothée as King Henry V bicker and combat with his father for making England fight his unjust battles only to reluctantly take the crown once his father becomes ill. After that, a series of events happen that send the new King back to the battlefield to fight for his life. I had the opportunity to fly to New York City to sit down with the Oscar-nominated actor and the film’s director David Michôd to talk about The King. Chalamet broke down his process for rehearsing his loud monologues. “I just try to get the words down. I think it’s the kind of thing on the day, but I’m lucky enough to have done a lot of theater. I think I knew to do that speech in a hotel room but it was never going to be an authentic experience of the day of having 300 guys in front of you and trying to rile them up.” Timothee goes on to explain that he never yelled his dramatic war cry monologue prior to filming the scene. Then he shares a funny story about how all the extras in that scene didn’t understand English so they had no clue what he was actually saying. David who not only directed this film but also co-wrote it, broke down how they used a more modern language than the Shakespeare play while still keeping stellar wordplay for the actors, but the highlight of the entire interview was hearing Timothée Chalamet break down New York slang in order to describe The King on Netflix.

He was a key witness in the Amber Guyger murder trial that ended last week. The news came from social media posts by Lee Merritt, the lawyer who represented the Jean family:  “Joshua Brown, the next door neighbor of #BothamJean was killed last night after being shot several times by an unknown assailant. Local media have began reporting on the shooting but have not confirmed Brown’s identity,” Merritt wrote on Facebook. “[…] An ADA has confirmed that it was in fact Brown who was killed although they have yet to identify a suspect or motive for the shooting. The case is now in the hands of the Dallas Police Department.”   View this post on Instagram Joshua Brown, the next door neighbor of #BothamJean was killed last night after being shot several times by an unknown assailant. Local media has reported on the shooting but have not confirmed Brown’s identity. Because, Brown worked closely with prosecutors just a week ago to ensure Amber Guyger was properly convicted in the murder trial, the DA’s office has fairly direct contact with Brown and his family. An ADA has confirmed that it was in fact Brown who was killed although they have yet to identify a suspect or motive for the shooting. The case is now in the hands of the Dallas Police Department. Brown’s testimony stood out as a fact witness who was approaching his apartment directly across from Botham Jean’s apartment when shots rang out. Brown was still visibly shaken up from the incident when he took the stand to testify on behalf of the prosecution. His murder underscores the reality of the black experience in America. A former athlete turned entrepreneur— Brown lived in constant fear that he could be the next victim of gun violence, either state sanctioned or otherwise. We have more work to do deal with the constant threats to our community both from within and without. Brown deserves the same justice he sought to ensure the Jean family. The Dallas County criminal justice system must mobilized to identify his killer and see that he is held accountable for this murder. A post shared by S. Unconfirmed rumors spread that Brown was shot in the mouth, but the Dallas News has since confirmed that he was shot in the back and thigh. This story is still developing…

As previously reported Stacey was taken into custody this week following a physical fight with her husband Jeffrey Marty. What REALLY got people talking, however, was the public arrest record that went viral this week showing Stacey’s race marked as W a.k.a WHITE. Source: Ethan Miller / Getty MGM Resorts Settle Nearly $800 Million In Lawsuits From Las Vegas Shooting The Mandalay Bay was the site of the 2017 mass shooting that became the deadliest in modern United States history. 58 people were killed and hundreds of others were injured during a concert that boasted 22,000 in attendance. As a result, the MGM was sued, for a lot of money by multiple people. Today, the AP reported that those lawsuits have been settled by MGM Resorts International to the tune of, wait for it, up to $800 million. Insurance will pay $735 million and the company might kick in more depending on how many people participate. The suits claim that the hotel not only failed to protect concertgoers at the Mandalay Bay, they also failed to keep the shooter from building a stockpile of weapons and ammunition inside his hotel room for days and days. Las Vegas law firm Eglet Adams represents almost 2,500 plaintiffs. “Today’s agreement marks a milestone in the recovery process for the victims of the horrifying events of 1 October,” Robert Eglet, a lead plaintiffs’ counsel, said in the statement. “While nothing will be able to bring back the lives lost or undo the horrors so many suffered on that day, this settlement will provide fair compensation for thousands of victims and their families.” Victims and their families exploded in righteous indignation last year when MGM filed 1,900 lawsuits stating that they had no liability in the shooting under a federal 9/11-related protections bill. Source: SOPA Images / Getty Bernie Sanders Has Heart Surgery To Circumvent Artery Blockage Bernie Sanders had to sit it on down after undergoing heart surgery after the sensation of what his aides describe as “chest discomfort” during a campaign event last night. According to Politico , Sanders was taken to the hospital where doctors diagnosed a blockage in one of his arteries and immediately took the Presidential hopeful into surgery to install two stents. “Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days,” senior adviser Jeff Weaver said in a statement Wednesday. “We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.” Bernie has been crisscrossing the nation speaking to people and doing his damnedest to drum up excitement for the upcoming 2020 election. But the 78-year-old is still 78-years-old and his system ain’t quite build the way it used to be. Ethan Weiss, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, said the stent procedure Sanders underwent typically is “not anything I would get too excited about,” calling it “mostly a nuisance.” Weiss, who did not diagnose Sanders, added, “Unless I’m missing something dramatic, he should be in the hospital one or two days, and he should be fine.” It will be interesting to watch how this procedure will affect Senator Sanders’ campaign if at all. In 2016 much was made of Hillary Clinton’s brief health scare and McDonald’s-lovin’ Donald Trump’s slightly suspect clean bill of health. Will the Bernie Bros be inclined to abandon their man if they fear that he may not be physically up to the task?

The 6th Grader That Claimed White Students Cut Off Her Dreads Admits To Making It Up

  A 12-year-old Virginia girl that accused her white classmates of holding her down and cutting out some of her dreads has admitted that she made the story up. The Immanuel Christian School is the same private school in Virginia where the vice president’s wife was a part-time teacher, the New York Times noted . According to NBC 4 Washington , Amira Allen’s parents have apologized for their daughter’s behavior, adding that she will also be seeking counseling. “To those young boys and their parents, we sincerely apologize for the pain and anxiety these allegations have caused,” the family said in a statement, adding, “To the administrators and families of Immanuel Christian School, we are sorry for the damage this incident has done to trust within the school family and the undue scorn it has brought to the school.” Last week the story made headlines when Allen said that she was ambushed by her white classmates her on the playground last week and used scissors to cut off some of her dreadlocks while calling her “nappy” and “ugly.” “They kept laughing and calling me names,” Amari told  CBS affiliate WUSA-TV , tearing up. “They called me ‘ugly,’ said, ‘I shouldn’t have been born.’ They called me ‘an attention-seeker.’” Camera footage retrieved showed that the accused were somewhere else during the time of the alleged attack. However, the Allen family lawyer still maintains that the girl isn’t lying about being bullied. Stephen Danish, the head of the school told Essence that they plan on using this incident as a lesson in healing. “We’re grateful to the Fairfax County Police Department for their diligent work to investigate these allegations,” Danish said in the statement. “While we are relieved to hear the truth and bring the events of the past few days to a close, we also feel tremendous pain for the victims and the hurt on both sides of this conflict. We recognize that we now enter what will be a long season of healing.” “This ordeal has revealed that we as a school family are not immune from the effects of deep racial wounds in our society. We view this incident as an opportunity to be part of a learning and healing process, and we will continue to support the students and families involved,” the statement added. It’s unclear what Allen’s punishment, if any, will be. Farrah Abraham Accused of Child Abuse After Posting Shocking Video of Daughter Sophia

Folks, it's another new low for Farrah Abraham! For reasons that aren't entirely clear, Abraham was in attendance at the 2019 Emmys on Sunday night — and while she didn't drag her 10-year-old daughter along as a red carpet prop like she usually does, she still took advantage of the opportunity to further traumatize poor Sophia. Tik Tok was briefly mentioned during the ceremony, so Farrah decided it would be a perfect time to use the app to post a wildly inappropriate video starring her unfortunate offspring. It was disgusting, there's no doubt about that — but did it cross the line into child abuse? That's what some of Abraham's followers are currently arguing in the comments. Working the Circuit For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, Farrah and Sophia have been invited to a LOT of A-list events in recent weeks. 2. But the crowning event on Farrah’s recently jam-packed social calendar had to be the 2019 Emmy Awards, which were held in Los Angeles Sunday night. 5. Not at the Cool Kids’ Table As evidenced by this hilariously sad collage she posted on Instagram, Farrah didn’t get close to many stars. In fact, it looked as though she walked an entirely different red carpet. 6.
