Turkish girl buried alive for talking to boys

The body of a 16-year-old girl police say was buried alive by relatives in an “honor” killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys has been discovered in Kahta, Turkey. Turkish police discovered the body after acting on an anonymous tip. The tipster told police that the girl was killed after a family council meeting, and had been buried under a chicken pen

Study shows hope for type of blindness

A small but provocative study showed that a form of gene therapy significantly improved the vision of patients left legally blind by a rare genetic eye disease. The benefit was especially striking among children. Researchers said the findings amount to an important advance toward medicine's ambitious but generally unrealized dream of replacing disease-causing mutant or missing genes with normal DNA to treat and cure debilitating illnesses In the study, 12 patients, including four children between ages 8 and 11 years old, underwent a surgical procedure in which a gene that makes a protein critical to vision function was injected into one eye

Atheists in America are the most widely mistrusted group

In a recent article published in the American Sociological Review, Penny Edgell, Joseph Gerteis, and Douglas Hartmann reported their findings, on how atheists are perceived, based on data from a national survey. To the question, “This group does not at all agree with my vision of American society,” By far, the most “detested” group were the atheists. To the question, “I would disapprove if my child wanted to marry a member of this group,” Again, the least desired group were the atheists

Boy captive two years in secret room by mother avoiding custody change

Missing child Richard Chekevdia, 6, was freed Friday from a captivity as restricted as recently found Jaycee Lee Dugard. Chekevdia didn't have to endure rape like Dugard, 29, did by kidnappers Phillip and Nancy Garrido who took her off a South Lake Tahoe street 18-years-ago.

Video gamers ‘older than thought’

The average age of an adult video game player is 35 – higher than previously thought, a US study suggests. A team from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also found gamers were less healthy, fatter, and more depressed than non-gamers. Researchers from the government agency analysed data from 500 adults aged 19 to 90 in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington state.
