‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ TV Clip: Kirk Takes Center Stage

When the Star Trek Into Darkness   marketing campaign began in earnest late last year with a much-discussed teaser trailer, the debate was all about the villain:   Benedict Cumberbatch’s icy voiceover and acrobatic evildoing led to lots of theorizing that his mysterious character was Khan , Robert April and other Star Trek canon creeps . Four months later, with the release of the J.J. Abrams -directed film a little over a month away, a TV clip that debuted on Sunday continued to shift the spotlight from bad guy to good:  Captain James T. Kirk.   Actually, the transition began with the Star Trek Into Darkness international trailer that hit the web in late March. Although Cumberbatch’s character is prominent (and vicious) in the clip, Chris Pine’s Kirk emerges as the guy who’s going to break a lot of rules and sacrifice however many Starship Enterprise extras he needs to top Benny’s reign of terror. You can watch the transition via the embeds below: First Teaser Trailer Star Trek International Trailer The latest TV Clip: The key dialogue in that last clip begins with Kirk’s superior officer Christopher Pike ( Bruce Greenwood )  telling him: “Do you have any idea what a pain in the ass you are?”  then, later, adding: “But there’s greatness in you, Jim.” Okay, so it’s no surprise that the central conflict of STID is Kirk vs. Cumberbatch. Rather, it’s…marketing. As the clock ticks down to STID ‘s release date, it’s a way of preparing moviegoers who aren’t Star Trek geeks for what to expect at their local cineplex come May 16. What remains to be seen is whether future clips will put the emphasis on any other supporting characters, such as Spock , in the weeks to come. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter. WATCH: ‘Within The Woods’, Sam Raimi’s 1979 ‘Evil Dead’ Prototype

With Fede Alvarez’s   remake of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead about to hit theaters on Friday, it’s a good time to take the Hot Tub Time Machine back to 1979 when rotary dial phones were still common and the Oz The Great and Powerful director was just an aspiring filmmaker with an idea for a bloody and original horror film. Movies.com has unearthed Within The Woods &not to be confused with Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods — the 30-minute proof-of-concept short that Raimi used to raise money to produce his 1981 horror classic,  The Evil Dead.  Before you click play, make sure you’re in a receptive and patient mood. This clip looks like it was bootlegged from a pre-cable TV tuned in to a particularly weak UHF station. (Remember those?) But if you can get in the right frame of mind to watch it, it’s pretty cool to see Bruce Campbell looking bespectacled and nerdy (as opposed to the Vegas Elvis impersonator he’s become) and to witness Raimi’s early promise as a filmmaker. The scene where heroine Ellen Sandweiss uses Campbell’s severed hand, which holds a knife, to dispatch him is a nice touch, although the scene where she repeatedly slams a door on a friend who’s she’s accidentally stabbed veers into unintentional comedy.  (By the way, Sandweiss appeared as a quadling in Oz .) What do you think of the movie? Better yet, what do you think of the rotary-dial phone that appears near the end.  Mwa-ha-ha-ha! [ Movieweb via Movies.com ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . WATCH: Iron Man Flips Out In Marvel Phase 2 Preview

A few weeks ago I wrote about the importance of Robert Downey Jr. to the future phases of Marvel’s superhero film rollout. With Tuesday’s release of the limited edition Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers  Assembled Blu-ray box set comes some corroboration, plus a cool scene of Iron Man doing some acrobatic hot-dogging just to put on his mask.  It’s the highlight of this brief — and not exactly revelatory — Phase 2 preview clip that comes with the collection . Then again, with the release of Iron Man 3 just a little over a month away, why give away the store? Iron Man Flips Out Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . Follow Movieline on  Twitter .

WATCH: ‘The Desolation Of Smaug’ Q&A − Stephen Colbert Geeks Out On ‘Hobbit’ Director Peter Jackson

You know you’re in Hobbit -land when Peter Jackson turns a mind-numbing question from Stephen Colbert  about the Elves of Mirkwood into an observation about whether the coffee mugs on The Colbert Report are sanitary. Just in time for April Fool’s Day, Colbert makes the appearance at the 1:28 mark in this excerpt of a Q&A that Jackson conducted with fans who bought the Blu-Ray version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey   last week. The clip also includes a first look at the second film in Jackson’s planned trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ,  but the hight point is Colbert’s slightly unhinged appearance.  If he is not the number-one Tolkien geek on this planet, then he sure has me fooled. Jackson demonstrates that he’ s capable of being funny, too, and responds to Colbert’s multi-part question with a simple “yes,” before raising his own geeky question about The Colbert Report coffee mug that he used on his last appearance. The moral of the story:  If you appear on The Colbert Report , bring your own mug. WATCH: With ‘Evil Dead’ & ‘Trance’ Opening, It’s Going To Be A Gory Weekend At The Movies

So, you think you want to see Evil Dead but you’re not sure whether you’ve got the stomach for it?  Here’s one way of gauging your gore threshold. Check out this red band clip of the cheek-cutting scene from Fede Alvarez’s remake of Sam Raimi’s horror classic.  Intense stuff, although not without humor: The moment where Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) slips on the flap of cheek that Mia (Jane Levy) has removed from her cheek is a great update on the classic banana-peel gag. Evil Dead :  Cheeky Gore How did you do?  If you couldn’t get through it without throwing up in your mouth, then you should probably check out something else at your local cineplex.  How about Danny Boyle’s Trance ?  Oh wait, that film features a fingernail-removal scene and a moment where Vincent Cassel gets the top of his head blown off but continues talking so that an important plot point can be established. Come to think of it, that’s kind of funny, too. Trance :  Half A Head Is Better Than No Head At All Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . Follow Movieline on  Twitter .

WATCH: Bruce Willis Versus The World In ‘Everybody Wants To Kill Bruce’

Is Bruce Willis the most hunted man in action movie history?  Editor Pierre-Alexandre Chauvat and sound mixer Sylvain Denis sure make a strong case for it in this epic supercut.   Everybody Wants to Kill Bruce mixes together scenes from Willis’ oeuvre   and bad-guy moments that include Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight and Tom Cruise’s  gray-haired hitman from Collateral.  If you ask me, there is one missed opportunity here: When Willis is crawling around in the ducts, he should have encountered the Alien from Ridley Scott’s original. Remember, when poor Tom Skerritt went looking for the creature in the ventilation shafts and met an untimely end?  I would have loved that to see that. Perhaps there are other scenes you would have liked to see included?  Leave them in the comments. [ Movies.com  via Slashfilm.com ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . WATCH: The Mandarin Isn’t Talking Funny Anymore

There’s yet another Iron Man 3 TV spot making the rounds, and, like the international TV spot I wrote about on Monday, it leaves the distinct impression that Ben Kingsley has dialed back the affected voice he was using in his portrayal of the Mandarin . How Kingsley Dialed Back The Mandarin’s Vocal Acrobatics In this clip, Kingsley, in voiceover, uses his signature line, “You’ll never see me coming,” but this time he doesn’t lead-foot the l’s and r’s.  Instead, he breaks up the sentence with dramatic pauses, so he sounds appropriately dangerous as opposed to dangerous and destined to be a recurring Saturday Night Live character.  Check out the second clip for Kingsley’s original reading of the line. A Disney spokeswoman still hasn’t gotten back to me on whether a conscious decision was made to change the downplay the Mandarin’s vocal acrobatics. If that ever happens, I’ll update. Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige Plays Superhero Shrink For Tony Stark:  In other Iron Man 3 news, Marvel Studios Production President Kevin Feige plays superhero shrink in an “Under The Armor” interview at Marvel.com and sheds some light on Tony Stark’s mindset going into the movie.  Noting that this latest installment in the Iron Man saga takes place after the events of The Avengers Feige says: “Not only did he encounter all of those crazy characters with hammers and capes and shields and gamma-irradiated strength, but a portal to another world opened above his head. Tony Stark is a very scientifically minded guy who thought he was at the cutting edge of science, and suddenly learned in those brief moments at the end of “Marvel’s The Avengers,” that there is an infinite amount that he doesn’t know. I think that made him feel small in a certain way and I think even encountering those other super heroes in “Marvel’s The Avengers” made him feel like he was not the most powerful person in the world, which I think Tony likes to feel like he is. He may be the smartest person in the world, but not necessarily the most powerful. So when we meet him at the beginning of “Iron Man 3,” he’s using the suit as a shell almost. It is a shell to shield himself from all of this new information, this new influx of reality that is crashing around him. At the same time, as tends to happen in good movies, another villain arises. And suddenly, when he’s sort of at a state where he’d much rather stay in his lab and work on his suits, something happens that forces him to get out of his house, to get out of his lab and even in some cases, get out of the suit, to confront this new evil.” More on Iron Man 3 & the Mandarin:  WATCH: Pepper Dons Armor & The Mandarin Sheds Weird Dialect In International ‘Iron Man 3’ Clip Marvel Studios Says Iron Man 3 Villain The Mandarin Isn’t Chinese, He’s International ‘Iron Man 3’ Director Spills On The Mandarin & He Sounds Like….Mike Ovitz? WATCH: ‘The Wolverine’ Promotional Campaign Designed For The ADD Crowd

It’s a big week for Marvel marketing, what with the promotional campaigns for Iron Man 3 and The Wolverine seeing a lot of action. The big difference is that the Wolvie campaign appears geared to the ADD crowd. On Monday, I wrote about the six-second “tweaser”  that the movie’s director James Mangold posted on Twitter. Well, steel your patience, because MTV has now posted an exclusive, marathon 20-second preview trailer on its site in advance of Wednesday’s release of a presumably longer trailer for The Wolverine . It would take me much longer to describe it than for you to watch it, so here you go: Like that early Iron Man 3 trailer in which Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin declared “You’lllll neverrrr see me coming” in that weird dialect, this trailer ends with a similarly ominous line spoken memorably. Is that one of the basic tenets of Marvel trailers 101 or something? New Posters For ‘The Wolverine’ Show A Jacked Jackman − But Little Artistic Spark

Some new posters and images from The Wolverine   have hit the web. If only they were as stunning as the original black-and-white Japanese brush style teaser that BLT Communications designed. The new one-sheets are designed to appeal to ab lovers more than art lovers and feature images of a shirtless Hugh Jackman and his adamantium claws.  Hoo-ah! As Al Pacino might say.  EW.com has also posted a gallery of exclusive stills from the movie, which is set in Japan.  The first features Jackman and actress Tao Okamoto as Mariko, who Wolverine is protecting from the Yakuza.  Next up, looking a bit like Poison Ivy is Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper, a super villain who likes to work with toxins and is immune to them. The third image features Rila Fukushima as the formidable Yukio. Jackman tells EW.com that Wolverine’s inability to die is a theme that resounds throughout the film. “He realizes everyone he loves dies, and his whole life is full of pain,” says Jackman. ”So it’s better that he just escapes. He can’t die really. He just wants to get away from everything.” You can check out the rest of EW’s exclusive shots here . [ EW ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter. Follow Movieline on  Twitter.
