Exclusive: Rebels Turn the Tables in Action-Filled Clip from Warriors of the Rainbow, AKA Taiwan’s Braveheart

In select theaters Friday is Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale , the epic historical retelling of a little-known uprising in 1930s Taiwan in which the indigenous Seediq people battled Japanese forces against all odds, suffering great losses but turning the tables on familiar ground — in the mountains. After the jump, watch Movieline’s exclusive action-packed clip from the Oscar shortlist entry (dubbed the Taiwanese Braveheart ) in which the Seediq warriors lure their enemies into familiar terrain and launch a full-scale ambush. With beehives! Directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Wei Te-Sheng ( Cape No. 7 ) and produced by John Woo (!), Warriors of the Rainbow stars Lin Ching-Tai, Umin Boya and Battle Royale ‘s Masanobu Andō and is in limited release today. More info here . Official synopsis: Wei Te-sheng’s epic film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale reclaims an extraordinary episode from 20th-century history, which is little known, even in Taiwan. Between 1895 and 1945, the island was a Japanese colony inhabited not only by the majority (Han Chinese Immigrants) but also by the remnants of the aboriginal tribes who first settled the mountainous land. In 1930 Mouna Rudo, the leader of the Seediq tribe settled on and around Mount Chilai, forged a coalition with other Seediq tribal leaders and plotted a rebellion against their Japanese colonial masters. It was to begin at a sports day meeting where the assembled tribesmen were to attach and kill the Japanese officials and would then broaden to sieges on police stations and local government offices in the region. The initial uprising took the Japanese by surprise and was almost entirely successful. But the Japanese soon sent in their army to crush the rebellion, using aircraft and poison gas.

Elisabetta Canalis on George Clooney Split: A Personal Failure

Elisabetta Canalis has moved on from George Clooney to Valentin Chmerkovskiy. Sort of. The Italian model, who split from the Oscar-winning hunk in June , is a contestant on this season of Dancing with the Stars and is paired up with one of the show’s new professionals. But before she Waltzes into America’s living room, Canalis is opening up about Clooney. “At the end of the day I have always seen the end of my relationships as a personal failure,” Canalis tells Italian magazine Chi . “There is nothing ever pretty is saying goodbye.” Canalis adds that she’s typically a “tomboy,” but admits to being a “doormat when it comes to love,” adding: “I’m looking for men who can give me security.” But she rarely finds it. In what can only be interpreted as a diss to the actor, Elisabetta says she has “always seen cold and controlled men as the right ones for me. You have to accept that Prince Charming who is coming to save you is not going to happen – it works against you.” The beauty, who fully supports Chaz Bono , concludes that she remains hopeful. “In the past I would self destruct when it came to love – I was immature, throwing myself into things but now times have changed, I want a relationship where you understand the other person.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Details Disclosed in Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva Custody Resolution

It really is all over between Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva. The epic, disturbing feud – which included taped rants , allegations of abuse, blackmail and other sordid deeds – came to an end in Los Angeles Superior Court today. It was decreed that Gibson must pay his former lover $750,000 over the next five years. Among other terms: Grigorieva will continue to reside in a home owned by the actor in California. Gibson will then sell the estate when daughter Lucia turns 18 and turn all profits over to a trust in her name. The parties will split custody 50/50. Neither side is permitted to discuss the the other, or the relationship, in public. Judge Peter D. Lichtman specified that Oksana could not write a book about Gibson. In 2010, Oksana actually turned down a deal that would have given her $15 million . She thought she could earn more from the Oscar winner. She turned out to be very, very, very, very wrong.

‘I Don’t Know What the Hell I’m Doing,’ and 8 Other Epiphanies From Sir Anthony Hopkins

Holding court for an assembly of journalists yesterday in Los Angeles, Sir Anthony Hopkins gamely talked up his upcoming thriller The Rite , in which he plays a seasoned Jesuit exorcist mentoring a skeptical seminary student (newcomer Colin O’D onoghue) in Rome. Sitting across from the Oscar-winning actor, one thing was clear: At 73, Sir Anthony has, to borrow from Plato, achieved a great sense of calm and freedom. Like, the freedom to do whatever the hell he wants, whether it’s starring last year in Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger , getting hairy in the uber flop The Wolfman , making a special appearance in low-budget B-movies about female cage fighters , or playing a Norse god in this summer’s big-budget Marvel adaptation Thor .
