In case you haven’t heard, Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders . And while this has created an awkward, sad situation in the couple’s personal life – Will they stay together? Will Tom Cruise sets his sights on a now-single Stewart? – it’s also led to speculation on the professional front. Might the box office haul of Breaking Dawn Part 2 suffer as a result of Stewart’s actions?
It was a one-time mistake . That’s the line Kristen Stewart is hoping will keep Robert Pattinson from leaving her, although early indications don’t bode very well for the future of Robsten . But is that claim even valid? Did Stewart really just make out with Rupert Sanders for a few fleeting moments? Or was this affair far more drawn out and calculating? At least Fred Willard is able to laugh at himself. Appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday, a week after being arrested for allegedly having his pants down inside an adult movie theater in Los Angeles, the veteran comedian kicked off his interview with one question for the host: “What do you want to talk about first?” From there, the actor made a few more jokes (“It’s the last time I’m gonna listen to my wife when she says, ‘Why don’t you go out and see a movie?’”) before admitting he did stop by an “exotic” looking theater and it felt like “a trip down Alice in Wonderland and down the rabbit hole,” where he was the “only awake and sober and conscious” person in the theater. But seriously, folks. “It’s very embarrassing,” Willard said. “It’s embarrassing as hell! But let me say this: nothing happened. I did nothing wrong, everything’s being sorted out as we speak.” The actor has been fired from his gig at PBS, but is unlikely to face prosecution “I have great respect for the authorities,” Willard added. “I mean, when we need a policeman, God bless ‘em, they’re there. But, if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, everything seems suspicious. “But it’s very embarrassing. Very painful. And I’m trying to laugh it off. Kristen Stewart and Rupert Sanders made it to first base, that much cannot be denied. Each has apologized for his/her actions and photos of the actress and director make it clear they were engaged in a game of tonsil hockey. But an exclusive Gossip Cop report backs up Stewart’s labeling of her dalliance as a ” momentary indiscretion ,” stating the star and her Snow White and the Huntsman director only “kissed passionately.” They NEVER HAD SEX, a source tells the site. This clearly doesn’t get either completely off the hook. But will the information be enough for fans to ease up a bit on Kristen? Will it mean Sanders remains with his wife and two children? And, most importantly to Twihards, will it cause Robert Pattinson to turn around and move back in?
I should admit up front that I’ve long been skeptical of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson ‘s off-screen romance. They make a beautiful couple, as the Twilight franchise box-office numbers demonstrate, but, if you ask me, their real-life relationship has always had an odor of Hollywood hoodoo — the inspired idea of some marketing or public-relations executive who saw a way to keep fan interest in the blockbuster saga alive between movies. Then again, a slew of respectable publications and websites are telling me it’s real, and so who am I to disagree? People.com reported today , for instance, that a “heartbroken and angry” Pattinson had moved out of the Los Angeles home that he shared with Stewart, despite her head-turning public apology for cheating on him by making out in a car with married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders . The whole episode and the media frenzy it has provoked brings out the armchair analyst in me (I do have a Bachelors in psychology, by the way) and, whether I look at this from the perspective of a couples counselor or a cultural critic, I can’t help but think that Stewart — subconsciously or consciously — is telling us that she doesn’t want us to think of her as Bella anymore. Although she seems to have become better adjusted to being in the spotlight recently, Stewart has never appeared comfortable with the insane kind of fame that the Twilight movies brought her. (Indeed, the last time she had to issue an apology was when she compared the paparazzi’s photographing of her to being raped.) I’ve never met her, but I wonder if that discomfort has to do with her self-image as an actress instead of teen idol movie star. Stewart’s excellent performances in Into the Wild and the extremely underrated Adventureland tell me that she has Oscar potential. (I also thought she did Joan Jett justice in The Runaways .) With the right roles, she could be her generation’s Jodie Foster . But at the moment, she’s got to feel more like Mark Hamill. Stewart’s headlines-making cheating episode reminds me of the furor that erupted in 2008 when Vanity Fair published a tastefully topless photo of Miley Cyrus in the magazine. Like Stewart, Cyrus apologized for the incident saying she was “embarrassed” by the photo. But the episode was really a smart bit of positioning on Cyrus’ part: the image sent the message that Cyrus was leaving the adolescent world of Hannah Montana behind. Intentionally or impulsively, Stewart has sent a similar message to the millions of Twi-hards out their who breathlessly monitor her every move. Bella, and maybe Robsten too are history. As one friend told People: “I’m not sure they’ll be able to recover from this.” I bet that friend is right. Sometimes you have to break a few hearts to get what you want. Audiences headed out to theaters to see a foul-mouthed Teddy Bear and some hot man flesh over the weekend. Universal’s Ted grossed over $54.1 million over the Friday through Sunday, while Warner Bros.’ Magic Mike came in at just over $39.15 million. The two studio newcomers topped the overall box office for the weekend, while last week’s newcomer animation Brave held the third spot. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection landed in fourth place. 1. Ted Gross: $54,107,495 (New) S creens: 3,239 (PSA: $16,705) Week: 1 Thunder Buddies turned out in solid numbers to see Ted in figures that beat expectations. World of mouth lent the title some push for the Seth MacFarlane-directed film starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. The title even earned the distinction of being the biggest R-rated non-sequel comedy. For comparison sake, The Hangover took in just under $45 million in its roll out. 2. Magic Mike Gross: $39,155,000 (New) Screens: 2,930 (PSA: $13,363) Week: 1 The roll out of the Steven Soderbergh-directed feature starring Channing Tatum had terrific marketing and its debut is the best of the director’s career. In 2004, Ocean’s Twelve opened with $39,153,380. And with a production budget that was only $7 million, the title is assured a nice showing for its efforts. Opening numbers with Channing Tatum in the cast include The Vow ($41.2 million in February) and 21 Jump Street ($36.3 million in March). 3. Brave (3-D animation) Gross: $34,011,000 ($131,685,000) Screens: 4,164 (PSA: $8,168) Week: 2 (Change: – 49%) The Disney feature’s global cume is $158.5 million. 4. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection Gross: $26,350,000 (New) Screens: 2,161 (PSA: $12,193) Week: 1 This is the fourth best debut for Tyler Perry. The fan base turned out along with crossover audiences in a marketplace that had tough competition. 5. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (3-D animation) Gross: $11,815,000 ($180,012,000) Screens: 3,715 (PSA: $3,180) Week: 4 (Change: – 40%) 6. Kristen Stewart Is The Highest Paid Actress In Hollywood At 22, Kristin Stewart has surpassed the likes of Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz and a host of her other Hollyweird veteran peers to take the top spot on Forbes’ highest paid actress list. It’s no surprise that the success of the Twilight movies has made Kristen Stewart a pretty penny, but is she Hollywood’s biggest salaried star? That’s the word from Forbes, which ranked her at the top of its annual list of highest-paid actresses with a whopping $34.5 million in earnings over the past year—just barely surpassing Cameron Diaz who came in second with a $34 million haul. And Breaking Dawn Part 2 isn’t even out yet! So who knows what Bella Swan’s alter-ego will collect once box-office returns come in for the mega-franchise’s fourth and final film. Between May 2011 and May 2012, Stewart was paid $12.5 million for each Breaking Dawn entry along with a share of the backend.
