Image via Focus on Sport/Getty Manute Bol Wasn’t The Age He Claimed To Be In the past we’ve seen athletes who have lied about their age , but that seems to mostly happen in little league sports where some overly ambitious coach is thirsty to have a star player on his team. We’ve never heard of anything like this. According to a report on ZAGSBLOG , the college scout, Kevin Mackey, who brought the late Manute Bol to the United States to play basketball literally made up the 7’7″ African’s age. “I gave him his birthday because they didn’t know how old he was,” Mackey, now a scout with the Indiana Pacers, told ZAGSBLOG. Mackey goes on to say: “Every athletic door is open at 19, every athletic door is closed when you’re 35,” said Mackey, 71. “He was probably 40, 50 years old when he was playing in the NBA.” Bol’s Wikipedia page lists his birthdate as October 16, 1962, but they couch the assertion with the phrase “he is believed to have been born…”. “[Bol] had no idea of his age and the kid who came over with him didn’t know how old he was,” Mackey said. “No one knew how old he was. There you have it. A lil’ FYI. R.I.P. Manute Bol.
Paul George of the Indiana Pacers broke his leg in a USA Basketball scrimmage Friday night, likely sidelining him for all of next season if not his career. The 24-year-old star was pursuing James Harden in transition defense, then landed awkwardly against the stanchion supporting the rim and backboard. He stayed down, and a replay on ESPN clearly showed his leg fracturing (the video, obviously, is graphic in nature and may not be suitable for all): Paul George Breaks Leg The Indianapolis Star says George suffered a compound fracture of his right leg. After George was taken off the court in a stretcher to a standing ovation, Team USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski led the players to mid-court in unison. He informed the crowd they were calling off the remainder of the scrimmage, while George was taken to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Las Vegas. George tweeted before going into surgery last night, “Thanks everybody for the love and support… I’ll be ok and be back better than ever!!! Love y’all!!” Early reports indicate the surgery went well, and that George, who averaged 21.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season, may play again. He is still likely out for the entirety of the 2014-15 NBA season, however. Paul George Highlights The NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, released the following statement: “It was difficult to watch the injury that Paul George sustained tonight while representing his country. The thoughts and prayers of all of us at the NBA are with Paul and his family.” Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird said last night: “We are aware of the injury sustained by Paul George in Friday’s Team USA game … and we are obviously greatly concerned. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Paul.” As are ours, as we wish the baller a speedy return to the court.

Poor K.Michelle can’t win. After revealing she’s been dating Indiana Pacers baller Lance Stephenson just this week, we’ve learned that Stephenson is still hot and heavy with the mother of his two-year-old daughter who is now expecting again! We received this email from a close friend of the baller’s baby moms… Dear Bossip, For the past three years my closest friend has been in an on and off again relationship with her “NBA” daughters father. Recently, I thought things were getting better between them being that I seen them together at her home in New York, but then she tells me K Michelle has been calling his phone while he was spending time with her and their two year old daughter. I am not one to listen to the media but there have been a lot of articles about her and my friends baby father on the Internet lately. I forgot to mention his name is Lance Stephenson. My friend has been telling me what’s been going on and how he left his daughter on the 4th of July to take K Michelle on a date which I personally think broke her heart only because I truly believe she is pregnant. She had just told me they had unprotected sex that same day, which is crazy because he just bought K Michelle some kind of ring. I never liked this dude so I am not surprised from any of this because he did something similar during her last pregnancy. She was four months pregnant when he was arrested for beating on his first child’s mother but I guess she didn’t learn he was no good then and took him back. I need help trying to convince her he has played her big time this time around and he is doing it in public so she cant be in denial about this. She doesn’t learn her lesson when it comes to this guy but I am hoping he stays away for good this time, especially if she is pregnant!!!! Because from what I see he doesn’t help her take care of their two year old daughter or his four year old that he has with another female, yes I know he is busy so I would hate to see her go through another stressful pregnancy. I am really worried about her and I don’t want her to go back to him or let him off easily, how can I help her through these rough times? Damn… Sounds like homegirl has got it bad. Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban Says He Would Draft Brittney Griner Via ESPN Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would be willing to give Baylor women’s star Brittney Griner the opportunity to prove she could play in the NBA. Cuban said he would consider selecting Griner, a 6-foot-8 three-time All-American and Big 12 player of the year, in the second round of the NBA draft. If the Mavs don’t draft her, Cuban said he would have “no problem whatsoever” inviting Griner to try out for a spot on Dallas’ summer league team. “If she is the best on the board, I will take her,” Cuban said before the Mavs’ Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. “I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.” Griner dominated women’s college basketball with her size and athleticism, scoring 3,283 points and blocking 748 shots in her career. She also had 18 dunks, including 11 her senior season. Griner would love the opportunity. “I would hold my own! Lets do it.” she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night in response to Cuban. A woman trying out for an NBA team is not unprecedented. Former UCLA star Ann Meyers tried out for the Indiana Pacers in 1979. Cuban said it’s difficult to evaluate whether Griner could play in the NBA because of the caliber of her competition, comparing it to scouting players from small schools. However, Cuban said he was absolutely serious about at least extending an invitation for Griner to try out this summer. “She’d still have to make the team,” Cuban said. “I’m not going to carry her just to carry her. I don’t think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to giving her the opportunity.” Never one to ignore the bottom line of a business venture, when it was mentioned that Brittney’s presence in the league would be very, VERY profitable Cuban added: “It would, wouldn’t it? See how she could do?” Cuban said. “That’d sell out a few games.” Even in a social experiment, money is a still a major issue. Put your money where your mouth is Mark! Jeremy Evans of the Utah Jazz won the 2012 NBA Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday night with one cool dunk and two not awful ones. Evans ultimately beat out Derrick Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Chase Budinger of the Houston Rockets and Paul George of the Indiana Pacers to earn the honor, and he mostly did it on the strength of his two-balls-at-the-same-time jam that we posted earlier.
