Reinventing Memorial Day: Remarkable Series in Fast Company

Steve McCallion writes a remarkable series in Fast Company asking “Why has Memorial Day, like so many of our national holidays, been reduced to appliance sales, fast food specials, and vacation deals?” He starts with Reinventing Memorial Day: Beyond the Mattress Blowout Sale : In this era of convenience and instant gratification–when mobile screens hold more interest than parades; when regulations are needed to prevent texting while driving; when TV idols are created in the time it takes to sing a song–it’s difficul… Read the full story on TreeHugger

My Fall TV Schedule

I realized earlier this week that I have managed to make it so I will be watching enough weekly TV shows that I’ll have at least one new show for each night of the week.  Some of them fall on the same day, like Smallville and Dollhouse are both on Friday, but I still have seven separate shows slated.  Because I know you’re wondering, I figured I’d enlighten everyone.

True Blood 2:12

I’m not sure that I watched an entire season of this show to have it end like this.  I don’t think it was bad, it was just maybe organized a little poorly for my taste. Maybe I’m used to a different kind of TV series, one where the season villain is really the only thing focused on in the final episode of the season.  Is this unreasonable of me?  I didn’t mind the other stuff, I guess I just felt like after all this, Mary Ann was just defeated too easily.  I honestly paused the show when she was killed and said “it’s only half over?!” I also feel a little let down by not spoilers from Rutina Wesley, the actor who plays Tara.  She said the ending was kind of bittersweet, but I don’t feel that way at all.  I mean, it’s bittersweet for her character, but at this point I don’t really feel like it is for the show.  It sucks that Eggs died, but I don’t know that we had enough time with him to really love him and be upset by his death.

Six Feet Under 1:9

I was really touched by this episode, it’s always more sad when the death is a small child instead of an older person.  Is it because you know they had a whole future ahead of them, whereas with an adult they’ve at least had a chance to do something? I guess needless to say, it was an emotional episode.  I believe I have mentioned that I’m still a bit death sensitive, and probably will be for awhile, so a really sad and touching death like this one gets to me a lot. And of course, let this be a lesson about loaded guns around kids.  Always always always be careful!  Your kids are much more likely to find that gun and hurt themselves than you are to actually need it as defense.
