James Brown Biopic to Star Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman (42) is no stranger to biopics. He’ll be starring in another big one soon, this time playing the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. The 31-year actor has been cast as the lead in the biopic chronicling the singer’s meteoric rise from poverty to music glory in the 1960s and 70s. James Brown died in 2006 at the age of 73. It is not yet known if Boseman will be singing the songs himself or lip-synching to Brown tracks in the film. Mick Jagger and Brian Grazer are also on board as producers, while Tate Taylor will direct. Filming on the project is expected to begin this fall. Prior to starring in 42 as Jackie Robinson, Boseman had appeared mostly on TV. Boseman is also a playwright and director of several short films.

Galleries: Have A Look At The Stunning Stills From ’42,’ The Film About The Legendary Jackie Robinson [Photos]

We can’t wait to see this film! For the folks who have been waiting for a theatrical film about Jackie Robinson’s historical move into Major League Baseball, ’42′ hits theaters on April 12 via Warner Bros. Pictures/Legendary Pictures. The film was directed by Brian Helgeland and stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, Andre Holland, Lucas Black, Hamish Linklater, Ryan Merriman and T.R. Knight. Here’s more info: Drama. Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. “42” tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking—ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow. This film has been rated PG-13 for thematic elements including language. BOSSIP is also doing a ’42′ giveaway. Stay tuned for details on how to enter.

Gay Former NFL’er Says He Knows A Few Players Who Are “Semi-Open,” But The Gay “Jackie Robinson” Of Pro Sports Might Just Look Like 2 Chainz

The days of pro players hiding in the closet may truly be numbered… In an interview with Toure on Daily Beast now openly gay former NFL baller Wade Davis discusses how there are already semi-openly gay pro players and his fears about the “Jackie Robinson” moment for the LGBT community: T: Is there a professional athlete fraternity or an NFL fraternity? W: Both. There’s one that exists in the NFL and there’s one for sports. It’s not talked about, it just is what it is. Because we’ve all gone through the same thing so there’s a protection that exists if you’ve gone through what it takes to make it at that level. T: So the guys in the NFL who are gay have protection? W: Yes. Openly gay is a bit strong cuz when we think of openly gay we think of walking down the street with your boyfriend but there are players who know that this player may have a boyfriend or may not date women and that’s just it. It’s not talked about. He’s there to do a job, I’m here to do a job, it’s not talked about, he’s my brother, he doesn’t treat me any different than anyone else does. T: Can you give an approximate number of how many gay men there are in the NFL? W: I only know of three. T: You know of three guys in the NFL? W: Not only in the NFL. There’s some in the NFL and some in the NBA. T: Known names? W: I wouldn’t say they’re known names but one’s a starter. Hmmm wonder who that could be? Any ideas folks? Hit the flip for Davis’ explanation on “semi-open” players and why he doesn’t think it’s as big a deal as some folks make it.

Jay-Z Used Old Subway Signs For New Brooklyn Nets Logo

Black-and-white crest is ‘a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,’ Jay tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Brooklyn Nets’ logo Photo: NBA Jay-Z once fancied himself the black Branch Rickey, the man who broke the athletic color barrier and signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Sure, Hov used poetic license when he spit the line on 2009’s “Brooklyn Go Hard,” but now that Mr. Carter is part of the brain trust that will transplant the NBA’s Nets to his native BK, the God MC has surely changed the game. At the end of April, the Brooklyn Nets unveiled their new logo, a Jigga-approved black-and-white crest, which bucks the flash and pizzazz typical of most NBA logos these days. “I wanted to make it really classic and strong; a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,” Jay told MTV News on Monday after his press conference where he announced his upcoming two-day Made in America music festival in Philadelphia. Since his 1996 debut album ( Reasonable Doubt ) Jay has stood as an ambassador for New York City’s largest borough. Though the music mogul has gone on to acquire life’s finer things, through songs like “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Where I’m From” and his #1 hit “Empire State of Mind,” Hova has always rapped about the darker side of his hometown as well. The struggle eventually breeds strength and it was the strength that Jay hoped to capture in the new Nets design. “It’s real gritty and we’re not about flash — well, sometimes,” he said with a brief pause. “Just the roots of Brooklyn as this very bold, strong, simple logo” When the NBA’s Seattle Sonics franchise moved to Oklahoma in 2008, the team was rechristened the Oklahoma City Thunder and was branded with a new color-filled logo fit for post-millennium basketball. With this new Nets move, Jay-Z and Nets brass looked to the past in order to ensure the team’s place in the future. Vintage New York transit system signage served as their chief inspiration. “It was really a take off the old subway signs, if you look at the old subway signs they were in black and white. It was that strong, beautiful, iconic black and white,” Jay said. “I wanted to pick something that would stand the test of time and be here forever.” What do you think of the new Brooklyn Nets logo? Tell us in the comments!
