There’s a lot to look at in this international trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation : Explosions. The muscled forms of Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson . More explosions. Masked men engaging in ninja sword fights while suspended from a snowy mountain. Avalanche! Jonathan Pryce appearing to reprise his role as the Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies. Bruce Willis making cracks about his cholesterol after a near-death experience. Wait! What? Isn’t that what John McClane does in the Die Hard movies — like A Good Day to Die Hard , which hits movie theaters a month and a half before the G.I. Joe sequel? Okay, so no one plays a smirking, self-deprecating hard-ass better than Willis. Which is why you should learn how to tell them apart: In A Good Day to Die Hard , he’s John. In G.I. Joe Retaliation , he’s Joe. Simpler movie, simpler name. Got it? Good. Now, watch some explosions. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Prometheus writer Damon Lindelof may not be writing Star Wars Episode VII , but he can still suggest plot points. On Thursday, FirstShowing.net debunked some pretty rampant and persistent speculation that 1952 , the science-fiction project that Lindelof and Brad Bird are writing for the new owner of LucasFilm, Disney , was the code name for a new Star Wars trilogy. But just two days earlier, when rumors were still making the rounds, Lindelof took to his Twitter feed to suggest some Episode VII ideas that were better suited to a Robot Chicken Star Wars special. “Chewbacca’s great-great grandson is named Drewbacca and he must overcome his allergies to lasers and meat,” wrote in one Tweet, which sounds just a tad more entertaining than the plot to the Star Wars Holiday Special . In another, he suggested: “Yoda’s Ghost gets annoyed by Obi-Wan’s Ghost (too much whining) and they fight with Ghostsabers.” Lindelof posted both with the hashtag “#IdeasForEpisodeVII” On Thursday, he also alluded to reaction over his rumored involvement in the new Star Wars trilogy. Linking to a post by Ain’t It Cool News , Lindelof tweeted: “If I ever need a suicide note, I’ll just print out this comments section,” in which he gets a bit of a thrashing. Wrote one commenter: “Keep fucking Damon Lindelof away from this!” In other Star Wars News, whatever you think about George Lucas’ decision to sell LucasFilm to Disney , it’s hard to take issue with his announcement that he’ll be giving a chunk of the $4 billion sale of his company to a foundation supporting education. “For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company,” 68-year-old Lucas said in a statement reported by The Wrap.com on Wednesday. “As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.” In 2010, Lucas signed the Warren Buffet and Bill Gates Giving Pledge in which participants commit “to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice either during their lifetime or after their death.” The website noted that Lucas is the chairman of Edutopia, which is part of part of the George Lucas Educational Foundation, and could put the Disney money into the foundation or create a new one. Film’s co-writer Damon Lindelof talks to MTV News about similarities between film and TV series and the cosmic questions they ask. By Kevin P. Sullivan Michael Fassbender in “Prometheus” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Damon Lindelof is no stranger to controversy. The writer/producer rose to stardom thanks to “Lost,” the mystery-filled television series he co-created with J.J. Abrams. This weekend, ” Prometheus ” — a new film from Ridley Scott set in the “Alien” universe, which Lindelof co-wrote — opens in theaters, and it has already become a divisive topic of discussion among filmgoers. Many have voiced complaints about “Prometheus” that echo the ones heard in 2010 after “Lost” aired its series finale. Scott’s new film, like “Lost,” does not offer explicit answers to all of the cosmic questions it poses, but adopts the idea of “definitive answers” as a central theme. We spoke with Lindelof about the connections between “Prometheus” and “Lost,” and whether the similarities are there purposefully or by coincidence. Made to Divide? Despite the consistently polarizing nature of Lindelof’s work both on “Lost” and “Prometheus,” the writer said that divisiveness is not expected but understood. “I do think that it’s possible to make something that’s empirically awesome and that everybody loves, just as it’s possible to make something that’s a piece of sh– and everybody hates,” Lindelof said. “For me, my goal is to make something that everybody loves.” As a fan of the sci-fi franchises he’s become involved with, including “Alien” and “Star Trek,” Lindelof understands that to work in those arenas means not making everyone happy. “I think that I know and accept that the price of admission for me to basically crash those parties is that I’m not going to be able to please everybody, in some cases including myself,” he said. “But I wouldn’t change it for the world because these stories mean so much to me.” Finale Fallout In interviews, Lindelof has never tried to pretend that the “Lost” finale was anything but divisive, and he has spoken openly about how fan outrage has negatively affected him. The fans’ demand for answers caused much of their frustration, and it’s that same need that drives the main characters in “Prometheus.” When you pair the ideas behind “Prometheus” and Lindelof’s writing credit, it’s difficult to avoid trying to connect the dots and provide your own explanation for the reasoning behind them. While it could never be as simple as “A led to B,” Lindelof did explain that he took the job for “Prometheus” just weeks after the “Lost” finale aired. “We acknowledge [that] asking questions you’re not going to answer explicitly can lead to frustration and backlash, but Ridley knew all of that when he hired me,” he said. “This was my first writing gig after ‘Lost,’ and it was ground zero of what I would say was the level of discontent surrounding the finale of the show and how well it wrapped everything up and answered people’s burning questions to the point where Ridley and I talked actively about that a number of times in the first week that we met each other.” According to Lindelof, Scott appreciated the way “Lost” ended. “He was kind of delighted by it, and not delighted in the sense of that I was purposely withholding the answers,” Lindelof said. The Answers The crew of the spaceship Prometheus has to learn a lesson that’s as old as science fiction itself. Definitive answers to life’s toughest questions come at a cost that they may not be willing to pay, and for Lindelof, answering those questions in the film would have been even more unsatisfying. “If you’re going to write a movie about people who essentially want the following questions answered: ‘Who made me and why?’ ‘What is the meaning of my life?’ ‘What happens when we die?’ and ‘Do we have to die?,’ putting the answers to those in black and white on the page is a recipe for disaster because even had we tried to definitively answer those questions, there’s no way that they would have been satisfying in any way,” Lindelof said. That isn’t to say that “Prometheus” doesn’t answer any questions. Lindelof said that he feels there are sufficient explanations for many of the film’s biggest mysteries. “The movie had to be content with when the audience sees the trailer, and there are questions being asked in the trailer, and the trailer is asking the question of, ‘We’re going to meet our makers.’ Does the movie answer the question of ‘Are these people our makers?’ Yes, I believe it does, definitely,” he said. Lindelof contends that when you’re exploring ideas this large, you have to prepare yourself for a lack of a truly satisfying answer. “I wouldn’t say, ‘Lower your expectations,’ but I also feel like there is a little bit of a sense of buyer beware going into a movie that is asking questions that are as ginormous as this.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prometheus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Say what you will about Damon Lindelof, but the man has a knack for parodying bloated Hollywood excess. You’ll recall that last June Lindelof wrote a BP-themed sequel treatment for Esquire titled Armageddoner! , and now he’s back with an alternate version of Sex and the City 2 . Don’t worry, fans; this version doesn’t feature a big meeting of all Carrie’s ex-boyfriends in a church at some unknown time in the afterlife. It does feature a fatwa, though.

Despite its first-place finish, fourth ‘Shrek’ installment performed well below expectations. By Josh Wigler “Shrek Forever After” The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Shrek Forever After” ($71.3 million) #2 “Iron Man 2” ($26.6 million) #3 “Robin Hood” ($18.7 million) #4 “Letters to Juliet” ($9.1 million) #5 “Just Wright” ($4.2 million) After last weekend’s victorious battle against Ridley Scott’s medieval epic “Robin Hood,” Jon Favreau and Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 2” finally succumbed to a different fantasy film: “Shrek Forever After,” DreamWorks Animation’s fourth installment in the long-running animated franchise. Despite a first-place finish worth $71.3 million, the box-office performance for “Shrek Forever After” was nowhere near as successful as many had initially expected. “Forever After” was unable to come close to the massive $121.6 million earned by “Shrek the Third” in its opening weekend in 2007, or even the $108 million debut for “Shrek 2” in 2004. Considering the “Shrek” franchise’s name recognition, all-star talent and increased prices for 3-D ticket sales, it’s rather surprising that the DreamWorks film couldn’t make a bigger push towards resolving its $165 million budget. Indeed, “Forever After” could wind up being “The Final Chapter” after all. Although “Shrek” certainly performed below expectations, it didn’t fall nearly as hard as Universal’s “MacGruber,” based on the “Saturday Night Live” sketch of the same name. Even with a solid cast including Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer, “MacGruber” collected a mere $4.1 million this weekend for a sixth-place finish. Limited releases included “Kites,” the romance that made $1 million in just over 200 locations, and “Solitary Man,” which earned the weekend’s highest per-screen average at $22,250 per location. Upcoming Releases Moviegoers searching for an action-adventure epic should look no further than next week’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” But Jake Gyllenhaal’s video game movie faces fierce competition in the form of “Sex and the City 2” starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
