SOPA Blackout: Help Stop Internet Censorship!

A key bill currently before the U.S. Congress, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and its companion bill in the Senate, the Protect IP Act (PIPA), need to be torpedoed ASAP. At THG, we normally refrain from such overt political messages, but the fact is these bills would censor content and impose harmful regulations on millions of people. Legions of Internet users and entrepreneurs oppose SOPA and PIPA, and for good reason. They would enable the government to – indiscriminately – regulate the web. If these bills pass, which is a real threat, the web will be transformed dramatically. Not only are the livelihoods of sites like THG at risk, but behemoths like Google. Google! Check out their SOPA “blackout” logo today in defiance of the legislation: In a nutshell, the bill would enable easy, and unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small ones won’t have sufficient resources to defend themselves against corporate giants. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding for competitors, even if copyright isn’t infringed. Millions will be suppressed, strong-armed and blacklisted – LEGALLY. Combating piracy of intellectual property is a worthwhile goal, but there are fair, effective means of achieving it without broad government overreach into our lives. SOPA and PIPA are not it. In fact, they will do just the opposite, quashing the innovation of small businesses everywhere while rewarding a select few arbitrarily. The only PIPA we like is Pippa Middleton . The only SOPA we care about is … we have no joke for that one. It hits so close to home, we can’t even think straight. Follow this link to make a call to your U.S. representative . It only takes a minute, they connect you immediately. Or follow this link to join Google’s effort . Stand up for individual liberty or the Internet as you know it may be altered forever.

21% of Africa’s Freshwater Species Threatened With Extinction (Pics)

Photo via ICUN According to a new report from The International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN), a 5-year study involving 200 scientists has found that the flora and fauna of Africa’s freshwater ways are threatened with extinction thanks to four main factors: agriculture, water abstraction, dams and invasive species. In all, 21% of the freshwater species are at risk, a huge number that turns right around to threaten the culprits — the livelihoods of millions of humans are put at risk with such a loss. Despite the dire news, the report… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Gulf fishermen say they’re not convinced seafood is safe

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – They've waited months to get back to their livelihoods, yet some Gulf Coast fishermen are worried the waters reopened too soon, putting public safety at risk. Fishermen from Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida met for hours in Biloxi Wednesday. They say they are concerned that since the oil well has been capped, the federal and state government leaders think the crisis is over. The fishermen say they have seen some strange behavior in the sea life, and they blame the chemical dispersants used to break up the oil. They want more testing done on seafood. Mark Stewart is a Mississippi fisherman. “All the sea life is trying to get out of the water,” Stewart said. “The turtles are all out there with their heads sticking out of the water trying to get air. It's not normal.” “Sea creatures that are normally bottom species are on top of the water due to the water column is so full of dispersants,” said Danny Ross, another Mississippi fisherman. “The oxygen level is so low. A Horseshoe Crab, it's on top of the water trying to swim. We've never seen that in our life. We might not be biologists, but we know our waters. This is not normal.” Gulf Coast fishermen say they chose Biloxi as their meeting place because the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Conference is underway here. Several of the fishermen told us they planned to attend the event to make their voices heard and express doubts as to whether the seafood is safe to eat. Kathryn Birren traveled from Florida for the meeting. “Fishermen do not want to lose our credibility or deliver contaminated seafood to market,” Birren said. “We have lost enough already. As fishermen, we know that the use of dispersants has made this crisis vastly worse for everyone. It has hidden the oil from view and has created a false sense of health and safety.” “We want the use of dispersants to be ceased immediately. We want seafood fresh to be tested for dispersants, which is not happening at this time. We want the dispersants tested for their harmfulness to seafood,” said Birren. “They're telling people it's okay to eat seafood from our Sound out here, it's not,” said Mississippi fisherman James Miller. “We're very concerned fishermen. The dispersants are taking all the oxygen out of the water. They don't want to come to that conclusion. They just want to sweep it under the rug.” Some commercial fishermen tell WLOX they believe low oxygen levels is the reason why they've haven't been able to catch very much seafood since the waters reopened. Fishermen created a lists of requests from the meeting: 1. The EPA and Coast Guard to discontinue current chemical dispersant use and test all seafood and fisheries with updated testing protocols. 2. BP and upcoming Feinberg Commission to establish more transparency for BP claims process and hiring practices regarding VOO program. 2. BP and federal agencies train and hire local commercial fishermen for all hazardous testing initiatives and clean -up work in a culturally competent manner. 4. Federal, state, and local agencies to develop community based health centers to service at-risk seafood industry population who are exposed to dispersants and oil clean-up. 5. Establish and fund regional collaborative scientific community to monitor and research oil spill impact on the environment. The collaborative scientific community will be advised by a committee of Gulf of Mexico resident leaders (non-related to the oil and energy industry) to ensure open and transparent centralized data management center that provides free public access. 6. Establish a regional task force with representation of community leaders from all Gulf Coast states including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida to collaboratively work with federal agencies to develop a comprehensive workforce development plan. The Gulf Coast Fund organized the meeting. Tea Partiers Boycott MSNBC Advertisers Over ‘Slanderous’ Documentary

Some Tea Party leaders are calling for conservatives to boycott MSNBC’s advertisers, after the network ran a documentary on June 16 that they say unfairly slandered the movement. Two of the Tea Party leaders interviewed in the Chris Matthews-narrated documentary are asking supporters to write, call and fax the offices of Dawn and its parent company Proctor and Gamble and request that they cease giving advertising dollars to Matthews’ “Hardball” program on MSNBC. FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey and Kitchen Table Patriots member Ana Puig jointly called the documentary a “propaganda piece” and urged Tea Party groups around the country to boycott Dawn products. “The program ‘Rise of the New Right’ was low-ball journalism at its worst,” said the Kitchen Table Patriots in a statement released today. “Chris Matthews and his Hardball program slandered the Tea Party movement, and misled the American people by distorting facts about the Tea Party movement, its motivations and its history.” Brendan Steinhauser, a grassroots director at FreedomWorks, noted that other groups like the American Grassroots Coalition, the National Tea Party Federation, Tea Party Nation and Liberty Central have also signed on to the boycott. Critics say that Matthews’ documentary smeared Tea Partiers as “violent,” “conspiracy theorists,” and “racists” by relying heavily on insinuations, heavily edited sound bites, and allegations from left-wing activist groups. The introduction of the video splices back-to-back shots of militia members firing guns with Tea Party protesters holding up signs criticizing President Obama’s policies, as ominous music droned in the background. In one segment, Matthews appeared to insinuate that FreedomWorks leader Armey is supportive of “birthers,” a group of fringe conspiracy theorists who believe President Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. “While not embracing birthers, many conservative leaders refuse to separate from them,” said Matthews in a voiceover that led in to an interview Matthews held with Armey. “Barack Obama’s citizenship, is that a real case or not?” asks Matthews. “There’s a venue for that. Probably in the courts,” Armey replied. But Steinhauser, who organizes FreedomWorks’ national events, says that any suggestion that Armey sympathizes with birthers is “just ridiculous.” “[The documentary] obviously didn’t give his full answer,” said Steinhauser. “At our events we’ve been approached by just about every birther in the book. We kept [birthers] Allan Keyes [and] Orly Taitz as far as possible from our big September 12 event. I told them ‘that’s not who we are – go have your own rally.’ The movement out and out rejects that.” And other facts presented in the documentary don’t appear to stand up to scrutiny. At one point in the video, Mark Potok, a director at the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) warned Matthews’ that “we’ve gone from numbers like, you know, 170 militias to well over 500.” But the SPLC’s most recent report on right-wing groups released in Spring 2010 claimed that it only defines 127 organizations in the U.S. as “militias.” Steinhauser said that getting the message out about the boycott is just the first step in the campaign. “This is just the beginning stages. We’ve got some other things planned down the road in the days and weeks to come,” he said. For further analysis of Matthews’ documentary, see Lachlan Markey’s Newsbusters report .

MSNBC’s Brewer Annoyed at Barton’s ‘Shakedown’ Reference, But Colleague Ed Schultz Used It With Pride

In a satellite interview with Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) held shortly before 1 p.m. EDT today, MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer criticized Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) for denouncing the president pushing BP to agree to a $20-billion escrow account for oil spill damages as a “shakedown”: So, there’s Joe Barton calling the $20 billion in escrow a shakedown, and as you point out, there are people in your district who have lost their livelihoods! They wonder how they can feed their families! But yesterday, Brewer’s MSNBC colleague Ed Schultz used similar language to voice his giddy approval of President Obama’s maneuvering : President Obama! You are the dude! The president takes the heads of BP behind closed doors, shakes them down for $20 billion, and gets an apology.  President Obama went behind closed doors today with Tony Hayward and the other suits from BP and informed them it’s time to pay.  If you go by today’s results, you’d have to say the President of the United States hit it out of the park. In his own way the President of the United States took on a multinational [corporation] shook ’em down for $20 billion for the American people. President Obama got more out of BP than the Congress ever has. The day before that, just two hours before President Obama’s Oval Office address, Schultz told viewers he hoped the president would sound “like a dictator” and would rhetorically speaking, press his “boot on the neck of BP tonight.”
