The town of Wasco, California, has apparently been targeted by a mysterious clown. Or clowns. There appear to be several of them, lurking after dark. These clowns appear to be skilled at social media use, too. They’ve been popping up on Twitter and Instagram, sharing photos of themselves around town … Instagram and Twitter (bio: “IM [sic] THE REAL DEAL”) profiles imply that this is some sort of clown gang. One notes, “I’m not the only one out there.” The clown mostly seems like an elaborate Halloween prank, and residents are treating it as such. Some of them don’t appear to be laughing … but others are. “Some residents go in cars searching for him. They have flashlights and try to spot him in neighborhoods after he posts to Twitter,” Noah Sanchez said. At the same time, “It’s kind of fun, though, to get us in the Halloween spirit.” Some of their antics go beyond innocent Instagram photos, though. Lt. Jason Matson of Bakersfield did tell Tech Times that reports “range anywhere from a guy carrying a gun to a guy carrying a knife running up to houses.” Wasco, California Clowns A 14-year-old has been arrested and booked into juvenile hall for “harassing minors” while dressed up as a clown in town but so far, that’s the only arrest. The boy told police he was inspired by social media … a copycat clown. So who’s behind this spooky sight? How deep does the mystery go? Last September, a similar trend took place in the United Kingdom, where a series of bizarre run-ins with the Northampton Clown left local residents on edge. So maybe the events on both sides of the Atlantic are related? Not likely, but both made more than a few people ask: What’s that clown think he’s doing?!
