The Walking Dead Creator Should Stop Comparing Himself To George R.R. Martin

Robert Kirkman, creator of ‘The Walking Dead,’ apologizes for being ‘disappointed’ in George R.R. Martin. But he should probably stop comparing himself to the ‘Game of Thrones’ author.

The Walking Dead Season 7: On the Way!

AMC has arrived a very difficult decision: The cable network will NOT kill off The Walking Dead. We kid, of course. The Walking Dead is the highest rated show on all of television among the advertiser-friendly demographic of 18-34-year olds. AMC might as well have just renewed it through Season 29 at this point. Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, also said via press release that he has renewed Talking Dead, the highly-rated after-show hosted by Chris Hardwick. “Thank goodness someone had a Magic 8-Ball with them in our many long internal meetings about these renewals. When, on the third shake, ‘without a doubt’ filled the murky blue screen, we knew we had to proceed with new seasons of The Walking Dead and Talking Dead. “All joking aside, we are so proud to share these shows with fans who have been so passionate, communicative and engaged. “We are grateful for and continually impressed by the talent, effort and excellence on continuous display by Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, Chris Hardwick and the many people with whom we partner to make these unique shows possible. “The result: More Walking and Talking. Hooray.” The Walking Dead Season 6 possibly killed a major character last week. Is he really, truly done? You can always watch The Walking Dead online via our friends at TV Fanatic to keep current. ‘Walking Dead’ Producers Preview Season Three

‘You haven’t seen anything yet,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News about show’s future. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Andrew Lincoln in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC “We’re all infected,” former cop Rick Grimes told his fellow group of survivors in the “Walking Dead” season finale — and boy, is that an understatement. In an action-packed episode that killed off multiple characters in brutal fashion, left the divisive farm completely in ruins, introduced a fan-favorite sword-wielding wanderer and teased the promise of a prison to come, it’s safe to say that the “Walking Dead” season two finale left fans feverish for more. The AMC zombie series, which returns for its third season in October, answered long-term mythological questions (The content of the CDC’s Dr. Jenner’s whisper? No longer a secret!) and pushed the characters into new places, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps most importantly for fans of the comic books, “The Walking Dead” has left the farm behind, with the prison very much in the near future. Between that change of scenery and the introduction of iconic character Michonne (with chained zombies in tow no less), season three is shaping up to be the best of the lot — a notion that executive producers Glen Mazzara and Robert Kirkman certainly agree with, of course. “When I think of ‘The Walking Dead’ book, I think about the prison. I think about the Governor. I think about Rick. I think about Michonne. That, to me, is the heart of that story,” Mazzara told MTV News about the future of the survival horror series. “That’s what I’m excited about writing and seeing come to life. I think that this has been a great chapter one. But now we’re moving into our best material. I’m really excited to see what the actors, the writers and the directors can do with that material.” Kirkman, who created the comic books upon which the TV show is based, is equally excited, if not more so, to revisit “the best material” of the original “Walking Dead” story. “When the camera rises over the trees and the prison comes into view, I did get a little choked up,” Kirkman confessed. “It’s a really cool, very bold promise to the audience. To show that and to say, just wait until you see what we’re going to do with season three. I’m intimately involved with this show. So knowing what we’ve already discussed and knowing the different things that we want to do, I can say that we are at the very beginning of this show. We haven’t quite gotten to a lot of the big things we’ve been building to just yet. If you’re a big fan of ‘The Walking Dead’ and you enjoyed season one and season two, then you haven’t seen anything yet.” “We’re just getting started,” Mazzara agreed. After the season two finale, we’re inclined to agree. What did you think of the “Walking Dead” season finale? Are you looking forward to what comes next in season three? ‘Walking Dead’ Death Was Necessary, Producer Says

‘The Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story,’ show runner Glen Mazzara tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal’s offing. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: Gene Page / AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! The inevitable has finally happened: Shane Walsh is dead. Double-dead, in fact. In the latest episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Better Angels,” Jon Bernthal’s disgruntled ex-cop finally met his demise at the hands of old friend-turned-new foe Rick Grimes. After luring Rick out into a field in search of missing prisoner Randall — whom Shane had already killed — Shane turned his gun on Rick, ready to kill his former partner and inherit his “broken wife” and “weak boy” as his own family. Rick ultimately talked Shane down, but what looked to be a peace offering was a trick of its own: Grimes plunged a knife through Shane’s heart, killing him in seconds … … and seconds later, Shane was back on his feet, a bloodthirsty zombie looking to finish the job. Thankfully for Rick, his son Carl arrived in the nick of time, gun in hand, to put a bullet through the undead Shane’s brain. Shane’s death was always a foregone conclusion in the minds of fans. Rampant rumors of Bernthal’s “Walking Dead” exit aside, the character’s demise occurs in the sixth issue of Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, making his eventual death a virtual certainty from the time Bernthal’s casting was announced. But speaking with MTV News, “Walking Dead” show runner Glen Mazzara revealed that Shane’s death wasn’t always part of the plan. “At one point, we considered not killing Shane,” Mazzara told MTV News. “But what’s important about this season is, Rick has to step forward. He has to assume leadership of the group and he has to confront Shane.” With that in mind, there was only one way for the Rick/Shane confrontation to end. Though Shane is killed by young Carl in the comics, it was important to the “Walking Dead” writers that Rick be the one to pull the trigger — or bury the knife, as the case may be — on the show. “Rick has to be the one to kill Shane. He needs to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “That’s a huge loss for him, personally, for the group, but that’s what’s important about that: that it’s at Rick’s hand. We had considered doing it with a gun, but the knife was as personal as possible.” Many onlookers agree that Bernthal’s work as Shane has been the highlight of “Walking Dead” season two, so losing the character and the actor — especially so soon after Jeffrey DeMunn’s departure — is certainly a blow for the show. But for the writers, season two has largely been about transforming Rick from reluctant leader to confident decision-maker. In Mazzara’s opinion, the successful metamorphosis was made possible by Shane’s death. “It’s about Rick’s leadership, and if you see Rick [currently], when he steps forward and he discusses things with the group, you know that that’s a very different Rick than the one that came in at the beginning of the season,” the show runner said. “That’s what this season was about. It was about Rick, and the Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story. It was a problem that Rick had to deal with.” Will you miss Shane on “The Walking Dead,” or do you think he needed to die? Tell us in the comments section!

‘Walking Dead’ Creator Explains Shocking Death

‘It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler Jeffrey DeMunn in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! Death is par for the course on “The Walking Dead,” but that knowledge wasn’t enough to prepare for the shocking death of fan-favorite character Dale. Veteran actor Jeffrey DeMunn made his final appearance on the AMC survival horror series on Sunday night, and as is custom for the show, his exit was a gruesome one: While strolling along the quiet fields of Hershel’s farm, Dale was mortally injured by a roaming zombie and, ultimately, euthanized by a bullet to the head from antihero Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). “Dale’s death comes at a time where he’s very much needed,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about the shocking decision to kill DeMunn’s character. “[Rick and the gang] are trying to make this decision on what to do with Randall. The farm is becoming increasingly dangerous. There is still tension between Rick and Shane, despite the fact that it appears that they’ve put much of their differences behind them for now. They need that moral compass [in Dale], and it’s been taken away.” Losing Dale will have massive repercussions on the rest of the “Walking Dead” cast, Kirkman promised. Chief among those feeling the sting will be Carl (Chandler Riggs), who was partially responsible for Dale’s death. Earlier in the episode, Carl wandered into the forest by himself and taunted a seemingly immobile zombie — the very same zombie that ripped Dale’s guts out. “It’s interesting to see Carl doing kid stuff: going out on his own, trying to prove he’s strong enough to kill a zombie, proving that he’s deserving of carrying a gun,” Kirkman said. “He instigated this whole situation. We’re going to deal with his emotions and what comes from him causing Dale’s death to a certain extent. That’s definitely one of the big repercussions where Dale’s death affects these characters.” Once again, Dale’s death proves that the “Walking Dead” TV series is more than willing to deviate from the “Walking Dead” comic books. In Kirkman’s comics, Dale survives dozens and dozens of issues before finally succumbing to a fatal zombie bite. Seeing the popular character leave the show so soon is bound to be a shock for longtime fans then — but that wasn’t the only kind of shock value Kirkman and company were aiming for. “One of the things we wanted to do is show how dangerous these zombies actually are,” Kirkman said. “We were sitting around the writers’ room early on in the planning of season two, and we thought, you know, there aren’t a lot of zombies actually succeeding in what they’re trying to do. They eat people here and there, but we’ve never really had a zombie actually take down one of our main characters — at least not for a while, not since the first season. We wanted to remind people how dangerous these creatures are. It also threw a wrench in everyone’s plans to take Dale off the table, so those two ideas merged into one until we eventually came to offing this character.” Fans aren’t just losing Dale, of course: they’re also losing DeMunn, one of the finest actors “The Walking Dead” has to offer. Taking an actor of such high caliber off the playing field is not something the “Dead” team treated lightly, Kirkman said. “It’s a tremendous loss,” he admitted. “It’s difficult. It’s difficult for the cast, because they’ve become pretty much a family hanging out in rural Georgia. They keep each other company. It’s definitely a big deal [losing Jeffrey]; it sucks for everybody. Jeffrey in particular brought a serious sense of gravitas to the role and definitely legitimized this show by gracing us with his presence. We were lucky to get an actor of his caliber. He added a lot to the show, and his presence is definitely going to be missed. “But,” Kirkman added, “this is ‘The Walking Dead.’ It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous, and in order to do that, you have to lose characters from time to time.” Were you shocked by Dale’s death? ‘Walking Dead’ Season Two Is All About ‘Escalation’

Finding Sophia “kicks things off in a big way,” writer Robert Kirkman tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC Killing zombies is no walk in the park. But harder still is killing your fellow man. Former sheriff Rick Grimes knows this all too well: In the most recent episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Nebraska,” our gun-slinging hero put down two hot-blooded humans with two well-placed pistol shots, all because they posed a potential threat to his family and friends. For Rick, killing these two travelers was just another step forward on the bloody path he’s been walking since the series first began — and he’s not the only one embracing his inner darkness. Indeed, the death of poor Sophia in the “Walking Dead” midseason finale was just the start of a shift in momentum toward a deadlier, faster-paced string of episodes, where each and every one of the show’s characters will find themselves tested. “I think the loss of Sophia and looking for Sophia was a big thing that anchored the entire story of the first half of our second season,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about what to look forward to in the rest of season two. “For them to find her in that last episode in such a way, it puts a button on that group of episodes and opens the world up for the next half of the season. It kicks things off in a big way. Finding Sophia is the beginning of an escalation that brings us all the way to the very end of the second season. People are going to begin to see that escalation over the next several episodes.” Shown runner Glen Mazzara agrees with Kirkman, adding that Rick and Hershel are taking the death of Sophia especially hard. “When Hershel sees his family coming out of that barn, he realizes he’s been mistaken about everything he believed,” he told MTV News. “Rick also loses hope. Those two men have to figure out how to lead the group.” But there’s another outlier in the mix: Shane Walsh, the disgruntled ex-cop who’s losing more respect for Rick and becoming increasingly dangerous with each passing day. “Shane doesn’t agree with either one of them, and he wants to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “It really puts pressure on all of the characters in an interpersonal way that really makes the show incredibly exciting, to find out what’s going to happen and who’s going to lead that group.” What did you think of the latest “Walking Dead” episode? Tell us in the comments!
