The CW (formerly The WB) has been around now for over 20 years. Dawson’s Creek We don’t wanna wait… any longer to include this show on our countdown. Few shows have handled teen angst as well as Dawson’s Creek and even fewer have pulled off a love triangle as well. 7. Supernatural Staying power says a lot. So do really great looks. Can The Vampire Diaries exist without its leading lady, Elena Gilbert? That’s the question of the hour now that the reality is sinking in about Nina Dobrev leaving The Vampire Diaries after Season 6 draws to a close next month. Nina may not have broken the Internet a la Kim Kardashian nude in Paper , but she sure gave it a nice jolt with her departure announcement on Monday. Her exit immediately raised the inevitable questions of why – and whether it was solely due to the engagement of her ex Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed . Moreover, it has sparked debate over the hit show’s future on the CW, and whether it should even have one once its lead female star bows out in May. The official answer is yes, the show will go on, at least for one year. While it’s no longer a ratings juggernaut, TVD has already been renewed for Season 7 and, in turn, will return this fall to continue its wildly successful run. How successful it will be sans Dobrev is another matter, though. Will it experience a creative resurgence in her absence, or simply limp over the finish line, a shadow of its former self that we barely even recognize? By Jocelyn Vena Sophia Bush Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Sophia Bush sat down with Chelsea Handler on her E! talk show, “Chelsea Lately,” on Monday night, and while much of the conversation was lighthearted in nature, the “One Tree Hill” star also took time to remember her young cousin, 9-year-old Christina Green. Green was killed in Arizona over the weekend when a gunman attacked U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others outside a Tucson supermarket. “It’s been a lesson more than anything for me and for my family that life is incredibly short. You’ve gotta take every day and tell the people you love that you do. It’s really important for all of us to take a step back,” she said. “It’s easy to get heated and to scream and yell about what’s going on in the world, but when it’s getting irresponsible, when it’s getting out of control in the world of journalism and television …” Handler weighed in on the tragedy too, saying, “Anything that incites any sort of violence … I’m the biggest bully there is. I make fun of everybody … But you can’t ever, ever suggest violence.” Bush also expressed her sadness over the incident on Twitter , writing, “There are no words to explain what my cousin’s family is going through in Arizona. How can this be? Violence is never the answer.” Bush also encouraged anyone who knows somebody struggling with mental illness to lend a hand. “If you know anyone who is struggling, please reach out to them,” she added. “No one should feel so alone that they resort to senseless violence.” Congresswoman Giffords remains in the hospital, and her doctor, Michael Lemole, said that he is encouraged by her progress. “There is no change, and as frustrating as that may sound, that’s a good thing,” the doctor, who is the head of neurosurgery at the University Medical Center in Tucson, told NBC’s the “Today” show.
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is Paltrow’s cousin. By Gil Kaufman Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images The nation is in shock from the tragic shooting spree that took the lives of six people in Arizona on Saturday after a gunman attacked U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords outside a supermarket, shooting the Democratic House member in the head. Giffords remains in critical condition after the assault by troubled 22-year-old Jared L. Loughner, who is in police custody and has been charged with five federal counts, including the attempted assassination of a member of Congress. In total, 20 people were injured during the shooting spree and while Giffords’ wounds are considered extremely dangerous, her doctors have expressed reserved optimism that she may survive. The victims of the violence have an unexpected connection to the entertainment world. “Entertainment Tonight” reported that Giffords, 40, is the cousin of actress Gwyneth Paltrow. A representative for Paltrow released a statement about the incident, in which the star said, “Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting congresswoman Giffords, my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as well as the other victims of this horrible act of senseless violence.” Actress Sophia Bush was also related to one of the victims, 9-year-old Christina Green, who was the second cousin of the “One Tree Hill” star. Green, who was born on September 11, 2001 and who had developed an interest in politics, was Bush’s second cousin. The actress posted a series of tweets on Sunday decrying the violence that took her cousin’s life. “There are no words to explain what my cousin’s family is going through in Arizona,” she wrote. “How can this be? Violence is never the answer.” Bush also encouraged anyone who knows somebody struggling with mental illness to lend a hand. “If you know anyone who is struggling, please reach out to them,” she added. “No one should feel so alone that they resort to senseless violence.” Green, who appeared in a book called “50 Faces of Hope” that profiled children born on the day of the September 11 attacks, had recently joined the student council at her grade school and attended the event for Giffords because of her budding interest in politics. “We got robbed, she got robbed of a beautiful life she could have had,” mother Roxanna Green told CNN. President Obama has called for a national moment of silence on Monday at 11 a.m. in honor of the victims in the shooting.
