Some people have all the luck. Bartender Receives $17,500 Tip Can we hold a stack? According to The NY Daily News Last week at Conway’s Restaurant and Lounge in Springfield, Ore. an unidentified male patron, who routinely gave bartender Aurora Kephart unplayed Keno tickets as tips, on Tuesday night asked her to select a pair. Kephart chose wisely. When she checked the numbers, the 25-year-old bartender found she had two winning tickets — one for $5 and one for $17,500. “The look on his face was incredible,” Kephart told the Register-Guard newspaper. “I automatically handed it back to him. It was his ticket.” The patron refused to take the ticket back and made Kephart sign it to seal the deal. “The bar is 80% regulars, so everyone knows everyone,” she told the newspaper. “People were so excited for me.” Kephart was able to keep her composure and finish her shift. She gave the patron a percentage of the winnings and plans to save most of the rest of it. She does, however, have her eye on a new couch. “I never realized how expensive couches were,” she said. “Instead of waiting till Christmas or later, now I can buy something I really need.” He knew he wanted to take that ticket back though. Girl Auctions Off Her Virginity To Pay For College The cost of obtaining a college education has been a much debated topic for decades, but apparently American students aren’t the only ones going to drastic measures for a degree. via Fox News A 21-year-old woman from San Felipe, Chile is selling her virginity to the highest bidder and intends to use the money to pay for higher education. The woman who goes simply by the name of “Tamara” posted the offer on Aconcagua VIP, a Chilean escort site, claiming she needed the money to pay off her university debt. “Hi, I’m Tamara, I’m 21 years old and I’m selling my virginity because I have a big debt with the school and my family can’t pay for it,” the ad reads, according to Chilean newspaper La Estrella de Valparaíso. “I need money. If not, I wouldn’t do this.” The ad included six pictures of Tamara seductively posing in her underwear, as well as guidelines for her prospective buyers. She said she will require her patron to use protection and will only accept offers from individual men —any couples, lesbians and men with fetishes will not be considered. This gives a whole new meaning to doing something strange for some change. SMH.
If you and the fam headed to the multiplex to watch one of the season’s big new releases this week , chances are you caught Tom Hooper ‘s epic weepie Les Miserables or Quentin Tarantino ‘s Django Unchained . (Or maybe the in-laws dragged you to Parental Guidance , in which case, my condolences.) We’ll get spoilery all over Django later, but for now let’s get to hashing out the answer to the question that’s been on every showtune-lover’s mind for months: Which Les Miz cast member totally nailed the live-sung suffering for the big screen (and whose warblings made us les miserables )? I’ll start: Anne Hathaway ? NAILED IT. I’ll admit I was tres apprehensive at first listen when the trailers featuring her tremulous Fantine cry-singing hit the web. Watching the whole film, however, it’s clear Hathaway and Hugh Jackman are leading a masterclass in sing-acting for the entire Les Miserables cast, and in context the breathy imperfect perfection of Hathaway’s “I Dreamed A Dream” is downright heart-wrenching. It’s been said before, but the Oscar already belongs to that hitch in her voice that hits as she’s choking on tears while wailing about her miserable prostitute life with Hooper’s camera all up in her face — one of the only performances in the film riveting and emotional enough to sustain those damned extended close-ups . Runner-up for best performance in Les Miserables goes to Jackman, who wows in Jean Valjean’s pre-bath scenes with a filthy, feral energy that I honestly didn’t think he had in him. Pacing back and forth in the bishop’s chapel during “What Have I Done?” Jackman is riveting; you can see Valjean’s confused, broken mind reeling as Jackman spits and cries out in song, and Hooper’s camera work actually fits the number. It’s a shame, then, that the nearly three-hour running time of Les Miserables suffers from Jackman fatigue by the time Valjean’s singing his umpteenth song. On second thought, I’ll give Jackman a tie for runner-up with the little kid who plays Gavroche. (His name’s Daniel Huttlestone. He’s 12. He started his career on the West End. What have you done with your life lately?) Talk about making the most out of a handful of screen minutes; I’d trade a dozen of Jackman’s blah Valjean scenes for more of the impish street urchin who fights on the front lines with the students. I’d watch Gavroche picking pockets, or scamming rich folk, or stealing hearts up and down the dirty streets of Paris. In fact, can we just make him the Han of Les Miz and give him his own Fast & Furious -style prequel where he goes on a Moonrise Kingdom -esque adventure that never ends? (Also great: Samantha Barks as Eponine , the patron saint of girls harboring unrequited life-and-death crushes on boys who are too dumb to see what’s in front of them, and Aaron Tveit AKA Tripp from Gossip Girl as Enjolras.) Now for the not-so-great performances. Let’s just say that Amanda Seyfried ‘s birdlike soprano trill is totes fine, but I daresay she was wasted in the role of Cosette, AKA The Most Boring Girl In All Of France. I can take or leave Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Thenardiers, whose slapsticky numbers took some folks out of the abject misery of Les Mis but didn’t move the needle for me in either direction. Russell Crowe did himself no favors in my book with his mismatched 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts belting , but Hooper made it worse with those CG crane shots of Javert, wailing existential above the sewers in a dead-armed stance. I love me some Russell Crowe, but by the time he finally jumped to his death with a sigh of despair, I was rooting for it. Sweet, sweet relief. So, Movieliners: Did you hear the Les Miserables cast sing? Who made your heartstrings ache the hardest? Who sung the sweetest through the tears? Which cast members would you let warble their most miserable miseries in your castle on a cloud? The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills brought us “Girls Gone Ojai’d” Monday night as the women do drunken gymnastics and slather mud over one another. We break down who got wild and who was sober in THG’s +/- recap! We dive right back in where we left off with Brandi telling Adrienne to “shut the f**k up” and everyone else freaking out. Brandi was right, in that Adrienne was being obnoxious so Plus 10 for calling her on it. That doesn’t happen often enough. Unfortunately, Brandi has no filter and Lisa’s right. They are just looking for ammunition to use against her. Yolanda and Kyle were shocked by such language as they asked who spoke that way to another woman. Minus 15 . Um…have they ever watched their sister show The Real Housewives of New Jersey ? The women there throw the F-word around like some people say Hello . Lisa takes on the motherly role and manages to broker a half hearted peace between Brandi and Adrienne but did anyone really think that would last? Within the same meal Brandi Glanville gets a phone call telling her her book deal is a go and you’d think someone waved a red flag in front of Taylor. Yes, Taylor’s ticked off because Brandi dissed her book during last season’s reunion show but I had to laugh when she made fun of the content of Brandi’s book. Hmm…sex, lies, and celebrities cheating. Plus 19 . I hate to break it to you Taylor, but there’s definitely a market for that. Yolanda can’t believe the nastiness around this table. No wonder she heads to bed early. But before that we have golf cart races and where else can you find carts with a Bentley name plate? Plus 10 . Lisa’s in her element, even if she can’t get around Yolanda while they tear up the golf course. Then they hit the spa where things get cozy during a group mud treatment and Kim’s moans of delight scare Brandi. Minus 13 . It should have been funny but was actually a little creepy. That’s OK. It didn’t last long. Yolanda and Lisa were at it again as they started tossing muddy towels and ice water around. Plus 9. These two were certainly trying to keep this trip light hearted but I suppose a little serenity was too much to hope for. At dinner Yolanda explains that she can’t drink because she’s doing a holistic treatment for back pain that includes being injected with cells from a baby lamb fetus. OK, if it works that’s great but the first thing that comes to mind is eww. Minus 20. That night when Brandi starts passing out the Patron, Yolanda and Kim bow out. Kim’s working hard to stay sober so Plus 14 to her. Yolanda thinks drunk women are simply not classy. She may want to find a new group of friends. The ladies get plastered and begin arm wrestling. Then they’re practicing their cartwheels and it looks like Taylor forgot her underwear. Minus 10. In the end everyone leaves a little happier than they arrived until Kyle has to go and bring up Brandi’s F-bomb one more time. Minus 22 . Kyle acts innocent but she loves to stir up trouble. So in the end we land right back where we’ve begun! EPISODE TOTAL = -18! SEASON TOTAL = -13!
A fully clothed Prince Harry surfaced for the first time since his Las Vegas shenanigans went public and viral, stepping out for the WellChild Awards. On September 3, two weeks after his boozy, naked makeout session with Carrie Reichert and possible others in Sin City, Harry was seen in London. Wearing a navy blue suit and a red tie, the smiling Brit, who is a Patron of WellChild, greeted officers on his way to the InterContinental Hotel. The event is held annually to honors the doctors and nurses who care for young people. Harry is an annual attendee, and vowed to attend despite the scandal. There are rumors of a nude video, as well as cocaine use and hookers being present that night in the VIP suite, but so far, none of that has been proven. Just some mildly embarrassing, but generally harmless shots of Harry in the buff. Harry has yet to make a comment about his wild weekend, and may not do so; Prince Charles , his father, reportedly told him an apology isn’t necessary. Since the Prince Harry naked photos surfaced a week and a half ago, he’s been laying very low, but is determined to honor commitments such as today’s. Prince Harry :
Mitt Romney Chooses Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan As Vice Presidential Running Mate Moneymakin’ Mitt has made his choice for VP running mate and it’s 42-year-old, seven term Congressman from Wisconsin, Paul Ryan: With the political world watching, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney misspoke while introducing his running mate. Romney mistakenly introduced Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan on Saturday as the next president of the United States. Ryan, of course, has been tapped to serve as Romney’s vice presidential nominee. A sheepish Romney puts arms around Ryan and clarified his mistake before Ryan took the microphone. Romney says that he makes a mistake every once in a while. But he says he didn’t make a mistake with his selection of Ryan The ticket made its debut at a naval museum in Norfolk, Va., the initial stop of a bus tour through four battleground states in as many days. The USS Wisconsin, berthed at the museum, was their bunting-draped backdrop, a symbol of the nation’s military strength as well as an obvious reference to Ryan’s home state. First Romney, then Ryan, a generation younger than his patron, jogged down the ship’s gangplank to the cheers of hundreds and the stirring soundtrack from the movie “Air Force One.” As his family came on stage, Ryan knelt to embrace his daughter and two sons before kissing his wife. While word of Ryan’s selection leaked late Friday night and was posted by the campaign to its phone app before the speeches, Obama’s campaign withheld its reaction until the Republicans had spoken. “The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid,” Jim Messina, the president’s campaign manager, said in a written statement. “His plan would also end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors,” he said Here’s more about Ryan and his policies: At 42, Ryan is a more than two decades younger than the 65-year-old Romney. His conservative credentials are highly regarded by fellow Republican House members, while numerous polls during the primaries of winter and spring found that Romney’s credentials were suspect among the party’s core supporters. A seven-term congressman, Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee, and primary author of conservative tax and spending blueprints that the tea party-infused Republican majority approved over vociferous Democratic opposition in 2011 and again in 2012. They envision transforming Medicare into a program in which future seniors would receive government checks that they could use to purchase health insurance. Under the current program, the government directly pays doctors, hospitals and other health care providers. Ryan and other supporters say the change is needed to prevent the program from financial calamity. Critics argue it would impose ever-increasing costs on seniors. Other elements of the budget plan would cut projected spending for Medicaid, which provides health care for the poor, as well as food stamps, student loans and other social programs that Obama and Democrats have pledged to defend. ‘I was moreso trying to take the heat for a friend,’ The-Dream tells MTV News. By Rob Markman The-Dream Photo: MTV News Turns out it wasn’t The-Dream who sent the now-infamous “N—as in Paris” tweet from Gwyneth Paltrow ‘s phone, but the Love King still insists that his buddy did nothing wrong. “Well, we were there, of course. We were Patron’d out of our minds, number one. Number two, I was moreso trying to take the heat for a friend because I knew that the reaction was going to be silly,” The-Dream admitted to MTV News on the carpet for Vitamin Water’s Fader concert series in Hollywood on Thursday night. “I know what she meant; I know what she didn’t mean.” Last weekend, while onstage at the Throne’s much-ballyhooed Paris concert , Paltrow tweeted a pic of herself with a few friends and captioned it: “Ni**as in Paris for real @mrteriousnash (the dream) tyty, beehigh.” The tweet caused much controversy, sparking a debate over who should and shouldn’t be allowed to use the N-word. The-Dream says he knows that the actress didn’t mean for the tweet to be derogatory and also suggests that the issue isn’t so black-and-white. “We created a song and titled it like that. It’s one of the biggest songs out, especially [since] Jay and Kanye are two of the biggest rap figures,” he began to explain. “It’s like a catch-22, it’s like a trick, like ‘Yeah we’re gonna say it and we’re gonna sell it to you, but you can’t really use it and you can’t say it.” After Paltrow came under fire, the “Shawty Is a 10” singer came to her rescue and took the blame, claiming that he was the one who sent the message from Gwyn’s phone. Now he admits it was all just a cover-up. “I knew it was going to be silly from the beginning, so I just tried to jump to her defense,” he said to MTV News. “Unfortunately, people were bothered and I understand it to a degree, but you have to still understand that we give the word its own power.” The magnitude of Hov and Yeezy’s historic concert isn’t lost on The-Dream. He hopes that by performing “N—as in Paris” multiple times in Paris, the Throne can eventually change the complexion of the city. “If you know the culture there, then you know it’s not really bound to blacks in that type of a way. It’s soft and gloomy, but it’s not us,” he says of Paris. “So I understand the title of the song, I know what the movement is, and I extremely was touched after they performed in Paris 11 times because I know that’s going to affect the culture 10 years from now.” Was The-Dream justified in defending Gwyneth Paltrow? The talk of the Twitter-verse is that Chris Brown is begging for forgiveness from Rihanna in a new song released online. But is it true, and if so, how will she react? The lyrics to Brown’s single “Off That Liquor” (below) include the following line: “Them other girls ain’t got nothing on ya. Patron mixed with … that’s your recipe.” Rihanna is a known fan of Patron tequila, BTW. Also, the line “If it’s loving that you need,” from her 2005 hit “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want” is mirrored in Chris’ new song. He sings, “Come, if it’s loving that you need, from me!” Could it be that Chris, whose fans have been in the news as much as he has lately for their threats against Chrissy Teigen , is really pining for his ex this time? Maybe, maybe not … but it’s hard to believe this was penned for Karrueche Tran . He continues, “Whenever you’re ready, I’mma give you my heart,” to which he almost explicitly demands Rihanna to come back to him … and get naked ASAP. “Right now girl, baby come over, so we can make love,” he croons. “So when you’re leaving that party baby / Come on over, we can get it started baby.” Your move, Rih. Your move. Chris Brown – Off That Liquor
