Family films have been the story of the summer. Well, family films and sequels. In some cases, family films that are sequels. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters falls into that category. A sequel to 2010’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians , this new film surely hopes to find the same kind of success that Despicable Me 2 and Monsters U have had. Before we can see how they do at the box office, let’s check out what the Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters reviews have to say. Then you can compare them to the We’re The Millers reviews and go from there! There are plenty of bad films to get riled up about in the summer. “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” isn’t one of them. This is harmless tween-centric fun. — Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle For kids, Percy and pals are good company and the special effects are often fresh and eye-popping. There are further benefits for the few older fans on hand who love mythology. — Doris Toumarkine, Film Journal International You might think it would be endlessly awesome being the offspring of an Olympian god, but it seems like kind of a drag, really, for young Percy Jackson. — Bruce Ingram, Chicago Sun-Times Lerman is adroit at looking eager and battle-worthy but not too cocky in a film as much about character development as sword play. — Marsha McCreadie, RogerEbert.com In Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, choosing the dumbest character is a colossal task. — Connie Ogle, Miami Herald Tweens and young teens should be sufficiently distracted by the movie’s brisk pace and heroic mayhem – if they’re not too unnerved by its at times nightmarish imagery. — Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times

The new teen comedy Project X is being slammed by critics for being lewd, crude, and more concerned with showing snookers than character development…sounds perfect for Mr. Skin! Our Skin Skout saw an advance screening of the movie earlier this week, and confirms that producer Todd Phillips did remember to put bare skin on the guest list. We see a buffet of barely-legal boobage throughout the film as the female party guests go topless in a swimming pool and an inflatable playhouse. Bouncy, bouncy! And for all you Percy Jackson & The Olympians fans out there (all four of you), Percy Jackson co-star Alexis Knapp makes her nude debut when she takes off her shirt making out with a guy at the 56-minute mark. You bring the boobs, ladies, and we’ll bring the lube. See the trailer for Project X after the jump!

Sammi Sweetheart’s sister was none too pleased when the reality star borrowed skintight jeans and didn’t bring them back in one piece. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News When she was 17 years old, “Jersey Shore” star Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola chose the wrong night to sneakily borrow her sister’s favorite jeans. “Her pants looked better on me than my own pants,” Sammi insists on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” also featuring “Shore” castmates Vinny and Ronnie. While getting dressed to go out for a party, Sammi snuck into her sister’s room and snatched a pair of “super skintight” jeans. Unfortunately, she picked the wrong night to wear them. “I’m at this party thinking I look hot,” Sammi recalled. “And, you know, cops come knock on the door.” Fearing the cops and not letting the skintight jeans hold her back, Sammi and the rest of the partygoers booked it through the back door. Having escaped the house, Sammi challenged herself to hop a fence, only the pants weren’t so willing to keep up with her. “I go to jump over the fence, and I hear [a ripping noise]. Literally, my sister’s pants split.” Sammi made her way home, where she had to break the news to her sister that she had not only stolen the pants, but had managed to destroy them. “She was screaming at me,” Sammi said. “We were screaming at each other. Not a good time.” Now, years later, her sister doesn’t seem any less peeved. “They were my absolute favorite pair of jeans,” she said. “I would probably still be wearing them now.” Catch a “Jersey Shore” edition of “When I Was 17” — featuring Vinny, Sammi and Ronnie — Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. ‘A voyage on the ‘Dawn Treader’ is a trip hardly worth taking,’ Claudia Puig of USA Today writes. By Eric Ditzian Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes and Ben Barnes in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader” Photo: 20th Century Fox The winner of the award for the 2010 major theatrical release with the longest title goes to “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” It wasn’t even close. Sorry, “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”! Try again next year, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” Simply embarrassing, “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.” If only there were some correlation between title size and critical consensus: the longer the title, the better the reviews. Alas, that’s simply not the case. While “Deathly Hallows” wowed most critics, those scribes were less impressed with “Percy Jackson,” “Legend of the Guardians” and “Dawn Treader,” which arrives in theaters Friday (December 10). Here’s what they had to say about the third film in the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise. The Story “The story opens in World War II-era London as Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), living in their uncle’s home, yearn for old friends and adventure in the otherworldly kingdom. Who can blame them, with their snotty younger cousin (Will Poulter) spying and snitching on them? … Returning to Narnia through the portal of an enchanted painting, the three find themselves aboard the royal galleon Dawn Treader, with King Caspian (swoony Ben Barnes, now with a regal goatee and without his odd exotic accent) and the swashbuckling mouse Reepicheep. Their expedition to rescue missing lords and collect mystic swords will lead to encounters with a book that conjures magic spells, a shining star in human form, a titanic sea monster and the dread White Witch (the always-extraterrestrial Tilda Swinton in a brief, scary cameo).” — Colin Covert, Star-Tribune The Comparison To “Harry Potter” “[T]his is a rip-snorting adventure fantasy for families, especially the younger members who are not insistent on continuity. Director Michael Apted may be too good for this material, but he attacks [it] with gusto. Nor are the young actors overly impressed by how nobly archetypal they are; Lucy (who is really the lead) could give lessons to Harry Potter about how to dial down the self-importance. A universe may hang in the balance, but hey, it’s only a movie.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Religious Subtext “There is, as anyone who has read the books knows, a powerful Christian subtext that runs throughout these tales. It’s one that the films have never shied away from. The wise and powerful Aslan the lion, for instance — a beautifully rendered computer-generated character (voiced by Liam Neeson), who died and was resurrected in the first film and who reappears here — is an obvious Christ figure. Don’t worry. There’s nothing quite as heavy-handed as martyrdom here.” — Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post The Dissenters “The mission is haphazard. The fate of Narnia is threatened, but the reasons are vague, gaining little clarity as the movie progresses. While all three must confront their greatest temptations, these challenges are easily faced down, since a parade of scenes presents a revolving door of perilous situations without the appropriate mounting tension. It’s not surprising that Disney dropped the Narnia franchise after box-office sales for the second movie, ‘Prince Caspian,’ dropped dramatically. The first, 2005’s ‘Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ was the most enthralling, capturing Lewis’ whimsy and transporting viewers to a visually arresting fantasy world. In contrast, a voyage on the ‘Dawn Treader’ is a trip hardly worth taking.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today The Final Word “So Aslan says to Hogwarts: I’ll see your Harry Potter and raise you a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’ The eye-popping and entertaining ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ offers a merry seafaring jaunt together with plenty of adventures led by magically empowered kids. Director Michael Apted brings back a sense of the old-fashioned fun of the low-tech 1960s myths-and-monsters matinees, when no roiling sea ever failed to harbor a giant serpent — and men stood in the bows of ships facing peril with chins of iron.” — Kyle Smith, New York Post Check out everything we’ve got on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘You’ve got to put your mind outside of the room and embarrass yourself a little bit,’ Lerman says. By Eric Ditzian Logan Lerman Photo: MTV News Best Fight might be the most deceptive of all the MTV Movie Awards’ categories. What fans see up on the screen — those weapon-wielding brawls, knees to the groin and bloody-gash-opening body blows — certainly looks badass, what goes into creating them on set is quite often the opposite. And that, perhaps, is what make a cinematic fight truly great: you cringe at every punch, feel your stomach turn as the blood flows, you simply believe it, despite knowing it’s all make believe. It’s in this context that we approach this year’s Best Fight nominees , in particular Logan Lerman and Jake Abel’s throwdown in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.” “It was awkward,” Lerman laughed during an interview with MTV News. “I felt really stupid doing it. You’ve got to put your mind outside of the room and embarrass yourself a little bit and feel comfortable to be in the moment.” Lerman plays a dyslexic high school kid who discovers he’s actually the son of Poseidon and is pulled into a world-saving mission in which he battles snake-haired villains, nefarious demigods and a few terrifying beasts. The climatic scene — the one for which he’s nominated — sees him facing off against Abel on the rooftops, and in the skies, of New York City. They fly, they clash, they crash, they fly some more, until Lerman uses his powers to manipulate water and lay down some serious hurt. “That was about a month of filming just to do that one sequence,” Lerman explained. “We learned so much. We had to learn how to fly, be in wires and make it look good. Go down rooftops while having to swing at invisible lightning bolts being shot at you. It was a pretty crazy experience and I was completely blown away when I saw it onscreen. I’m so glad it got nominated — and pray that it wins!” His competition is stiff, and he’s most worried about Beyonc

‘Every day has been nothing but eating and lifting weights,’ the ‘Percy Jackson’ actor says of preparing to play a quarterback. By Josh Wigler Jake Abel Photo: Amy Graves/ Getty Images “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” actor Jake Abel has joined the cast of “I Am Number Four,” director D.J. Caruso’s adaptation of James Frey and Jobie Hughes’ forthcoming science-fiction novel of the same name, MTV News has learned exclusively. The sci-fi story focuses on nine aliens who survive the destruction of their home world at the hands of a ruthless rival species. The survivors flee to Earth and blend into their human surroundings in order to hide from the aliens who continue to hunt them. Abel will play Mark James, a high school football player who sees a social threat in Number Four, the young protagonist and new kid in school played by “Beastly” actor Alex Pettyfer. “Mark is a football player at the school and he’s skeptical of the new kid because he’s trying to move in on his ex-girlfriend,” Abel told MTV News in an exclusive interview. “He’s the high school jock who’s just loaded with insecurities. He masks them with his bravado and intimidation, but he’s threatened because this new kid is coming to school and there’s a lot of attention on him. A lot is happening around him.” Despite his experience as the villainous Luke Castellan in “Percy Jackson,” Abel’s antagonizing ways won’t intersect too heavily with the overarching sci-fi story of “I Am Number Four.” “Unfortunately, I’m not really getting involved with all of the crazy sci-fi stuff,” said the actor. “In a previous draft, there was a big fight scene that Mark was a part of and I was stoked for it. It was so wicked. Then I got a new rewrite, and suddenly Mark wasn’t in a fight anymore. I was really kind of bummed by that. It would have been a lot of fun!” That doesn’t mean Abel isn’t getting physical for the role. The actor revealed that he’s currently on a rigorous workout campaign to get into the kind of shape his football-playing character should be in. “Kind of at the last minute, D.J. Caruso reached out to me and said, ‘I want you to get big.’ So now they’ve got me [working with] a trainer, and now every day has been nothing but eating and lifting weights,” he laughed. “Luckily, he’s a quarterback, so he doesn’t have to be huge!” He’ll have to get into that idealized shape quickly, as Abel said he begins filming his role on June 9. Asked what he found the most appealing about “I Am Number Four,” the actor revealed: “What attracted me to it was D.J. Caruso, hands down. That’s what really made me want to do this. I think he’s really talented and has potential to be phenomenal. When we did the reading process for the audition, the notes that he gave me, we kind of spoke the same language. I’m really excited to see how he handles the situation on set.” Abel joins a growing cast, including the previously mentioned Pettyfer as Number Four, Timothy Olyphant as his guardian Henri, Teresa Palmer as the alluring Number Six and Kevin Durand as an alien antagonist.
