Shamone!…Not Stirred: Michael Jackson Was Supposedly PRESSED To Play James Bond

Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage Some Folks Weren’t Here For It Before any Idris Elba talk, the first Black James Bond could have been Michael Jackson . According to  Metro , the famous celebrity agent Michael Ovitz spilled all the details in his tell-all memoir  Who Is Michael Ovitz.  Back in the 1980s Michael pleaded with Hollywood bosses to be the next 007. It all started with a meeting at Ovitz’s home where Michael told him and Ovitz’ business partner Ron Meyer that he wanted to be “the star of an action movie.” Ovitz and Meyer couldn’t keep a straight face. Ovitz says the situation was made even more comical when Michael’s hat fell into a dish of guacamole. Michael tried to continue and sell the idea of him playing bond, but Ovitz and Meyer where still all laughs as the blob of guacamole was sliding down Michael’s hat. “Then the blob fell off, and Ron totally lost it. I cracked up, too, and Michael stalked out. I found him and explained for 15 minutes that we hadn’t been laughing at him,” Ovitz writes in his book.  “Finally, Michael’s face cleared. ‘OK, Ovitz. OK,’ he said. ‘But I want to play James Bond.’ I am proud to report I didn’t laugh, this time.” Ovitz then had to explain to The King of Pop that he wasn’t the best fit for the role of Bond, which has been played by actors like Sean Connery , Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan . Ovitz argued that Michael was “thinly built, you’re too sensitive, you won’t be credible as a brutal block of stone.” Obviously, by the end of it all, Michael did not get the role of 007. Idris Elba was rumored to be our first melanated British agent, but it seems he’s shut all that down. Back in August he tweeted out “don’t believe the hype” after he jokingly tweeted , “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba.” It seems Brother Bond will have to hold off a little while longer.

For Your Ears Only − Ranking The 22 Bond Theme Songs From Worst − Sorry Jack and Alicia! − To Best

Despite the silliness, sexism, and let’s face it, more than a handful of bad movies,  James Bond has endured as a franchise for 50 years because deep down inside, all of us, at one time, wanted to be spies, and as anyone living vicariously through the movies knows, a good spy needs a great theme song. For better or for worse, presented below are all 22 James Bond title songs and sequences, ranked in order from worst to best. Get your martinis and Walthers ready, ladies and gentlemen… 22. Quantum of Solace I’ve got nothing against Jack White or Alicia Keys , but yikes. This sort of mash-up is just not what James Bond is about. The grating production and completely asynchronous arrangement would be irritating as a standalone song: in a Bond film it’s borderline insulting. The visuals aren’t too great either, and look like some sort of digitally upgraded B-roll from The Mummy Returns . 21. Die Another Day Fans said goodbye to Pierce Brosnan in 2002, and it’s hard to determine exactly how many films he overstayed his welcome by. Rest assured, however, that Die Another Day will go down in history as one of the worst Bond films of the modern era, and the cookie-cutter, auto-tuned, glitchy mess of a title track by Madonna (speaking of stars who overstayed their welcome…) isn’t going to be fondly remembered any time soon, either. 20. The World Is Not Enough It’s hard to tell when performers began hoping a James Bond film would get them exposure rather than the other way around, but it’s safe to bet that it was well before Garbage performed the title track to 1999’s The World is Not Enough , since I imagine the bulk of kids in the theater went “who?” when the phrase “title song performed by Garbage” flashed across the screen. Still, the song is serviceable, and the sequence impressively slick. 19. Moonraker Ugh. Poor Shirley Bassey deserved better than this. After having her name attached to one certifiably classic and one so-so Bond film, Moonraker had to go and mess with the program. Clearly the producers insisted that Bassey drop the completely unmusical phrase “Moonraker” somewhere into the track, and it’s laughably bad. I would have just turned in a new cut of Goldfinger with the titles swapped out, but that’s why I’m not in charge of such things. 18. For Your Eyes Only This song and sequence are notable only because they ushered James Bond into the 1980s with plenty of appropriate glam and glitter, and because Sheena Easton appeared in the opening sequence. Otherwise there’s not much else to say. 17. The Living Daylights Remember A-Ha, better known as “that Norwegian band who did Take on Me”? Well, they had another hit song two years after their award-winner: the theme to Timothy Dalton’s on-screen debut as James Bond. It’s a nice synthed-out dance number, perfect for 1980s 007, but the visuals look like the director just turned on the camera, told the naked girls to writhe around, and then went to lunch. A little effort, people! (Bonus factoid: Joe Don Baker appears in this film, many years before his turn as a CIA operative in Goldeneye ).

James Bond Goes Gun Barrel Chic in First Teaser Poster for Skyfall

While the first trailer for James Bond pic Skyfall won’t hit until next week (!), official site 007.com has a treat in the form of a teaser poster for the November release. And while there’s precious little to glean from the black and white composition, there’s something surprisingly compelling in the simplicity of Daniel Craig , front and center, striding towards us from inside the Bond gun barrel . The juxtaposition of what looks like a drainage tunnel with Craig’s dapper, Tom Ford-tailored coolness gives us the sense that he’s unafraid to walk into the world’s dirtiest, grimiest underbelly in his fancy lad haberdashery. What’s more: He’s not shooting at us in the classic Bond gun barrel scenario, which traditionally envisioned the suave spy aiming and firing at the camera; look at his placement and you see he is the bullet. By my count this is the first of the Craig Bond flicks to use the iconic gun barrel motif in its poster designs; some form of it was employed here and there in the Bond films of Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan, though not so much in the artwork of the golden era of Bond (i.e. the Connery-Moore years). That said, this 1980 German re-release poster from the O.G. Bond pic Dr. No utilized what you might consider a variant of the gun barrel motif. (Side note: Is there another gun in Connery’s pocket or is he happy to see us?) Skyfall hits theaters November 9. [via 007.com ]

Rosie O’Donnell Worries Lindsay Lohan Will Die Like Whitney Houston

Rosie O’Donnell is not holding back in her strange crusade against Lindsay Lohan , saying if she doesn’t change her life, she could die like Whitney Houston. Rosie went back on Today show this morning to expand on why she believes LiLo should not have been cast as Liz Taylor in an upcoming Lifetime movie. Or any acting role, for that matter. O’Donnell suggested Lindsay is heading down a similar path as the late, great Whitney Houston , and can only be saved if she takes time off from showbiz. The ruthless Hollywood machine is slowly killing Lohan, Rosie feels, and she says feels obligated to speak out about the 25-year-old actress because: “Watching Whitney Houston’s funeral I recall thinking, ‘Why didn’t more people say what they knew?’ We all knew. We watched Being Bobby Brown – it was like watching Sid and Nancy … they were people in the throes of addiction.” “All anyone cared about was that the show was getting ratings. To look at Lindsay Lohan, you can’t help but feel for her … and I do not think she’s untalented, I think she’s quite talented. But this is a dangerous situation.” What do you think? Is Rosie totally off base or should she zip it? Lindsay has brushed off her attacks , but might she be better off heeding the warnings? VOTE: Whose side are you on?

On DVD: Getting to the Bottom of Roman Polanski’s Ghost Writer

Even as Roman Polanski seemed destined to stand trial , finally, for having champagne-&-Quaalude-leavened sex with a 13-year-old 30 years ago, he was polishing up his 18th feature, The Ghost Writer , about a famous man who cannot leave his house for fear of being extradited. Polanski’s sense of isolation and bitterness seeps throughout the new film, for better or for worse, and you cannot be blamed for wondering if a Polanski biopic is inevitable (starring Simon McBurney!), preferably directed by the man himself. The intrigue!
