E! Writer: ‘True Blood’ Rape and Murder ‘Highly Ironic,’ ‘Great Fun’

E! Online ” The Awful Truth ” columnist Ted Casablanca on Aug. 21 called the graphic depictions of sex and violence on HBO’s vampire drama “True Blood” “highly ironic” and promoted the show as “great fun.” Casablanca defended the show on Fox News Channel’s “Geraldo at Large” in a discussion with host Geraldo Rivera and Culture and Media Institute Assistant Editor Nathan Burchfiel. The debate was sparked by the controversy surrounding a recent Rolling Stone magazine cover that depicted “True Blood” stars naked and covered in (fake) blood. Burchfiel pointed out that while the shows originate on premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime, many “worst-of” clips are available online within hours of broadcast, and many popular shows like “The Sopranos” and “Sex and the City” have found their way onto basic cable via syndication, a likely future for “True Blood.” “It’s highly ironic, Geraldo,” Casablanca said of the show, adding, “It’s a highly intelligent, very clever indictment of the very conversation that we’re having right now and it’s an allegory to our times.” Burchfiel questioned that characterization. “Highly clever and ironic? They’re depicting murder and rape as if it’s something worth being glorified. I mean there was an episode just this season where one of the main characters literally turned a woman’s head around 180 degrees while he’s violently raping her. ‘Oh, it’s ironic. Haha.’ It’s digusting.” “Where do we stop writing things off as simply ironic instead of sewer diving?” Burchfiel later added. Casablanca suggested opposition to the show’s graphic nature was a result of homophobia. “I guarantee you that if none of those vampires were gay vampires, we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Casablanca said. “What’s upsetting so many people is that a lot of the vampires are gay.” Rivera didn’t buy that argument, and neither did Burchfiel, who asked, “Who was talking about them being gay? It has nothing to do with that.” Casablanca was correct in asserting that many of the show’s vampires are gay. The depiction of gay sexual violence has been similar to the depiction of heterosexual violence. In a recent episode, a main character murdered an enemy during while engaging in gay sex. “Certainly that heterosexual sloppy scene we just saw was not gay,” Rivera said referring to clips shown during the discussion.” At the end of the segment, Casablanca recommended “True Blood” to viewers saying, “It’s great fun.”

Bozell Column: Hugh Hefner’s Deep Self-Love

Hugh Hefner, America’s most celebrated and legendary pornographer, has less and less reason to celebrate. His Playboy magazine empire is crumbling — he may even be bought out by competitors — and his prototypical leering pose with girls young enough to be his great-granddaughters is now just plain creepy. His 2009 Christmas card featured 83-year-old Hefner standing between two 20-year-old twins who are his newest live-in girlfriends. Each was wearing a pink tank top with “Hef” painted on it in white. Hefner’s women are forever the plastic toys under his tree. Into this sad picture comes documentary filmmaker Brigitte Berman with a gushy new two-hour infomercial titled “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel.” How gushy is it? Washington Post critic Michael O’Sullivan found “the Hugh Hefner in this movie is Thomas Paine, Martin Luther King Jr., Mohandas Gandhi and William Kunstler all rolled into one.” In fact, Berman is so in love with her subject’s cultural and political influence, she told one interviewer that when the news came out that Martin Luther King Jr. had cheated on his wife, Coretta, “that never affected ‘I have a dream,’ so I found it really curious” that Hefner couldn’t be seen more as a civil rights hero and less as a seedy porn king. In the film, Hefner is obsequiously compared to King. Newsman Mike Wallace suggests he paved the way for President Obama, and all that hope and change. Bill Maher even compares him with Jackie Robinson, as the pioneer who took all the arrows. Trying to compare breaking the color line in baseball with being the first to publish the comic strip “Little Annie Fanny” is a bit of a historical stretch. Hefner is so full of himself that he’s made piles and piles of now-yellowed scrapbooks of his career. Most of the film is Hefner paging through his scrapbooks, dictating to his smitten documentarian how he wants his legacy defined. This film really looks like Hefner puffing up his own reputation before he loses his power to define it — a last shill and testament. There is, in its long, fawning two-hour parade, some tiny breaks for conservatives Dennis Prager and Pat Boone to get a few words in edgewise, but that’s wiped out by the sugar high Hefner’s giving himself in this film. This man even wants to deny that he fits the term “pornographer.” The dictionary defines pornography as “the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement.” Boone declares of Hefner that “of course, he’s been a pornographer from the beginning.” That is true, and commonsensical — but in this film, also somehow a controversial assertion, an assertion set up for a rebuttal, of sorts. Actor James Caan rebuts — the way a Playboy defender knows best — by saying there were always a lot of beautiful girls at the Playboy mansion. Debating really isn’t their strong suit. Just pushing the sex is. Hefner wants to be known not simply as the nation’s Sherpa to Shangri-La, but as the intellectual exponent of “The Playboy Philosophy,” which one of his toadies insists was an incredibly popular part of the magazine. Tony Bennett also lunges to the laughable conclusion that men read the deep and literary articles after achieving sexual satisfaction. In other words, that the centerfolds were the foreplay to an evening of higher education. This notion of Hefner as self-delusional sage is exposed in a brief clip from a 1966 interview with William F. Buckley on “Firing Line.” While Buckley calmly declares Hefner’s out to “annul” the moral code, Hefner attempts to claim he was not rejecting or attacking monogamy, which is quite simply lying. In his own life, Hefner quickly set aside his wife and daughter so he could begin his career in corrupting the souls of America. He has been an enormously influential man. As Boone says in the film, he did the most to entrench the maxim “If it feels good, do it” — no matter what the wreckage. The filmmaker loses her spell of adoration only once, where a 1979 centerfold siren, Vicki Iovine, discusses how Hefner was “cute” in love, but it was always an “adolescent” love that didn’t last. Love has eluded him, except as this film repeatedly reminds us, his own deep self-love. Hefner no doubt ends where the film begins, with the tribute of Gene Simmons, leader of the silly ’70s rock band KISS, who insists any man would give his left testicle to live the life of Hugh Hefner, at age 20, age 50 or age 80. But Hefner at 84 is just a dirty old man living out a threadbare satin cliche. The Washington Post critic granted him his liberal bona fides, but also found the sadness in “this Peter Pan with Viagra who never grew up.”

Roseanne Barr: Republicans ‘Cherish the Freedom to Have Sex with Small Children’

Eccentric comedian and former talk show host Roseanne Barr claimed on her blog July 8 that Republicans are avid kiddie porn viewers who like to have sex with young children. The liberal activist and comedy queen was blogging about sicko children’s author K.P. Bath, who was just slapped with a six years prison term for child porn possession last week. In a item titled ” typical republican child porn consuming geek ,” Barr posted a mug shot of Bath and wrote that he was “a typical republican who loves reagan and palin and despises the ‘nanny state’ and socialism.” “[K. P. Bath] cherishes the freedom to have sex with small children, as all [R]epublicans do,” Barr continued. She then added, in parentheses, “just kidding, sort of.” Barr, who pals around with Michael Moore and Code Pinkers, has become known for scribbling bone-headed political commentary on her personal blog. In April, she blogged that Catholics who take their children to church should lose custody of their kids, and in 2008 she referred to Israel as a “NAZI state.” Despite her nutty, and often grammatically incorrect rantings, some media personalities have still given Barr air time. Last December she was interviewed on the “Joy Behar Show” on CNN Headline News, where she claimed Sarah Palin was a “slave to right-wing men.” She’s also appeared on ” Real Time with Bill Maher ” and ” Jimmy Kimmel Live .”

Portuguese Playboy Depicts Jesus Observing Sex Scenes

Marking the death of an atheist by depicting Jesus Christ in sex scenes might seem like a non-sequitur. Somehow, it made sense to the Portuguese edition of Playboy magazine. The magazine features an actor portraying Jesus in at least four pornographic photos, including the cover, where he cradles an apparently dead – and bare-breasted – woman. Another photo depicts Jesus watching a lesbian kiss, while another shows him observing a topless woman reading a book. The images are reportedly meant to commemorate the death of Portuguese author Jose Saramago. He wrote, among many other books, “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ,” which ” explored the psychological motivations  that led Jesus to become a prophet.” Saramago  later wrote  that the controversy around the book led him to move fromPortugal to the Canary Islands. It’s not the first time an international edition of the “men’s magazine” has caused a stir by depicting a Christian figure. In its  December 2008 issue , the Mexican edition featured a model dressed – barely – like the Virgin Mary The U.S. edition of the magazine raised the ire of political conservatives in 2009 when it published  an article by Guy Cimbalo  in which he described the violent sexual acts he wanted to commit against conservative women, calling the acts a “hate f***.”

SEC Employees Were Masturbating to Kiddie Porn While Your Economy Tanked [Finance]

Over the past two years, more than a dozen Securities and Exchange employees and contractors have tried to view pornography on government computers at least 8,273 times. Here’s what they were looking at while the global financial system cratered. The Washington Times broke the story of the SEC’s porn problem , which became the subject of numerous inspector general investigations, last month. And Dealbreaker subsequently published one report of an inspector general investigation into an SEC regional supervisor who viewed transvestite porn at work as stress relief. Now we’ve obtained reports of 16 investigations into porn-surfing by SEC employees and contractors (one of them is a woman!), including one man who said his daily porn viewing at work was limited to “no longer than an hour and a half a day.” The man told investigators that his porn habit grew out of looking at photos of men in bathing suits, which is sometimes known as “gateway porn”: It’s unclear from the investigation report precisely what the man did (or does) for the SEC, but its clear from the context of an interview transcript that he attended graduate school and works in a professional capacity. Two video files found on his computer were referred to the FBI because investigators suspected that the men depicted having sex in them were underage: Anyway, here’s the full list of sites referenced in all the investigations. Enjoy!
