Mike Pence on Hamilton: That’s What Freedom Sounds Like!

It doesn’t seem possible, but this weekend, America is loving Hamilton just a little bit more than it already did. And that’s because, on Friday night, Hamilton told Vice President-elect and notoriously terrible human being Mike Pence. They expressed their fears that he wouldn’t protect all the people in this country, but they expressed those concerns with respect and kindness. Donald Trump, Pence’s bestie, was deeply offended, and he called for an apology , but Pence himself? He was pretty cool with it. Mike Pence on Hamilton: I’m Not Offended! Pence went on Fox News Sunday, and towards the end of the interview he was asked about the Hamilton fiasco. He said that he and his family “really enjoyed” the show, and that it was an “incredible production,” and that it was “a real joy to be there.” With tickets sold out for pretty much the rest of eternity, yeah, we imagine it’s be a joy to be there. Then, as hilarious yet embarrassing as it is, Pence said that he did hear some boos as he took his seat, but “I nudged my kids and reminded them that’s what freedom sounds like.” He said that he did hear the speech, and “I wasn’t offended by what was said.” He added that “I’ll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it.” Pence went on to give a mini-speech, in which he said “I know this is a very disappointing time for people that did not see their candidate win in this national election.” “I just want to assure people that what President-elect Donald Trump said on election night, he absolutely meant from the bottom of his heart.” “He is preparing to be the president of all of the people of the United States of America, and to watch him bringing together people of diverse views, bringing together people that differed with him strongly, seeing him talk to leaders around the world …” “I just want to reassure every American that in the days head, I’m very confident,” he said. “They’re going to see President-elect Donald Trump be a president for all of the people, and we embrace that principle and we’re going to work hard to make that principle every day that we serve.” Nobody wanted to hear all that nonsense, so he was asked if he wanted to hear an apology from the Hamilton cast and crew. “As I said, I would leave that to others whether that was the appropriate venue for that,” he answered. So all this sounds pretty coached, right? Or at least like he coached himself to play it cool. If theatre-goers booing at him was “what freedom sounds like,” then wouldn’t the actual speech also be what freedom sounds like? Hamilton Cast Delivers Speech to Mike Pence Why not just stick with that instead of the whole “I’m not going to say that it hurt my feelings, but if other people think it was really mean of them, then that’s cool” bit? But hey, at least he said that he wasn’t offended, right? And he very willingly admitted that Hamilton is an absolutely amazing show. It’s more than what Donald Trump did. Yesterday, after the news of what happened began circulating, Trump tweeted “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!” “The Theater must always be a safe and special place,” he wrote. “The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!” He must have really been torn up about it all, because this morning at 6:22 AM, he tweeted “The cast and producers of Hamilton, which I hear is highly overrated, should immediately apologize to Mike Pence for this terrible behavior.” “Highly overrated”? Oh, Donald, everybody knows you’re a fool , but this is a little much, don’t you think? Electoral college, come get your boys. They’re not doing so hot. Protest Pays Off: Trump’s Name Scraped Off Property After Building Residents Petition For Removal

Donald Trump’s Name Removed From His Own Property Remember when we told you that residents in Trump-owned high rise “Trump Place” were so embarrassed to have the now President-elect’s name emblazoned accross their homes that they were petitioning to have it removed ? Welp, they were successful. Workers were spotted taking down the gaudy gold “Trump Place” letters from one of the three buildings on the Upper West Side of Manhattan early on Wednesday morning. And residents couldn’t be happier. According to Huffington Post , residents just felt like the name put too much extra on their lives when all they want to do is get home from work and put the groceries away. “It’s nuts that we’re now living in a place that is advertising values that none of us believe in,” petition co-author Linda Gottlieb told CNBC. The petition cited Trump’s “appalling treatment of women, his history of racism, his attacks on immigrants, his mockery of the disabled, his tax avoidance, his outright lying,” that the name insults many of the minorities and immigrants who work in the building, and that the naming deal increases Trump’s net worth. The three buildings were under contract to bear Trump’s name for a time, but that contract has ended, according to Marty McKenna, a spokesman for the buildings’ landlord, Equity Residential. The buildings will now be called simply by their Riverside Drive street addresses instead. Hey, as long as the people who pay the rent (and actually bother to pay their taxes) are happy, then that’s all that matters, right? Getty/Google Maps

Obama Touts Fulfilled Iraq Pledge, But Withdrawal Deal Was Set Up by Bush

President Barack Obama told disabled veterans in Atlanta on Monday that he was fulfilling a campaign promise by ending U.S. combat operations in Iraq “on schedule.” But the timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops in Iraq was decided during the Bush administration with the signing of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) by U.S. and Iraq officials on Nov. 16, 2008. The Iraqi parliament signed SOFA on Nov. 27, 2008. The agreement , which had been in negotiations since 2007, set a timetable calling for most U.S. troops to leave Iraqi towns and cities by June 30, 2009, with about 50,000 troops left in place until the final withdrawal of all U.S. military forces by Dec. 31, 2011. “Today’s vote affirms the growth of Iraq’s democracy and increasing ability to secure itself,” President George W. Bush said of the Iraqi parliamentary vote in a statement on Nov. 27, 2008. “Two years ago this day seemed unlikely – but the success of the surge and the courage of the Iraqi people set the conditions for these two agreements to be negotiated and approved by the Iraqi Parliament.” At the convention for disabled vets on Monday, many of whom served in Iraq, President Obama took credit for ending the war. “As a candidate for president, I pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end,” Obama said. “Shortly after taking office, I announced our new strategy for Iraq and for a transition to full Iraqi responsibility. “And I made it clear that by August 31st, 2010, America’s combat mission in Iraq would end,” Obama said . “And that is exactly what we are doing – as promised and on schedule.” On Feb. 27, 2009 — one month after taking office as president — Obama in a speech said, “Let me say this as plainly as I can. By August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end.” On his campaign Web site, Organizing for America, however, it states that Obama would end the “war responsibly” within 16 months of assuming office, or by roughly May 20, 2010. The Web site reads: “Barack Obama will work with military commanders on the ground in Iraq and in consultation with the Iraqi government to end the war safely and responsibly within 16 months.” A Dec. 2, 2008 article in the Christian Science Monitor reported that President-elect Obama told Iraqi officials he supported the SOFA. “The security pact was the first such agreement since the invasion to outline specific terms for U.S. involvement in Iraq,” the article stated. “It was also the first in the region to be publicly debated and approved. Iraqi leaders backed the agreement after reassurances from President-elect Obama that his administration would not try to change the accord negotiated by the Bush administration.” The “surge” by U.S. troops in Iraq was announced by President Bush in January 2007 and involved the deployment of more than 20,000 additional soldiers. By mid-June, the additional brigades were in place and the surge began, focusing on al-Qaeda, Sunni and Shia foes in Anbar, Baghdad, Babil and Diyala provinces. By September, U.S. commander Gen. David Petraeus was able to report to Congress that “the military objectives of the surge are, in large measure, being met.” At the time Bush announced the surge in January 2007, then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said, “I personally indicated that an escalation of troop levels in Iraq was a mistake and that we need a political accommodation rather than a military approach to the sectarian violence there.” Then, in January 2008, after Bush’s state of the Union Speech and when it was evident that the surge had been successful, Obama said , “Tonight we heard President Bush say that the surge in Iraq is working, when we know that’s just not true.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who also opposed the surge, issued a statement on Monday this week giving Obama credit for ending the war in Iraq. “America’s brave men and women in uniform have done everything that has been asked of them in the war in Iraq; they have performed excellently,” Pelosi said. “Soon, our nation will begin a new chapter in this effort, ending combat operations on the schedule President Obama promised.” But in February 2008, Pelosi said Bush’s military strategy in Iraq had failed. “The purpose of the surge was to create a secure time for the government of Iraq to make the political change to bring reconciliation to Iraq,” Pelosi said on CNN’s “Late Edition.” “They have not done that.” In Atlanta on Monday, Obama praised the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, which will finally end, according to the SOFA agreement, on Dec. 31, 2011. “Already, we have closed or turned over to Iraq hundreds of bases,” Obama said. “We’re moving out millions of pieces of equipment in one of the largest logistics operations that we’ve seen in decades. “By the end of this month, we’ll have brought more than 90,000 of our troops home from Iraq since I took office – more than 90,000 have come home,” Obama said. Meet the Obama Death Tweeter Who Will Be Arrested Today [Threats]

Maybe not today, but very soon! His name is Jay Martin and he has spent the evening making sure everyone on Twitter knows he is “dead fucking serious” about wishing death upon Barack Obama . According to his Facebook page, Jay Martin graduated from Vatterott College last year with an IT degree and currently resides in Federal Way, WA. His About Me Page says: “Socially aware, Deep thinker, Artistic, Hip Hop Aficionado, free thinker, Funny Guy.” Oh, and he really, seriously, honestly, wants to kill President Barack Obama. (Thanks for the add, Jay!) It started with this dispatch from Martin’s Twitter account —we’re guessing inspired by tonight’s health care vote: After a bunch of users were like, WTF? Are you serious? Martin responded: But, like, seriously, Jay Martin. Do you REALLY want to kill Barack Obama? Please erase all doubt from our mind: Yikes, OK. Um. We’ll give you one more chance… You say you’re a “funny guy.” So this is just a really, really tasteless joke. Right? RIGHT!? Well! Hope you have a good lawyer. You will definitely need it. Although, Jay Martin is actually pretty excited about his impending legal troubles! You may say you “didn’t do anything wrong,” but the law—specifically 18 USC Sec. 871: —does not agree with you. Jezebel already went over this ! Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. When asked for comment via Twitter, Martin responded. Well, no. Honestly, we wanted to give you one last chance to say anything that might convince us and the authorities you are just some idiot kid pounding randomly on a keyboard rather than an idiot kid who is actually issuing serious death threats against the president via Twitter. We will remind you that this conservative blogger is currently under investigation by the Secret Service for saying way less. Hey, FBI, here’s your guy!
