Simmons College Launches Initiative To Recruit, Retain More Black Teachers

R epresentation is everything, especially in the realm of education. According to a study released by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Black students who have two Black teachers are 32 percent more likely to pursue their college education. Cognizant of the importance of representation, Louisville-based Simmons College has launched a new program as an avenue to produce more Black teachers, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reported. #SimmonsCollege Partners With Local Schools to Produce More Black Teachers https://t.co/xVozorIgAu #HBCUs — NewsToter.com (@NewsToter) January 11, 2019 The HBCU is teaming up with Jefferson County Public Schools for the initiative, the news outlet writes. As part of the program, graduates of Simmons College will have the opportunity to go through a 12-week accelerated summer program and eventually be placed at schools within the district. Organizers of the initiative hope to have graduates teaching in public schools by Fall 2019. The concept for the initiative came after the district realized there was a major gap between Black teachers and students. The district had a huge issue with hiring and keeping Black teachers. Although 35 percent of students in the county are African American, only 12 percent of the teachers are Black. The school district hopes to raise that percentage to 18 percent by 2020 through it’s Racial Equity Plan. “We believe we can be a catalyst in this area as it relates to our local school system and also across the state,” said Executive Vice President of Simmons College Dr. Frank Smith Jr. , according to the news outlet. There has been a major push to increase racial representation in classrooms. Last year in Connecticut, House representatives unanimously passed a bill to instruct the state’s Department of Education to recruit and retain more teachers of color. SMH: Georgia Teacher Asks Muslim 8th Grader If She Has A Bomb In Her Backpack

Somalian Man Angry His 12-Year-Old Was Asked If Her Backpack Had A Bomb SMH. This is so racist it makes our skin crawl. A Somalian eight grader was questioned by a teacher at Shiloh Middle School in Gwinnett County whether she was carrying a bomb in her backpack. According to AJC reports : Abdirazik Aden, who was born in Somalia, said that on Monday, his 12-year-old daughter was going to class when a teacher stopped her and asked what she had in her bookbag. He said his daughter told her books. The unidentified teacher responded by asking, her if she had a bomb in her bag? “My daughter wanted to know why she was asking her that,” he said. He said his daughter was upset when she called to tell him about the incident. He went to the school to see what happened and was told by an assistant principal that it was a mistake. “I was upset,” said Aden, who lives in Snellville and works as a truck driver and grocery store owner. “I was going to take my daughter out (of that school) “We are from Africa, we are Muslims, we live in America,” he said. “I didn’t teach my children to hate people or to think they are better than other people. I don’t want nobody to treat them like that.” We don’t blame him for being pissed. What would you do if it was your kid? Would you demand she be switched into a new class or a new school? Would you sue??? Here’s the school’s side of the story: Sloan Roach, spokeswoman, for Gwinnett County Public Schools, confirmed the incident happened. “The remark was not appropriate, but based on their conversation and investigation,” school officials don’t believe it was made with “ill intent,” Roach said. She said it was a regular teacher, not a substitute, who made the remark. The teacher was trying to get the students to put away their backpacks quickly and made the remark to the student that was basically, what do you have in there, a bomb? The school’s principal, Eli Welch, conducted an investigation and spoke with the teacher and the parent. At least they admit the remark was inappropriate. SMH. Flickr

“We Are Undermining Human Potential”: Sen. Cory Booker Rails Against Racial Disparities In Marijuana Convictions

“This is one of those issues, like the civil rights movement of the 1960s, where it should pull all Americans together to say enough is enough,” Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) told Vox. Retail recreational sales started in the state on Jan. 1, 2014. Consumers spent more than $36 million just in that month alone, according to Cannabist. This earned Colorado about $2.35 million in taxes. Statewide there is a 10 percent sales tax and 15 percent excise tax on recreational pot. All this money, by law, will be funneled into Colorado’s public school system, reports The Grio.
