Another Black Designer Finds A Carbon Copy Of Her Work For Sale Online

Source: Mireya Acierto / Mireya Acierto / Stringer When white designers replicate one another, intentionally or otherwise, they are called derivative, and uninspired. When they copy Black designers , they are rewarded for their efforts with the cloak of invisibility that shrouds Black women. This week Instagram learned of yet another Black fashion designer being forced to watch their creativity line the pockets of others. Fe Noel , who has been using her Caribbean heritage to create, elegant staples and lush statement pieces for years, posted side by side images of pants she designed for a previous collection with those presented by designer Ulla Johnson. Beneath the image she anticipated the fury of her followers writing, “I’ll let you be the judge.” Social media did not disappoint quickly pointing out that the similarities between the items appeared to be more than coincidental. That didn’t stop Net-A-Porter from charging $395 for them. This happens all the time and when everyone is forwarding the offending image or video to their timelines, they are rarely discussing how it occurs over and over. Source: Mireya Acierto / Mireya Acierto / Stringer These incidents take place because while mainstream retailers love to scope out the trends set by Black artists and consumers they don’t pay as close attention to the people behind them. The question of whether or not Ulla Johnson had seen Noel’s design prior to creating her pant is just one part of the equation. Whether or not any one at Net-A-Porter has ever bothered to look any the beautiful lookbooks presented by Noel season after season is another. In order for Black designers, Black editors, Black writers, Black stylists, and Black writers to flourish people have to quit stalling their research at their immediate circles. This is not someone who is obscure or unknown. She is a design powerhouse who is gaining hard won steam every season and she deserves to be seen and respected. Source: laven Vlasic/Getty Images / (Photo by Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images) It’s not hard to imagine that the buyer would have noticed if Johnson presented an option that was reminiscent of one of the many identical blonde Brooklynites lining the walls of Bloomingdales. They should be just as familiar with Black designers who are making strides. Noel has been featured in Vogue multiple times. She was one of three designers who teamed up with Lebron James and Harlem’s Fashion Row for a historic Nike collaboration. Her aesthetics is consistent and easily recognizable to anyone interested in paying attention. The work of the Fe Noels of the world should be celebrated beyond the black community because they’re stylish, they’re important, and more often than not they were probably here first. Editors Note: HelloBeautiful reached out to both Fe Noel and representatives for Ulla Johnson regarding the similarities in the designs. Neither party responded to requests for comment at the time of publication. DON’T MISS: Will Rihanna’s Deal With LVMH Be The Key To More Black Women In Fashion? Paola Mayfield Defends "Rights" of Anti-Vaxxers, Horrifies Fans

We all love Paola Mayfield. We stand by her when she’s mom-shamed by morons over her outfits or for taking breastfeeding pics. But the 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? star has made a statement that even her most devoted fans are struggling to defend. Pao is using her platform to champion the “rights” of anti-vaxxers to endanger their own children and countless others. Oh no. … Paola was asked what she thinks of anti-vaxxers and, taking to her Instagram Story, she shared her alarming opinion. “They have the right to choose what they want,” Paola asserts. “And,” she insists, they have a “right to do “what they feel is safe for their loved ones.” Astoundingly, Pao even thinks that these plague enthusiasts should be allowed to do so “without being judged!” That’s a hard no, Paola. Paola then does her best to convince her fans and followers that she is not speaking of herself, here. “I’m not anti-vax,” Paola claims. She has said this in the past, but the truth is … complicated, as we will explain. “But believe me,” Paola writes. “I will do my research before putting something in my little one!” On top of everything else, her use of the word research is drawing some unflattering responses. A couple of months ago, Paola was mom-shamed for vaccinating baby Axel . It was the correct thing to do and the responsible thing for her to do. Backlash from people prone to hysteria and vulnerable to misinformation campaigns was expected, unfortunately. But some of the ire wasn’t over Pao and Russ’ decision to vaccinate — not exactly. Some 90 Day Fiance fans were concerned because Paola noted that Russ had been reading a discredited book by a noted anti-vaxxer. At the time, Paola said that she and Russ would pick and choose which vaccines baby Axel would receive and when he would receive them. Spacing out vaccines against a doctor’s advice can endanger your child, especially in this era of outbreaks. And skipping some vaccinations without a medical justification? You know how you’re always supposed to take the entire round of antibiotics, even if you start feeling better? It’s like that. Unless there’s a pressing medical reason otherwise — like, one confirmed by your child’s actual doctor — you can’t just pick and choose. Medicine is not a buffet. Paola is a smart woman, and she’s been very careful about not giving specifics about her plans for Axel. But by expressing support for anti-vaxxers, she is making a clear statement: She values the feelings of anti-vaxxers more than the actual, real life safety of their children and of other children. You know how you don’t have to be a nazi to help the alt right — you just have to defend their right to advocate genocide? Well, anti-vaxxers are the same way. You can’t suppor their “right” to do harm in a vacuum. While we’re mentioning politics, we should note that there isn’t a clear political association with anti-vaxxers. They seem to be an alarming 10% of the population and are represented by only a few more percentage points on the conservative side. That’s a testament to Horseshoe Theory but also a glaring idictment of our education system. Real talk: children with cancer, compromised immune systems, or certain rare allergies cannot be vaccinated. Those kids need to be surrounded by people who cannot be carriers so that they will not die . Vaccinations are not a personal choice because they impact others. We love Pao, but she’s just wrong about this. View Slideshow: Paola Mayfield Mom-Shamed by Morons Over Breastfeeding Pic

Move Bih: 7 Celebs You Wouldn’t Want To Be Roommates With

Original post:

Source: Splash News / Splash News Having a roommate could be one of the best experiences in your life, or one of the worst. As millennials living in this economy, it’s pretty safe to say that if most of us either live with our parents or share a space with someone else. According to the Pew Research : In 1995, the earliest year with comparable data, 55 million adults (28.8%) lived in a shared household. In 2017, nearly 79 million adults (31.9% of the adult population) lived in a shared household – that is, a household with at least one “extra adult” who is not the household head, the spouse or unmarried partner of the head. Sharing a space with a stranger has become so common place that some millennials fear that they may never live on their own. @OhJuliatweets: “My friend from college lives in Paris and pays the equivalent of $900 USD/month for a 1-bedroom can you imagine living in a major city that isn’t fueled by bottomless greed and extortionately expensive to the point where you have to have roommates until you’re 40 wow hard pass/” @KaleBHorton: “Boomers love to tell millennials that they should be thrilled to work 14 hour days in exchange for the privilege of getting their ass kicked all day by impotent old dudes named either Jim or Mark and going home to a studio apartment with 19 roommates.” Don’t get us wrong, there are many perks to having a roommate. Obviously, one of the biggest perks is advantage of having a roommate is the ability to split the cost of rent and utilities, which means you’ll be able to afford a nicer, larger apartment than you could if you were living by yourself. You can also split the cost of other shared items, like groceries, and that’s always a plus. But picking the right roommate that aligns with your taste and ideals is the tricky part. Some folks just aren’t meant to share a space together for a long period of time. @Daylaco: This whole roommate thing is so dead, i hate sharing my space w others @cateblanchettt: The only time I hate sharing a bathroom with my current roommate is right now when she just went in there and I was about to shower Speaking of imperfections, people tend to think celebs are perfect people that never do anything wrong or annoying. But quite the contrary. We’ve put together a list of celebs that you probably love, but would never want to share a living space with. Hit the flip to check it out.

Chicago Police Raid Wrong House During 4-Year-Old’s Birthday Party

For children, birthday parties are supposed to be fun, innocent and filled with cake and balloons. But one lawsuit alleges that the Chicago Police ruined that moment for one African-American 4-year-old boy when they raided the wrong apartment and pointed guns at the stunned partygoers. According to the Chicago Tribune , the incident took place on Feb. 10 when more than a dozen CPD officers stormed into Stephanie Bures’ South Side home using excessive force and repeatedly shouting the f-word at the party, a federal lawsuit alleges. Apparently, the police were targeting a suspect they believed was in possession of the drug ecstasy, but they obtained an old address for him. Instead of finding their suspect, they found a crowd of 15 surrounding a birthday cake. Bures claims that her son was traumatized as were the other children and adults when the police barged into her home, without knocking and without providing proof of a warrant. She told CBS Chicago that she was handcuffed for repeatedly asking what was going on. “They manhandled me it took two officers to get the cuffs on me,” she said. Adding, “I wanted to know why were they there. Who are you? Show us a search warrant. “I asked for a search warrant, I guess, one too many times. And [the officer] was like, ‘Arrest her.’” Bures’ 7-year-old daughter, who once trusted the police, in that moment feared that the police were going to shoot her and her little brother. “To hear her say that, to worry about her or her brother getting shot by someone that is supposed to protect and serve them, it’s terrifying,” her mother said in a press conference on Monday. “It’s horrible.” Bures’ attorney, Al Hofeld Jr., told CBS Chicago that the suspect hadn’t lived at the address in five years and that this type of behavior only worsens the community’s mistrust of the police even more. “As long as they continue to do that, there will never be trust between citizens and the Chicago Police Department,” Hofeld stressed. Adding, that had the CPD took the time to do their research homework, this incident never would have happened. “My law firm took 30 seconds to do a person search and came up with [the suspect’s] most current address, which is on 83rd street nowhere near the property.” The Tribune reported that in addition to raiding the wrong home, the lawsuit also accuses CPD officers of “handcuffing several adults in front of the children even though no one disobeyed orders, ransacking the family’s home, taking hinges off the doors, prying open wall panels, flipping mattresses, throwing a TV to the floor, dousing the presents with hydrogen peroxide and pouring vodka over clothes.” CPD officials have yet to release a public statement about the lawsuit. Now, this isn’t the first time CPD has faced a lawsuit brought for raiding the wrong home. As the Tribune pointed out, just last June, the city settled for $2.5 million with the family of a 3-year-old girl who suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after an officer pointed a gun at her chest when raiding the wrong address. Michael Jackson: Child Abuse Documentary Amounts to "Public Lynching," Family Claims

Earlier this month, millions of viewers were stunned by the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly — which focused on the decades of sexual assault allegations against the singer. Now, it seems Michael Jackson is receiving the same treatment, via a four-hour documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival Friday night. The film, Leaving Neverland , focuses on the stories of two of Jackson’s accusers, Wade Robson and James Safechuck. As the doc has yet to secure a distributor and a wide release, it has thus only been seen by a select group of festival attendees. But if their reactions are any indication, Leaving Neverland may contain another scathing new information for the King of Pop to be forever stripped of his crown. “It only takes about two minutes into the four-hour documentary Leaving Neverland to realize that Michael Jackson’s legacy is never going to be the same again,” wrote Benjamin Lee in his review for The Guardian . “spoiler alert: Michael Jackson 100% sexually abused a lot of children,” tweeted IndieWire’s David Ehrlich. Shortly after the film’s release, Jackson’s estate issued a strongly-worded statement that was published in full on Rolling Stone ‘s website: According to Jackson’s reps, the film constitutes “the kind of tabloid character assassination Michael Jackson endured in life, and now in death.” The statement continues: “The film takes uncorroborated allegations that supposedly happened 20 years ago and treats them as fact.” Now, Jackson’s family is also hitting back with a statement that questions both the integrity and the intentions of the filmmakers. “The truth is on our side,” writes the family. “Go do your research about these opportunists. The facts don’t lie, people do.” The statement continues: “We are furious that the media, who without a shred of proof or single piece of physical evidence, chose to believe the word of two admitted liars over the word of hundreds of families and friends around the world who spent time with Michael, many at Neverland, and experienced his legendary kindness and global generosity. “We are proud of what Michael Jackson stands for. “People have always loved to go after Michael. “He was an easy target because he was unique. But Michael was subjected to a thorough investigation which included a surprise raid of Neverland and other properties as well as a jury trial where Michael was found to be COMPLETELY INNOCENT.  “Michael Jackson was and always will be 100% innocent of these false allegations.” The Jackson family’s statement can be read in its entirety here . Sexual assault allegations followed Jackson throughout his career, but none of the many accusers were able to help secure a conviction. The Jacksons have decried the film as a “public lynching” of a man who is no longer here to defend himself, while others feel that Leaving Neverland might finally provide a modicum of justice and peace of mind to the singer’s victims. Many are concerned about the effect the film might have on Jackson’s children, particularly his troubled daughter Paris, who reportedly refuses to watch the documentary. We’ll have further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available. View Slideshow: Michael Jackson Accused of Grotesque Child Abuse in New Documentary

Leah Messer Flaunts Relationship With Scandalous New Boyfriend on Instagram!

Leah Messer’s love life is a subject of constant fascination among Teen Mom 2 fans. For a while there it looked as though Leah would get back together with Jeremy Calvert , but when that reconciliation fizzled out, Ms. Messer quickly rebounded. These days, Leah is dating Jason Jordan , and while he seems to make her immensely happy, some fans have taken issue with the budding romance. Over the weekend, Leah documented her latest couple’s getaway on Instagram, and some fans saw the pics as an opportunity to reiterate their complaints. For one thing, Jason is much older than Leah (she’s 26; he’s 38). It’s not the kind of cradle-robbery that makes you want to alert the authorities, but it’s enough of an age gap to raise a few eyebrows. Especially since despite the fact that he’s pushing 40, Jason still seems to have quite a bit of growing up to do. Naturally, once word of the relationship went public, fans started doing their research and dug up everything they could about Jason. The most interesting thing they unearthed was a series of YouTube videos in which Jason played a character named West Virginia Meth Man. Now, as far as we know, Jason never dabbled in meth himself. And it appears he was just poking fun at some of the more, um … colorful residents of his home state. Still many found the skits to be in poor taste, particularly one video in which Jason (as Meth Man) commented on the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal. “Just want to make a little comment about Ray Rice,” quoth Meth Man. “Think he can go around punching women in the mouth, knocking them out cold. When I was high on meth one time I did that and nobody got mad. They just expect it out of me!” Now, that’s obviously not the most tasteful joke, but anyone accusing Jason of condoning violence against women would be willfully misrepresenting the bit. Should he have just refrained from joking about domestic violence at all? Probably? But the crux of the gag is that only the most repugnant individuals — your Ray Rices and your Meth Mans — would engage in such behavior. To be clear, the Meth Man routine isn’t particularly funny, and Leah is probably overjoyed by the fact that her boyfriend has retired the character. But a few seriously unfunny skits shouldn’t be a deal breaker — otherwise, Ariana Grande would have to dump Pete Davidson ! Zing! Microbiologist Is Convinced ‘Immortal’ Lobsters Made A Deal With The Devil

Source: Monalyn Gracia/Corbis/VCG / Getty Microbiologist @junius_64 hit Twitter with her expertise on why lobsters don’t die of old age, but instead die as victims of their own unfortunate genetics. Get into her fascinating theory below. [bong rip] [exhale] lobsters made a deal with the devil for conditional immortality and it backfired on them. you cannot change my mind — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 all of Twitter: “would you care to elaborate on that” me: pic.twitter.com/qxmmTLVzrR — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 ok so basically lobsters do not die of old age. the only thing time does to a lobster is make it bigger and bigger, if environmental conditions are good this is because they have a secret molecular trick over all of us senescent rubes: constant production of telomerase — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 this Grade-A Big Boy is massive- 22 lbs, easily 50 years old. but it isn’t even as big as the largest lobster ever caught, in 1977- 44 lbs, estimated at 140 years old pic.twitter.com/Z2dGVuAtdn — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 Telomeres are like shoelace caps on the ends of your chromosomes- a buffer zone, codes for nothing, keeps it from unwraveling look, here’s yours, the little white spots on these human chromosomes how do these things relate to our inevitable decline into death? here’s the deal pic.twitter.com/sD9yvIIHZV — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 It’s one sequence, over and over, for humans: TTAGGG every time your cells divide, they lose a little bit off the end of the telomeres, which fails to be replicated. At birth your telomeres are 11,000 bases long, when you’re old and gray they’re about 4,000 bases long — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 There’s something called the Hayflick limit, and that’s why you and I die When the telomeres reach a critical length, the cells just stop dividing pic.twitter.com/4HAUULd0fN — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 “fuck the Hayflick limit, I do what I want” is the motto of cancer, and the motto of lobsters because they produce heaps of telomerase. telomerase is a really nifty enzyme, it carries its own RNA template to build back the lost ends of the telomeres! pic.twitter.com/gWuIuM6jcZ — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 Humans make telomerase too. But we make less and less as we age. We’re coded to just let senescence and death happen, and a lot of people have a lot of theories why If you’ve got cells that constantly produce shitloads of telomerase and never stop, you’ve got cancer, my friend — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 as a teen I used to like Family Guy (dunk on me, I deserve it lmao) and what’s funny is, in that one episode when high-Stewie asked “what if the only reason we die is because we accept it as an inevitability”, he was kinda right our biology encodes death as an inevitability — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 Death is still an inevitability though, whether our biology encodes a plan for it or not entropy always comes for its due, and that’s what even lobsters must accept — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 lobsters still lose in the very end. Telomerase tricks buy time, they will never experience senescence- the decline towards death- but it still comes at some point that point is typically molting — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 Lobsters never age. they keep growing and growing and growing. but their skeleton is on the outside, and it isn’t exactly flexible. They need to molt and grow a new shell once they outgrow the old one this is a very, very energetically taxing and dangerous affair — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 Lobsters molt the easiest in mid-life. molting casualties are highest in the very young and the very old very young lobsters molt a LOT, because they’re growing a lot- 44 molts in their first year. this leaves them squishy and vulnerable, and is quite energetically taxing — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 An ancient lobster colossus may not have as many predator concerns during a molt, compared to the young’uns (still watch out for sea turtles tho) but the energy costs are what kills. Moving out of an enormous shell takes an enormous effort past a certain point they just can’t — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 at a certain point, the effort of moving out just cannot be mustered by their metabolism. it’s done. when a mega-lobster entirely stops molting, the game is drawing to a close at that point they’re trapped in their shells, which accumulate parasites and bacteria — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 I have not been able to find research on whether it’s disease or simply being squeezed in that kills in the end. I would love to talk to an actual invertebrate biologist on this stuff because it’s so fascinating — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 This research would be incredibly hard to accomplish because you would have to either raise or track a good sample size of 100-200 year old lobsters, which are extremely rare — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 I’ve also heard that some will simply die of exhaustion mid-molt, but lack the data on the relative proportions of all these fates — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 but yeah. it’s quite amusing, if silly and unscientific, to think of it in a poetic sense. It’s like lobsters have made a deal with the devil, and the devil always gets his due — labcoat lesbian @ NYC Pride + AC (@JUNIUS_64) June 21, 2018 Hit the flip for a short Q&A session.
