Rick Ross ‘Salutes’ Eminem After VMA Rehearsal

‘Seeing him in person brought his rhymes that much more alive to me,’ he says of Em’s Saturday night run-through. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Rick Ross got the girl, but he wasn’t afraid to give Eminem props. The Bawse got a major look at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (September 12), picking up host Chelsea Handler on his four-wheeler and driving out of the house. The night before the big show, Ross had the opportunity to play fly on the wall. He saw Eminem’s rehearsal of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” a full day before fans laid their eyes on it. “I actually had a chance to sit through the whole rehearsal yesterday, man, and got to watch Eminem rehearse and perform for the first time,” Ross said on the white carpet. “You know, I gotta salute him. I gotta take my hat off. He’s a dope lyricist. Actually, seeing him in person brought his rhymes that much more alive to me. I’m actually looking forward to seeing Eminem do his thing.” In the past, Ross has both challenged Slim Shady to a battle as well as said he wanted to collaborate with the Detroit rhyme icon. The Miami hitmaker did say that he and Em did not meet during the practice. “Nah, not at all,” Ross said when asked if they crossed paths. “I just played my position. Waited for my opportunity to rehearse. I wanted to take my hat off to commend a fellow MC.” What did you think of Em’s performance? Let us know in the comments! Drake Says Rat Pack Inspired VMA Performance

‘I wanted to get up there and look fly,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — You know you’ve made it when the chorus from your song is quoted on “SportsCenter.” You know you’ve made it tenfold when you have a highly anticipated slot at the MTV Video Music Awards . Drake has both, with “you fancy, huh?” permeating pop culture, and on Sunday, you’ll see him team up on the big stage with Swizz Beatz and a very special guest, Mary J. Blige, for his debut VMA performance. “All I remember is that VMAs in Vegas, in the hotel,” Drake said Friday afternoon (September 10) in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre. He had just finished rehearsing for a couple of hours. “I remember being at home … seeing Tyga perform with Wayne, and I was like, ‘Man, I gotta get my ball rolling. I gotta be there one day.’ It’s surreal, being on that stage.” And yes, Drizzy will be surrounded by several beautiful ladies and one lovely Queen. “Fancy” was originally slated to be a Mary record , before eventually making its way to Thank Me Later. Drake and the song’s producer, Swizz Beatz, decided to keep her vocals on the hook of the song. “Her vocals are what make it so sweet,” Drake beamed of having MJB perform with him. “What’s more classy, more fancy than Mary J. Blige? I’m not sure. She is the epitome of class, in my opinion. It’s more of a real theater production than it is a performance. It’s really a lot of acting.” If rehearsals are any indication, Drake’s performance will be reminiscent of the up-to-date Sinatra cool in his VMA promo spot . “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake recalled. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” Are you looking forward to Drake’s VMA performance? Let us know in the comments! Nicki Minaj Calls Drake Twitter Marriage ‘Mischievous’

‘Drake is just my little brother, and I kid with him all the time,’ Minaj says. By Shaheem Reid Drake and Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Nicki Minaj promises there were no “Drickis” born in the 24 hours she and Drake were “married.” This past weekend, Nick called into Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 and spoke to DJ Drama about a myriad of topics, including her recent Twitter marriage to (and divorce from ) her fellow Young Money rapper. “Drake is just my little brother, and I kid with him all the time,” said Nicki, who will be performing at this year’s VMA pre-show . “We were just being crazy. I think we were a little bit bored. There’s really never a dull moment. I wouldn’t say we were bored; I would say we were being mischievous. “I was doing an interview, and every day, I see some things written about me that aren’t true,” she added. “I wanted to give the blogs a bit of payback and put my own story out.” When asked if she were still single, Nicki coyly answered, “I’m always single. I don’t date boys. I don’t like boys. It’s true. I don’t change. I think boys are yucky, and that’s it. Nothing more to say.” When it comes to the kings of hip-hop, however, Minaj had plenty to say — especially when she’s on a track with them. Nicki recently appeared on the Kanye West/ Jay-Z collaboration “Monster,” which also guest-stars Rick Ross and Bon Iver. Minaj has gained a swell of support from fans who say she has the song’s show-stealing verse. “I’ve just been blessed to be on a song with two living legends. In my book, Jay and Kanye are icons, and I never in a billion years would have thought I would be on a song with one of them, let alone both of them,” she said. “I’m happy people think I murdered the record. It just feels exciting to be a part of that collab. Seriously.” Nicki also revealed that she has moved to Los Angeles and is still hard at work on her debut LP, Pink Friday. That means no days off — even on Labor Day. “I know a lot is riding on this album,” she said. “I wanna make everybody proud. There are some people that are rooting for me out there. I wanna go in.” What did you think of Nicki and Drake’s Twitter “marriage”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj Drake

Justin Bieber Vs. Jonas Brothers Hair-Off: ‘Camp Rock 2’ Stars Vote

‘Well, there are three Jonas Brothers versus one Bieber …,’ co-star Chloe Bridges reasons. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Demi Lovato told us recently that the littlest Jonas brother, Frankie, has swag like Justin Bieber . And as it turns out, the elder Jonas Brothers, namely Joe, Kevin and Nick, and Justin Bieber are all known for something they have in common, and we’re not talking about their bustling careers. We’re referring to their incredibly famous and all-important heads of hair. While Bieber is known for his signature swoop, the brothers Jonas are recognized for their curly mops. This fascinating paralell raised a question: Who has better hair, the Jonas Brothers or Justin Bieber? Their “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” co-stars weighed in on this battle for the ages. “I’m friends with the Jonas Brothers [and] I do have to see them later on, but I know that Bieber has this whole thingy, the swoop thingy,” Jasmine Richards pondered. “I’m gonna have to say Jonas Brothers only ’cause their hair’s great. … But Bieber … can I be in the middle?” Nick Jonas’ “Camp Rock 2” love interest, Chloe Bridges, compared the decision-making process on this issue to choosing a favorite summer sweet. “Well, there are three Jonas Brothers versus one Bieber. So I don’t know,” she explained. “They might win, however, they both have good hair. It’s hard to say. It’s like vanilla versus chocolate — do you like the straight or the wavy? It’s like ice cream flavors.” Anna Maria Perez de Tagle seemed to have the decision locked: “Oh, the Jonases, for sure! I mean, they all have different hairstyles, which is awesome,” she said. “Justin Bieber has the one hairstyle. For sure, the brothers!” Who do you think has better hair, Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos JoBros, Demi Lovato, More At ‘Camp Rock 2’ Premiere

Is Drake Dropping A New Album This Year?

Young Money’s Mack Maine says a quick album turnaround ‘makes sense’ for Drizzy, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ Getty Images The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive It was spring 1998. DMX was the hottest cat in hip-hop and released his SoundScan-murdering debut LP It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot. That winter, X came right back with another scorcher, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood. OK, speed up 12 years. We all know about Drake’s popularity. His debut, Thank Me Later, came out this past spring, and believe it or not, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Drizzy could come right back with another album just in time for Christmas. “Drake’s crazy,” Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News last week. “He’s doing a mixtape right now. He called me one night, like 2 in the morning. He has the intro done for the new album. We was discussing dates where he should come back. That’ll be soon. And this mixtape, he’s gonna put that out quick. His formula is crazy. He works fast. I can’t give the secret away to the formula. He’s a musical genius. The way he and [producer] 40 put things together is crazy.” When we asked Mack if Drake was putting out another LP before next summer, he simply said, “Real possible! What we discussed, definitely, what me and him discussed.” Such a quick turnaround between Thank Me Later and its follow-up is a simple case of supply and demand. “It makes sense,” Mack said. “Like DMX and those guys [at Def Jam]. They dropped two in one year. I think 50 [Cent] did two in one year. If it wasn’t a year, it was right around that time. [Drake’s] hot like that. Why not? Give them what they want.” When asked if Drizzy would have an album in the marketplace in time for it to be a stocking stuffer around the holidays, Mack Mizzle smiled and advised us to “expect the unexpected.” Regardless of when the new LP comes out, all signs point toward Drake’s R&B mixtape , It’s Never Enough, to come this year. There has been a smattering of Drake records popping up randomly on the Internet recently, such as “What If I Kissed You.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Lauryn Hill Explains Updating Her Classics At Rock The Bells

Jay-Z, Kanye West And Drake Are Chris Bosh’s Hip-Hop Dream Team

‘Those are the best three guys out right now,’ Miami Heat superstar tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z Photo: C. Flanigan/ WireImage Celebrity Favorites: Chris Bosh Chris Bosh belongs to the Miami Heat’s “big three” along with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. And when it comes to hip-hop, his dream team is already lined up. “Jay-Z, Kanye West and Drake,” the All-Star said without blinking. “Easy! Well, just the fact of Jay-Z’s longevity. And he can really rap. Some of his stuff from ’01 and The Blueprint is stuff I’m just now getting. Like, ‘Ohhhh, that’s what he meant. OK, I get that line.’ He was so far ahead in what he rapped about and what he did. I’m just now catching up. Kanye is super creative in what he can do with the beat machine. And his words, he’s more a passionate type of guy. He puts his feelings out there and doesn’t care what anybody thinks. Drake is the smooth guy. He’s gonna come in and sing. Plus Drake, we share something in common: We pretty much started our professional careers in Toronto. And I think those are the best three guys out right now.” Bosh, a native of Dallas, obviously has his ears tuned into hip-hop and what’s going on right now. “I pretty much grew up on hip-hop,” he said. “I’m aware of what’s going on. They’re making dance music in Dallas. Being from there, it’s different, because I’ll be in Toronto or Miami, and when I go home, it’s always a new dance. ‘The Dougie’ at one point. D-Town Boogie. There was always dances in Dallas ever since I was in high school. But now the younger generation is like, ‘Man, you don’t know how to do that?’ I’m like, ‘No.’ ‘You don’t know that song?’ So I always have to play catch-up.” Bosh also said coming up as a youngster, he never danced. “Nah. That wasn’t my thing. I hooped,” he explained. “I played basketball. I just did a two-step just to get by, and that’s it.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Usher Calls ‘Hot Tottie,’ Featuring Jay-Z, ‘Incredible’

‘Videos, we’re in the process of working on that as well,’ he tells MTV News of his Versus plans. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Usher Photo: MTV News Usher’s life is all about balance right now. We caught up with him at the World Leadership Awards earlier this month in Atlanta, and he gave us a glimpse into his busy schedule. “If it’s not philanthropy, it’s music,” he said at the event for his New Look Foundation, which just raised $150,000 for a mobile clinic that will go to Haiti. “If it’s not music, it’s making sure I got the kids and dropping them off. I’m like super dad right now. The tour is the next step. May do a little acting. I’m definitely in the process of producing a few things, but it’s staying busy. If it’s not fragrance, then it’s lifestyle. If it’s cars — I mean owning, not just driving — it’s a little bit of everything.” As far as his music goes, his latest song, the Jay-Z-featuring “Hot Tottie,” is in heavy radio rotation. The record — whose name is a variation on a hot toddy mixed drink — is just a taste of the heat Usher has to offer on his upcoming EP, Versus. “In terms of ‘Hot Tottie,’ it’s another incredible record that’s gonna be part of the re-release of Raymond v. Raymond [called] Versus, ” he said. “There’s a few more. You guys check it out. Videos, we’re in the process of working on that as well.” Versus is slated to drop Tuesday. Miguel Hopes To Get On ‘All I Want Is You’ Partner J. Cole’s Album

‘The album is what I would describe as being ‘eclec-tric,’ ‘ R&B singer tells Mixtape Daily of his own debut. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Miguel Photo: Jive Fire Starter: Miguel Miguel is bringing sex appeal and soul with his new video for “All I Want Is You.” The track features J. Cole, and the new singer said he’s more than willing to return the favor for the Roc Nation rapper. “I remember talking to [‘All I Want Is You’ producer] Salam [Remi] and him saying, ‘Just be honest,’ ” Miguel said about the song’s lyrics. “I’m excited about it. I didn’t get to be in the studio with J. Cole. I recorded the song, and Mark Pitts at Jive — who happens to be a part of J. Cole’s management as well — I remember the call. It was 3 o’clock in the morning, and Mark called me like, ‘Yo, it’s crazy! I’mma play it for Cole.’ He played it for him, and Cole said he liked it. I’m looking forward to getting on [Cole’s] forthcoming album, hopefully. Maybe.” Miguel dropped Mischief: The Mixtape awhile back, and it got picked up by hip-hop blogs such as 2DopeBoyz.com. The standout record was “Sure Thing,” which helped him get his record deal. “All I Want Is You” is the name of his debut album as well as his lead single and video. “The video was really dope,” he said. “The director worked with me on the treatment. It was really his concept on the treatment, but I sent him some references, and he did a really good job at putting it together and making sure it was smart, but it wasn’t too smart. We wanted to have some nostalgic qualities, a hip-hop base, but still wanted to give it an edgy flair.” Miguel said he’s been influenced by Prince and Queen but grew up listening to the kings of rap as well. “The album is what I would describe as being ‘eclec-tric,’ ” he said. “It’s in tone with keeping hip-hop as a base, because that’s what I grew up on, but including and infusing styles such as classic rock and funk. I think people will be excited to hear how we mix that together.” The All I Want Is You album comes out September 14. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
