Mac Miller Returns To Pittsburgh’s Blue Slide Park

Miller gives MTV News a tour of the ‘illest city in the world,’ including the park he made famous. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/Redferns PITTSBURGH — Some call it Steel City, others call it the City of Bridges, but Mac Miller simply calls his hometown “the illest city in the world.” After releasing his 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S., Miller set out and toured the world, spending more and more time away from home. It was that time away that inspired the name for Mac’s debut album , Blue Slide Park. Named after his favorite childhood hangout, Mac aimed to shine the spotlight on his city. After months of touring in 2011, the “Knock, Knock” MC invited MTV News to come out to a pair of homecoming shows back in December and gave us a tour of the ‘Burgh, starting, of course, with Blue Slide Park, a playground tucked inside the much-larger Frick Park. “Welcome to the world-famous Blue Slide Park,” Mac told MTV News, acting as our tour guide. If you aren’t from the ‘Burgh, chances are you didn’t quite catch the significance of BSP ‘s opening track, “English Lane,” but after a trip to the real-life playground, it all starts to make sense. “I was literally walking to Blue Slide Park and the album was almost done and I was walking to get some last-minute inspiration,” Mac said, explaining how the park’s adjacent street became the title for the #1 LP’s first song. “I walked by and was like, ‘English Lane would be an ill title for a song, that’s how I wanna open the album ,with a song called ‘English Lane,’ ‘ because that’s how you walk up to Blue Slide Park.” Granted, some of the scenery has changed, for instance, the slide isn’t quite as blue these days. “When I announced that I was coming out with an album called Blue Slide Park, some vandalizing kids dumped a bucket of red paint down the slide,” the 20-year old rapper said with some disappointment. Still, while walking through the famed playground and its surrounding area, the memories began to mount for Mac. There were his baseball days at Stan Lederman Field and the make-out sessions that followed his little league victories. “I was into girls in the fifth grade,” Mac said while showing off a low-key cove where he’d take his junior high school honeys. Now, when the breakout rap star returns to his old stomping grounds, word spreads quickly as fans flock to the neighborhood hangout in hopes for an autograph or a picture with Miller. Still, it all provides a certain comfort. Back in July, after Mac first announced the album’s title , he explained what it all meant to MTV News. “No matter what happens in life, no matter where you go, where you’re off to, what happens with the park, that slide will always be blue. That will always be Blue Slide Park no matter what,” he said. “You can go to New York and live for 10 years and become a huge business mogul and then come back to the ‘Burgh and no matter how much money you got, that slide is still blue.” Barring any vandals, of course. Check in with MTV News everyday this week as Mac Miller takes us back to the ‘Burgh and spotlights Pittsburgh vibrant hip-hop scene. Also tune into to ‘RapFix Live’ on Wednesday to see exclusive behind the scenes footage from Mac’s pair of December homecoming shows. Rick Ross Plans To Delay God Forgives, I Don’t

‘The date is still tentative because of my health situation,’ Ross tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting from Sway Calloway Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross appeared on Wednesday’s (November 16) “RapFix Live” to give fans an update on his health and the status on his fifth solo album, God Forgives, I Don’t, after suffering two seizures in October. With Maybach Music rapper Meek Mill at his side, Ricky Rozay confirmed that the December 13 release date for his album is subject to change because of the lull in his workflow. “The date is still tentative, December 13. [Because of] my little health situation, I had to postpone a lot of my groundwork,” Ross said. “And I feel like that’s important for artists like myself. “If I wanted to, I’m pretty sure I could still meet that date, but I think for the people, it’s more important [to lay groundwork] for when I get out there and look them in the face and touch them hands,” Ross said, explaining the likelihood of a delay. “We’ve just gotta lay ground for it, and I’mma keep y’all updated.” During his rest and recovery period, Ross had time to link up with Jay-Z for a new track, which is set to appear on God Forgives, I Don’t. “Just expect the biggest collabo we’ve ever made together. It’s just gonna make the project mean that much more,” he said. “Any time me and the Big Homie get together, you know I’m coming with my A-game, ’cause I wanna make sure the homie is impressed with whatever I’m coming to the table with — and he was. He blessed me, so y’all get ready for it.” Until Rick Ross finally releases God Forgives, I Don’t, he continues to heavily promote Ambition, the sophomore album from his Maybach Music artist Wale. Mac Miller Ignored Label Offers On Road To #1 Debut

‘We just really wanted to stick with our home team,’ Mac Miller tells ‘RapFix Live’ of Blue Slide Park. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mac Miller Photo: Getty Images What’s the first thing an artist does when he snags the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart? Well, if he’s Mac Miller , he plays James Brown’s “I Feel Good” — and why wouldn’t he? On Wednesday (November 16), the 19-year-old Pittsburgh MC landed the #1 album with his independent debut, Blue Slide Park. It’s the first time an indie artist has obtained the top spot with a debut since Tha Dogg Pound did it in 1995. To mark the occasion, Mac — who is currently out on tour — appeared on “RapFix Live” via Skype. “It’s crazy. I’ve been trying to take it all in,” Miller told Sway. “I’ve just been in constant motion, so I haven’t gotten a chance to really stop and realize how crazy this is that we got the first #1 in 16 years. It’s nuts, man.” Mac broke out in 2010 when he signed to Rostrum Records and then dropped his K.I.D.S. mixtape. Rostrum, which is most noted for signing Wiz Khalifa, is an independent label. Even though Wiz is distributed through Atlantic Records, Mac has no major-label affiliation — not that the majors haven’t been interested. But Team Miller wanted to do things on their own. “I never really got far enough to see an offer for real,” Mac said. “I got no hatred towards major labels or anything. I never got a chance to hear what they had to say. We just really wanted to stick with our home team and keep it in the family.” Miller’s manager and Rostrum Records founder Benjy Grinberg has been fending off offers for Mac. “They called Benjy and wanted to talk, but Benjy was just on some ‘We’re not trying to talk right now, we’re doin’ this independently.’ And we just left it at that.” The move paid off. Since Blue Slide Park was released November 8, fans have been snatching up copies both digitally and physically. “The numbers are cool — 144,000, that’s crazy. But whatever it is, the fact that I got a #1 album on my first try independently is just something that no one could ever take away from me,” Mac said. “I had fans tweeting me with pictures of nine albums that they bought.” Did you snatch up Mac’s album? Mac Miller To Drop LP Early If Fans Nab 100,000 Pre-Orders

If Mac gets 50,000 pre-orders, Blue Slide Park rapper will donate $50,000 to Make-A-Wish Foundation. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Mac Miller sure is impatient. Yes, he has already secured a November 8 release date for his independent debut album, Blue Slide Park, but that isn’t enough for the Pittsburgh MC. With the album now available for pre-order on iTunes and other digital outlets, the “Donald Trump” rapper has devised a three-tier plan that will give his fans the ability to push up the 16-track LP’s release. “I want to get my fans my album. We have a date, November 8. Blue Slide Park, it’s coming out, but I would love it if we could get it out earlier,” Mac told MTV News. “So what we’re doing is, we’re gonna go hard with the pre-orders.” The expectations are high, but if Mac can get 25,000 pre-orders of BSP he will release the album’s title track to hold fans over. If Miller surpasses 50,000 pre-orders before the album drops, he will donate $50,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Reaching 25,000 or 50,000 won’t be easy, but should Blue Slide Park hit 100,000 pre-orders before November 8, Mac promises to release the album immediately. If they got 100,000 by the end of this interview, the album would come out right after, Miller promised. “I just want people to get the album as quickly as possible,” he said. “So if they go hard and go crazy — ’cause you never know what my fans will do, they’re so unpredictable — if they go hard and get 100,000 and make history, I’m just gonna give them the album right away because that’s what they deserve and that’s what they would deserve anyway.” Miller is currently on tour in support of the album, which he has dedicated to his favorite childhood park, known most for its blue slides. “Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at,” Miller told MTV News about the album title’s significance. “Being 2, going down slides and then being 6, playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older, coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer.” Will you pre-order Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Mac Miller

Mac Miller Recruits Bro For Blue Slide Park Art

‘I knew I wanted to do something with it that was more than just a picture of me,’ Pittsburgh MC tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Oh to be a kid again! For his debut album, Blue Slide Park, Mac Miller is paying homage to his childhood stomping grounds of Pittsburgh. The LP cover is a simple, child-like rendition of the playground, drawn by the rapper’s (born Malcolm McCormick) older brother, whose first name is actually Miller. “I knew I wanted to do something with it that was more than just a picture of me,” Mac told MTV News. “Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at,” Miller explained to us about the album title’s significance. “Being 2, going down slides and then being 6, playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older, coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer.” When Mac and his Most Dope team were seeking inspiration for the artwork, they consulted Google and came across a young girl’s drawing, which they eventually used as a basis for the cover design. “We came across this 8-year-old’s drawing and we were like, ‘Yo, that is like the most simple but incredible thing ever; it’s right to the point,’ ” he recalled. “Basically, the point is making something simple that can represent the whole idea. You look at it and it doesn’t look like a park, but you know that’s that Blue Slide Park.” The Blue Slide Cover is more Bob Ross than Rick Ross in its design. Deviating from more standard hip-hop cover art, the BSP front panel features a painting of multicolored triangles, with a big blue line right down the middle. To execute his vision, rather than go with famed hip-hop photogs like Jonathan Mannion or Danny Clinch, Mac recruited his big brother. “He’s always worked on art as long as I can remember,” Mac said. “He draws all the time and he’s getting into graphic design. If I can have my brother work on something for it, that’s great.” Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park is due in stores November 8. What do you think of Mac Miller’s album cover? Tell us in the comments!
