Audi drove directly into the world of politics on Sunday night. Just like the controversial 84 Lumber ad that has left viewers talking, Audi used its time during Super Bowl LI to make a very clear statement. And that statement centered very clearly on the issue of gender and wage equality. There was no subtlety here, either. While other ads (such as this Budweiser immigration commercial ) tip-toed around sensitive subjects a little bit, Audi did not mince words or beat around any bushes. “What do I tell my daughter?” a man wonders while watching his daughter compete in a downhill derby race, adding: “Do I tell her that her grandpa is worth more than her grandma? That her dad is worth more than her mom? “Do I tell her that despite her education, her drive, her skills, her intelligence, she will automatically be valued as less than every man she ever meets?” After she wins the competition, he muses: “Or maybe I’ll be able to tell her something different.” Elizabeth Banks and Octavia Spencer were among those who reacted to the sentimental ad on social media. To wit: Where do you stand on this sort of Super Bowl commercial? Did you stand up and cheer when you watched? Or roll your eyes over a car company exploiting a legitimately important topic just to sell a few more cars. View the ad below:
Coca-Cola coughed up the cash for two ads during the Super Bowl, but its pre-game spot was one of the most talked-about and controversial. Same was true in 2014 when it first aired! The beverage giant aired a re-run of the spot it ran February 2, 2014, when the Seattle Seahawks drubbed the Denver Broncos 43-8. Last night, if the poignant pre-game Coca-Cola Super Bowl ad , fittingly titled, “It's Beautiful” felt familiar, that's because it was … identical. It features a cast of diverse people singing “America The Beautiful,” first in English, but also languages like Hindi, Arabic, and Tagalog. The ad is designed to portray the multi-cultural make-up of the U.S., and given the current political climate, carried special significance. It's hard not to see the recycled ad as a protest of the nascent presidency of Donald J. Trump and his nationalist, “America first” agenda. Not surprisingly, it is even more polarizing now than it was then – which was pretty polarizing even in relatively quaint, peaceful 2014. Last time the spot aired, a bunch of people hated it, taking to social media to air their grievances against the brand (see gallery below). “One simply does NOT sing America the Beautiful in ANY language but English! Get on board or OUT!” one Facebook user posted. Coke's FB page was, and is, transforming into a wall of conservative protest … the U.S. president knows something about those apparently. The pointless hashtag #BoycottCoke has resurfaced as well. Meanwhile, supporters of the brand and its message have been equally vocal praising the ad, along with some notably similar others. Combined with the 84 Lumber Super Bowl ad , the Airbnb Super Bowl commercial and others, the theme of Sunday night was consistent. Check out the 2014/2017 Coke spot below:
These days, it's looking like Iggy Azalea's career is pretty much DOA. After all, it's not a good sign when you have to cancel your first US tour due to lack of interest. And once Macklemore starts taking shots at you, you may as well just hang it up. But on the plus side, Iggy's personal life is firing on all cylinders. TMZ caught up with the I-G-G-Y recently and asked about her relationship with Nick Young , as well as the possibility of her bringing some little Iggy-Igs into the world. What's really interesting about the clip below, however, isn't Iggy's thoughts on child-rearing, but the possible hint at the the very end that she and Nick have already tied the knot. Asked if Nick is cool with the idea of babies “with an Australian twinge” (weird question, but hey, unscripted interviews are tough), Iggy replied, “He better! He has a wife with one.” It's possible she meant he will have a wife with one, but considering Iggy and Nick were talking about getting hitched low-key ar city hall as recently as last week, we wouldn't be surprised if they're already hitched. Hey, the justice of the peace ceremony isn't particularly fancy , but it gets the job done.
Super Bowl 50 sucked. The Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers by compiling under 200 yards of total offense and converting one third downs all game. It was a sloppy, boring game that didn’t feature a touchdown from farther than two yards away. But there were at least a few things that saved the Super Bowl, as an event , from being a total letdown. And one of those things was Clete Blakeman . The well-chiseled referee made a variety of calls on the field, but those were nothing compared to the phone calls going around from female viewer to another, each asking the same thing: Who is Clete Blakeman? And is he single?!? Speaking of hot men… MATT DAMON IS BACK AS JASON BOURNE! Sorry. But we’re a tad bit excited. And we think you will be, too, after seeing the Jason Bourne trailer that debuted during the big game: Jason Bourne Trailer Prior to kickoff, of course, Lady Gaga blew us away with a national anthem that actually had people comparing it to the iconic Whitney Houston version from 1991. How could they? This is how they could: Lady Gaga National Anthem at Super Bowl 50 Gaga was not the only superstar to take to the stage, of course. If the goal of any commercial is to make an impression, then Nationwide should be popping champagne bottles inside its headquarters today. Perhaps more than any other ad that aired last night, folks are still talking about the Nationwide Super Bowl commercial . Only, instead of praising its humor or originality, critics are wondering: Did Nationwide really just run a commercial that centered on a dead child?!? Nationwide Super Bowl Commercial: Make Safe Happen The spot (titled “Make Safe Happen”) opened with a scene of a little kid riding a tricycle, playing with a dog and engaging in other childhood activities. “I’ll never learn to ride a bike,” the young boy says at the outset. “Or get cooties. I’ll never learn to fly… or travel the world with my best friend… and I won’t ever get married.” Why not? “I couldn’t grow up because I died from an accident.” Oh. We then cut to various grave scenes, as the ad reads: “The number one cause of childhood deaths is preventable accidents. At Nationwide, we believe in protecting what matters most: your kids. Together, we can make safe happen.” Many viewers were aghast that the company would air such a morbid commercial, with criticism growing so strong that Nationwide has actually released a statement in defense of the footage. “Preventable injuries around the home are the leading cause of childhood deaths in America,” it reads. “Most people don’t know that. Nationwide ran an ad during the Super Bowl that started a fierce conversation. The sole purpose of this message was to start a conversation, not sell insurance.” We somehow doubt that’s 100% true, but okay. Fair enough. Go on… 2015 Super Bowl Commercials 1. Kim Kardashian T-Mobile Commercial Kim Kardashian shills for T-Mobile in this commercial. But it’s not just any commercial: it’s a Super Bowl commercial! “We want to build awareness of an issue that is near and dear to all of us — the safety and well-being of our children,” the statement continues. “We knew the ad would spur a variety of reactions. In fact, thousands of people visited MakeSafeHappen.com, a new website to help educate parents and caregivers with information and resources in an effort to make their homes safer and avoid a potential injury or death. “Nationwide has been working with experts for more than 60 years to make homes safer. While some did not care for the ad, we hope it served to begin a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere.” The Nationwide Super Bowl commercial was not the only Super Bowl commercial to earn criticism. Some with celiac disease are angry over this Nick Offerman NASCAR ad ? Seriously. They really are.
Were you offended by GoDaddy Super Bowl commercials of the past? The ones where Danica Patrick and other women pretty much just flaunt their hotness the entire time? Well… you ain’t seen anything ridiculously appalling yet! GoDaddy Super Bowl Ad The website-based company has unveiled its latest Super Bowl ad and it’s clearly a take on last year’s Bud Light puppy commercial . A really terrible take, that is. The spot features a young dog falling off the back of a truck and then making a long, difficult journey back home. Once the owners see that he’s made his way back, they are overjoyed with relief…because they just sold him online using a GoDaddy powered website. Seriously! In response to the commercial – which is cruel, unfunny and makes a mockery out of actual puppy mills – a petition has gone up on Change.org to have the video pulled. It reads: “Whether or not this was meant to be satirical, it’s offensive. Essentially, Go Daddy is encouraging private breeding/puppy mills while shelter animals wait patiently for their forever homes or worse – to be euthanized. They are also encouraging purchasing an animal online; the animal could be sold to someone who runs a fighting ring, someone who abuses animals, or to someone who cannot adequately care for the animal. Animal rights are no laughing matter and to portray them as such is cruel and irresponsible. Among other Super Bowl ads that have been released early, one features Kim Kardashian and another features Charlotte McKinney . 31 Crazy Commercials We Love (or Love to Hate, or Just Hate) 1. Personal injury lawyer Jamie Casino’s epic, thoroughly insane Super Bowl commercial made him one of the biggest viral stars of Sunday night’s event. Impressive, considering it only aired in Savannah, Ga. Almost immediately after the Jamie Casino Super Bowl ad aired and spread like wildfire online, he began getting calls from potential clients all over the U.S. Not only that, TV and movie producers began inundating him with offers, he says. If you’ve seen this production he put together, you’ll understand why: Jamie Casino Super Bowl Commercial In theatrical, hilariously over-the-top fashion, Casino’s ad tells the story of how his brother was killed in a police-related shooting and how this changed his life. Before that, he admits, he was a ruthless criminal defense attorney. Now he’s a man of the people, a lawyer who stands up for those who have been wronged! How much did this unreal TV spot cost? Jamie Casino tells TMZ Live that he spent under $100,000 to film and buy the advertising on local TV during the Super Bowl … clearly money well spent. According to Casino, he has a movie camera that he often utilizes for television advertising, but decided to go particularly big in this case. Mission accomplished. As for whether he’ll actually take producers up on offers to parlay this into fame and fortune? His two young kids will probably prevent that from happening. We can’t wait for the sequel, though. Sunday’s Coca-Cola Super Bowl commercial, which featured U.S. citizens singing “America the Beautiful” in various languages, was generally well received. Just not by the Twitter-verse, where many users were live-tweeting the event and quickly lambasted the brand as un-American, or even a terrorist organization. Seriously. People were aghast that there are human beings living in America who don’t speak English, and that Coke might feature them in advertising. OMG. Matthew Broderick is finally reprising his career-defining role of Ferris Bueller. That’s the good news. The bad? It’s only for a Super Bowl commercial. The sequel to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has been rumored for years, and will likely never happen. Which is probably for the best, as it could never be topped. Perhaps a 30- or 60-second Super Bowl ad – for what, we have no idea, but a teaser for the spot appears below – is the perfect dose of Bueller in 2012. Check out a gray-haired Matthew reenacting a famous scene below: Matthew Broderick Ferris Bueller Ad Tease We don’t know what’s funnier, seeing Broderick as a middle-aged version of Ferris, or that we live in an age where Super Bowl commercials have their own trailers.
