There have already been a number of phemenomenal tributes to the late Leslie Nielsen, but now Airplane and Naked Gun co-writer/director David Zucker has penned one and it’s both heartwarming and hilarious. There is one brief, eyebrow-raising moment where Zucker writes: “Offscreen, he wasn’t so much of a joke or storyteller…” Fortunately, he immediately qualifies this statement by saying that Nielsen preferred practical jokes and that “the stories are legion about the fart machine…” Too perfect. Considering we’re only about four weeks away from Christmas — insert prerequisite “where did the year go?!” quip here — it’s about that time for celebrities to remember the less fortunate among us. With that in mind, here’s Comedy Death-Ray and Funny or Die presenting “We Are the World 25.75,” an almost anniversary celebration of the Quincy Jones supersong in support of the LA Regional Foodbank. Irvin Kershner has died at the age of 87. He leaves behind some recognizable films ( The Flim Flam Man with George C. Scott; Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway) and several sequels of various prominence ( The Return of a Man Called Horse , Robocop II and the renegade James Bond film Never Say Never Again ), never afraid to explore and extend the story of someone else’s work. So, really, it’s not a huge surprise in hindsight that he accepted the challenge of The Empire Strikes Back , the 1980 effort continuing the story that George Lucas started three years earlier with Star Wars . But could anybody have expected Kershner to knock this particular sequel out of the f*cking park?

Sad news for people who like to laugh: Actor Leslie Nielsen of Naked Gun and Airplane! fame of has died of complications from pneumonia at the age of 84. For my money, there’s no better showcase of Nielsen’s deadpan comic timing and deft slapstick ability than this montage of epilogues from Police Squad! , in which Nielsen fakes a freeze frame at the end of every episode. It appears that in between curating art shows, attending classes, finishing up work on his Three’s Company reboot and a very busy self-pleasure schedule, James Franco was able to sneak away for a taping of Inside the Actor’s Studio — and the audience was out of control. Screaming women, hundreds of rejected fans and one overworked guest who would have likely just slept through the entire presentation were he in the audience.
