REVIEW: Colin Firth Leaves Us Speechless in The King’s Speech

Now that audiences will finally have a chance to see The King’s Speech, they can assess for themselves whether they can “relate” to a movie — based on a true story — in which a stuttering monarch works with a speech therapist to overcome his deficiency. That’s a question critics, journalist-types and Oscar watchers have been pondering since the movie started gathering buzz in Toronto in September, and plenty of critics have already called the movie middlebrow. While they don’t necessarily mean the word as a perjorative, their use of it does give the sense that a movie is something you examine from the safe end of a long stick, and in the case of The King’s Speech, yes, by golly, the ordinary folk out there just might take to it.

Here’s a Roundup of The Nutcracker in 3-D Reviews That Mention the Holocaust

Expectations for The Nutcracker in 3-D weren’t terribly high to begin with. The film had been shelved for two years, given a reportedly awful 3-D conversion and it’s opening against Disney’s much-hyped Tangled . But according to the first reviews, it’s much worse than all of that. Yes, we’re talking about a misguided Holocaust allegory that apparently makes the prison camp in Toy Story 3 look like Neverland. Let’s take a look at some of the most scathing, Nazi-themed reactions to the film, which is currently ranking at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Gift Guide: The Golden Year of Boy Meets World

If any season of the long-running ABC sitcom Boy Meets World is worth owning, it’s this one: Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) is still a rascal, Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) hasn’t turned into a moody misanthrope yet, and Topanga (Danielle Fishel) is — for some reason — a space-cadet hippie preteen with crimped hair. It never got better than this.

Gift Guide: The Next Rushmore?

There are any number of reasons to dislike Simon Rich: At 26, he’s a published author, writer for Saturday Night Live and The New Yorker and can call famed New York Times columnist Frank Rich “dad.” Oh, there’s also the fact that his first novel, Elliot Allagash , hasn’t even been out for a year and is already earmarked for big-screen glory thanks to Academy Award nominee Jason Reitman. Ugh! There’s just one reason to not want to smack Rich upside the head: He’s really, really talented.

Be Grateful You’re Not Spending Thanksgiving with These 5 Movie Families

‘Tis the season to begin complaining about spending time with one’s family during the holidays. (If anyone reading this is related to me — I’m not talking about you. Honest.) But as with all things, surviving Thanksgiving dinner with the relatives is really just a matter of perspective. So if Aunt Barb starts acting inappropriately after too much Franzia, and your Tea Party-ing cousin wants to show you irrefutable proof that the president is actually a Seventh-Day Adventist from Mars, just remind yourself how lucky you are not to be spending Turkey Day with these movie families:

REVIEW: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Nipples Take Center Stage in Rambunctious Faster

Bullet-headed counterprogramming to this week’s slate of soft-palate fare, Faster was built for speed, and for an action-savvy audience who can appreciate a throwaway vengeance flick for exactly what it is. Though the film’s serviceable pretense of a plot is doled out in increments small enough to pull off a big, bruising twist at the end, Faster is about delivering — early, often and without shame.
