Felon Voting Rights Restoration In Florida Is A Big Win For Blacks As The Political Wave Ebbed

See the article here:

T here was a big win for African-Americans on Election Day even as tight election races appeared to minimized the anticipated Black wave. SEE ALSO: Here’s What Happened In Alabama When Voting Rights Were Restored To Ex-Felons Florida voters approved Amendment 4, which automatically restores voting rights for people who served their time in prison for felony convictions. “The passage of Amendment 4 tonight in Florida is a victory for democracy. An estimated 1.4 million people will now have a second chance and be able to exercise their right to vote, having paid their debt to society by completing their sentences. We applaud the people of Florida for making the right choice tonight,” People For the American Way said.   Florida, which banned more felons from voting than any other state, was  blocking 21.5 percent of African Americans from casting ballots , achieving the goals of felony disenfranchisement laws that were  historically intended to reduce Black voting power . BREAKING: Amendment 4 in Florida has just PASSED! YES! YES! YES! 1.4 million former felons who had been banned from voting for life will all now be granted back their voting rights. A HUGE and hard fought victory. One of the most important of our lifetime. — Shaun King (@shaunking) November 7, 2018 Looking ahead to the 2020 elections, there’s plenty of reason for Republicans to stay awake at night worrying about the potential political impact of Amendment 4. With voting rights restored, an estimated 258,060 felons would likely register as Democrats and just 46,920 would join the Republican Party, according to a study  reported by the Sentencing Project . In the purple state, where presidential elections and statewide races are usually razor thin, this could swing elections in favor of Democrats. President Donald Trump   won just 1.3 percent more votes  than  Hillary Clinton  in 2016. Florida was one of a handful of states that does not automatically restore voting rights after its citizens finish serving their time in prison. Approximately 6.1 million felons across the country have lost their right to vote, according to the  Sentencing Project . Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia are among the states with large populations of Black felons who  must petition their states to restore their voting rights . SEE ALSO: Make Massa Happy! ‘Vote—Don’t Dishonor Your Family!’ Watch Oprah Campaign For Stacey Abrams In GA [Video]

Jessica McGowan/Getty Images Oprah Campaigns For Stacey Abrams In Georgia Oprah sent a strong message out to Georgians today; “Vote for Stacey Abrams!” The mogul was in Marietta, Georgia today to campaign for the candidate vying to become America’s first black female governor. While there she told attendees who came out in DROVES, that she was there on her volition after scouring for Stacey’s number. She also added that she wasn’t paid for the appearance. “I wasn’t asked, I just called Stacy up three days ago. Yes. I didn’t even know her. I am an independent woman. I have earned the right to do exactly what I want to do. I’ve earned the right to do what I want to do when I want to do it. I’ve earned the right to think for myself and vote for myself,” she added. “Nobody paid for me to come. Nobody even asked for me to come here. I paid for myself and I approved this message.” She also shunned people considering not voting and told a story about Otis Moss Sr. who walked 18 miles to vote in an election but was told he was too late to cast a ballot. He never got a chance to vote before he passed. “When I go to the polls and I cast my ballot, I cast it for a man I never knew. I cast it for Otis Moss Sr., who walked 18 miles one day just for the chance to vote,” said Oprah.” When I go to the polls, I cast the vote for my grandmother who died in 1963 before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and never had a chance to vote.” “For anybody here who has an ancestor who didn’t have the right to vote and you are choosing not to vote wherever you are in this state or this country, you are dishonoring your family,’ she said. “Honor your legacy and honor your right to citizenship in this, which is the greatest country in the world!” Atlanta’s Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was also in attendance in support of Abrams. Magic happens when we use our voices to support leaders who share our values. It was an honor to join @Oprah in support of GA’s next governor, @StaceyAbrams ! Three HBCU graduates. Three women leaders. I don’t know how it gets more magical than this! #thelastweekend #Vote pic.twitter.com/tybReMYynd — Keisha Lance Bottoms (@KeishaBottoms) November 1, 2018 After the rally, Oprah went canvassing door to door. What would YOU do if Oprah showed up at your doorstep???

Intellectual Idiots: University President Put On Blast For Describing Three-Fifths Slavery Agreement As A “Pragmatic Half-Victory”

All was can do is SMH at this guy and his comments… According to Raw Story: The president of Emory University, James Wagner has drawn criticism for using the Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787 as an example of what he called “pragmatic half-victories” in his latest column for the university’s magazine. “Some might suggest that the constitutional compromise reached for the lowest common denominator — for the barest minimum value on which both sides could agree,” Wagner wrote about the agreement between Southern and Northern states to count slaves as three-fifths of a person. “I rather think something different happened. Both sides found a way to temper ideology and continue working toward the highest aspiration they both shared—the aspiration to form a more perfect union. They set their sights higher, not lower, in order to identify their common goal and keep moving toward it.” Wagner’s invocation of the agreement as a “lesson of our forebears” was immediately criticized on social media on Saturday; Salon also called “shockingly horrible” ; and Gawker suggested that same day that The Affordable Care Act, the Voting Rights Act, or “Do all homework, you get to watch The Simpsons” would have been more appropriate examples of political compromise. As stated in Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the U.S. Constitution, the agreement mandated that, “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.” The agreement was abandoned after the abolition of slavery, as mandated by the 13th Amendment. SMH.

Will Florida Laws Keep Young Voters From Primary?

MTV News takes a closer look at legislation passed last year in the state that has voter-registration groups up in arms. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney campaigns in Dunedin, Florida on Monday Photo: Emmanuel Dunand/ AFP/ Getty Images TAMPA, Florida — It’s a teenage rite of passage up there with learning to drive and attending prom: your first time voting . But according to some longtime voter-registration organizations, that right could be threatened this year in a number of states due to new laws that make signing up new voters more difficult. The issue has come into sharp relief this week in Florida, which holds its presidential primary Tuesday. A bill passed last year in the state includes a number of new rules for how civic organizations can register new voters, as well as ones that reduce the number of early voting days from 14 to eight and prohibit early voting on the Sunday before an election . The part of the new law that has troubled groups such as Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters the most, though, is the one that forces such third-party organizations to submit voter-registration applications within 48 hours of receiving them, instead of the 10 days as provided by the pervious law. These groups — which are among several who have suspended their voter-registration drives in Florida this year because of a lawsuit over the changes — say the fines and threats of potential civil lawsuits have put a chill on their get-out-the-vote efforts. “We are outraged at these new laws that will prevent opportunities for youth civic participation,” Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote, said in a statement announcing the lawsuit in early December. Attorneys for the groups claim Florida’s new voter laws violate the U.S. Constitution and federal laws by violating their constitutionally protected rights of speech and association and failing to give individuals and groups fair notice of how to comply with the laws’ “confusing and unclear mandates.” They also argue that the laws breach the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, a federal law designed in part to “encourage community-based voter-registration activity.” Supporters of the law say it will save money by eliminating extra voting days and is a bulwark against voter fraud, which its supporters argue is a constant threat to the democratic process. Some Democrats, however, have accused Republicans — Florida is among the half-dozen states with GOP-led legislatures that passed new voting laws last year — of using the provisions to disenfranchise some traditionally key Democratic voting blocs, including racial minorities, the poor, the young and elderly voters. There were 31 cases of voter fraud referred to Florida authorities between January 2008 and 2011, and only two resulted in arrests out of the 8.1 million votes cast in the 2008 election. A hearing was held in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, led by U.S. Senators Bill Nelson of Florida and Dick Durbin of Illinois, in which the men described the bill as a “voter suppression act” and vowed to have the courts address what Durbin sees as a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
