Shaun King Calls Out Jay-Z Over NFL Partnership: “He’s A Proud Capitalist”

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN News of Jay Z’s partnership with the NFL caused quite a few heads to turn when it was announced yesterday. In case you missed it, the NFL dropped a  press release  yesterday stating that the Roc Nation founder would be “entering into a multiyear partnership with the NFL to enhance the NFL’s live game experiences and to amplify the league’s social justice efforts.” “With its global reach, the National Football League has the platform and opportunity to inspire change across the country,” Carter said in a press release. “Roc Nation has shown that entertainment and enacting change are not mutually exclusive ideas — instead, we unify them. This partnership is an opportunity to strengthen the fabric of communities across America.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). He continued: “I’m really into action — I’m into real work. I’m not into how it looks. How it looks only lasts for a couple months until we start doing the work. I’ve been in this position many times. Take Tidal as a great example from five years ago. Now, people look at it today, people have a different outlook on it. But at the time, people didn’t see what was going on. So I’ve been in this position many times. I just show up and do the work, I’m not interested in how things look on the outside. If protesting on the field is the most effective way, then protest on the field. But, if you have a vehicle that you can inspire change and you can speak to the masses and educate at the same time.” Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Activist and writer Shaun King, who has been deemed rather problematic himself over the years, took to social media to call Jay out over the questionable business deal. He’s a proud capitalist. It’s the primary theme of his career. Last year he dissed people who performed at the Super Bowl. Wore a Kaep jersey. They made him an offer,” King tweeted. “Jay Z is what I would call a woke capitalist. Woke describes his capitalism, but let’s be clear, he’s a capitalist, and if a good deal comes along, even if it means working with the NFL at the expense of Colin Kaepernick, he’ll make the deal. That’s what he just did,” he went on. “I don’t think Jay Z violated a single one of his core principles by making a deal with the NFL while they actively ban Colin Kaepernick from ever playing another game for the rest of his life. That’s all I’m saying. I wouldn’t do it, but I’m not Jay Z.” He closed by saying that Jay Z did not consult Kaepernick before signing this deal. “To be very clear… Jay Z DID NOT speak to or consult with Colin Kaepernick before he made this deal with the NFL. He openly said that to the NY Times. Sometimes people avoid advice and counsel that they know good and well will conflict with their money. ” If you are baffled by the move that Jay Z just made with the NFL then you don't actually listen to his music. United Negro College Fund Teams Up With Cengage To Provide HBCU Students With Access To Free Textbooks

More here:

T he rising cost of higher education has created financial burdens for several students throughout the country. According to a study conducted by Morning Consult , four in 10 students skipped meals to be able to afford textbooks and course materials and three in 10 students decided to opt out of a course due to the high price of required textbooks. The United Negro College Fund has teamed up with the tech-ed company Cengage to address the growing issue through the creation of a program that will provide HBCU students with free access to textbooks. Black students have been significantly impacted by the expensive cost of textbooks. Research shows that 60 percent of African American students decided not to purchase textbooks because the prices were too high, and 52 percent say that the cost affects their finances. Furthermore, 32 percent of Black students have to sacrifice trips home to spend time with their loved ones so they can pay for their textbooks. Through the program, UNCF and Cengage will select 1,000 students to have free access to Cengage’s digital subscription platform which features over 22,000 eBooks and other course materials. “Every student should have an equal opportunity to succeed, and having the right learning materials can have a critical impact on performance,” Michael Hansen , CEO, Cengage, said in a statement. “The high cost of textbooks have prohibited this for many students. This is why we launched Cengage Unlimited – to make quality learning more affordable. UNCF has helped thousands of learners, enabling opportunity for minority students through its financial support and public advocacy. We are proud to partner with UNCF to ease some of the financial burden these students face and ensure they are equipped with the tools they need to reach their full potential.” The leadership team at UNCF believes that this initiative will be instrumental in alleviating the financial burdens faced by HBCU students. “We must continue to invest our time and money in better futures for young people around the country. Partners like Cengage are vitally important to this work and we are pleased to have them as an ally in helping to educate the next generation of leaders,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax , President and CEO of UNCF. Several efforts are being made to help HBCU students better their financial situations. The Inspiration To Create ‘Hair Love’ Came From The Lack Of Representation Of Black Father & Daughters

More here:

Source: Sony Pictures Animation / Sony Pictures Animation When the visuals for Matthew A. Cherry’s Hair Love came across our computer screen, we rejoiced at imagery that showed a Black father and daughter in such a positive light. It was the representation we rarely see, even if it is a cartoon. MUST READ:  Animated Short Film ‘Hair Love’ Celebrates Black Father & Daughter Relationships Hair Love , an animated short film about a father who takes on the battle of doing his daughter’s hair, will premiere ahead of The Angry Birds 2 movie in theaters this weekend, broadcasting the image in front of millions of children and families. We caught up with director Matthew A. Cherry and producer Peter Ramsey, who both opened up about creating the animated short and why it is important for all to see. HelloBeautiful: What inspired you to create Hair Love? Matthew:  I was seeing a lot of viral videos of African-American dads doing their daughter’s hair hitting the timeline and I always like to share family friendly stuff like that. They were going extra viral, 100K retweets, and I would always share videos of moms interacting with their kids too and it would do OK but never as big as that. Obviously they were cute videos but I would come to learn later that part of it was that people weren’t used to seeing these images of African-American fathers doing these type of interactions with their kids (especially when the hair would be moving and breaking rubber bands and hitting dad in the eye). The idea of hair having a mind of its own was the linchpin that created this idea. HB: How does it feel to finally have your work being shown on such a massive platform after so much work to get it made and funded? Matthew:  It’s kind of surreal. This literally started with an idea through Kickstarter and for it to be a New York Times best selling book and now about to be in theaters across the country is pretty crazy. It’s definitely surreal. I just really hope that it inspires other creators. Sometimes i think we waste so much time reaching out to people thinking that they have to help us with our ideas and help move them forward and sometimes all you have to do is put it out there and take that risk and bet on yourself and trust that you can raise the money yourself and get the idea to other likeminded creatives that will be able to help you with it and bring it to market. HB: How was it for you to be involved in the short film and taking on the role as Executive Producer? How was that process for you?  Peter: It was great because from minute one, I believed in Matthew. I knew he was a really talented, energetic, inspiring guy in his work and in his life. I got to see the story he wanted to tell and it felt like it was right for the time, its got its heart in the right place, it’s going to really speak to people, all of those things made it really easy for me. Really I’ve just been a cheerleader. I’ve just been doing whatever I could, whether it’s advice or encouragement or whatever little thing I could offer to help move it down the line. It’s Matthew and a fantastic team of really talented people working on it that have really brought it to life. Matthew:  Yeah, Bruce Smith, Everett Downing, Stacey Newton, Monica Young, Karen Toliver. It’s a great team. Peter : It’s been a whole lot of work and whole lot of love What did you learn about fatherhood in the process?  Peter:  I have three kids. I’ve experienced a lot of moments like this. I think from this film specifically, the thing that jumps out at me is a lot of it is about people supporting each other in family. You can see everybody in this family in some way shape or form has supported each other. It’s about the idea of a father listening to his daughter and her communicating something that’s really important to her and him understanding why it’s so important and doing what he can to help her express who she is and what she feels. I think that’s a huge part of what drives this movie and makes it feel special. It might not be something you think about watching it but that’s what’s under the surface. That part of a parent/child relationship I think is something people need to pay a lot of attention to and think about that because even the smallest kid is still a real person deserving respect and being allowed to express themselves. Practicing for a career in the spotlight through the competition. “I want to work on commercials,” she revealed. Not having formal training didn’t intimidate her. “Skill you can always gain a skill,” she said. “But your unique personality, your unique look, your unique style is what speaks.” She saw doing things like finding her lighting and practicing poses as chance to “stretch me artistically.” She campaigned hard swapping out a portion of her usual inspirational “morning gram” videos for stylized tutorials and photos that showed her ability to represent the brand in static or video format. Now that she has proven her versatility she hopes to use her platform with Sephora to reach a bigger audience so she can inspire more people. “I hope I can make a difference for anyone male, female, Black , white, Asian by letting them know that there’s someone like them out there letting them know that there is someone that’s a representation of them.” Placement in the Sephora Squad will give Watson the opportunity to not only appear in digital advertisements representing the interests of the brand to the everyday person to others it will allow her to advocate for diversity to brand decision makers . She doesn’t yet know how she will speak up for others in the space, but she is making it a priority to continue being her “bold, honest and outgoing,” self. “Sephora is a universal place it’s a universal playground. It opens a lot of fields for me. I want to be a representation for women of color there. Jay-Z & Will Smith to Produce Series Highlighting Women of the Civil Rights Movement

More here:

Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty M amie Till-Mobley, mother of Emmett Till, will be the central focus for season one of ABC’s Women of the Movement,  a new series that will highlight and chronicle the civil-rights movement “as told by the women behind it.” The series will be produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith, both of whom were vital to securing the show a spot on ABC’s lineup. The show will focus on Mamie Till, whose son — Emmett Till — was lynched by a white mob in Mississippi for allegedly winking at a white woman in 1955. Following his death, Till-Mobley went on to join a forces with major players in the fight for civil rights justice following her son’s death. She dedicated the rest of her life to the civil justice and reform until her own passing in 2003. Jay-Z originally teamed up with HBO to work on a miniseries surround Emmet Till, where Taraji P. Henson was set to play his mother, but when director John Middleton died in April, the project was believed to be dissolved. It is not confirmed, but speculated that Women of the Movement is a the product of the work already done into the aforementioned miniseries surround Till. When proposed with the possibility of grabbing the rights to this, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke instantly loved the idea as the series would turn attention to the women who were responsible for so many key events associated with the civil rights movement. This move aligns perfectly with Burke’s proposition to get more women in programming at the station.

Briana DeJesus: I Have a REAL Job and I Support My Whole Family!

When criticizing reality stars, viewers often fall back on the “get a real job” argument. This is understandable, as some of the folks who have become obscenely wealthy from living their lives in front of a camera crew appear to do very little in the way of actual work. Amber Portwood, for example, pulls in a mid-six-figure income despite a lifestyle so indolent that she's adopted the sloth as her “spirit animal.” But not every star in the Teen Mom universe has adopted such a disdainful attitude toward work. Take Briana DeJesus, for example. Briana says she has a real job — and she also claims that putting in long hours week after week is really starting to pay off. Here's the latest on DeJesus' financial situation — and why her latest comments have left some fans confused: 1. Every Day She’s Hustlin’ Briana is the newest addition to the Teen Mom 2 family, which means she hasn’t been raking in MTV paychecks for her entire adult life like the rest of the ladies. 2. Started From the Bottom Sure, Briana got her start on Teen Mom 3, but the show only lasted for one season, which means there were several years in which she was a single mom without a reality show gig to pay the bills. 3. Cue the Dolly Parton Song Which means that, like most Americans, Briana had no choice but to start workin’ 9 to 5. 4. What a Way to Make a Living “I hate when people tell me to get a real job. I have one! I work in corporate America. Regular 9-5 like everyone else. I’ll never forget where I came from,” she recently tweeted. 5. What Does She Do? DeJesus revealed back in 2017 that she works for a travel company, but it wasn’t until this week that we learned she STILL works for the same company! 6. Keepin’ It Real DeJesus received widespread praise for her work ethic, with one follower replying, “It’s not on the show, and people don’t look beyond that. I give you credit for still keeping it.” View Slideshow

Nafisah Carter Went From Doing Hair In Her Dorm To Being A Celebrity Hair Stylist

Source: Nathan Pearcy / @npearcypics Nafisah Carter’s first inspiration to become an entrepreneur was her mother. But it wasn’t until college that she realized she had a passion for doing hair. Friends would line up outside her dorm room to get their hair done, which is how she made extra money. After graduating college, Nafisah went to hair school. “When I started beauty school, I was just interested in hair,” explains the North Carolina native. “I went to Dudley, and Dudley would come in to talk to us about the careers. Then I realized people work with celebrities and travel. He told us about so many different careers in hair and that’s when I realized I want to work with celebrities. I thought it was cool.” Nafisah was exposed early on to entrepreneurship watching her mother travel state to state for different trade shows. “I saw her work hard,” says Nafisah. “I liked the traveling. She made her own schedule.” Nafisah’s dream of becoming a celebrity stylist eventually came true. “I recently worked with Michelle Williams, Erica Mena, Misty Copeland” to name a few. Nafisah decide to move to New York where she began working at the renown Rita Hazan Salon. “When I worked in New York that’s when I learned everything I learned about working with celebrities,” she explained. “I helped with them in the salon. I was mesmerized when Jennifer Lopez came to get her hair done.” After launching her own beauty boutique, she ventured into the hair extensions. The international celebrity stylist says she decided to start her own hair line when she got frustrated working on low quality extensions one day. ” “A lot of my clients would come and their hair was bad. It would tangle, it would shed, it would melt on the flat iron. I wanted a good product for my clients because I knew I was doing a good service. A good service with good quality hair so that way they can have a long-lasting hairstyle. I did a lot of research. It took a long time because I ordered hair, I did a lot of testing.” After finding a product she approved of, Nafisah launched Pyara Hair. The soft, natural and luminous bundles are scented, packaged and ready to be installed with a glamorous lifestyle in mind. Each bundle is tangle free, shed free, and chemical free, and color friendly. The Bombshell Beauty Collection includes Straight, Curly Kinky, and Wave textures that and can last up to 3 years. With hair standards techniques constantly changing, Nafisah is consistently elevating her craft taking classes to stay on top of the latest hair trends. “I stay on social media, different shows and practice on my friends and family.” But the beauty mogul covets a classic look over following the trend. “People tend to go with the trends, and I tend to stay away. That is what keeps my clients in my chair.” Nafisah plans on expanding her business with a product line for weave care. Follow her on social media and check out PyaraHair.com .
