Happy Birthday, Allison Iraheta!

Carrie Underwood wins all the Grammys. Adam Lambert gets lots of attention. And Crystal Bowersox is often in the news these days, as she leads the season nine pack of finalists. But American Idol fans should keep an eye on Allison Iraheta. This young rocker is a singer on the rise, quietly selling a decent number of albums and booking a gig as the opening act for Lambert this summer on his wildly anticipated tour. Incredibly, Allison is only 18, turning that important age today. We’d like to take a moment and wish her the best of luck, while encouraging readers to chime in and do the same. We bet this isn’t the last photo montage we post in Iraheta’s honor. She has a long career ahead of her…

Allison Iraheta in Latina Magazine: Life is Good!

Allison Iraheta has been off American Idol for almost a full year now, but the singer tells the latest issue of Latina magazine that life is better than ever. “I don’t have to step onto a stage and get judge every week. Now I get to do my own songs and talk to my fans,” she said. “There are all these girls writing my on Twitter… saying [they] love songs like ‘Scars’ because they can totally relate to what I’m singing about. Things are really good right now.” Iraheta will tour this summer with Adam Lambert, who has nothing but amazing things to say about his friend: “She’s so freaking talented… The first time I heard her album, I was in a car with the windows down and I was just dancing and rocking out to it. It’s going to take some time, but she’ll get there.” And where is that place? Allison hopes it’s a level of accomplishment where she’s recognized for being herself, not for having starred on the most popular show on TV. “I don’t want people to see me and immediately think, ‘Oh, that’s the girl with the red hair who was on American Idol . I want them to say, ‘That’s Allison Iraheta. She’s a great artist who makes real music and has something to say – and she rocks.”

‘Me & Bobby McGee’: The Story Behind Crystal Bowersox’s Cover

On ‘American Idol,’ Bowersox earned big praise for singing Janis Joplin’s posthumous hit. By Kyle Anderson Once again, one of the highlights of Tuesday night’s episode of “American Idol” — which was focused on songs that had hit No. 1 on the pop charts — was Crystal Bowersox’s performance. Armed with her trusty guitar and her disarming voice, the rocker sang “Me and Bobby McGee,” which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. There’s a bittersweet feeling within the lyrics of “Bobby,” as well as in the story surrounding it. The song was written by country legends Kris Kristofferson (who has had a string of hits himself) and Fred Foster (who produced much of Roy Orbison’s best work and helped introduce the world to Dolly Parton) and was recorded by “King of the Road” singer Roger Miller and Canadian folk king Gordon Lightfoot in 1969 and 1970, respectively. Both of those versions became hits, but neither was as big as the one recorded by Joplin, who was friends and occasional lovers with Kristofferson. The bluesy growler recorded the song without his knowledge for her solo album Pearl, which she cut with the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Pearl came out in February of 1971, four months after Joplin’s October 1970 death from a heroin overdose. “Me and Bobby McGee” was released as a commercial single and hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 during the week of March 20, 1971, making Joplin only the second person in history to top that chart posthumously. Though Joplin’s version remains definitive, “Me and Bobby McGee” has been covered by a number of artists, including country greats Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash, rock icons the Grateful Dead and Melissa Etheridge, and pop idols Olivia Newton-John and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Pink’s version of the track appears on her “Live in Europe” DVD, and Tori Amos has broken it out in concert. Bowersox’s version marks the first time “Me and Bobby McGee” has appeared on “American Idol,” though songs performed by Joplin have popped up five times before. Nikki McKibbin, Carrie Underwood and Asia’h Epperson are among the “Idol” hopefuls who have performed “Piece of My Heart,” while Allison Iraheta knocked out Joplin’s “Cry Baby” last season. What did you think of Crystal Bowersox’s take on “Me and Bobby McGee”? How does it compare to Janis Joplin’s version? Let us know in the comments! How Does ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Compare To Previous Seasons?

With Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly sent home, season nine lost three of its most interesting contestants. By Eric Ditzian Lilly Scott Photo: FOX After an embarrassingly shaky start to the “American Idol” live shows late last month, many of the hopefuls — from Crystal Bowersox to Casey James to Lilly Scott — recovered to the point where we were no longer ready to declare season nine the worst in the show’s history . And then came Thursday night’s results show . Standouts Scott, Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly were sent home, while sooo-not-ready-for-prime-time crooners Katie Stevens, Paige Miles and Tim Urban made the cut. That sound you hear? America erasing their DVR season passes of “Idol.” Which raises the question: Is this season’s newly announced top 12 the weakest we’ve ever seen? Last season, which actually presented a top 13, gave us singers that were as talented as any we’d ever seen on “Idol” — Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta — plus a slew of intriguing performers with both pipes and we’ve-never-seen-anyone-quite-like-you originality (Megan Joy, Anoop Desai and Matt Giraud). Then, of course, there was dark-horse winner Kris Allen. While this year’s top 12 includes the impressive Bowersox and they-could-surprise-us contestants Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche and Casey James, the upper echelon doesn’t compare at all with last season’s. The bottom tier, meanwhile, filled with the likes of pitchy-pitiful Stevens, Miles and Urban, are far weaker than last season’s early top 13 castoffs like Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver. Such is the case when comparing season nine to season seven. By this point in 2008’s “Idol,” the fluff had been excised, and we were left with intriguing middle-of-the-pack singers Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook and Michael Johns. Again, there was no one near as overmatched as Stevens, whose blubbering reaction to making the top 12 made clear even she knew she didn’t deserve it. You’d have to go back to season six’s Sanjaya Malakar to discover contestants clearly unfit to be part of the top 12. But it’s not just an examination of season nine’s bottom-feeders that has us so underwhelmed by the top 12 we’ll see — and, unfortunately, hear — next week. It’s that so many contestants with high ceilings were shown the door. Lambert had Jason Castro-like potential. Epperly seemed like a more poised version of Brooke White. Scott had the most potential of all of them — arguably the strongest contestant aside from Bowersox. At least Bowersox is still around, as is Magnus. Those two women seem like the only ones left who might genuinely inspire us week to week. Lee Dewyze is a competent rocker in the mold of David Cook. James is a perfectly fine Southern-fried frontman, Lynche can bring both soul and emo guitar-rock verve. But goodness, where’s the excitement? There does seem to be a genuine anger bubbling on the Internet after Thursday’s elimination show. “Idol” had finally provided us with a heaping handful of singers with vocal talents to match their cultural freshness and risk-taking innovation. Any comparison to past seasons aside, here were some folks we could be excited about each week. And now, three of them are gone. “American Idol” voting public, we have only ourselves to blame. What did you think of Thursday’s results? Is this the weakest “American Idol” top 12 yet? Let us know! Adam Lambert to Perform on American Idol

Adam Lambert will return to the American Idol stage this season. A few hours after Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen performed for fans, Lambert Tweeted today: “Yes, I have been booked on Idol! Can’t reveal the date yet but it’s a ways off… So excited. Kris and Allison were awesome last night.” They sure were. But Lambert’s debut album sold the most copies of any season eight finalist and his appearance later this year is sure to draw huge ratings. But which competitors will still be around to see him? Our money is on Andrew Garcia , Casey James, Didi Benami or Crystal Bowersox to walk away with the season nine crown. What do you think?

American Idol Makes First Four Cuts

Sheryl Crow once crooned that “the first cut is the deepest.” For American Idol last night, the first four cuts were the most erroneous. Let’s analyze each below: Joe Munoz over Tim Urban?!? The latter might be cute, but did you see the look of shock on his face after Ryan told Tim he was safe? Did viewers really do Urban a favor by keeping him around and ensuring his weak vocal skills will be torn apart again and again until America comes to its senses? Tyler Grady over Jermaine Sellers?!? We weren’t fans of Grady’s 1970s-inspired gimmick, either. But he made a great point (which Simon acknowledged, if you read his lips) about the judges selecting him for the semifinals… but then jumping all over him for the same schtick that got him there. It would have been nice to have seen if Tyler had more to offer going forward, especially compared to the over-emotional nonsense that Sellers through our way this week. Janell Wheeler over Haeley Vaughn?!? Yes, Wheeler chose the wrong song. She’s not a rocker. But Vaughn comes across like some sort of frightening, dressed-up doll. She just looks awkward on stage and her rendition of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” wasn’t strong. Ashley Rodriguez over Lacey Brown?!? Brown was really bad and Ashley is really good looking. Come on, voters! At least we got to see Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen perform. And at least we can still look forward to Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and others next week. But this was a poor start for the viewing public. Did you agree with who was sent home? As you ponder that question, check out a few photos below from the first results show of season nine:

Kris Allen Sings ‘Let It Be’ On ‘American Idol’ For Haiti

Song will be available on iTunes with proceeds going to earthquake relief. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Last year’s “American Idol” champ, Kris Allen, paid a return visit to his old haunt Thursday night (February 25) to discuss his recent trip to earthquake-ravaged Haiti and perform on the show without being judged for the first time since his surprise win last year. Allen visited Haiti last week with the United Nations Foundation, and upon his return, he recorded a cover of the legendary Beatles ballad “Let It Be,” which he performed Thursday in front of footage from his trip. “There’s a lot of devastation, a lot of destruction … but there’s a lot of hope, there’s a lot of organizations there that are building things back, and I think it’s going to be better than it was,” Allen said about the conditions on the island. One of the big concerns now, Allen said, is the upcoming rainy season. “The rainy season is actually bad, because it comes, and there’s not a lot of shelter now, and the shelter they do have is not very waterproof,” he said. “And with water comes diseases and all that stuff, it’s really bad. So they need a lot of help, for sure.” Allen’s performance of “Let It Be” was immediately available on iTunes after the show, with all proceeds going to Haiti relief. Viewers were also encouraged to go to AmericanIdol.com to make credit-card donations or to text the word “Idol” to 20222 and reply “yes” when prompted to donate $10. Over footage of the destruction in Haiti and his time spent helping children on the island, Allen stood in a stark spotlight center stage, strumming his acoustic guitar and singing an emotional cover of the iconic rock ballad to the accompaniment of a grand piano. Before taking the stage, Allen talked to MTV News about how he hit upon covering the Beatles classic for the project. “It was actually because we were looking through [my] album and we were like, ‘What song could we sing?’ We can’t sing ‘Live Like We’re Dying,’ ” he explained of the single from his debut album. “And I didn’t feel like I connected with anything else that would inspire people to give something. … So I was like, ‘What can I do that would be moving to somebody?’ And my friend Cale [who played piano with Allen during the performance] actually was like, ‘What if you did “Let It Be?” ‘ I feel like it would be a really moving kind of thing.” Allen said the song has always touched him, whether it was the 1970 original from the band’s final studio album or the version in the 2007 Beatles tribute movie “Across the Universe.” “That song has so much power,” he said.
