American Idol: The Corrections [Recaps]

Well, that was more like it, no? After last week’s horrifying — truly horrifying! — bloodbath eliminations, yesterday we saw three deserving singtestants shoved into the bottom three and the worst of the bunch was sent home. I’m sure Lacey Brown is a perfectly nice person and all, but homegirl just did not have the chops to be among the Final 12 on America’s most celebrated electoral process. Many brilliant scientists have gone mad trying to decipher just how the Idol voting really works, so I won’t try to figure out why it was that Lacey and two deserving companions — Paige Miles and Whizzenpoof Spizzwinks — were in the bottom three this week and yet managed to squeak past three far more deserving contestants just seven days ago. But just know that it happened and that this is a good thing and hopefully things will progress in a similar fashion. It’s not too late to save America! Speaking of saving, they’re bringing back the Judges’ Save. Yeah, that old clam. The thing about the Judges’ Save is that it’s dumb. It’s just plain dumb. And it’s also kind of cruel to watch some never-gonna-be-rescued kid warble for their life while Simon and Randy and Ellen and that dung beetle pretend to seriously discuss whether or not they should keep her around. These people are judges on a reality show because they are not actors, so making them try to act once a week is an exercise in cruel futility. Mostly Simon just makes jokes and probably tells people little anecdotes about what Ryan did in the dressing rooms this morning, while Kara closes her eyes, squeezes them so so tight, and wishes that she was in the competition this year, she would do so well, just you see Mr. Fuller, just raise the age limit, just once, please Mr. Fuller? So that was that. I’m sure that terrified legions of Teen Texterz will now circle the giggle-wagons around Whizzenpoof and he will be carried, Hercules-like, up to the golden thrones of Olympus, borne on the zitty backs of Mallory and all her friends. Or I don’t know! Again, trying to find pattern or thread in American Idol voting is like searching for meaning in a Kara DioGuardi song. All you end up with is a bunch of mountains and stars and hopes and reaching and none of it makes much sense at all. Your lesbian aunt Karen David Cook came back and sang yet another strangely dated ditty, so that was good. When I went to the Idols Live! concert in Worcester, MA two frittered-away summers ago, he was acting like he was Bono or something. Standing on railings and raising his hands in the air as if he controlled the whims and shrieks of the universe, not just those of a few hundred teen New Englanders and they’re about-to-shoot-themselves parents at the Worcester Centrum. (I was there strictly for research/ironic purposes, I promise you. Also: Jason Castroooooooooo.) Anyway! Somebody named Orpheus or Orkin or something came out and screeched something at as for a while, so that was really unpleasant. And then with a great thudding and falling down the stairs came Ke$ha, stumbling like a bargain basement homemade drag Lady Gaga around the stage, yelling about various things and continuing to shill for the Jack Daniels corporation. Then people with giant TVs for heads came out and did a dance with her and if any parents were watching with their kids, they probably sighed and looked down at their daughter and her weird friend Mallory clasping their hands and swaying back and forth in delight and they felt the weary press of years and tastes and they thought about September girls and December boys, and somewhere up in the night sky a star fizzed and winked and the world was, as miraculously as ever, room enough for all of it.

American Idol Frowns on Lacey Brown

Following Tuesday night’s American Idol performances , and given how average a lot of them were, it isn’t surprising to see Lacey Brown go on last night’s results show. The pastor’s daughter from Texas got no love from the judges or the fans for her cover of “Ruby Tuesday,” landing in the bottom three with Tim Urban and Paige Miles. Urban would’ve been equally deserving of a pink slip, but this isn’t The Bachelor , where they make up rules on the fly. One stays, one goes. Nice knowing you, Lacey. Ryan announced the return of the “Judges Save” option, allowing the esteemed panel to reverse decisions if fans really, really screw up, but it was not used on Brown. Instead, she sang farewell to her attempt at stardom with Brandi Carlile’s “The Story,” an emotional track prominently featured on Grey’s Anatomy a few seasons ago. Lacey Brown bids American Idol farewell. If Brown and her bottom three cohorts underscored anything, it was how dramatic the dropoff is in talent from the top handful to the rest of the pack. Here’s how we see the remaining finalists going forward, grouped into tiers … The Contenders Crystal Bowersox Siobhan Magnus Michael Lynche Casey James Should Hang Around Awhile Didi Benami Lee DeWyze Andrew Garcia Bottom Three Calling Any Day Now Paige Miles Aaron Kelly Katie Stevens Tim Urban

‘American Idol’ Experts Predict Who Will Go Home Wednesday Night

After her lackluster ‘Ruby Tuesday,’ it could be end of the line for Lacey Brown. By Gil Kaufman Lacey Brown Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage For the most part, the top 12 finalists on “American Idol” stepped up their game for their first performance on the big “Idol” stage on Tuesday night . Nobody flamed out completely, succumbed to a bout of nerves, blew a lyric or otherwise face-planted while singing the songs of the Rolling Stones. But, alas, someone has to go home every week and while our “Idol” experts have had differing opinions over the past few weeks about who would be sent packing, they were unanimous in their feeling that Wednesday night’s elimination show will likely prove to be the end of the line for flame-haired Texan Lacey Brown. “I think it’s finally the end of the line for Lacey,” said MJ Santilli of leading “Idol” blog MJsBigBlog.com . “[Her] quasi-countrified take on ‘Ruby Tuesday’ left the judges scratching their heads. Simon said she’s been ‘over-thinking’ her performances. But, whatever the problem is, she’s never seemed entirely comfortable onstage.” Buried in the middle of the lineup, Santilli predicted Brown’s forgettable performance will probably get overlooked in favor of the somewhat similar Didi Benami, who stumbled a bit during “Play With Fire,” but got a more sympathetic reaction from the judges. MTV News’ own 60-second man, Jim Cantiello, said that while it’s always hard to guess who will make up the bottom three each week during the finals, he tagged Brown, Katie Stevens and fallen former front-runner Andrew Garcia as likely candidates. “Common sense would put sleepy Lacey Brown, forgettable Katie Stevens and pitchy Andrew Garcia in the bottom three,” he said. “But I’m putting my money on Casey James, by virtue of process of elimination.” Cantiello’s logic? The “Idol” obsessive explained that Brown and Garcia have massive hometown fanbases — Brown’s apparently made up of Texas churchgoers and Garcia’s of his thousands of YouTube fans — and good-girl high schooler Stevens has the “grandma vote” locked up. “So, that leaves Casey, who was especially forgettable, having gone third in the show’s two-hour lineup. That’s a pretty brutal spot to be in.” For Cantiello, James’ Dixie-fried guitar-rock take on “It’s All Over Now” felt small and lacked the crucial “wow” moment the judges keep saying they’re looking for. “Michael Sarver’s early elimination notwithstanding, country-style singers often fare well on the show,” he said. “But I think country fans might be gravitating towards Aaron Kelly instead of Casey. I also have a sneaking suspicion that the ‘cougar’ ‘Idol’ fans are slowly migrating to Lee Dewyze’s camp, and Lee definitely outperformed Casey Tuesday night.” Cantiello argued that going down with a song titled “It’s All Over Now” is almost too perfect for a farewell sing-off. Hedging his bets, Jim said if it’s not James, it will probably be Brown, who is trying everyone’s patience with her too-similar performances. “Her ‘Ruby Tuesday’ was a fair attempt, but all her performances are blending together these days.” Related Videos Meet The ‘American Idol’ Top 12 ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Party ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances

‘American Idol’ Top 12 cheat sheet looks at Brown’s strengths and weaknesses. By Jim Cantiello Lacey Brown at the “American Idol” top 12 party Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its Top 12 Finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each candidate’s journey thus far. He also got the “Idol” hopefuls to weigh in when he caught up with them at Thursday night’s Top 12 Party in Hollywood. Lacey Brown With her fiery red hair, icy cool blue eyes and a flair for animal prints, “American Idol” contestant Lacey Brown stands out in a lineup. And when she opens her mouth, Lacey gets even more interesting. In a 90-second performance, Brown’s high-pitched tone can recall everyone from Patsy Cline to Gwen Stefani to Cyndi Lauper. Best Performance : Lacey’s recent Brandi Carlile performance proved that the girl with the squeaky voice is capable of quiet triumphs. Sitting still on the side of the stage, crooning “The Story” like she lived every word, Lacey finally showed America why she deserved a spot in the Top 24. Weakest Performance : A bout of nerves turned Lacey’s “Landslide” into a natural disaster. “Idol” is lucky Fleetwood Mac didn’t call and ask for their song rights back. Sad Backstory : Lacey just missed out on being part of the eighth season of “Idol,” where she was cut in favor of another offbeat pretty girl, Megan Joy. ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Party Why She Will Win : Lacey’s ability to play to the camera is effortless. Her hypnotic gaze and irresistible smile lull you in and make you forget you’re watching “American Idol.” Why She Will Lose : Lacey Brown’s performances may be too subtle for the “Idol” stage. When Siobhan Magnus is wailing like a banshee, Lacey’s sleepy offerings run the risk of putting viewers to sleep. What She Should Sing : I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Lacey should study Yael Naim’s music-box version of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” On Her Strategy To Navigate The Upcoming Theme Weeks : “What I try to do is stay true to myself, stay true to my voice … pick songs that I really like to perform and be creative with the arrangements and really just do it for the people watching, because that’s what’s really important.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. American Idol Finalists: Party Time!

While fans argue about the final 12 on American Idol ( Paige Miles over Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott? Really?!? ), this season’s recently-named finalists attended a party in their honor last night. Matt Giraud, Scott MacIntyre and past contestants were also on hand, as were Cory Monteith and members of the Glee cast . But the event was all about Crystal Bowersox , Michael Lynche and company. That pair of singers, two of the only contenders in an otherwise mediocre field, celebrated with an airplane ride at the shindig: Click on the photos below for more looks at the finalists posing on the red carpet: [Photos: Splash News]

Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox Lead Ladies Night on American Idol

It turns out the male favorite and the female favorite on American Idol have something in common: an electric guitar. Last week, Casey James rocked out with this instrument. Last night, similarly, Crystal Bowersox broke it out and, once again, put on the best performance of the evening. But Siobhan Magnus stepped up and sent a message to Crystal: Not so fast! My unique look and sound, combined with confidence and a great voice, will make this a two-woman race! Below, we rank the most recent performances by the ladies and ask readers to name their favorite… Crystal Bowersox : We hate to sound like Kara, but Crystal knows exactly who she is as an artist. She strums along and turns hit songs into her own creations. Siobhan Magnus : Different from Crystal in that we have no idea what to expect each week, but similar in terms of her stage presence and comfort in her ability. Didi Benami : Our favorite after the Hollywood rounds. Finally put on a performance worthy of the finals. Lilly Scott : Yes, it would be nice to hear a modern single from Scott. But she still stands out for her look and her sound. Katelyn Epperly : The earth didn’t move under our feet from this somewhat cheesy rendition. But we’ll be shocked, and sad, if she doesn’t move on. Katie Stevens : Why are the judges so focused on Katie’s age? All their critiques focus on the fact that she’s 17. Relax and just listen to her sing, please. Lacey Brown : Better than the previous two weeks, but also forgettable. Can we get rid of her now? Paige Miles : Solid voice, boring performances. The most likely to be eliminated this week. Who was your favorite? Who would you send home?

Crystal Bowersox Rocks, and Other American Idol Women Sing Well

She went from the hospital bed to the American Idol stage to the leader of the season nine pack in just 24 hours. Indeed, we aren’t the first website to shower Crystal Bowersox with praise – and we definitely won’t be the last – but it’s well-deserved. On a night of live performances that overshadowed the guys’ lackluster efforts the evening before, Bowersox recovered from a dangerous illness and led the way. We run down the top 10 below… Crystal Bowersox : She gets points for showing up and for not playing the sympathy card. But especially for her unique rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long As I Can See the Light.” Lilly Scott : A close second. Challenged herself with the Sam Cooke classic “A Change is Gonna Come” and was even better than last week. Love her confidence in just who she is. Michelle Delamor : Note to Todrick Hall: this is how you re-arrange a song! Michelle comes across as a professional singer and turned a Creed rock single into a ballad. Siobhan Magnus : The anti-Aretha Franklin sung Franklin’s “Think” and showcased her versatility. The place went nuts when she hit her high notes. Katelyn Epperly : Ellen was off base with this critique. The song was supposed to be slow, and the use of the piano proved that Katelyn has multiple sides to her. Katie Stevens : She has a great voice and a great personality. The judges have to get over the fact that she’s 17 and just let her sing. Paige Miles : It’s always daring to take a song by an American Idol winner, but Miles did Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away” sort of proud. Definitely needed more of an edge to it. Didi Benami : We felt terrible for when the tears welled up during the judges’ criticism. But “Lean On Me?” Really? It’s impossible to make that song your own at this point. Lacey Brown: Simply not up to par, vocals-wise, with the other contestants. Haeley Vaughn: We’re all for being happy, but her constant smiling freaks us out. She’s like a doll of some kind.mi It’s a clear choice, in our view: Lacey and Haeley should go home tonight. What do you think?

American Idol Makes First Four Cuts

Sheryl Crow once crooned that “the first cut is the deepest.” For American Idol last night, the first four cuts were the most erroneous. Let’s analyze each below: Joe Munoz over Tim Urban?!? The latter might be cute, but did you see the look of shock on his face after Ryan told Tim he was safe? Did viewers really do Urban a favor by keeping him around and ensuring his weak vocal skills will be torn apart again and again until America comes to its senses? Tyler Grady over Jermaine Sellers?!? We weren’t fans of Grady’s 1970s-inspired gimmick, either. But he made a great point (which Simon acknowledged, if you read his lips) about the judges selecting him for the semifinals… but then jumping all over him for the same schtick that got him there. It would have been nice to have seen if Tyler had more to offer going forward, especially compared to the over-emotional nonsense that Sellers through our way this week. Janell Wheeler over Haeley Vaughn?!? Yes, Wheeler chose the wrong song. She’s not a rocker. But Vaughn comes across like some sort of frightening, dressed-up doll. She just looks awkward on stage and her rendition of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” wasn’t strong. Ashley Rodriguez over Lacey Brown?!? Brown was really bad and Ashley is really good looking. Come on, voters! At least we got to see Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen perform. And at least we can still look forward to Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and others next week. But this was a poor start for the viewing public. Did you agree with who was sent home? As you ponder that question, check out a few photos below from the first results show of season nine:

Tim Urban Replaces Chris Golightly, American Idol Rounds Out Season Nine Semifinalists

American Idol rounded out its top 24 last night, which was great news for two dozen aspiring singers – but bad news for Chris Golightly. One of the first names to get leaked as a season nine semifinalist, Golightly was disqualified at the last minute due to a contract he had signed with a boy band. There’s controversy brewing over whether it’s still valid, but Ryan Seacrest Tweeted last night: “Been determined that Chris Golightly is ineligible to continue on IDOL, contestant Tim Urban has replaced Golightly as part of the Top 24″ In addition to the seven singers that advanced through Hollywood on Tuesday night, the following crooners still have their American Idol dreams alive: • Janell Wheeler • Tyler Grady • Lacey Brown • Ashley Rodriguez • Alex Lambert • Joe Mu

Lacey Brown: Back For More on American Idol

When Lacey Brown auditioned for American Idol last year, she sat next to eventual finalist Megan Joy in the cut room and was told by Randy Jackson that it was the end of the road. Ha! Shows what Randy knows. Brown is back on the show, receiving a golden ticket following her latest try out in Orlando
