‘American Idol’ Castoff Haeley Vaughn Says Miley Cyrus Is An ‘Icon’

‘I’m a really big fan of Disney and Disney Channel, so hopefully there’s something there that I can work on,’ she says. By Katie Byrne Haeley Vaughn Photo: Fox Haeley Vaughn’s smile was infectious, but her uneven singing left the “American Idol” judges (and fans) frustrated. After her shaky performance of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” Vaughn was eliminated Thursday, along with Jermaine Sellers , John Park and Michelle Delamor. Will the 16-year-old’s country/pop dreams still come true? We talked to the high-schooler from Fort Collins, Colorado, on Friday (March 5) to talk about that and more. Q : What did you think when Kara suggested you take a year to strengthen your vocal skills? A : I kind of agreed with her. I think that more experience and more time working on my vocals would be good. I think experience is always better, especially since I’m only 16 and this is the first big thing that I’ve done ever. I’ve never performed in front of millions of people before; I’ve never even performed in front of 100. I think it’s always good to get more experience and work on the things that I need to work on. Q : The contestants seem to be particularly nervous this year. Is the anxiety level really high? A : The first week was really tough. We were all super nervous and scared and worried about our song choice. The first week, we were all just freaking out and trying to pick the right songs and make sure America would like them. Nerves are always gonna play a huge factor in what we do on the show. Q : Why didn’t you sing any country songs during your first two semifinal performances? A : The songs I chose, I made them kind of pop/country. I wanted to not have to sing Martina McBride every week just because I wanted to be a country artist. When Carrie Underwood was on her season, she didn’t sing only country songs. She was very versatile, and she chose songs of a different genre and she made them fit her country style. And that was my whole thing that I did too. Q : Do you think the judges have been particularly rough this year? A : Simon was definitely really harsh this season. But, I mean, he has reason to be. … Sometimes he should soften the blow a little bit, but that’s Simon Cowell. He’s been like that for nine years. Q : Are you going to go back to school or focus on your career? A : I’m definitely gonna keep working on my career. I’m gonna keep singing. Hopefully, doors will open up for me. I’m a really big fan of Disney and Disney Channel, so hopefully there’s something there that I can work on. I’m just gonna keep working on my career and doing what I love to do. Q : What kind of career do you see yourself having? A : Miley Cyrus is one of my icons. Oh my gosh, I love her…. Country music is definitely my genre, pop/country. And playing my guitar is awesome. Yeah, if I were given the chance to do that, I would definitely jump on it. Q : Have you had a chance to talk to any “American Idol” alumni to get advice? A : I talked to Allison [Iraheta] for a bit when she came and she performed the first week. And she just told me to stay true to who I am and keep doing my thing and keep doing one genre of music and just be really strong and confident. Were you sad to see Haeley go? ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Alex Lambert, Crystal Bowersox Dominate Top 20

John Park, Haeley Vaughn, Michelle Delamor and Jermaine Sellers bid farewell as quirky girls take the lead. By Jim Cantiello Alex Lambert Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week’s “American Idol” had it all! Schedule changes, glass-shattering high notes and cameos from Jesus (and Vera Wang). Week two of this year’s “Idol” semifinals will be remembered as the week that quirky girls emerged as the breakout stars of season nine. Platinum-haired Lilly Scott , unpredictable banshee Siobhan Magnus and aspiring recording engineer Katelyn Epperly all put their own unique stamps on popular songs. But it was Crystal Bowersox who dominated headlines — not only when her hospitalization for complications from diabetes caused a last-minute boy/girl schedule switcheroo, but when she returned to the “Idol” stage Wednesday with a passionate take on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “As Long as I Can See the Light.” On Tuesday night, the boys’ standings were turned upside down. Last week’s train wreck, Alex Lambert, shot to the front of the pack with an irresistible segment that had the mumbly teenager overcoming his stomach-turning stage fright. Meanwhile, early season fave Andrew Garcia stumbled badly with a forgettable James Morrison cover. (Note to “Idol” contestants: Avoid singing while sitting on stools.) Thursday night’s results show opened with the top 20 lip-synching (terribly) and acting out the lyrics to the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.” Later, season eight’s polarizing widower, Danny Gokey, returned to perform a song from his brand new country album. An especially manic, quick-talking interview with Ryan Seacrest followed. ‘American Idol’ Season 9 Performances In the end, Seacrest read the names of four more eliminated contestants: a cappella group member John Park, Creed-covering Michelle Delamor, 16-year-old country kewpie doll Haeley Vaughn and cocky onesie-rockin’ Jermaine Sellers, who was flabbergasted Tuesday night after the judges called him out for his wonky vocals. Though he insisted that Jesus would protect him from elimination, Jermaine quickly learned that his Homeboy had different plans for him. For those of you keeping score, seven out of the eight contestants eliminated so far this season have been minorities. Stay classy, America! But what are you waiting for? Crystal Bowersox Rocks, and Other American Idol Women Sing Well

She went from the hospital bed to the American Idol stage to the leader of the season nine pack in just 24 hours. Indeed, we aren’t the first website to shower Crystal Bowersox with praise – and we definitely won’t be the last – but it’s well-deserved. On a night of live performances that overshadowed the guys’ lackluster efforts the evening before, Bowersox recovered from a dangerous illness and led the way. We run down the top 10 below… Crystal Bowersox : She gets points for showing up and for not playing the sympathy card. But especially for her unique rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long As I Can See the Light.” Lilly Scott : A close second. Challenged herself with the Sam Cooke classic “A Change is Gonna Come” and was even better than last week. Love her confidence in just who she is. Michelle Delamor : Note to Todrick Hall: this is how you re-arrange a song! Michelle comes across as a professional singer and turned a Creed rock single into a ballad. Siobhan Magnus : The anti-Aretha Franklin sung Franklin’s “Think” and showcased her versatility. The place went nuts when she hit her high notes. Katelyn Epperly : Ellen was off base with this critique. The song was supposed to be slow, and the use of the piano proved that Katelyn has multiple sides to her. Katie Stevens : She has a great voice and a great personality. The judges have to get over the fact that she’s 17 and just let her sing. Paige Miles : It’s always daring to take a song by an American Idol winner, but Miles did Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away” sort of proud. Definitely needed more of an edge to it. Didi Benami : We felt terrible for when the tears welled up during the judges’ criticism. But “Lean On Me?” Really? It’s impossible to make that song your own at this point. Lacey Brown: Simply not up to par, vocals-wise, with the other contestants. Haeley Vaughn: We’re all for being happy, but her constant smiling freaks us out. She’s like a doll of some kind.mi It’s a clear choice, in our view: Lacey and Haeley should go home tonight. What do you think?

American Idol Makes First Four Cuts

Sheryl Crow once crooned that “the first cut is the deepest.” For American Idol last night, the first four cuts were the most erroneous. Let’s analyze each below: Joe Munoz over Tim Urban?!? The latter might be cute, but did you see the look of shock on his face after Ryan told Tim he was safe? Did viewers really do Urban a favor by keeping him around and ensuring his weak vocal skills will be torn apart again and again until America comes to its senses? Tyler Grady over Jermaine Sellers?!? We weren’t fans of Grady’s 1970s-inspired gimmick, either. But he made a great point (which Simon acknowledged, if you read his lips) about the judges selecting him for the semifinals… but then jumping all over him for the same schtick that got him there. It would have been nice to have seen if Tyler had more to offer going forward, especially compared to the over-emotional nonsense that Sellers through our way this week. Janell Wheeler over Haeley Vaughn?!? Yes, Wheeler chose the wrong song. She’s not a rocker. But Vaughn comes across like some sort of frightening, dressed-up doll. She just looks awkward on stage and her rendition of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” wasn’t strong. Ashley Rodriguez over Lacey Brown?!? Brown was really bad and Ashley is really good looking. Come on, voters! At least we got to see Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen perform. And at least we can still look forward to Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and others next week. But this was a poor start for the viewing public. Did you agree with who was sent home? As you ponder that question, check out a few photos below from the first results show of season nine:

Andrew Garcia, Crystal Bowersox Emerge As ‘American Idol’ Frontrunners In Hollywood

After group night, Katie Stevens, Didi Benami, Haeley Vaughn are also drawing attention. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Yes, the first two rounds of Hollywood week have just ended, and there’s plenty of drama that will undoubtedly unfold before we make it to the top 24. But that has not stopped us from tagging some of the breakout stars that have emerged so far on season nine of “American Idol.” If you can survive the dreaded group round and still have the judges smiling at you, you’ve already won the first battle, and these singers seem poised to rise to the top … for now anyway. Among those who appear to have skated through the first few rounds with nary a scratch is Andrew Garcia . The sweet young dad with the neck tattoo, former gangbanger parents and a buttery soul vocal attack has already proven that he’s got that certain Adam Lambert-esque shine thanks to his radical acoustic reworking of former judge Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” If this kid doesn’t make it to the top 24, we’ll be shocked. Another seemingly certain shoo-in is dreadlocked single mom Crystal Bowersox . The Chicagoan with the Janis Joplin growl, guitar chops and a winning personality, got a rare thumbs-up sign on Tuesday when the audience joined in and provided impromptu backing vocals on her cover of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” which ended in a standing ovation. With her Colbie Caillat-like groove, Los Angeles native Didi Benami is also an early audience favorite, and it probably didn’t hurt that she covered a Kara DioGuardi-penned tune, Katharine McPhee’s “Terrified,” on Tuesday night and killed it. She’s doing “Idol” in memory of a friend who passed away, and her Carrie Underwood-esque good looks and sunny attitude could take her far. Haeley Vaughn seems determined to become the first black female pop country artist to break through on the show. Rocker mom Mary Powers appears to be a bit controlling and hard to work with, but works a gritty, Pink-live vibe that has a certain charm. And teen Katie Stevens is emerging as a judges’ favorite. DioGuardi told her she could win it all after the group performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One.” The judges also seem to like Tampa’s all-American blond Janell Wheeler — who reportedly dated Florida Gators legend (and controversial Super Bowl ad star) Tim Tebow — and her Sheryl Crow-meets-Pink take on Estelle’s “American Boy” was impressive. Cougar bait Casey James , the hunky cowboy working a nice-guy singer/songwriter vibe, seems promising. As does back-flipping, former Fantasia co-star Todrick Hall , who clearly has the creative chops to survive but is starting to come off as a little gimmicky. With his floppy, Tiger Beat -ready hair and acoustic emo vibe, Dallas Christian singer Tim Urban has the look that could net him the David Archuleta vote, but his vocals may not be strong enough to keep him in the running. Though she’s not gotten much screen time, Georgia glamour puss Artheria “Theri” Harden made an impression with her liquid leather getup, candy-colored bob and strong R&B diva vocals on Wednesday night, as did her Destiny’s Wild group mate, scratchy voiced soul barker Siobhan Magnus . Magnus, a quirky Massachusetts 19-year-old, uses her powerful pipes in a band called Lunar Valve. Who knows? They could all be gone next week, or one of them could be your next “American Idol.” Which “Idol” hopeful is your favorite so far? Did we miss anyone in this list? Sound off in the comments!
