Israeli Army use Facebook to track down female draft dodgers

Facebook stalking is now being used as a tool by the Israeli army to expose women who lie about their religious background in order to avoid military service.According to reports more than 1,000 women have been tracked down after they falsely claimed they were exempt from the draft because they were Orthodox Jews.Military service is compulsory for most Israelis over the age of 18 – three years for men and two years for women. But to avoid having to join people can cite a variety of reasons – one of them is an exemption for Orthodox, or religiously observant, Jews.Using Facebook, the Israeli army is checking women's status updates and photos to confirm if such claims are genuine.A senior Israeli officer said they had found examples of young women who had declared themselves exempt posting photographs of themselves on Facebook in immodest clothing, or eating in non-kosher restaurants.Others were caught by responding to party invitations on Friday nights – the Jewish Sabbath. It is estimated that more than 35% of Jewish women in Israel do not join the army, because they say they are religious – but the army suspects that thousands of them are, in fact secular and eligible to serve. added by: sbacker

Vintage Circuit Boards Transformed Into Incredible Sculptures

Images via Wired We’ve seen our fair share of art made from circuit boards — even a Mona Lisa made of motherboards . But the sculptures by artist Theo Kamecke take the cake. Using the beauty often overlooked in patterns and colors of circuitry, he creates some gorgeous pieces worthy of galleries. And even though the raw material is very much man-made, Kamecke says it still conjures up the beauty we see in who… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Soldiers Punished For Not Attending Christian Concert

For the past several years, two U.S. Army posts in Virginia, Fort Eustis and Fort Lee, have been putting on a series of what are called Commanding General’s “Spiritual Fitness” Concerts. As I’ve written in a number of other posts, “spiritual fitness” is just the military’s new term for promoting religion, particularly evangelical Christianity. And this concert series is no different. On May 13, 2010, about eighty soldiers, stationed at Fort Eustis while attending a training course, were punished for opting out of attending one of these Christian concerts. The headliner at this concert was a Christian rock band called BarlowGirl, a band that describes itself as taking “an aggressive, almost warrior-like stance when it comes to spreading the gospel and serving God.” The Commanding General’s Spiritual Fitness Concert Series was the brainchild of Maj. Gen. James E. Chambers, who, according to an article on the Army-mil website, “was reborn as a Christian” at the age of sixteen. According to the article, Chambers held the first concert at Fort Lee within a month of becoming the commanding general of the Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee in June 2008. But he had already started the series at Fort Eustis, as the previous commanding general there. The concerts have continued at Fort Eustis under the new commanding general, as well as spreading to Fort Lee under Maj. Gen. Chambers. The concerts are also promoted to the airmen on Langley Air Force Base, which is now part of Joint Base Langley-Eustis. In the Army.mil article, Maj. Gen. Chambers was quoted as saying, “The idea is not to be a proponent for any one religion. It’s to have a mix of different performers with different religious backgrounds.” But there has been no “mix of different performers with different religious backgrounds” at these concerts. Every one of them has had evangelical Christian performers, who typically not only perform their music but give their Christian testimony and read from the Bible in between songs. ———————————–SR————————————— I wonder if the 3 little girls that make up BarlowGirl told the soldiers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress how God had cured them of EATING DISORDERS ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uju2JAJqvfs&feature=related added by: Stoneyroad

Toy soldiers run afoul of school’s weapons ban

Christan Morales says her son just wanted to honor American troops when he wore a hat to school decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures. But the hat ran afoul of the district's no-weapons policy because the toy soldiers were carrying tiny weapons. “His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate because it had guns,” Morales said. Morales' 8-year-old son, David, was assigned to make a hat for the day when his second-grade class would met their pen pals from another school. She and her son came up with an idea to add patriotic decorations to a camouflage hat. Earlier this week, the Tiogue School in Coventry sent the cap home with David at the end of the day after concluding it violated a zero-tolerance policy for weapons. The principal told the family that the hat would be fine if David replaced the Army men holding weapons with ones that didn't have any, according to Superintendent Kenneth R. Di Pietro. Morales said the family had only one Army figure without a weapon (he was carrying binoculars), so David wore a plain baseball cap on the day of the visit. “Nothing was being done to limit patriotism, creativity, other than find an alternative to a weapon,” Di Pietro said. The district does not allow images of weapons or drugs on clothing. For example, a student would not be permitted to wear a shirt with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it, the superintendent said. The principal “wasn't denying the patriotism,” he said. “That just is the wrong and unfair image of one of our finest principals.” Morales said her son was inspired to honor the military after striking up a friendship last summer with a neighbor in the Army. Banning the hat “sent the wrong message to the kids, because it wasn't in any way to cause any harm to anyone,” she said. “You're talking about Army men. This wasn't about guns.” http://www.optimum.net/News/AP/Article?fmId=5128267 added by: Stoneyroad
