TRIBECA: Clint Eastwood Tells Darren Aronofsky It Would Be ‘Great’ To Be A 100 Year-Old Filmmaker

“I met you once for a handshake and I was terrified,”  Darren Aronofsky  told Clint Eastwood during their Tribeca Talks Directors Series discussion on Saturday. “I’m still a little terrified.” The two men chatted (fittingly, in directors’ chairs) following the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story , a 60-minute documentary about the actor-turned-filmmaker’s career behind the camera. Although the 82-year-old Eastwood is almost double the age of Aronofsky, it was The Wrestler director who walked with a cane. He lowered himself into his seat while Eastwood gestured to the applauding crowd and, with a smile on his face, told them to “knock it off.” The man who once played Dirty Harry  kept up the charm offensive throughout the conversation and didn’t address any empty chairs. The Academy Award-winning director and Academy Award-nominated one discussed a number of topics, including directing children, working with actors, working with digital cameras and sustaining a passion for filmmaking. On that last subject, Eastwood said, “I don’t think you ever lose it.” He then referenced 104-year-old Portuguese director and screenwriter Manoel Cândido Pinto de Oliveira . ( The Strange Case of Angelica ). “That’s always everybody’s dream,” Eastwood said. “Wouldn’t it be great to be 105 and still be making films?” He dubbed this hope “the ultimate optimism.” More wisdom and anecdotes from Eastwood include: “You have to fight for what you want, for what you believe in.” “A director has to be the most malleable person on set.” “Directing is having your hands on everything. It’s the ultimate power trip.” “If [filmmaking] was that painful, I’d consider myself somewhat of a masochist.” When Aronofsky asked Eastwood the first thing he does upon arriving at a new set or location, the movie-making veteran replied, “I was thinking of throwing up . For some reason that came into my mind. We won’t print that.” Too late. Darren Aronofsky’s Noah Will Flood Theaters in 2014

This just in: Paramount and New Regency will release Darren Aronofsky’s Biblical tale Noah on March 28, 2014. No filming date has been announced just yet, but that gives the Black Swan helmer just about two years to get Russell Crowe in gear as the eponymous wino/boat-builder; Aronofsky will direct from a script credited to himself, Ari Handel, and John Logan. The date puts Noah opening right before Captain America 2 , which means… superhero season will start even earlier in ’14, kinda. I know, I know: But when will we see a big-screen adaptation of Fightin’ Around the World ? [ Deadline ]

And Now, Darren Aronofsky Directs J. Lo In A Commercial For Kohl’s

When Darren Aronofsky directed a sumptuous Revlon commercial for mascara last year I called it his “least-daring work to date,” but now comes a new project to trump that dubious accomplishment. Behold, the Oscar-nominated Black Swan director’s gripping ad for Kohl’s department store featuring J. Lo singing and dancing to a Kiki Dee cover song, a video that makes Jessica Biel plumping her lashes look like Requiem for a Dream . Kohl’s “Classic. Remixed” from H.K. McCANN on Vimeo . Oh, Darren. Can we go back to those meth PSAs and pretend this never happened? [ MediaBistro via Vulture ]

Oscar Nominee Natalie Portman Praises ‘Black Swan’ Director

Best Actress nominee says nod is ‘a wonderful culmination of the 10-year journey with Darren [Aronofsky].’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Kara Warner Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight For those who’ve been following the awards season, it’s not too big of a surprise that “Black Swan” earned five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Natalie Portman), and Best Director (Darren Aronofsky). Portman had already won significant recognition for her role in the ballet thriller at the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards and 10 regional critics’ awards associations. So while her first Academy Award nomination may not have been unexpected, the actress says she’s humbled by the honor. “I am so honored and grateful to the Academy for this recognition. It is a wonderful culmination of the 10-year journey with Darren to make this film,” Portman told MTV News in a statement. “Making ‘Black Swan’ is already the most meaningful experience of my career, and the passion shown for the film has completed the process of communication between artists and audience. I am so thankful for the support we have received and I share this honor with the entire cast and crew of the film, especially Darren Aronofsky.” This is also Aronofsky’s first Oscar nomination. (His 2008 film “The Wrestler” earned Mickey Rourke the Best Actor award for his performance.) Aronofsky has always seemed to target a niche audience with films like “Pi,” “Requiem for a Dream” and “The Fountain,” so producer Brian Oliver said he was glad that Aronofsky was getting much-deserved recognition. “I’m really happy for Darren. Darren is a visionary filmmaker and it’s finally nice that they recognized him,” Oliver told MTV News. “It’s also interesting to see how well the movie is being received internationally and in Europe, with the 12 BAFTA nominations and the box-office success, so it’s another kudos to Darren, appealing to a wide audience outside a small niche.” With all of the recognition “Black Swan” has been receiving, it was a bit surprising that the film’s impressive range of supporting actresses — Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder and Barbara Hershey — didn’t get any nods. (Kunis was nominated for a Supporting Actress Golden Globe, though she didn’t win.) Oliver theorized that the actresses may have been overlooked because their performances didn’t get enough early praise. “As we saw the race went on, all of our supporting actresses’ names were moving up the list, and maybe the recognition started a little too late for Barbara but she definitely ended up being a contender. She did an amazing job. I think if we had another few weeks before nominations, she would have gotten it and maybe Mila as well,” the producer said. “Maybe the argument too is we split votes. I think a lot of people voted for Mila, a lot of people voted for Barbara, which is great, it’s another testament to Darren, but it probably split their chances.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Black Swan.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
