John Hostetter Dies; Murphy Brown Actor Was 69

John Hostetter – a character actor best known for his time on the popular long-running sitcom Murphy Brown – has passed away at the age of 69. Hostetter’s family says he had been battling cancer for several years. In 60 episodes of Murphy Brown , Hostetter played John, the levelheaded stage manager of the fictional show-within-a-show, FYI. He racked up dozens of other and television credits over the years, including parts on  NYPD Blue , MacGyver , L.A. Law , ER , Family Ties , and G.I. Joe . His film credits include  Into the Night , Heartbreak Ridge , Beverly Hills Cop II , No Way Out and Leonard Part 6 , opposite Bill Cosby. Hostetter is also well-known to Muppets fans for his role in the cult favorite DVD Kermit’s Swampland . The Brooklyn native, who grew up in Hanover, Maryland, got his start on the stage. Hostetter reportedly wowed audiences in a 1971 production of Waiting For Godot , in which he co-starred with a young Christopher Reeve. But it wasn’t until 1988 that Hostetter rose to national prominence after being cast on Brown – one of the most popular and acclaimed sitcoms of its time. The show won’t be found in many syndicated markets these days, as its topical, political humor made it very much a product of its era. During its ten-season run on CBS, however, the series was regarded as a ground-breaking television achievement. A sitcom that skewered, with equal aplomb, the worlds of Washington and TV news, Brown helped paved the way for politically-charged scripted series, as well as left-leaning late night shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report . It’s difficult to overstate the show’s influence, and while he was never a principal cast member, Hostetter was a favorite amongst fans. While Brown ‘s political commentary helped it win over critics, the purely comedic scenes, of the variety that so often featured Hostetter, were essential to making a commercial hit. Sofia Richie: Justin Bieber is Very "Special" to Me

Sofia Richie has broken her silence when it comes to Justin Bieber. It’s true: although Richie and Bieber have been dating for a number of weeks now, the 18-year old model has never really commented publicly about the singer before. She’s just posed alongside him for a number of cozy Instagram photos is all. To wit: And to wit again: Richie and Bieber went public with their romance about a month ago, as she traveled all the way to Tokyo with the singer for segments of his world tour. The two walked around the street, hung out in a hotel and shared many of these experiences on social media. This resulted in an unfortunate, albeit expected, backlash, with Bieber followers not just insulting Richie… but actually threatening her life. Bieber tried to calm down the madness by telling his fans to leave Richie alone or else he would make his Instagram account private. This announcement backfired, however, after Selena Gomez jumped in to Justin’s Comments section and told him to just keep his private life private. She later apologized for the inappropriate message, but the damage had already been done. Annoyed at the negative attention, Bieber took it one step further: he left Instagram for a number of weeks. Everything became a mess, basically, just because Justin Bieber found a new girlfriend. But this hasn’t seemed to put a damper on the romance with Richie. The teenager is featured on the cover of this month’s Billboard, bringing Bieber up with the publication and making it clear that something is happening between them. “We have a special relationship. Justin is very easy to talk to, and that’s hard to find with people in Los Angeles,” Richie tells the magazine. She doesn’t elaborate, but she doesn’t really have to, either. Sofia Richie, who is officially old enough for Bieber to bang , is admitting here that she’s dating Justin Bieber. And Bieber seems very happy about that. And what else really matters? View Slideshow: Sofia Richie: Meet Justin Bieber’s Underage New Squeeze If you’re a fan of Bieber, you should want only good things for him. We’re sorry to break the bad news to you but did you really expect to marry him? If not, just be content that he’s currently at peace and spending time with someone who appreciates his good looks and unique gifts. In the issue, Richie also addresses some of the online bullying she’s faced as her romance with the superstar has grown more intense. “I remember the paparazzi and the sh-t people would say to [sister Nicole], and she wouldn’t respond,” Richie says. “I’m going to be real with you: It. Doesn’t. Bother. Me. As long as I’m happy.” We love that attitude. And we love how Richie has apparently chosen to respond to the paparazzi .

In the latest issue of Billboard , Justin Bieber talks openly for the first time about his split from Selena Gomez . With rumors flying over Gomez seeking revenge via future songs, and with Bieber just releasing a breakup anthem titled ” Nothing Like This ,” the young artist is surprisingly candid in his interview with the magazine. “I’m not in the happiest place that I’ve ever been,” Bieber admits. “I’m trying to get through what I’m going through. I have my really close friends to cheer me up and keep me going.” Justin is also aware of the chatter out there, but asks fans not to pay attention to any of it. “There’s so many rumors,” he said. “People say I call Selena every day and she won’t pick up the phone or I’m chasing her down, and these are all fake stories.” What is next for the superstar? It doesn’t sound like he and Gomez will be giving it another try any time soon. But it also doesn’t sound like he’ll let that keep him down. “I don’t have any regrets. I live and learn. My mom says, ‘You got to learn the hard way, don’t you?’ That’s me. I learn the hard way. But it’s about how I pick myself up and be better and stronger.”

George McGovern Dies; Former Presidential Candidate Was 90

George McGovern has died. The former presidential candidate and U.S. Senator was 90. McGovern passed away early Sunday at a hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D., his home state. Steve Hildebrand, a spokesman for the family, said in a statement to NBC News: “Our wonderful father, George McGovern passed away peacefully at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by our family and life-long friends. “We are blessed to know that our father lived a long, successful and productive life advocating for the hungry, being a progressive voice for millions and fighting for peace.” McGovern was a pilot in World War II who became an early critic of the Vietnam War and a leader of the Democrats’ liberal wing. He served in the Senate from 1963-1981. He ran for president three times, failing to win the Democratic nomination in 1968 and 1984. In 1972, he was the party’s candidate against incumbent Richard Nixon. He challenged Nixon on a platform opposing the war in Vietnam, but suffered one of the most lopsided defeats in history, winning only one state plus D.C. R.I.P.

Taylor Swift Covers Billboard, Says "Goodbye" on New Album

Taylor Swift covers the latest issue of Billboard. In promotion of her new album – set to break every chart record out there on October 22 – the super, duper star talks to the magazine about a number of topics related to ” Red .” To wit: Its theme : It’s all the different ways that you have to say goodbye to someone. When you’re experiencing the ups and downs of a relationship, especially when you’re 22 years old, they all strike you different ways. Every different kind of missing someone, every kind of loss – it all sounds different to me. When you are missing someone, time seems to move slower and when I’m falling in love with someone, time seems to be moving faster. So I think, because time seems to move so slow when I’m sad, that’s why I spend so much time writing songs about it. It seems like I have more hours in the day. Its ballads : “Sad Beautiful Tragic” is really close to my heart. I remember it was after a show and I was on the bus thinking about this relationship that ended months and months before. The feeling wasn’t sadness and anger or those things anymore. It was wistful loss. And so I just got my guitar and I hit on the fact that I was thinking in terms of rhyming; I rhymed magic with tragic, changed a few things and ended it with what a sad beautiful tragic love affair. I wanted to tell the story in terms of a cloudy recollection of what went wrong. It’s kind of the murky gray, looking back on something you can’t change or get back. On being 22 years old : [It has] been my favorite year of my life. I like all the possibilities of how you’re still learning, but you know enough. You still know nothing, but you know that you know nothing. You’re old enough to start planning your life, but you’re young enough to know there are so many unanswered questions. That brings about a carefree feeling that is sort of based on indecision and fear and a the same time letting lose. Being 22 has taught me so much.

Christina Aguilera: I’m Not Lady Gaga!

Christina Aguilera isn’t just back on the music scene. The singer, whose new album drops on June 8, is back to being her sexy, provocative self. Her new music video is hot; her cover shot for GQ is naked … and the haters are coming out in full force. As she struts her seductive, eccentric stuff again, critics are comparing Christina to the artist that, in some ways, has taken over her spot in the industry: Lady Gaga. What does Aguilera think of this comparison? “I’m in it for the long haul, and a decade later in my career, I have nothing to prove,” Christina says in the latest issue of Billboard . “To anyone who wants to be negative, it’s like, ‘I’m obviously relevant enough to you for you to care and to talk and to evoke negative feelings inside of you.’ At this point in my career, I’m over any and all weird comparisons or negativity.” Also in the article, Christina says that making hit singles is not what inspires her: “There was actually a song that the label really wanted me to record, and I just said ‘no,’ because it didn’t fit on the album – it wasn’t creatively inspiring to me… when it jeopardizes my integrity too much I can’t do it.” But when it comes to taking her clothes off, Xtina can get down with that! Thank goodness.
