By Gil Kaufman Johnny Depp Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In between stints as a pirate, a scissor-handed freak and a chocolate-factory wizard, Johnny Depp has played a real-life hopped-up writer, a cross-dressing director and a notorious bank robber. Now, the star has signed on to work on a film about one of the most-beloved authors of all time: Dr. Seuss. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Depp will produce and potentially star as Seuss (born Theodor Geisel), author of children’s classics such as “Green Eggs and Ham,” “The Cat in the Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who!” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” In addition to being turned into a number of hit movies (“Grinch” and “Cat in the Hat”), Geisel’s books have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. The movie is unlikely to rely as heavily on CGI as Depp’s $1 billion-grossing foray into “Alice in Wonderland” with director Tim Burton, but it’s possible the Seuss film will include animated elements. Universal and production house Illumination Entertainment, currently joined in postproduction on an animated adaptation of Seuss’ “The Lorax,” and Infinitum Nihil also will work on the biopic. Seuss began his career in the late 1920s as a magazine illustrator, then shifted to drawing ads for companies including General Electric and NBC during the Great Depression, before shifting to political cartoons during World War II and, finally, turning his focus to children’s books in the 1950s. Among his first efforts was “Horton,” as well as 1957’s “Cat in the Hat” and “Grinch.” Geisel died of throat cancer in September 1991 at the age of 87. Bieber tour insiders, including road DJ and openers Cobra Starship, dish to MTV News about ‘absolutely ridiculous’ South America shows. MTV News got the scoop directly from some of the folks that are on the road with the Biebs, including his tour DJ and one of his tourmates. “Everything’s been cool. Everything’s been great,” DJ Tay James told MTV News. “Absolutely ridiculous. I’ve been with him since his second show and just to see him do shows with 300 people to us doing [shows with] 50,000, it’s crazy. I’m just happy to be in the position that I am. That’s like my little brother.” Cobra Starship are Bieber’s opening act on the tour, and the group’s bassist, Alex Suarez, said he was amazed by the size of the crowds, not to mention the loudness. “You know, it’s not too different than how we kind of got our start,” he said. “When we started touring, we started touring with Fall Out Boy and doing big tours. I think we’ve come to the point where Cobra, our fans have stuck with us. “It’s really amazing,” he continued. “These are the largest shows that we ever played. As soon as they open the doors, there is a constant tone of scream. It is really amazing. We watched Justin’s set — it’s the loudest thing.” There’s a lot of downtime on the road, and according to DJ Tay, when they aren’t onstage entertaining the Beliebers, he and the Biebs often discuss music. “We definitely converse on new music,” he shared. “I know [Justin’s] a big fan of Drake and Busta Rhymes. He will put me onto music and I will put him onto music; we keep each other up on it.” They also spend a lot of time playing music and posting videos online. “This whole DJing thing came out of nowhere,” the DJ said. “We started this when I first got on with him and he just wanted to play around with the turntables. He was scratching here and there, and then he was like, ‘Man, teach me a few things.’ So every time we do a video, he gets a step better. And I just wanted to show everyone he’s trying. He’s open to new things. That’s something about him that I admire.” DJ Tay also teased Bieber’s upcoming Christmas LP, Under the Mistletoe, predicting the teen star will have everyone going bananas on November 1. “You guys got to get ready for this Christmas album. While Stewart reportedly never went into detail about who she was talking about, she did note that she likes to spend time in her boyfriend’s home country. Vogue UK reported that she also discussed maintaining her public and private lives. “I’m like, ‘That’s mine,’ ” Stewart said, referring to her private life. “And I like to keep whatever is mine remaining that way. It’s a funny little game to play and it’s a slippery slope. And to make it even more special, the pair re-recorded her classic track “All I Want for Christmas” for the album. In the lead-up to the announcement of the collabo, Bieber kept his Twitter followers guessing about who the special guest for the album — which is already filled with a number of big names — might be. “Oh yeah …didn’t I promise everyone I would tell them who my last special guest is on my christmas album #UnderTheMistletoe ??? #nov1st I mean we know we got my big bro @UsherRaymondIV and @thebandperry and @BusaBusss and @BoyzIIMen on the album … but who is the last guest??” he teased his loyal followers. “Who is the living legend that I got on the album???? #UnderTheMistletoe #Nov1st.” After his followers offered their guesses, Bieber offered this hint: “I mean, the fact that I might be singing with one of the greatest voices ever, one of the greatest songs of christmas ever …… #NOV1st.” Before the big reveal, he tweeted out a link to a video message from the singer, then added, “Well like I said … #UnderTheMistletoe is not your normal christmas album. right @mariahcarey. #NOV1st.” In the video message, while being her usual over-the-top diva self, Carey said, “I’m very excited about it. ‘I don’t know who’s featured on the records,’ Tricky Stewart admits about previously announced surprise guest. And while fans are pretty psyched to hear it, they also want to know the names of every person who made the final cut on the album, Under the Mistletoe . Bieber confirmed that the Band Perry, Busta Rhymes, Boyz II Men and Usher are all contributing to the album, and teased that a huge surprise guest will also appear on the album. The rumor is that the big reveal will be Mariah Carey . Bieber’s producer Tricky Stewart said he has no idea who made the final cut. “I don’t know who’s featured on the records,” he told MTV News. “The records, as I know the records … Justin is the artist on the records. I know that he’s planning on doing things, but I have no idea what they are.” As Bieber puts the finishing touches on the album, which drops November 1, any additional production falls on Stewart’s production partner, Kuk Harrell, as Stewart moves on to other projects. “[I wouldn’t have to go back into the studio] because that’s Kuk Harrell’s neck of the woods,” Stewart said. “If something needs to be added, he’ll go in and knock it out and it’ll be fine.” Stewart noted that the album “seemed like a natural progression” for the teen star. “I think it just kind of made sense that I would be involved,” he said, having worked with Bieber throughout his professional career. “I think Justin doing a Christmas album is right on time … I feel that it’s almost necessary that he do a great Christmas album and it’s really, really good, too.” To get into the Christmas spirit months in advance of the holiday season, the team decorated their studio with all the appropriate Christmas accoutrements like Christmas trees and holiday scents. “Well, it’s different in the sense that we’ve been having Christmas and it’s not Christmas,” he said. “It looks and feels like Christmas except when we come out there’s no Christmas.
