Sir John Tavener, one of the leading British composers of the past 50 years and a man whose music drew deeply on spirituality, has died at the age of 69. He died at his home in Child Okeford, Dorset, UK today, having been in poor health for much of his life, including a major heart attack in 2007. Fellow composer John Rutter told BBC Radio 3 that his colleague was one of a kind. Sir John “was absolutely touched by genius at every point.” “He could bring an audience to a deep silence which is a very rare gift,” Rutter said. “He believed that music was for everybody and was a prayer.” In 1992, The Protecting Veil topped the classical charts for several months and in 1997 his Song For Athene was played at the funeral of Princess Diana. His setting of William Blake’s The Lamb and A New Beginning was chosen to see in a new century at the end of 1999 in the Millennium Dome in London. Sir John Tavener first made his name with the avant-garde oratorio The Whale, which was released by The Beatles on their Apple label in 1968. He went on to become one of the few contemporary composers to find wide acclaim beyond the classical world, a feat becoming ever more rare. For his contributions to the genre, he was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize twice – in 1992 and 1997 – and was formally knighted in 2000.

Life Expectancy Of “Least Educated Whites” Drops Significantly While life expectancy for black people are on the rise, the opposite is now the reality for “least educated whites”… Via NYTimes: For generations of Americans, it was a given that children would live longer than their parents. But there is now mounting evidence that this enduring trend has reversed itself for the country’s least-educated whites, an increasingly troubled group whose life expectancy has fallen by four years since 1990. Researchers have long documented that the most educated Americans were making the biggest gains in life expectancy, but now they say mortality data show that life spans for some of the least educated Americans are actually contracting. Four studies in recent years identified modest declines, but a new one that looks separately at Americans lacking a high school diploma found disturbingly sharp drops in life expectancy for whites in this group. Experts not involved in the new research said its findings were persuasive. The reasons for the decline remain unclear, but researchers offered possible explanations, including a spike in prescription drug overdoses among young whites, higher rates of smoking among less educated white women, rising obesity, and a steady increase in the number of the least educated Americans who lack health insurance. The steepest declines were for white women without a high school diploma, who lost five years of life between 1990 and 2008, said S. Jay Olshansky, a public health professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the lead investigator on the study, published last month in Health Affairs. By 2008, life expectancy for black women without a high school diploma had surpassed that of white women of the same education level, the study found. But blacks over all do not live as long as whites, while Hispanics live longer than both whites and blacks. Discuss…

Roscoe still actin’ like a lil’ hoe Roscoe Dash Continues Twitter Rant Over Uncredited Writing As we reported yesterday , Roscoe Dash took to Twitter to air out Kanye West, Wale, Miguel, Meek Mill and other artists who failed to credit the mohawk-rockin’ ATLien for his contributions to their songs. While a majority of the “tweef” took place during the evening, Mr. Dash returned to Twitter shortly before midnight with “photographic evidence” that he is a brilliant genius songwriter that has been taken advantage of by his peers. What he should have tweeted pictures of is contracts and signed agreements that he was to be paid and credited for his “work”. Get ya business in order dumba$$!!! The worst part of this whole spectacle that Roscoe is putting on is that even if what he says is 100% true, these pictures and twitter shenanigans make him look stupider than a ninja with a mohaw-…oh yeah SMMFH. Hit the flipper to peep what Roscoe was “All The Way Turnt Up” about…

Former Fugees singer could face up to three years in prison if found guilty for failing to file income-tax returns. By Rob Markman Lauryn Hill Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/ Redferns/ Getty Images Fourteen years after she released her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the IRS is teaching the former Fugees singer a lesson on the importance of filing her taxes. Lauryn Hill was charged Thursday (June 7) with failing to file three years of income-tax returns, and now the government is looking to settle the score. A press release issued to MTV News states that Hill, who owns four different corporations, makes most of her money from music and film royalties. In the three years in which Hill failed to file, the IRS estimates that she’s earned more than $1.6 million in income. If found guilty, she could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine. The news comes just days after Hill performed in her native New Jersey at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert, surprising concertgoers with a short but impactful performance. She was a special guest during Nas’ set and performed the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” her own “Lost Ones” and “If I Ruled the World” with the Queensbridge rap legend. Hill was originally scheduled to come out as a guest during Nicki MInaj’s set, but after a Hot 97 DJ insulted the Young Money queen, Lil Wayne insisted that none of his artists perform at the concert. While Hill admitted that she was unaware of the specifics, she issued a statement in support of Minaj . “I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs and walking with integrity,” she wrote. “We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics.” Hill is scheduled to appear in court on June 29. We’ll always love ya Big… The Notorious B.I.G. 40th Birthday Is Today May 21, 2012 marks the day that the Notorious B.I.G. would have turned 40, if not for the tragic murder he fell victim to back in 1997. The Source recognizes the contributions that B.I.G. made to Hip-Hop, in life and in death. In an exclusive interview with The Source recently, Ms. Wallace talked about her son’s music and the impact it has had on the Hip-Hop community. “When he passed away, I never knew he was so famous. I never knew he was so well liked, maybe because I never listened to the music. But I guess over the years, I love it more and appreciate the art more,” she said. Biggie burst onto the rap scene back in 1994, when he dropped his debut album Ready To Die on Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment. The critically-acclaimed album easily put Big on the top of the list of MCs, as it displayed a lyrical talent by the oversized rapper that was hard to come by. With the success of his debut, Biggie blew up and was highly respected. In or around 1996, he formed his own Undeas rap label, whose first release was Junior M.A.F.I.A., a collective of Brooklyn-based rappers which included Lil’ Kim. By 1997, Biggie was considered the East Coast king, but unfortunately, was at the center of an East Coast/West Coast beef with former friend 2Pac. Their feud and the subsequent highly-publicized coastal war is arguably what led to their murders, as both became victims. After his death, Biggie’s second album (a double album that received 5 Mics in The Source) Life After Death, was released to rave reviews. Says Big’s mother, Voletta Wallace, about her son’s life and his impact on the world: “For someone to think of my son, his music, his legacy, and can smile about it, I’m happy for them. If it makes you happy, then I’m happy.” It’s a cotdamn shame that we have to say “Happy Birthday” AND “R.I.P.” in the same breath today. Prayers continue to go out to Ms. Wallace, his daughter T’yanna and son Christopher Wallace Jr. “C.J.”, his ex-wife Faith, and his many close friends and relatives that were affected by his loss. “ Biggie Smalls is the illest, ya style is played out like Arnold and that ‘What you talkin’ bout Willis’ “ Source Hit the next page to peep some of Biggie’s most iconic photos from magazines.
